Garbage Man of the Year

  • A couple of months ago, I was sitting at my kitchen table watching the news and I saw that the news had done a segment on the City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department. This time it wasn't about broken carts, or complaints about the trucks being "too" violent, but it was actually about recognizing a very hard working employee of the Environmental Services Agency of San Diego.
A couple of seconds into the segment, I then realized that it was Rodger, a driver I had filmed well over 4 years ago and has made appearances on other users channels.

The news segment was recognizing Rodger for his achievement in receiving an award for his years of safety, hard work and dedication to the refuse job and industry. The award from what I remember from the segment said was "The Garbage Man of the Year" award (or something along those lines of that, don't quote me on that). Anywho, the department was, and is, very proud of Rodger and his achievements.
After seeing the segment I wanted to visit Rodger again. To my surprise, he actually remembered me. Although he didn't at first with my shades, haircut, facial hair and how I was no longer young small and thin, lol. I did however congratulate him on his achievement and also thanked him for all the behind the scenes stuff that he does on a day to day basis.
Rodger has been working for the city for 30 years. He started back in the late 80s, back when everything was manual; trash, greens and recycling. Now he drives one of the newest trucks on the lot and he says he loves his new truck and not to mention his job very much. You see that just when you're having a simple conversation with him. Very happy, humble, upbringing and friendly. Honestly one of the nicest drivers I have ever met.
I wanted to make this video out of appreciation and showcase a solo film of the Garbage Man of the Year himself at work. I honestly think it turned out great.
I had fun following him around once again in this neighborhood. (Although it was over 90 degrees with humidity and Paradise Hills is all hills, it was definitely a cardio day for me).
Once again, thank you and congratulations Rodger, hope you enjoy the video.
