This was a phenomenal interview- one of the best on your site. Long before Top Gun and Iron Eagle, The Final Countdown showed off naval aviation and carrier ops in all their glory, and was a boon to military aviation recruiting in the 1980s. A whole generation of naval aviators, and even Marine aviators and Air Force pilots were inspired by this film. Those guys were the flight leads in Desert Storm, the squadron COs over Bosnia and Kosovo, and the Air Wing CAGs, Carrier XOs/COs, and admirals commanding Carrier Battle Groups in the Global War on Terrorism. Many thanks to Shoes and the others for blazing a trail in the sky.
VF-84 is my favorite Tomcat squadron, largely due in part to this movie. I even have a scale model of an F-14A in the same paint scheme as the movie. I'm really glad that VF-84's successor, VFA-103, has carried on the Jolly Rogers' legacy and even to this day still has the iconic skull and crossbones on their F/A-18F Super Hornets.

Great interview. There was an anniversary edition of the Final Countdown on DVD that included some good stories from behind the scenes as well. One thing Shoes alluded to that was story on 60 Minutes had to do with some hi tech video gear given to one of the squadrons. If I'm not mistaken the CO of VF-84 at that time did some of the early flying in the F-14 before it was a Fleet aircraft. Basically wrote the book on how to fly the -14 onto the boat.

I loved the final countdown especially the Tomcat v Zero scenes. Ok it wasn’t as good as top gun but definitely a close second in my book. Well worth a watch if you get the chance.
'The Final Countdown' was pure awesomeness. "What if?" scenarios are fun discussions, and the subject of many a build for scale modelers. It would seem that he gaming industry has taken to it as well.
Having loved the Tomcat as long as I can remember (in no small part due to "The Final Countdown" which I might've actually seen before "Top Gun") I cannot even begin to imagine how they had to be beloved by men and women who actually flew them.

They could of gone well deeper in the story line of this movie, and got Japanese well before they hit pearl harbour, also made a mini series, going deeper in the story line ,excellent movie, 👌👍
If they had stopped the Japanese before Pearl Harbour and then disappeared then America wouldn't have joined in WW2, the cold war wouldn't have happened and therefore the Tomcat probably wouldn't have been built!
Mind boggling, good film tho,
Its fascinating to think about what might have happened.
TomCats!!!
That’s bad ass
