  • In this video I'm in Fara San Martino, an Italian town in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo known for the production of the local Pasta De Cecco since 1886. The video focuses on the parish mother church of San Remigio Bishop which was built in the thirteenth century outside the walls of the Terravecchia village. It became a parish in 1592 to replace the small Annunziata church in the medieval village. In 1706 it was damaged by the Majella earthquake and was largely rebuilt, becoming a receptive church in 1719 with the presence of the archpriest and eight canons. In 1933 a new earthquake in the Majella involved the demolition of the upper part of the facade and the lowering of the dome with the elimination of the lantern. Until the 2nd World War, the facade was in plain stone with a late Romanesque 16th century portal. Later it was rebuilt in Baroque style, with the addition of two side entrances besides the one in the monumental center. The baroque façade is divided by a string course cornice, and in the second sector it flows from the lateral forms ending with a classic triangular tympanum. In the center there is a large window and the vertical subdivision is marked by white pilasters. The interior has a baroque style, with three naves and altars in the side chapels. On the left side there is the large chapel of Sant' Antonio di Padova, patron of the town. During the restoration works the church was adorned with early Christian mosaics at the three semicircular apses, as well as a stucco decoration in the area. The most interesting mosaic is that of the central apse with a golden background and divided into two horizontal bands. In the upper band in the center is Christ in Majesty in the act of blessing, while with the other hand he has a gospel. At its sides are San Pietro, San Paolo, San Giovanni Evangelista and San Luca. In the lower band in smaller dimensions there is another group of saints.
The ancient tabernacle in the Antonian chapel looks like a pagan temple, with elegant columns and fine marble inlays. Under the Sacramento altar there is a marble slab by the sculptor P. Di Renzo (1950).
The church houses a seventeenth-century painting by Tanzio da Varallo depicting the Circumcision with Saints Carlo Borromeo and Francesco D'Assisi.
At 0:19 seconds we see the Church of the Madonna del Suffragio, annexed to the church of San Remigio. Originally independent, merged with the parish after the 1706 earthquake. The eighteenth-century bell tower follows the medieval style with its rusticated stones. The simple gray Neapolitan facade is adorned with a central window and a 16th century stone portal bearing the inscription "PIA MATER SUFFRAGII". In 2018 the church was restored, after decades of closure. At 0:45 seconds we see the Church of the Santissima Annunziata which was built in the thirteenth century and was the church of the Terravecchia, or Rocca Sancti Martini, until the seventeenth century. It was damaged by the 1706 earthquake and incorporated the gate of the sun. The facade is made up of a stone building with a monument to the unification of Italy and an adjoining bell tower. The lunette of the portal represents the Virgin with Saint Anthony. The real entrance is beyond the door. The chapel interior is baroque.
Information on the bell tower and bells of the parish church of San Remigio Bishop.
The bell tower is a sail, in original stone, on the north side, overlooking the ancient sixteenth-century door that leads to the village of Terravecchia and has a concert of 4 electrified bells. The main bell is in the arch of the first order. Above the second string course frame there are two other arches in which the second bell (right) and the fourth bell (left) are located.
The third bell is found alone in an iron structure to the left of the bell tower. In the video we see the festive sound with the ascending expanse of the 3 minor bells (minute 3:08) and the descending plenum performed manually by the parish priest at my request (minute 6:58). Thanks to the parish priest for the kindness and helpfulness shown.
    IV - SOLb4 slightly waning
    III - MI4 growing
II - MI4 waning - cast by the Mari di Lanciano Foundry
I - MI3 slightly waning - certainly melted by the Mari Foundry since the shape and decorations with angels are identical to those of the main bell of San Cristinziano Martire in San Martino sulla Marrucina (CH).
    Good vision!
We recommend using headphones for more accurate listening.
