What cuts me deep is Wolfwood realizing a simple life with his friends was enough. It was all he ever needed and wanted. When that concept set in on me it made me cry. I related to him deeply in these moments.
Bruh why is Trigun SO UNDERRATED. This might be the most underrated ever. I never hear people say anything about trigun on any social media. I feel like whoever picks the show up stops watching it early cuz they don’t know that the second half of the show is so powerful like this. It never gets the credit it deserves. The whole show is depressing but beautiful. This scene sums it up, the music, the imagery, what he’s saying. Shits powerful man. Rip wolfwood, a fucking legend.
Dude I just got done watching it with my brother. Love this anime!!! Also yeah I cried non stop when my Wolfie died. But yeah, that ending left me questioning!!!
There many good animes that have over 200 episodes. Great animes are only 26 episodes. The latter won. Social media only recognize the current trends because this animes are from a different era with a different message.
Eh? Both Trigun and Trigun Maximum were some of the most popular Animes/Mangas at the time, particularly around the 2000s. Popularity ebbs and fades, but Trigun will always be one of the greatest. It’s inspired many other works too. Just because something isn’t as talked about anymore doesn’t mean it’s underrated imo.
@@visibleconfusion782 Yes, but back then anime as a medium wasn't nearly as mainstream as it is becoming now. To miss out on modern popularity and attention is to fail at bringing widespread attention to such a work of art. I guarantee if this anime was given the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood treatment it would be talked about by all fans. Shonen meatheads or Seinen elitists alike. I often cringe at some of my old RUclips comments but I was speaking straight truths with this one.
A man at the end of his life, standing before God, pleading for mercy, forgiveness and for peace for his soul. He’s not ready to die because he finally found something worth living for.
as far as anime deaths go this is one of the saddest, if not the saddest one. also just fantastic dub work. really the whole team. nothing sounds corny or out of place. its perfect.
The only scene I know that was more heart rending was in Clannad Afterstory. But it cheated, sort of. Wolfwood's death was grief inducing with no cheap tricks - just a man, collapsing under the weight of his own cross, dying right after he had found a way to do things better and regretting that he didnt have time to make a difference.
My brother showed me this anime and ever since that I've seen so many amazing shows. When he died I came back to this and the days I miss him I watch this like we used to. Rip Martin and wolf his favorite character
Trigun started off happy with lots of comedy; then started to become serious with lots of tragedy. I do like Trigun a lot, but it did become very depressing. This scene is the climax of that saddness.
Tom Jupiter No, I have been watching it for well over a decade. If you watch this anime you will notice that it goes from being an action comedy to just being action. Virtually all of the comedic aspects as gone with the introduction of the Gung-Ho-Guns. The entire tone changed completely.
"I did not want to die this way!" Ah preacher man, none of us can choose our deaths. You had the grace and the strength to at least understand that your time had finally come. Although you may have left us, your life will always be remembered as one of hope. Nicholas D. Wolfwood, we will love you until the end of time.
The point of his expression, was because he didn't feel he had redeemed himself yet. He hadn't seen himself worthy of truly appreciating life, especially in the eyes of the lord being such a religious man. To me, this scene represents everything about man. Finding a purpose in life, struggling against the tide, then when you finally realize everything in life was bullshit besides what REALLY matters - it's too late. This isn't about choosing when to die, but choosing how to live.
The manga is also really sad... Wolfwood gets to spend his final moments with Vash, and Vash's reaction and him trying to force himself to "move on"... I get a lump in my throat. That and the paper rain. Right in the feels.
The best anime are the ones that don't TRY to be anime. Many years later still a powerful scene. Bitter sweet because he had to leave his dear friends, regretted his past acts but made peace with God.
+Jose Gonzalez - I've read it i think it's a shame because this really deserved more. - At least they could have had made an OVA of the series. And it didn't even get that.
I agree with this 100 percent. To be anime these days the show has to undergo a specific formula and style. Being anime today is such a predictable, shallow thing now. In my opinion anime has become more and more conformed to one line of passage. They stick to a very short reach of depth. Which is why I love older anime. It had its old tropes like any, but I feel their was more variety and down to earth themes that made shows like this, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Cowboy Bebop beloved even now. They hold more water than any typical high school Adventure story can dish out.
One of the most tragic and heart-rending death scenes in all of anime... Wolfwood's soliloquy was simply beautiful. In his dream of paradise all he saw were the children and Milly, as well as Vash and Meryl. The sadness comes with the fact that he was a realist that knew killing and violence was unfortunately necessary but dreamed of a world in which there would be no more killing and violence. In less than 5 minutes, Wolfwood justifies his actions, nearly begs for a second chance in life, questions his life's decisions, and begs God for forgiveness. It's nothing short of beautiful. His death does not go in vain as Wolfwood's death would go on to impact Vash by the end of the series.
Damn, he actually confessed to his narrow way of thinking and how he should've listened to Vash, admitting that your way of doing things was wrong is never an easy thing to do but I guess that facing your own mortality is the one time when you're truly honest with yourself. Truly the most human character I've ever seen in any media.
It's even more tragic because Wolfwood actually might have been able to walk away from Chapel alive and well. It's implied that Chapel didn't shoot Wolfwood of his own volition, but Legato took control and made him.
"The only solution for bad and violent people, are good people that are more skilled in violence." And that ladies and gentlemen is Wolfwood. He has lived life in its purest form, walking in its mirror, peace and chaos, total balance. To carry the cross and still hold on to it in his last moments, symbolizes the fact that he is mortal, he is human, that he knows he had done violence but still believes in good, in humanity. To not be afraid of death but still deny it when it comes because life is still beautiful, life is still worth living, despite the chaos and gunsmoke. To kiss cigarette smoke in the face of death, while carrying mercy shining upon him, to taste the beauty of life and mortality. Ahh one of the greatest and saddest moments in anime, makes you realise how fragile life really is, and that its still beautiful.
v.i.g gamer you sound crazy he's dead these are his last words. His last action was reminding vash where he buried the cross so he could use it against knives.
trigun still gives me chills to this day. it's unfortunate that it is slowly being lost to time and younger people may night come to appreciate it as much with all these newer, flashier animes coming out.
these newer flashier animes coming out got nothing on animes from this era. I think that the lack of tech used in today's animations forced the creators to put more heart and soul into the show.
These ones aren’t being lost. I only finished cowboy bebop last month and saw Wolfwoods death last night and couldn’t stop thinking about it which brought me here. Good things stand on their own and will be remembered and rediscovered, if only by a few.
What an amazing and impactful scene. There’s no going out in a blaze of glory. No badass quips or one liners. What we have is a man facing mortality like most of us would: scared, confused, full of regret and an unwillingness to let go. It’s haunting because it feels so genuine…
This scene shows just how powerful the writing of Trigun was. You see Wolfwood finally at peace with himself, finally accepting Vash's way of thinking, reflecting back on his whole life, wanting nothing more than peace and to correct any mistakes he made in the past. It strikes a cord in our hearts because each of us can relate to him in this moment. We all have regrets, we all hurt somebody in the past, with intention or not, we all look for our personal Eden where we can live in peace with the people we love. Wolfwood had finally found the path he always looked for in his life, found people he loved and now his life was over. He didn't want to die because he finally found a reason to be alive.
Seeing Wolfwood's death late at night on Adult Swim as a kid, was easily the first anime/TV show scene that felt so intense with the loss of a character. Such a heavy feeling and truly made Trigun all that much more memorable and impactful. RIP NDW 🚬
Sometime death is unavoidable and no matter how hard we try or how many deals we make, the only thing holding us back is our own sins and deeds. Rather or not you done bad thing that you can never take back or good things that make everyone you care about look up to you, you lived your life the way you wanted to live it. Don't look away, remember what life means to you... R.I.P Nicholas D. Wolfwood, may you live a happier life forever in Eden
Out of all the death scenes I've seen in anime this one actually made me cry. It's so down to earth and so gratifying to see, so full of the emotions we all feel as people.
my grandpa was a great man. he had his issues but overall he was a kind soul. i saw him cry and be scared at the prospect of leaving this life. it was so sad how real it was... i saw this years before he left my life and it reminds me how fragile we are. RIP
And THIS is why Trigun is possibly the best anime of all time. The true connection you feel for the character is amazing, and the fact that you actually feel deeply saddened by the death of a character.
*having a cool chat with your homie, relive an entire life flashbacks with minutes of monologue instead of tending to the wound* him : "I don't wanna die!"
Wolfwood why do you have to be so relatable in your questioning of life. Just watched trigun for the first time. Amazing, and this is one of the saddest deaths I’ve seen yet. From when he says “im a man” onward, it’s hard for me to keep it together
I'm 32 years old. I remember watching this show with my little brother on toonami during the summer. I want to say it aired at 2:30 am? This show is such a huge part of my happy childhood memories. I cried like a baby when he died.
His english Voice over is top, so much trumps any other voice over. That is legit his voice. I still cry about about and the way he went out leaned over on his cross in this sitting position was so badass for some reason and the struggle "I did not want to do die this way!" dude was struggling to stay alive to the end, that's the saddest part., that's what kils me . He didn't want to die/was not ready. You never saw that back then. Him and spike from cowboy bebop are my favorite characters of all time.
Reminds me a lot of the "I don't want to go" scene in Doctor Who when David Tennant regenerates. (and yes I know trigun came first). So sad T_T I have to give them major props for actually keeping him dead and not bringing him back through some stupid loophole, made me respect the show and this character a lot more.
Watching this in 2019 and I still howl every time... One of the best characters, and one of the most (if not the most) powerful and sad anime death scenes ever... So beautifully done
this scene destroyed me, I cried and cried for days, I didn't want to continue watching afterwards, but I wanted to make sure his sacrifice wasn't in vain... still hurts to this day I'm tearing up as I write this, such a wonderful experience watching this
I agree most anime that incorporate Christianity fail to get across the core teachings; such as forgiveness and compassion. They mostly just have the Christian aesthetics and the corresponding demonology making the christian characters out to be zealots or busty sex crazed nuns and hardly ever go into the aspect of overcoming your demons and learning to forgive others and yourself.
Only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Saint Tail. She’s sent on missions by her best friend who’s a novice. She’s a magical Robin Hood - her dad’s a magician while her mom’s an ex-petty thief. Combine that with redemption arcs and it’s a great story.
38 years old...i can remember buying another disc of this series every pay day on the way to my courses almost 20 years ago...scene still fucking gets me in the feels.
It gets worse as you age to. Because you really start to feel what Wolfwood felt. As a kid or young adult, yes, sad and a downer. As an older adult it really hits home. That you don't have to find perfection....you just find ok. and that's ok. and it's ok to be ok with that.
This scene is so heartbreaking to watch. Trigun could give off such a sad tone, and they did it well. Wolfwood I think is the best character in the show. He had such a powerful story, and a powerful demise, too. Kudos to the writers and voice actors, because this show hits hard.
Amazing how well a famous quote from MASH fits Wolfwood's death: Soldier dying of shrapnel: "Tell me Chaplain, does God answer all prayers?" Chaplain: "Yes. And sometimes the answer is no."
Am I the only one who thinks that this was the most tragic scene in the entire series? Like when wolfwood spent his final moments in the church and the women started crying..... That till date gives me goosebumps
Trying not to cry at work while watching this. One of my favorite scenes in all of anime. I've seen the show only twice through. I've watched this scene at least 20 times.
I remember watching show as a little kid, when this scene first came out I couldn't stop crying. I think it really hit me because it was the first time I saw such an emotional scene where the person begs not to die, you really felt how much he wishes he could just be healed up and back with his friends, continuing their journey as though everything was like any other day, but nope, that's not how life always works. When it's your time, it's your time. Rather than just the peaceful closing of the eyes, where they look satisfied with their life (like I was used to), it shows him painfully begging to live and stay with his friends. That was a lot to realize and process as a kid lol.
This is such an important scene. It is just a great work of art and love. It simply shows how much all of us will eventually experience this. And how some of us are unfortunately taken to whatever awaits after death when we’re not ready. But this man, this human being, was lost and and simply did what we all do; love the life we want to, no matter how painful or sad it can and will be. There is peace after death. Once we cross that bridge, we will know. Or not. But just make sure that you loved the way you wanted to. And never focus up on yourself or the ones you love.
One interpretation I love is the fact that both vash and wolf wood know hes going to die and that wolfwood is trying to comfort him with the "its part of the game be more careful next time" makes it that much sadder
Honestly, Nocholas' final 2 sentences hit me the hardest. I love his character and the way he goes out. I dont know if I find more in it because I am a christian, but it's just beautiful and tragic. Masterpiece is the only way to put it
I believe in the manga, Millie reveals at the end that she was pregnant with wolfwood's child after their night together. So even though she lost him, she was happy enough to know that his memory would sorta live on through their child.
Wolfwood is my favorite character in fiction, to honor him and his creator, I intend to name my first son Nicholas with the middle name of Wolfwood. People in my life tell me thats a terrible idea, but in the end im giving my son a perfectly normal name and a slightly odd middle name he could use as a nickname if he chose, whether people notice its a tribute or not is on them to realize
Wolfwood is the most human character ever. He’s the culmination of its Sarah’s is as ever were to become a cartoon character. He was powerful, lived a convoluted life, embraced the dark to feel important and then gave it an up to do what’s right. HeHe died a humble hero, he lived the way he wants Ava’s that redeemed his soul. Rest in peace!
No matter how much older I get Every single time I watch Nicolas die. From the first time I watched trigun 14 tell now 33. I can't help but she'd a tear. Cause it's always unexpected seeing it over and over for years. I always never expect him to die .
I think the reason this scene is so powerful is because this is what people fear the most just before they die: The fear and doubt that they did not do enough for others and have wasted their life.

@@outlaw451 Its masterful and you are right on the money.

It took us nine episodes to meet him, but only one episode to love him.
R.I.P Wolfwood.
This scene and legatos "victory" over Vash are by far some of the most impactful anime moments ever.
Lets not forget Legato!
Mike Pettine Android 16's death is also sad
The only scene I know that was more heart rending was in Clannad Afterstory. But it cheated, sort of. Wolfwood's death was grief inducing with no cheap tricks - just a man, collapsing under the weight of his own cross, dying right after he had found a way to do things better and regretting that he didnt have time to make a difference.
@Silvah500 10 years later mate ! Legato scene was my fave
"Just be more careful next time." ;_;
My brother showed me this anime and ever since that I've seen so many amazing shows. When he died I came back to this and the days I miss him I watch this like we used to. Rip Martin and wolf his favorite character

He died smiling because the cross was holding him up. He was forgiven.

Almost 20 years and I never saw that. Makes he think about him also being a a humble kneeling position not unlike a prayer position.
Thanks for that 3 years later on this comment but really thanks I never noticed that before.
I'M CRYING
Trigun started off happy with lots of comedy; then started to become serious with lots of tragedy.
I do like Trigun a lot, but it did become very depressing. This scene is the climax of that saddness.
Did you just discover anime? It's always like that. It combines humor and drama.
Tom Jupiter No, I have been watching it for well over a decade. If you watch this anime you will notice that it goes from being an action comedy to just being action. Virtually all of the comedic aspects as gone with the introduction of the Gung-Ho-Guns. The entire tone changed completely.
Matthew Cioffi That's good writing ;D
Darth Wishh Thank you. I do put effort towards making a point so that everyone understands it.
+Matthew Cioffi That's how life becomes honestly. Sure it's not all cases true but this scene isn't wrong
He hadn't seen
himself worthy of truly appreciating life, especially in the eyes of the lord being such a religious man.
To me, this scene represents everything about man. Finding a purpose in life, struggling against the tide, then when you finally realize everything in life was bullshit besides what REALLY matters - it's too late.
This isn't about choosing when to die, but choosing how to live.
As a proud and faithful catholic with an open mind and heart.
I say a quote from all faithful
"Amen"

Definitely heart breaking.... That's for sure.

The manga is also really sad... Wolfwood gets to spend his final moments with Vash, and Vash's reaction and him trying to force himself to "move on"... I get a lump in my throat. That and the paper rain.
Right in the feels.
+Heruru Meruru Ayyyy, it's you!
In the end, he carried his cross. I feel like that was the message they gave with the final scene.
"You gonna carry that weight"?
everyone has there cross to bear
It was also the irony of the fact that he used it to kill, and it was the only thing that kept him propped up after his own death.
Am I the only one who thinks that Spike Spiegel and Nicholas Wolfwood would be a truly awesome team?
i would say hell yeah lolz
Both of their deaths made me cry too! lolz
Trent Reed why was I just thinking this right before a scrolled down one comment to this comment
Rly do miss those type of characters in anime.
They dress up pretty similarly
The best anime are the ones that don't TRY to be anime. Many years later still a powerful scene. Bitter sweet because he had to leave his dear friends, regretted his past acts but made peace with God.
T-Zay your comments a bit confusing
this series wasn't as liked in japan but in the US it was a success
+Jose Gonzalez - I've read it i think it's a shame because this really deserved more.
- At least they could have had made an OVA of the series. And it didn't even get that.
he definietely didnt make peace with god, though
I agree with this 100 percent. To be anime these days the show has to undergo a specific formula and style. Being anime today is such a predictable, shallow thing now. In my opinion anime has become more and more conformed to one line of passage. They stick to a very short reach of depth. Which is why I love older anime. It had its old tropes like any, but I feel their was more variety and down to earth themes that made shows like this, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Cowboy Bebop beloved even now. They hold more water than any typical high school Adventure story can dish out.
"I'm sorry Honey..."
Everytime I've considered suicide
I go back to this, and find comfort in it.
I hope you're better now
Same
God can do anything man seek him
He died last month
Weak ass dramatic fool lmao!
It's even more tragic because Wolfwood actually might have been able to walk away from Chapel alive and well. It's implied that Chapel didn't shoot Wolfwood of his own volition, but Legato took control and made him.
That's 100% true because Wolfwood said himself that Vash's way worked- Chapel wasn't going to continue fighting.
"Was everything i did a mistake" . One question everyone has asked themselves in a certain point of their life
"The only solution for bad and violent people, are good people that are more skilled in violence." And that ladies and gentlemen is Wolfwood.
Ahh one of the greatest and saddest moments in anime, makes you realise how fragile life really is, and that its still beautiful.
character development~~~
Nikkolo Makaveli he didnt even die 😂😂😂
Nikkolo Makaveli epic ending.
v.i.g gamer you sound crazy he's dead these are his last words. His last action was reminding vash where he buried the cross so he could use it against knives.
he died, the movie took place before the introduction of the Gung-Ho-Guns

I really liked all the voice actors in this show, but Jeff Nimoy killed it as Wolfwood.
It's a shame he's not used in Dubs as much these days.
Even 13 years people are still commenting on how sad this scene is.
Live long in our hearts Wolfwood
Millie's scream when they find his body was so bone chilling...😭
trigun still gives me chills to this day. it's unfortunate that it is slowly being lost to time and younger people may night come to appreciate it as much with all these newer, flashier animes coming out.
these newer flashier animes coming out got nothing on animes from this era.
It’s haunting because it feels so genuine…
still one of the best anime I've ever seen
This is just the saddest thing I've ever seen. Favorite character, and he died :( but he died in such a beautiful way. R.I.P. man
Indeed :/
RIP NDW 🚬
I love the cry of " I don't want to die!" Most deaths don't seem to touch into the unfulfilled desires of someone who dies, and it's beautiful.
I had a friend call me crying when we were kids over this episode. He was upset that wolfwood died
What a pxssy lol
I cried watching this with my boyfriend...Wolfwood didn't deserve this...he and Milly deserved to be happy together
when I first saw this I literally said to my TV "Wolfwood you better get the fuck up right now"
Out of all the death scenes I've seen in anime this one actually made me cry. It's so down to earth and so gratifying to see, so full of the emotions we all feel as people.
One of the most poetic moments in anime history. Well done, Trigun, well done.
my grandpa was a great man. he had his issues but overall he was a kind soul. i saw him cry and be scared at the prospect of leaving this life. it was so sad how real it was... i saw this years before he left my life and it reminds me how fragile we are. RIP
And THIS is why Trigun is possibly the best anime of all time. The true connection you feel for the character is amazing, and the fact that you actually feel deeply saddened by the death of a character.
I know this whole scene by heart, and always will.
milly and Meryl cried a lot well mostly milly
Well Milly and Wolfwood had more of a romantic/love relationship towards each other, and she loved him, and he did too, tho it was sublime.
The music gets me every time
Yup.... That's also what makes it works

Wolfwood why do you have to be so relatable in your questioning of life. Just watched trigun for the first time. Amazing, and this is one of the saddest deaths I’ve seen yet. From when he says “im a man” onward, it’s hard for me to keep it together
The fact that his idea of paradise was to live with his friends and the girl he loved is so moving.
I'm 32 years old. I remember watching this show with my little brother on toonami during the summer. I want to say it aired at 2:30 am? This show is such a huge part of my happy childhood memories. I cried like a baby when he died.
he died carrying "his own cross". Because all these times, he's carried a heavy cross his entire life
So sad... Rest in Peace Nicholas D Wolfwood
So sad T_T
I have to give them major props for actually keeping him dead and not bringing him back through some stupid loophole, made me respect the show and this character a lot more.
Oh didn't expect see your comment of this scene
Legit one of the most sad moments I’ve ever seen. Not sappy or over emotional but unfortunate given Wolfwoods growth.
Watching this in 2019 and I still howl every time... One of the best characters, and one of the most (if not the most) powerful and sad anime death scenes ever... So beautifully done
My favorite quote from the death: "I DID NOT WANT TO DIE THIS WAY!" or when he talked about how he wanted to live.
this scene destroyed me, I cried and cried for days, I didn't want to continue watching afterwards, but I wanted to make sure his sacrifice wasn't in vain... still hurts to this day I'm tearing up as I write this, such a wonderful experience watching this
I think it is sad to hear your favorite character at the brink of his life say he doesn’t want to die

This anime was perfection, a true masterpiece.
its such a rare treat to have a good anime with Christian themes made by a believer in Christ. anyone know any others?
Chrono Crusade?

@@justincombs7433Shit, you aint lyin, watched it again the other day, brain immediately started to empathisze an betray me.
This scene is so heartbreaking to watch. Trigun could give off such a sad tone, and they did it well. Wolfwood I think is the best character in the show. He had such a powerful story, and a powerful demise, too. Kudos to the writers and voice actors, because this show hits hard.
This gets me every time tears roll when he says with his dying breath I didn't want to die this way!!! :(
I prefer Wolfwood here than in the manga
Amazing how well a famous quote from MASH fits Wolfwood's death:
Soldier dying of shrapnel: "Tell me Chaplain, does God answer all prayers?"
Chaplain: "Yes.
"I did not want to die this way" is one of the saddest lines in televised history.
One of the first anime’s that I ACTUALLY watched from beginning to end that hit me in the feels with scenes like this.
20 years later and It still feels like it did the first time I watched the show leading up to this..I have to rewatch the whole series now
This is such an important scene.
"Was everything I did in my life a mistake?" That part gets to me every time. Truly a powerful scene.
Wolf and Milly would've been perfect together!!! WHY?!!!
What a great closure that would be. A sort of grace granted to Wolfwood for all his past sins, and a rebirth.
I thought there was no romantic relationship between them in the manga???
Not right

One of the best death scenes of all time :D
I just keep coming back to this. I can’t think of any other character death that hit me as hard as this.
The hallelujah and the flashbacks really hits me every damn time.
The Italian monologue was even more sad but in any case, this scene alone always had me in tears in any language
No matter how much older I get
Every single time I watch Nicolas die.
This was the first anime death scene I've watched. That's why Trigun will always have a place in my heart.
Always such a sad and just a tear to your eye moment
this anime should have seen by everyone, timeless masterpiece.
