- Tony Martin talks about Black Sabbath, The Anno Domini Box Set and What Might Happen Next!
Could there be another box set including Cross Purposes Live?
Tony answers questions about the contents of Box Set, the difficulties in getting this together and how overjoyed he is to see these fantastic albums released again. We cover each album in turn, Headless Cross, TYR, Cross Purposes, Forbidden (The Remix) and the DIO interlude.
We also talk about why Eternal Idol and Cross Purposes Live were not included.

Tony Martin has to be one of the most humble people in all of Metal. There is no diva bullshit with him . He is a real guy. It's awesome to see
I am so so pleased for Tony Martin! This box set will now give this era of the band the recognition they should have had!. Tony Martin is one of the greatest vocalists and lyricists of the band ever! Thank you Phil for once again giving another wonderful interview and for giving Tony Martin the spotlight he deserves!
Thank you for watching- Phil
It’s absolutely amazing! Each album sounds stellar, and ‘Forbidden’ now sounds like a full-fledged Sabbath record!
I almost punched my damn ceiling as “Odin’s Court” transitioned into “Valhalla” on ‘Tyr’. Just unbelievable stuff!
Tony, you’re a true gentleman, and I’m happy that your era is being but into the spotlight it has always deserved!
The fact that BMG is struggling to keep up with demand is the truest example of the quality on display here.
Phil is great. He lets the musicians speak without interruption. That egomaniac Eddie Trunk could learn a thing, or two.
I agree......Some of those interviewers on other channels are full of themselves and some of them keep needlessly swearing too. Phil has a nice calm manner and lets the interviewee talk properly. Keep the show's coming Phil.
Ozzy is always so angry and petty, Dio was always so demeaning toward the other singers. Tony comes across so genuine and positive despite all the grief and the politics. I love it.
Well deserved recognition.
Dio always came across as more frustrated than anything though I guess he could have been kinder to other singers. Ozzy's behavior, especially at the time, was pathetic.
I don't think Martin is the only one frustrated with half of his career being erased, coincidentially Ozzy stirs up reunion drama again and Iommi basically brushes it off and keeps promoting the Martin era on his and the offical Sabbath channel.
Good! It’s about time he prioritizes this era.
I honestly think Ozzy only mentioned it to steal the hype away from this box set. The timing is way too perfect. He has historically ALWAYS disrespected every other era of Sabbath, just like Dio did.
It’s sad that some people feel so insecure that they would rob the fans of the chance of new releases from the vaults of this era.
Awesome interview. Tony is one of the most underrated vocalists in metal. 🎤
I ordered the LP- and CD-boxset right now because of THIS fantastic interview!! What a great and honest guy Mr. Tony Martin is!!! THANKS for this!
Thank you 🙏 enjoy 😊
As a Black Sabbath fan, I bought all the Tony Martin era albums. I always enjoyed them. Excellent singer and I would love for the two Tonys to collaborate on one more album.
Was just listening to the remixed Forbidden today!
How refreshing for a lead singer to be so humble and honest. Also a great singer and nice guy to boot.
I was guilty of turning my back on Sabbath in the nineties because of the revolving door approach to band members. I have recently been seeking out the Tony Martin albums which hasn’t been easy but worthwhile. Good interview, thanks Phil (and Tony of course)
What an interview! Thanks Phil!
Black Sabbath means different things to different fans - The Ozzy fans, the Dio fans. Bands have replaced musicians many times, but changing singers is always tricky. Having said that...and I really hope Tony Martin sees this...Tony Martin gave the kiss of life to the band in 1987. If it weren't for Tony Martin, his enthusiasm (not to mention his great talent) Sabbath would have been long defunct. The 1987-1995 era kept the creative credibility of the band intact with a string of great albums during times which weren't the kindest to bands like Sabbath. Tony Martin surely deserves so much credit in the Sabbath world and in the annals of rock music. Thanks Tony!
Totally agree and thank you for watching - Phil :)
Great to hear Tony so enthused, he deserves more plaudits for his part in Black Sabbath. The albums are worthy additions to any rockers record collection.
Hoping Tony is going to pop up at the Cozy Powell Birthday Bash this December.
Thank you for watching - Phil
He’s the only one of the three vocalists who recorded more than one Sabbath album that has never talked crap about the other eras.
Great interview, Phil. Mr. Martin seems like a really laid-back guy. I'm excited to get the box set tomorrow and re discover this era of Sabbath!
Tony Martin's solo stuff is pretty damn good as well, especially Thorns from 2022.
Totally agree 👍
♥ Always loved Forbidden (great songs transcend production) So glad to see Tony getting the recognition & musical respect he always deserved!
Tony should do a podcast where he chats & can play his tapes (similar to the Paul McCartney radio show back in the day, in which he played unheard demos from his archive)
Thank you so much, Phil! You’ve shed so much light on the wonderful personality of the man himself, Tony Martin. Brilliant conversation. ❤
Thank you 🙏
I am so happy that Tony is now getting the recognition he deserves. A fabulous vocalist and one the good guys of Rock and Metal. I love his down to earth attitude and passion for the music. I saw Tony fronting Sabbath back in '89 on the Headless Cross Tour and so pleased he's back in the forefront with the release of the Deluxe Box Sets.
I've been here for the entire recoding output of Black Sabbath. But the Tony Martin albums are the only Black Sabbath albums I ever bought in real time. From what was said in the interview I suppose I'm a bit of an outlier, but I really like what Tony M and Tony I did on those albums.
Tony really enjoyed listening to the conversation your great singer and a humble guy .I first heard you on the Eternal Idol album and then the Forcefield album "The Talisman" and the Mario Parga Song" Spirit of the Night".I will have to look for your solo album now,Thanks Phil enjoyed the interview and received the box set today.TYR was always my favorite out of the bunch, maybe because it had a viking feel to it.
Listened to Forbidden twice today. It is wild it sounds like a brand new album and I was very familiar with the original mix. Alternate takes and so much cleaner and you can really make out all instruments including Cozy and Martin and Iommi and Murray. Great interview, and glad for the Tony Martin era to finally get some more recognition!
I was fortunate enough to see Tony fronting Sabbath at Sun City in South Africa. Just loved his performance. What a great frontman.
My vinyl Headless Cross is still getting a regular spin.
Been a fan of Tony’s since first hearing most of “Eternal Idol” when Aired in early 1988 on an American radio show. Was Instantly hooked on this version of the almighty Sabbath.
Just listened to all 4 vinyl records and I’m so happy to have them all remastered and the remixed version of Forbidden is a huge improvement.
Phil thank you fantastic interview I love the Tony Martin years this man never gets the credit he deserves a fantastic vocalist and human being I received my box set yesterday of this fabulous set it is simply amazing and finally we have these great LP’s at our fingertips again keep up the great work you do Phil love this channel and I take your word on every box set you review it matters to me thanks and and you have not been wrong yet on these fantastic sets cheers -- Anthony ( queens New York City )
Great interview - I was one of the people who never gave Tony a shot back in the day but have over the years realised his greatness. Good to see more an d more people coming around. Better late than never!!
Fantastic interview! Thank you gentlemen for taking the time to share all this with us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I get my copy of the set tomorrow and im excited. Its about time 😊👍
Excellent Phil👍 Excellent Tony 👍fantastic to see & hear this one!! Cheers from Houston 🇺🇸✌️
You are such a great vocalist Tony, We love all your work... We sabbath fans love you.. congratulations on your Anno Domine resurrection of your fantastic Sabbath era.. Forbidden now sounds powerful !!! You rock
Fantastic Interview! Love Tony Martin and his work with Black Sabbath and his solo albums! an amazing and versatile vocalist! and a very cool guy as seen in this interview!
He was the best singer in Sabbath because he could do both Ozzy and Dio songs comfortably. I would have loved to hear him do some of the Gillan and Hughes albums.
would have loved to hear Tony sing No Stranger To Love and Heart Like A Wheel or Zero The Hero and The Fallen which I feel is great for his voice! Tony Martin is
absolutely brilliant and Humble! Love Him and all his work!
Thank you 🙏
Great interview, Phil! I’m excited for my CD set to arrive! Cheers 🍻
great interview, it was very interesting!
Most interesting and enjoyable chat with Tony. Loving my new box set, the sound quality is superb.
Really insightful interview. It is wonderful that this material has been repackaged. All these albums are excellent. Tony is an exceptional vocalist. Enjoying revisiting all this great material. 👍
Much respect ✊ great interview
Great interview what a great guy.
Like Tony i had to wait years to get physical copy again.
Cheers Jonathan
Excellent interview thank you gentlemen.
My set is arriving Tuesday! Possibly my most personally anticipated set ever! Also, great interview! I love getting all of this info from the man himself!
I saw black Sabbath in 1994 in with tony Martin good singer
Great interview! One of my favourite vocalists, and Cross Purposes is my favourite Sabbath album. I would love to see you do an interview with Blaze Bayley about his time with Maiden, too (which I was a huge fan of)
Thank you 🙏
Tony Martin is the best singer for me i love all of Sabbath records with him nice interview my friend take care man.
Great interview, good pace, great questions and most importantly, interviewed by a real fan. That came across in spades.
Cheers Phil
Insightful interview, seems like a top bloke.
Keep up the excellent work
Thank you 🙏
What an awesome guy Tony is !! Great interview Phil !
Thank you 🙏
Will be ordering this soon. I absolutely love the Tony Martin era and I'm glad Tony FINALLY is getting the recognition he deserves. He is such an underrated singer and seems quite down to earth. *PS: There is only one thing I have to correct and it's the pronunciation of "Domini". Since it's Latin, it is pronounced D-oh-mee-nee, not D-oh-mee, n-eye. 😀
Sorry about that! Thank you 🙏
@@NowSpinningMagazine No worries. 😎
Great interview. And what a sound guy he is.
Since there is not a lot of new music anymore redo / remix the entire sabbath catalog and other bands as well. Would love to hear it all again with better sound quality. For some reason all the remixes are amazing
Pre-ordered my copy last week.
Let’s not forget that the main reason The Eternal Idol isn’t included in this box set is simply because, at the time, it was the last BS album to come out through Warner Bros Records, well on this side of the ocean, that is. This box set offers the albums that came out after, on IRS Records.
And it came out as a deluxe two disc set a decade ago. It’s readily available.
When these albums came out they didn't ship records anymore...I still have the cassettes.
Not correct, they all came out on vinyl. Check discogs.
The Boxset went on No. 9 in Germany!
I never minded Forbidden. but the remix is absolutely brilliant! just like Never Say Die I would love a Steven Wilson remix and track list re-imagining which I did
for both albums that I feel flow better, just my humble opinion! and Loser Gets It All should have been on the album! Again Phil a great interview and Tony is amazing!
Thank you 🙏
The Tony Martin era was incredibly under rated, but I loved every album Black Sabbath recorded with him. The dude could sing. Ronnie James Dio and Ozzy were more celebrated by most Sabbath fans, however I liked the variety and the changes. Sabbath basically did what Rainbow always did. They hired really excellent singers that put their own stamps on the music. I'm am happy the new box set is officially revisiting that period.
I believe that Cross Purposes live is owned by PMI entertainment not IRS which is what BMG entertainment bought the rights to and and Edward Van Halen was under contract for another record company Warner Brothers when Cross Purposes studio album was released in 1994 which prevented the use of the track.
Band politics? $haron?
Its like watching your ex wife have kids with another dude. Ozzy and Dio had their time before the divorce to make a couple kids. As Tony Martin put out amazing music, he showed he could do all eras well.
🔥🔥🔥
Well … I’ve really got the hump now ..me box isn’t super till Wednesday…think I’ll have a sulk …😂😂
Bmg needs to fix headless cross on apple music it has problems most of the songs are broken and not functioning
How many copies did it sell?
Not sure of the print run but a second is on the cards
Go bald gracefully...don't cover it up! And yes, great interview, I saw Tony when he was in a band with a guy worked with (Bill Green) and Ray Horton (I went to school with) on drums. Cross Purposes (I played tonight on CD - original version), reminds me of the stuff that was done with Gillan. Listening to my CD's again today, love Neil Murray's fretless, really suits the songs.
Can’t have any “new “ Black Sabbath tracks? How about “the fallen” on the born again 2 disc deluxe?
And the Ray Gillen disc of deluxe Eternal Idol.
It was bootlegged before they remastered it. They kind of had no choice.
Agreement settled out of court in 2010 between Tony and Ozzy that no new material can be released unless 3 original members take place under the Black Sabbath name in the project .3 original members took place in the Born Again album yes the Fallen legally can be released under the agreement.
Eternal Idol deluxe edition CD is available on Sanctuary Records it was released on W.B . in 1987 not IRS which BMG entertainment bought the rights to and also released Rhino Records in the United States. Edward Van Halen was under contract for another record company in 94 which is why it was not released and Cross Purposes live is owned by PMI entertainment not IRS.
7* could possibly
released as a Tony Iommi solo album and Remastered in the future it was released on W.B. records in 86 and record made the executive made the decision for it to be released under the Black Sabbath name it could possibly be released under the Tony Iommi solo album in the future remixed or Remastered for BMG entertainment and Rhino Records in the United States.
I absolutely love the Tony Martin era and played those albums to death except Forbidden which shall be interesting to hear the remix.I have never liked Glenn Hughes, the moment he started yelping Georgia on stage with Purple and introducing ‘that shoe shine music’(quote,Mr.Blackmore)he lost me.Tony shouldn’t have worried.Dehumanizer seemed half baked and as mentioned interrupted the flow of things.Let’s see some respect for the TM era.
Excellent interview and discussion! Congrats to Tony Martin, Tony Iommi, Neil Murray, Geezer Butler, Bobby Rondinelli, Laurence Cottle, and in memory of the late Cozy Powell and Geoff Nichols, on this fantastic music from Black Sabbath’s history finally coming back to life re-released, remastered, remixed above expectations! Thank you to all that made it finally happen, long overdue and then some!
Just received the CD Box Set and heard some of it, thank you so much for putting a huge smile on my face ! Inmop., one of the best redo’s of previously released material ever! Long live the amazing legacy of the band Black Sabbath, Cheers!
🎤🎸🎸🥁🎹😈👍🏻🔥
"Chaotic mess".... a nice summary of how Sabbath seemed from mid 80s to 90s!
It's such a shame that the "Eddie Tapes" and all these unreleased tracks are available but legal wranglings stops us from every hearing them. They would have been amazing bonus tracks for this box set.
TYR is one of my most favorite albums ever, of any genre. Top 10 easily.
Yaaasss, more death!! What a wonderful interview Phil, major kudos to you. Tony Martin really seems like such a great guy - humble, gracious and aware of his place in Sabbath's history. So very happy for him and for those of us who have been waiting to hear this cool period of Black Sabbath
Thank you so much for this fantastic interview Phil. Great to hear about the possibility of a release of Cross Purposes Live. With the renewed interested in the era, I believe this will happen. Hopefully also a vinyl release of the Eternal Idol.
As far as the Sabbath website is concerned, overseen by Sharon, this era of Sabbath never existed. Or the Dio years. Both a travesty of ommision!
Fab interview and its great Tony is getting long over due and well deserved recognition I saw him live with Sabbath on both Headless Cross and TYR tours and was at Hammy O again for the Cross Purposes live taping they were all fantastic shows and Im loving the box set! I never even bought Forbidden back in 95 but boy this new version is incredible, all hail Tony “The Cat” Martin!
Fantastic interview. Love the box set, the albums sound fantastic now, especially the Forbidden remix. Tony Martin seems like such a great guy, would be nice to see him record some new material with Iommi, just call it Iommi/Martin and be done with it. They don't have to try and shoehorn everything into the Sabbath name
They are waiting for Robert Trujillo to re-record Bob Daisley's parts....that is why Eternal Idol was not included
Fantastic album, might be the best with Tony Martin
What a band that was, Bob Daisley, Tony Iommi, Eric Singer, and Geoff Nichols. Tony Martin on vocals. Even the demos with Ray Gillen are awesome.
Great interview, thanks Phil , already have vinyl and CD box set 🤘
Just bought the CD boxset! Excellent and very interesting interview as always!
My favorite Black Sabbath line-up after Dio. Forbidden is probably my number 1 off that line-up and Headless Cross is the 2nd. I REALLY loved Forbidden when it came out. And I still do. I just couldn't believe that in 1995 Black Sabbath sounded like a modern band, and not just an old band with a modern production.
RIP Cozy Powell
I must say the new remixed albums sound much better and as a long time Black Sabbath fan I think looking back over history it is clear to me that Tony Martin is the best singer the band ever had because of his voice and range he is the only one who could sing any song on all 19 albums.
Great to have Tony here on your channel. Nice and authentic guy! BTW.: just received my box set, and, as you said in your last review: A really great set - worth any single Euro.
TYR= Son of Odin= Thor!💡🤯
The albums Tony Martin did with Sabbath are very much underrated . He has a great voice , unfortuately, Sabbath have always seemed to be a band who have constantly chased the money . Hence the constant reunion attempts.
Fantastic interview Phil. Can’t wait for the vinyl box to arrive.
Hey Phil, great interview with a very nice chap, he seems to be in a good place and is enjoying some recognition for his brilliant work...finally. It is interesting that "they" chose to call the box Anno Domini with no mention of his name on the packaging ??? There was "B.S.- The Dio Years" disc , as you may recall. "B.S.- The Tony Martin Yrs." would have been more fitting, perhaps ?? Either way it is brilliant stuff...P.S.- I did see the tour back in '95, with Cozy ....fantastic !!
Great conversation, thank you Phil and Tony. Would love to of course get an official release for the unreleased tracks and have Tony Iommi & Tony Martin record again.
Great interview, Phil. I've always loved this period of Sabbath, and thought it was given short shrift. Sadly. Mr. Martin is not only a great singer, but seems a genuinely good person. I can't wait to get this set which centers on Tony's contributions to one of my favorite bands. Thanks again, Phil and Tony!
Wow, you are to be commended sir. This is the best, most indepth interview with Tony I've ever seen. Great job!
Wow, thank you!🙏
Great interview! I just listened to the remix of Forbidden.. WOW!!! Talk about bringing out the real power of the guitars and drums there. It’s like a blanket has been lifted off it. Brilliant!
Thank you 🙏 Forbidden is now a true Black Sabbath album
It’s no longer just an illusion of power, that’s for sure!😉
What a great interview Phil. A real joy to watch. I became a Black Sabbath fan in 1994 when Tony Martin was still in the band. I think you are totally right about these albums with Martin. They are Black Sabbath albums and for me as good or better as anything that came before. Headless Cross is in my top 3. Thank you Phil.
Thank you 🙏
Excellent interview Phil thank you! Glad to see he confirmed the name of Tyr. Believe it or not it was my first Sabbath album so it has a special place in my heart.
Great interview, got to upgrade to this , have them all on cassettes.
Thank you 🙏
I really enjoyed the Martin era of Sabbath and was honored to see them perform live twice during that time frame. Can't wait to receive my box set!!
Once again very nice interview 👍🤘
This is an absolutely awesome interview! I loved your review of the boxsets too! It really was wonderful. All of your reviews and your whole show. This interview though is just awesome. Tony Martin is such a cool guy and a wonderful singer and songwriter within Black Sabbath.💀🦇💀🦇💀
Thank you 🙏
If I understand correctly, there's a plan to re-release Cross Purposes Live in the future?
I hope so 🤞
Tony with Sabbath are my favorite records from the Sab's. Tyr is so awesome. I also love the last one Cross Purposes! Headless cross is great as well.
Great interview!!! Gonna order my box set today.
Awesome interview! I just got my box set last night. Sounds incredible! The forbidden album sounds much better now!
Thank you 🙏
Thoroughly enjoyed this.
I bought my box set as i do not have 3 of the allbums.
Tony cones across so well and so grounded.
I got him on the Rondinelli album,
Waiting Waiting Waiting for this set to arrive.
Another excellent recommendation Phil and what a great interview 😂❤
Greetings from Western Australia
I have several albums of those projects that Tony sang on, much of it is quite good!
I’m saddened that Cross Purposes Live and Headless in Russia aren’t on there. But I’m still ecstatic that these albums are available again.
