    The point of the fog lights being yellow is so you can see through fog and snow. The yellow light doesnt reflect off the snow or fog like the standard white bulbs do.

    If you are just going for show the LED bulbs are fine, however for the purpose of using fog lights for situation where it is raining, snowing or fog you would be better off with your original lamps. When you switch to a higher K bulb you get poorer vision in adverse weather. Your new bulbs may look brighter to the eye but in fact produce less lumens and the blue/white light color will not penetrate the water or snow as effectively as a low K bulb. That is why historically fog lights were orange in color, to penetrate the adverse weather conditions.

    I know they are called fog lights but would work as headlights?

    • @orange13
      @orange13 4 года назад

      they are called fog lights because they are mounted very low to the ground and have a wide beam pattern. Depending on regulations of the country you are in, you can use fog lights without the main head lights in dense fog conditions. the idea here is to avoid blinding yourself with the normal headlights and their reflection by fog. the low mounted fog lights won't cause as much self-blinding. So to answer your question, no, fog lights cannot be used as main head lights.

    • @itsruf1
      @itsruf1 4 года назад

      Highly doubtful. The H11 was already over DOT. Fogs is ok to have bright as you can turn them off. I'm replacing 886 style to h11 on a John Deere tractor (oem headlamp application) but I'm mostly on my property and when I'm on a road it's just up the street or plowing snow. There you can get away with being too bright.
      What you need to do is upgrade fog lamps or add off-road style lights. Make sure your fog housing won't melt. Some will! Ask a Polaris RZR owner. We all went thru this.

    • @orange13
      @orange13 3 года назад +2

      @@slyshootertony8496 a h7 is always a h7 (same for h1), they are not specific for headlights or fog lights. I'm guessing the only reason it says "fog lights' on the box is that they are NOT legal to use as a replacement for a headlight halogen bulb. In most (if not all) countries, a headlight is certified as a unit, the actual headlight plus the bulb. and if you replace the halogen bulb with a LED then you are no longer legal. the same might not be true for foglights. or you might find a disclaimer on the box saying "for offroad use only". Also, a precise beam pattern that doesn't dazzle oncoming traffic is way harder to achieve if you replace a halogen with a LED in the main headlights. Much less of an issue for the foglights.

    observation: "fog lights" is a misnomer. No-one should have ever named them that. When it actually is foggy or rainy they light the fog or rain forcing you turn them off. Right? Basically "fogs" have always been additional headlights for me. They help light up the road ahead. Usually to see deer or debris on the road. During fog you slow down. You don't turn more lights on. I don't. An on coming car will see you earlier with fog lights. But myself I won't use them for fog. I turn fogs off during fog. I think the term Fog was proper in the old days and we still use it.
    BTW have you noticed amber "fogs" became a thing of the past. They were annoying. Tells you something about the concept of a fog doesn't it?

    • @orange13
      @orange13 4 года назад

      Fog lights are purposely mounted low to reduce their light getting reflected by fog (or snow or heavy rain) back into the eyes of the driver. They work very well in that manner, much better than the main headlights which are mounted a lot higher.
      However, here in the US, the car’s light switch does NOT allow the fog lights to be turned on with the main headlights off. So yes, they become additional lights and therefore are less effective - or counter- productive - in heavy fog situations. In other countries, regulations allow running fog lights without running the main headlights. If the fog lights are the only front- facing lights on the car, they are very effective. So the concept of fog lights is still a good one but the way it is currently applied is not.
