They always have. It's written in the score to scoop certain notes. Meant to be contemporary American music. Not classical. Derric Johnson - the creator and arranger of the Voices of Liberty was adamant about his sopranos not sounding like classical singers.
@@peterlewis1061 I noticed that in previous years, they didn't scoop as much as they are recently. In the Tiffany Coburn era, it seemed more subtle, and less frequent.
@@jesuspectre9883 @peterlewis1061 I've always noticed it. I think it MAY have gotten more pronounced in the Voctave era - but that's just me. I have 2 of the original recordings of Voices of Liberty on vinyl and there was a LOT of scooping. The blend was not nearly as good as the later recordings (Acapella Americana and A Slice of A Capella) but I like it either way. :-) They're still remarkable musicians and vocalists.

They don't even look like Voices of Liberty! I think it's obvious why the change in sound!
