    I bought the NVMe hat from Waveshare and that one also ticks the 800 something MB/s with my Samsung EVO 980 Pro.
    One thing I don't like on most hats is that there is no way to have cooling on the NVMeEven worse, it's sandwiched such that there it hugs the (fairly hot) Pi5 board without any proper airflow between the boards ...
    This is screaming for a larger case where we do not sandwich the two boards but put them next to each other

  • @dmitryni

    How will you cool the nvme card during active operation? With this arrangement in the HAT, installing a heatsink is almost impossible, and the heating there is significant and the nvme card will also heat the processor.

    Since the NVME runs hot, why not add the cooling pads too? It will run even faster.

    I have the Pimoroni board but I experience pauses every so often. It’s as if the SSD has disappeared and then reappears again. Most odd. Using a Crucial NVMe 1Tb drive.

    awesome helpful video.
    i am still waiting for a decent rpi 5 case that can house an nvme board and is readily available. so far, that argon case is on my radar but hoping for better, readily available options with awesome cooling. maybe even keep the official cooler in the case since it beats most third party cooling options.

      I use the new FLIRC case for the rpi 5 and the Pimoroni NVMe base. You just can't use the plastic bottom part of the FLIRC, but you can put the little feet provided by Pimoroni on the NVMe base for stability. This way you still get the cooling from the metallic case + a little air gap on the bottom for the NVMe drive.

    I've been upgrading from Pi 2 to Pi 5 since two days. The performance difference is huge. But with SanDisk Extreme Pro Micro SD Card the system is already fast enough. I have the Pineboards Bottom Drive with a Samsung 256GB Gen3 SSD and the performance is good at around 800MB/s.
    But with everyday use there is no mutch difference in system snappyness, compared to using a decent micro SD.
    I have big plans with the Pi 5 so, the PCIe Slot will be used for a Sata controller

    Any recommendations for a case? I figure most of the usual cases are not designed for the bottom hat so adequate space and thus cooling could be an issue. The argument of NVMEs being more reliable than SD cards is often made in this context, but I suppose the SSD needs to "breath" in order for that argument to hold true.

  • @cx3268
    @cx3268 11 месяцев назад

    Most top hats interfere with the cooling. Still big issue with Pi5 and these hats, either top and/or bottom is good case. More & more cases are coming.

    It's not at HAT. It's a Base but it actually works better as a HAT because when I was using it with the official raspberry pi case the cable was blocking access to the sd card port and I actually had to modify the case to work with the base as a base. That should've given you a longer cable with it and they should've put a input and out on it of some kind so that you could format the drive from a computer if you had to because otherwise you have to keep on switching the boot order and using a sd car or flash drive to do it if you want to try different OS's because I haven't figured out how to do network installations,yet.

    Starts watching having ordered Pimoroni NVMe base the other day and still awaiting that and pi5 and case, so be fun. Thinkers crossed, though was cheap so it won't matter if it works.

    Nice comparison! I bought the Geekworm NVMe X1002 PCIe board and their P580 case. Other than interrupting wi-fi connectivity, it scores well in the benchmarks I ran.
    It would be nice to see a comparison to the x1002 as well... Do either the Pimoroni or Pineberry boards interfere with the wi-fi signal?
    When I first got my Pi 5, the ports on my switch were full so I started testing it on wi-fi. Running it on a Micro SD card without a case was fine. When I added the Geekworm board and the full case without the SSD it struggled to get a signal so I removed the cover of the case and it was okay again. Once I added the SSD all bets were off for wi-fi.
    Now I have a new switch and don't care about wi-fi, but I still wonder if HATs usually interfere with radio signals.

      I just received exact same case and hat (shoe?) and only just finished assembling it so haven’t had time yet to give it a workout. I’m curious as to how it handles the heat with active cooler in that case. A metal case such as the geek worm one will make wifi a non-starter ( Faraday cage)

    • @fernanddubois1792
      @fernanddubois1792 10 месяцев назад

      I was unable to get the X1002 to boot from a Crucial P3 1TB NVME while in the case. It boots fine outside the case . Tried turnining off wifi and Bluetooth but that didn’t help.

    • @figjoy
      @figjoy 10 месяцев назад

      @@fernanddubois1792 I'd carefully reseat the ribbon cable on both ends to ensure it isn't that. I noticed the cable gets pressed against the case when installed.

    i guess boot time depends on firmware (bios) which is stored in rpi (not on nvme), so it does not speed up but fast enough.
    if used for security why depend on just 1 device ?

    There are another NVMe Hats/Bottoms, lke Waveshare, Geekworm, 52Pi, even official RPI for short NVMe just need some extension! 😉
    I have the Waveshare PCIe To M.2 Adapter Board (C) which is NOT a Hat technically coz its next to the RPI, i also have a 52Pi N04 M.2 2280 PCIe To NVMe Top Extension Adapter which cost double compared Waveshare but did NOT worked i tried with many different cables, then i ordered Waveshare which with SAME config/SSD/Cable worked first "try" i also have a EDATEC Raspberry Pi5 Passive Cooling Open Case but i'm using ONLY the bottom coz at top i have a RPI Official Heatsink/Fan then put whole setup on Waveshare plastic bottom Board! 😎

    Dude, your video is great but the audio is terrible. You have very high level low frequency audio of only the filtered bass part of a music. Even the music is discenable. I'm watching on a full frequency home theather system with subwoofer. It is very disturbing and distracting. Just filter out the low frequencies, this much bass is totally unnecessary and irrelevant the subject of your video. I have to lower the volume to the point of not hearing your speech. If you don't have proper speakers, use a frequency analyzer plugin or listen with proper headphones.

      Good feedback, I was thinking the same, and that's only watching it on my pixel 6, sitting in the toilet 😅 But I get a feeling, that raspy sound is achieved on purpose. And not everyone is gonna be listening with a sub either.

    Well energy efficiency is something different. My NUC with much more horsepower does 3 Watts by running a NVMe SSD, Proxmox with several server tasks and so on. My other NUC with several USB HD drives and a TV tuner acting as an TV Stream and recording server for my cients is just doing 8 Watts. So no, not really efficent. Hoever much more powerful than the pervious PIs. Especially with an NVMe.
