  • This is a video collection of "Classic Djembes" and "Drum Circle Djembes" being hand crafted in Ghana, Africa by the Africa Heartwood Project.
    Description of Africa Heartwood Project:
Drums with heart. Drums that make a difference. Drums that were and are part of something living, dynamic, eternal. Each Heartwood djembe is a symbol of hope and sacrifice and partnership. In a market based economy where the imperative is to maximize profit at any cost, Africa Heartwood Project is using the free market as a humanitarian tool to generate sustainable livelihoods for hard-working artisans in West Africa who otherwise would not have access to markets large enough to provide for their families. With a long-term commitment to individual drum and instrument builders, AHP has given hundreds of hours of skills training and business mentorship, helped extend micro-loans and donated funds valuing thousands of dollars to purchase tools, buy land, build workshops, and purchase raw materials, and has helped to established solid distribution channels that will ensure that the artisans can count on income next month, next year, and through to the next generation. African Heartwood Project labors on behalf of the entrepreneurial artisans to keep their hands busy, bellies full, and hope alive.

What impresses me the most? No power tools. Not a single piece of modern tech touches those drums. I hope this art form never dies, it MUST be kept alive! Earlier in this thread someone said he bought one in Ghana for $50. I'd gladly pay twice that for all the work and talent that goes into constructing these. Amazing!!

Yeah but still, those tools have got to have some quality steel to hold an edge, especially those chisels and adze-like axes. Steelcraft like that is high tech.

I have a rather large djembe which is also built in Ghana. I wonder if I'm looking at the people who built mine. It sounds great. Sadly, I live on the 4th floor, and playing it in my apartment at full power would result in the police showing up.
PS: The sound on this video is really good. Good work!

every body,at some point in their life, should use a djembe, and ride a bicycle...it need not be at the same time or place,..our bodies will reach a common calibratation, the seeds of empathy will be sown, and then begins the dance...

@jhenry291 The tool at 0.49 is just a machete. The other tool... I don't know what they are called in Ghana, but woodcarvers here in the US call them "crooked knives." There ware some smaller versions available from Sweeden at a reasonable price.

most looks like this are made specifically for the maker by a blacksmith. I would start by sourcing car leaf springs, and if you're handy forge them yourself out of that material or find a local blacksmith who can make them for you.
