Thanks Wayne just took apart a 1989 0MC small barrel. Made a jig for our auto engine stand so we can turn it any way we desire. We made the oil drain air injection part by drilling a grade 5 -3/8" bolt then tapped the carrier holes 5/16th " used teflon tape dope around the head of the 5/16ths bolt heads to hold in the socket. For that tap we used a lavatory and hosebib fourway key and ground off the large T parts glued the tap in the smaller of the small ends and the other just fit a 1/4" ratchet drive with short extension. Put the washer and prop nut on to catch the carrier a plumbing compression test plug on top to plug that off put air to it and pop it came right out.
I see you used a special tool to remove the pinoin nut. I I used a long wrench I made with a straight angle. I used long needle straight nose pliers to put it back on. Simple shop aids made in my shop.
Very interesting and informative, nice job - thinking of buying a 1988 4WINNS with a 5.7l MerCruiser and OMC Cobra Outdrive. With knowledge gained from viewing this video, I would feel comfortable tacking this job myself --- once i got the proper tools.
My prop shaft is stuck inside the end! I’ve got everything off except the clutch dog, forward gear and what I assume is the shift assist! It feels like it’s still attached to the shift assist. How should I try to get this out?? Nice tool for the pinion gear bolt!! Impressive. I’m gonna make the same thing cause I’ll need it to reinstall!
Very helpful,I'm going to be doing this same thing over the winter to get it ready for next year. Also, loved it when you said ''I can't type worth a shit, but I can dial'',that's me!! LOL
Hi wayne, thanks for the vid. Got an 87 cobra 5.0 - replaced the gasket, new water pump, int water pickup seals seem snug and good, new water pump kit.. still zero water flow from pump?? I taped the water grates at the bottom and filled inlet hole with water - it stayed there! Stumped! I did notice exhaust gas coming up thru the tiny hole where the small rubber tube connects to housing - any ideas?
My omc cobra lower unit has 4 bolts that hold the hub in. Why is this different? Also after you pull the hub it looks like there are snap rings to get the rest out
Im missing one Wayne.lol.Where is the video that shows how to remove the bearing in the part that holds the shift detent so i dont have to buy that housing and the bearing? My first thought is dremel and diamond bit to slplit the old one.My second thought is I hate dremels lol.So please....I know you have the insight I need.Show me what you know.
