  • Sharpen a right hand 2 flute high speed steel drill with the Brierley grinder.
I had an older ZB21 machine and struggled with the manufacturers instructions which referred to locks and pins which were not on that machine.
Once I had this ZB32 I could see how it worked and could translate that to the older unit (after making a missing part). Other Brierley grinders will have the setting locks and stops arranged differently but the functional movements will likely be the same as this one.

Thank you very much for the video. Perfectly sequenced and edited. It takes a lot to learn all the aspects of the machine and then work around the camera to convey all of the proper information as well as you did here. As a person that learns much better by watching a video rather than reading a manual I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness in sharing the information. I will be watching the other videos on your channel particularly the ones about the drill grinder. I just purchased the ZB25 model secondhand and will definitely be benefiting from your instruction.

I was a Machinist in the US Air Force. Stationed at Grand Forks AFB ND. The Motor Pool had a Brierley Drill Bit Grinder that they did not use. For a short time I was acting Shop Chief after our Shop Chief got drunk and went AWOL The Motor Pool needed a couple of flywheels turned on the lathe. Being the Aircraft Machine Shop the vehicle's were not our reasonability.
I offered to swap machine work for the Brierley, the Motor Pool was fine with transferring ownership to us as the grinder was just colleting dust.
I played with the drill grinder but never really used the machine. I had gained the skill to sharpen bits by hand and for me it was quicker.

I have used mine for some interesting things over the years, will do a video to show them someday. Keep uploading!

      hi there
I sold a tidy ZB25 on Ebay for £510 with plane wheel ,dish wheel , correct drill setting post, 6 cams ,hub wrench, spindle lock, MT1 steady, drill centring tool and manual - which is enough to get you away and grinding.
I reckon for a bigger ZB32 on a cabinet in good nick as above (MT1/MT2 steady) around £1500 ..... expect to collect in person . Make sure the machine is original without shop made replacement bits. Look at a picture of inside the cabinet as unlisted extras may be hiding there.
If it comes from a dealer with all original spec and in good nick £2100.
Machines with all the buzzers and whistles don't come up too often. Mine came as you can see plus the dust extraction unit for £2500 from a dealer who mainly sold big CNC stuff so his regular clients weren't interested and it had been sitting around a fair bit.
There are other proper drill out there which look equally as good, the main thing is the machine is in original manufacturers condition .... so wait for a good one . Check completed items listings to gauge current market values

@@shedmade3264 I just picked up a ZB32, with assortment of parts. It’s filthy as it came from a foundry. Where I wipe the dust away, it looks great, plus chuck has no score marks from being in contact with wheels. It came with a load of stuff, cams, taper holders, drill gauge etc, but trying to work out which of the accessories relate to the grinder. There’s a U shaped piece of rod, with ends bent up, almost like a tool for undoing the central hub, but it’s too big; plus in addition to the spring loaded dresser, there’s another one, bigger in size to the end of the dresser tool - wondering if these are part of the accessories for it? Grinder motor is single phase 110 or 220 volts which is great!

I am currently re-commissioning a ZB32 which I have had for many years and your video has given me a better understanding of the machine. As you state, there appears to be many variations of these machines. The manual I have is type written and is different in many ways from the actual machine.
Do you use the grades of wheel recommended by Brierley, or something different?
Do find balancing really necessary. Someone once told me that modern abrasive wheels are much more uniform in structure such that balancing is not as critical these days. I don't have a balancing stand and arbor for my machine so I may run into problems if balancing is an issue.

    • @shedmade3264
      @shedmade3264  3 года назад +2

I stuck with the recommended wheels from Brierley, and the best finish I managed was with Norton white aluminium oxide wheels.
Make sure a wheel rings true - tap it to see if it is cracked as a starter for 10. If the machine is smooth as silk running without a stone, and then vibrates when a stone is on then there is a problem with the balance. Try dressing it. I am not convinced with the plastic snap in arbour adapters and prefer to make a bushing.
On my ZB 32 the arbour mount has adjustable balance weights on capheads. These will need to be evenly spaced . Have a look on youtube university - wheel information will be common to many grinders
