Search recent article about Eric Clapton's view on Jimmie Vaughn. Clapton spoke about his brother, Robert Cray and other of his favorites but Jimmie was the best in Clapton's opinion. I was surprised because Jimmie really is underrated and not mentioned much.
Jimmy is just great today. But he and his brother, Stevie Ray, basically kept the blues alive and helped prosper in the 80s. I live in Dallas and have seen them both play live several times. What an experience!
I know why he was so highly regarded on the blues scene in Austin when Stevie came on the scene. Jimmy was dominating the blues scene and Stevie's biggest influencer. He was Stevie's guitar hero. He thought there was none better than his brother Jimmie. Jimmie is a reckoning and a naturally talented player. They were born into music with musicians, particularly guitar players on both sides of their family. It's great to see Jimmie playing. He's a great player and a legend.
I love Jimmie as much as I love Stevie. Jimmie's style is one of my absolute favourite blues styles and sounds and moods. There's nothing like making coffee in the morning and listening to Jimmie play and sing. He's one of the absolute best to me. Love when he sat down with Gary Clarke Jr, I have to rewatch that every once in a while.
He may not be as well known among casual.mainstream rock listeners, but he is very highly regarded among musicians and, at this point in his career, I doubt he cares about how famous he is. He has nothing to prove.
@@jokermaan1 Because traditional, Chicago-style blues is what he’s moved to play…you know, the B.B. King way. Even in the Thunderbirds, his style was more restrained. Looking back, thank goodness, because he’s one of the few who stays true to it and is keeping that style of blues alive.

man i love it when jimmie vaughan sings. and as far as the guitar playing goes and the evolution of his style over the years, watch some old t-birds footage and you can see that the guy has forgotten more about guitar playing than the rest of us will ever know and he's finally distilled it to the most direct, unique thing possible for him.
I was there too! I was excited for the show but wasn’t prepared for Jimi burning the place down!! I don’t say this lightly but it was the coolest thing I have ever seen! My jaw was on the floor.

To be perfectly honest at first his guitar playing is different so you think he’s not a great guitar player and his fingers look weird on the neck. But then you listen and understand his artistry. Incredible musician.
The years have changed his style quite a bit. He’s not using a pick much anymore and the licks are much simpler than he used to play, but he puts on a great show.
Ive played guitar all my life and I never used a pick. The traditional way is finger picking. If ya know anything about playing, you know it's best played with no pick. It is not easy. Try it and see, son. Bless you. Have a good year dear. -Jen

That's a misconception that you have to be playing constantly. things called note value timing so much .more two things with hundred of things. In playinggood slow blues
With all due respect to Eric Clapton Jimmy is better. More authentic. Even my friend Ron Thompson said Eric Clapton is a perfectionist and everything he does and is hard to work with sometimes and is who he is. But the Vaughn Brothers I say just have something that the British blues players don't have. Exception to the rule Peter Green.
I really enjoyed this...but I honestly think if Jimmy wasn't SRV's brother, he would only be playing at unpaid weekend jams...if that. It probably blasphemous for me to say that, but if I was looking to hire a lead guitarist for a blues band, he wouldn't make the cut. For someone to compare him to Eric Clapton,and then claim that he is superior to Clapton, it's utterly rediculous. Jimmy only has a couple of licks in his trick bag and he repeats them over and over again...I'm sorry of this offends anyone, but it is fact. I give him credit for teaching SRV when he first started out though. Without Jimmy, there probably wouldn't have been an SRV...and that says a lot.

Let me say that having seen JLV Live and stood feet away I can vouch for his ability to bring a crowd to screaming point with his mastery of understatement and restraint. His choice of notes in My Babe and overall vibe is magnificent. You missed it and that’s okay. He makes a point of playing the way he does for a reason.. not because he can’t. I love the guy’s tone and sense of style…. SRV was a force of nature, unremitting and intense and also magnificent. JLV is more refined but no less capable.

However, I think what you are getting with Jimmy is at his fullest capabilities . I think he is tapped out in that regard. It's just my opinion, and im no virtuoso, but it's also not like I don't know what I'm talking about. His style is sloppy and his technical knowledge is restrained yes, but I don't think he is restraining himself. He just can't play any better than he does. Maybe I haven't seen the live videos you are watching, though. I'm only speaking on the live videos I've seen. And I'm just being 100% completely honest. He is gonna have hard-core fans just because he is SRVs brother...I get that...but had he not been, I don't think he would be considered a master guitarist based on his live skill set. He literally plays the same licks over every songs guitar break. If you have videos to share with me to show me that I am wrong, please share. I would love to see it. I've been searching for them, but I haven't had any luck myself. His work on recordings is much better than his live stuff, but in studio you get as many takes as you need. Another guitarist that doesnt live up to his master status live is Slash...he is amazing on his studio stuff, but I think he probably does many takes and they just mix and match his best parts. When he plays live, you get a totally different experience. He doesn't "suck" live, but if you were to base his skills on live performance, he wouldn't be called a guitar god. His playing is over rated because everyone is basing it on his studio work and ignoring his live performances flaws. There's nothing wrong with being raw and making mistakes, because everyone makes mistakes, but let's be real. Sloppy is sloppy...clean is clean...you can't call someone that plays sloppy a master and then claim his sloppiness is just part of his genius, just because it justifies his undeserved title as a guitar master. He had whatever it was then a has been after TFT. He is not a great guitarist. A chicken plucker who brother was a epiphany of soul, grit, extreme effort and talent who took him under his wing, made him relevant for a short, short while and then since SRV is gone, everyone thinks a little Vaughn is better than no Vaughn. I was given tickets to see him and I didn't walk across the street. If you want to see a lot more Vaughn check out Chris Duarte, Joe Bonamassa, Phillip Sayce, Josh Smith, Ian Moore, Eric Gales, Kirk Fletcher......ETC...
Tbh Clapton should be the one opening for Jimmie… but Clapton had some pop hits so he’s got lots of money for his tours and top billing… but his guitar playing is staler than my month old bread. Just look at how much more energy Jimmie has compared to EC.
I don't know how people play with capos. If I bend the strings like that they move around on me under the capo and go out of tune. I can solo pretty well in blues but never liked using a capo for anything lol. I just learn more chords and shapes instead of using them. I'm not knocking anybody that uses them, but they just don't work for me and never made sense to use them to me. If you have a great guitar with a solid bridge and nut, it seems like you take away some of that solid nature and structural integrity that holds the strings in tune. Capos just always feel weird to me, because they change the feel of the action on the neck, too. Props to anybody who can use them like that, I'm not trying to hate on capos, they just don't compute with my brain and play style. It also annoys me when somebody uses a capo at a jam, but doesn't know what chords they are actually playing and puts it on me to try and transpose what they are doing on the spot because all they can tell me is this is an E or A or whatever when they are just playing that shape and don't know what the actual chord is, lol. It's not so bad if its a simple 3 chord blues song, but if you use a capo at a jam session at least have the common curtesy to know the chords you are playing, so you can tell the other guys/ gals that don't have one (especially the bass player) where your at, lol. Especially if the song you are wanting to play with everybody has a crap ton of chord changes, lol. It's a dirty thing to do to a bass player for sure to not know the actual changes and expect everybody to cater to you because you can't be bothered to learn more chords, lol. I guess I am hating on capos, but only if it's that kind of capo user, lol. Jimmie Vaughan is obviously a pro and knows what he is doing so don't get it twisted and think I am criticizing him. I think its amazing he can play that good using one.

If these older legacy artists really wanted to “keep the blues alive” then why don’t they at least invite one young aspiring blues artist up each show they do to get some recognition. At least BB King kind of did that with Derek trucks and his wife when they were younger. His playing is mediocre at best, and honestly he doesn’t even look like he knows why he is there nor cares as much anymore. Aside from his roots and clout in Austin’s scene, he is and always was a hack guitar player , even in his time with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, it was corny as heck..This is nothing more than a Shameful effort to sell tickets to the remaining alive nationwide fan base his brother built back in the day. The band has no life, looks like an old local blues jam full of stuffy fake Zoot suit guys, awful. Again not trying to be a downer, I got some blues on my channel if anyone wants a fresh take. Thanks
I understand where you are coming from, but there are still people willing to pay to see it and that says something. As long as there is a market for any band no matter who they are, they should keep going. People still like to see them old boys because they like to go pay their respects to the craft. Or, maybe they never got a chance to see him and want to cross it off the bucket list. I was lucky to see BB King twice before he passed away, and he was still as good as ever. Some guitar players age like fine wine, and BB was one of them. His style was never that crazy fast or aggressive and as he aged he got even smoother.
@@masonblakely6535 Thats only because he was the one who taught him how to play. Stevie looked up to him for that and because he was his brother. So that’s the context in which Stevie said that. If Jimmie was truly superior, then he would be the household name and not Stevie.

Jimmie’s playing makes me cringe as it’s so bad, Stevie Ray was born with all of the talent and was a true guitar legend!

I understand where you are coming from, but there are still people willing to pay to see it and that says something. As long as there is a market for any band no matter who they are, they should keep going. People still like to see them old boys because they like to go pay their respects to the craft. Or, maybe they never got a chance to see him and want to cross it off the bucket list. I was lucky to see BB King twice before he passed away, and he was still as good as ever. Some guitar players age like fine wine, and BB was one of them. His style was never that crazy fast or aggressive and as he aged he got even smoother.

Not only is he only half as good as Stevie, he only plays half as much while in stage. A very lazy blues man.

@@masonblakely6535 Thats only because he was the one who taught him how to play. Stevie looked up to him for that and because he was his brother. So that’s the context in which Stevie said that. If Jimmie was truly superior, then he would be the household name and not Stevie.

@@CreamofTweaty I never said he sounded like him. Robert Johnson doesn’t sound like Charley Patton but they’re both considered to be some of the greatest blues artists.
@@Xcorgi lol no I just think real recognizes real. They had different playing styles. If Jimmy played Montreaux and Bowie and Jackson Browne recognized him, history could have been different. I love SRV and also don’t think guitar playing is a contest. But to call Jimmy a lazy blues man is just beyond ridiculous.
I think he's a GREAT singer but pretty poor guitar player.
