Nay. I have my One R with 360 and 4k. I love to do 360 but the 4k mod stays in the bag most of the time. Maybe when they release a new 360 mod that only works with the RS. And I'm a bit afraid that new app functions will be exclusively for the RS for no reason... like it was with the one x2. Thanks for your videos Ben!

We really needed far more resolution on 360 res by now. re-cropping in post is what I think most people are doing and... resolution really is everything for that purpose....
100%. I think the limitation could be in smartphone editing ability… they heavily push mobile workflows with their cameras, but I don’t know of many phones that could handle 8k editing unfortunately. That’s my guess.
@@BenClaremont my new phone shoots 8k... it may be close to solved.... i mean, as soon as you exceed 4k, thats where the trouble is. The last couple years qualcom chips all support 8k playback....
agree - reframing suffers a lot from low resolution.. i often get nice shots, and then i think: man, i should have use the pocket 2 or Gopro for that 4 years later, after the OneX I think we should have. 5,7k SmartphoneStiching and 8k stiching on the PC in the package and size of OneX2 the computingpower of the chips has improved more than twice ofter that time there is already the qoocam, seems to have had termal issues at the beginning.. still ?
Perfect review. You are the only one honestly talking about the lack of technical update of the 360 degree module. Basically, the resolution has been unchanged for 2, maybe 3 years.

Absolutely agree. As someone who shoots almost exclusively in 360, glad to see a straight up answer. Might buy a battery and that transfer accessory later though.
I appreciate the honest review. My OneR works well except the 360 mod makes the view upside down on the view screen. Gyro calibration cannot complete processing. So it's broken. Customer care seemed to have a language barrier. Still works but is hard to use with upside down view screen. Hard to decide if should continue with the brand. I wish I could just reset the camera or send it in. Although I don't need the new camera, I would like a second one so I could stop switching the mods.
I wanted another 360 camera after killing my old One X. Waited for this release and... then ordered a Hero Max! They are all still so similar in quality and I edit on PC using Davinci Resolve so the phone app doesn't make the difference. What is important to me is that I record for several hours at a time and all Insta360 cameras including this one have gaps of 3-to-9 seconds between each 30min recording in 360 format. These gaps don't happen on the Max which makes it easier to sync with other cameras... sold!

@BenClaremont I just purchased the ONE RS and have noticed the audio picks up everything. I can hear the creeks of the camera housing when moving it around, as well as telescoping the selfie stick. Have you had this experience as well?

A helpful review. I have holding off buying, in expectation of a new model. I was hoping for more 360 resolution too. But, at least I can buy this now and it should be good enough.
I'm still thinking, I want to buy a 360 camera. Not necessarily an action camera. More for photos and videos 360. Even filming in real estate. I was still watching insta360 one x2. But now with the new camera launched, I'm undecided. What do you recommend? Insta360 One X2 or Insta one RS?
I originally purchased the One RS 1-Inch 360 Edition (with the One RS core) for some real estate tours I was doing. Now, I want to be able to submerge an action camera so I just purchased the 4K Boost lens, battery base, and mounting bracket from the camera in this review! So cool that Insta360 made it modular so we can swap between them for different use cases!

They are doing cash grabs and are dependent on influencers to push their products. Beyond that, have you seen the color science? Garbage. Yellow video, the artifacts are awful… it’s cringe. Now, new sensor right? Ben, did you see the little prompt that Sais don’t use certain video features at night? Lol 😂 if you’re adding this latest and greatest sensor you would think there would be marked improvement.. I would love to see more night cideos
@@EyeCanShootFL You'll need to understand night photography a bit better. Try to shoot ANY night shot, features or not, on a Go Pro. Shoot, try to get quality night shots on your phone, or even some DSLRs. You won't see general consumer 360 cams with excellent night footage. The 1 inch mod can get decent quality, but all these actions cams have very small sensors. If you're having any issue with colour or quality, it's best to shoot in RAW and edit afterwards. The biggest benefit to Insta360, imo, is post editing.
For me at 8:53 comparison of shots in the garden. The one on the left (RS?) was shaky or had some kind of twitch, can you confirm that? Looked quite annoying to my eyes where as right shot (R?) was well stable.
Are we really that surprised about the seemingly minor upgrades? We see this every launch with Insta360. They drop the camera and then blast it with updates after feedback. I can't count how many "I was wrong about the Insta360" videos I've seen after about 6 months of usage lol. The biggest upgrades are going to be in the core, and I'm pretty confident they'll be gaining that 20% as you mentioned in the next quarter or two. I WOULD like to see them release updated lenses anyway, though.
+1 Hi Ben - great review :) - it would be fantastic to know the difference in webcam experience between ONE RS 4K Boost and ONE RS 4K 1-inch. My particular usage is as a single person participating in a meeting, so the ability to switch to a smaller the FOV is very useful. Also many of my meetings are at odd times of day or night with other participants in far away time-zones, so lighting may be less than ideal, and being able to cope with a wide dynamic range is very useful too. Someone else on a different site hinted that the ONE RS 4K 1-inch doesn't focus as close, but I cant spot any details in the specs about that.
What can you recommend to someone like me who's buying my first action camera who wants to shoot 360 and standard 4k? Is the new One RS a better choice than the older One R?

@4:48 You mention that the One RS is "sharper" in terms of image quality compared to the iPhone. Are we looking at the same photos here, especially zoomed in? The iPhone is MUCH more crisp and less noisey when zoomed in.
A few months ago I bought a GoPro Hero 11 Black together with the "MOD case" to add further functionality, as a Pro-Creator I needed a high specification "POV" camera to add additional, even B reel footage, to content produced by Sony A7r3a cameras. The impressive specifications, not least 10 bit video, sold me the GoPro . . . and how EVERY single day since have I regretted the purchase! I transfer content to a PC for editing, I don't need a "phone app", I don't want to use the "cloud" yet the damn thing insist that is the only way but worst issue is that it eats batteries just keeping the clock running and the only sane way to transfer file to a PC is to take the f***ing thing to pieces to get at the SD card! The modular layout of the Insta360 One (R or RS) is vastly superior! Users are leaving GoPro in serious numbers for those and many other reasons so what Insta360 One needs to do NOW is to increase the specifications to allow their units to do 10 bit video and copy GoPro's "8 x 7" aspect video . . . then they just might end up with the market leader.
Where is the second lens?! in order to shoot 150°/180° VR SBS 5K movie.... Ok, VR doesn't like the movement due to the illness but anyway, when i see the form factor of this camera, i think that would be perfect for 3D even for a less wide one (70°/100°)
💯 You are the GOAT! All killer no filler. Everything you said was true especially everything 360 and about the updates. Don't forget GoPro hero Max support for Windows users is non-existent. This is what eventually turned me on to insta360 and I've never regretted selling my hero Max. Instas360 editing software is the easiest for consumers using Windows.
The price is really great, its on sale now for $269 on amazon. But I have the OneR. the biggest improvement I see is case! you had to take the lens protector off the 1 inch lens to install with old case. I think I will just get the the case for now. Now the 1 inch 360, that is a whole new ballgame!
Hi Ben. I’m looking at buying the new rs. Does the one inch mod work any different from the older R mod. Also does the 1 inch mod take better photos & video than the new 4k super lens.
Is there matterport alternative that doesn’t force you to have active listings? I want to work with apartments but they’ll keep their listing up for a couple of years, so it doesn’t make sense for me to work with big clients since I’ll lose money for keeping an active listing for years. Has the lens fogged problem been solved?I have seen many users in reality saying that 360 panoramic lenses have fogging problems. But I can't seem to see this statement online, very strange.
Nice update but I will stick to my One R til a higher than 5.7k 360 camera comes out...I prefer the form of the ONE X...I always reframe my 360 footage to 16x9 and better quality would be great...as long as I can still use an app on my iphone...much easier to edit. But nice update
People ask why would you shoot pics with an action cam and not a phone? The answer is on beach vacations. We were in Hawaii a few years ago and it was great leaving the phones in the car. I'm always worried someone will steal them while we swim. We brought a GoPro and it was so nice! And in good light, they take very good pics.

Hello Ben, great videos, thinking of getting into the video/vlog/document world and stumbled on the One RS. Learning a lot from your content. Not sure which direction I will take this, but I would like to use it on construction sites, either taking 360 images for ref views (many variable light conditions) or walk around videos. Would be great for travel and document buildings and details. I use my small panasonic LX100 as well for travel. I see the ricoh comparison but that might be too delicate on a construction site. Would it be better to get the older insta360 and upgrade the modules later? Thanks
Hi Ben. It's a nay from me I'm afraid! Like so many other people out there I have been diligently waiting for insta to give us a 360 camera with improved frame rates and resolution. On significant upgrade in either department means I'll probably wait for the next one. Who knows; maybe insta realise that there's loads of people out there (like myself!), that already own a one R, or X2. But, thanks to whats been going on over the last 2 years, have been unable to use it to its full potential. So, I think I'll wait to see what the X3 (or one XS), has to offer. But in the meantime, I'll keep using my one R, because I enjoy it!

Just got the original OneR for a bargain only to find out you can’t get the audio adapter anymore 😡 The sound is pretty poor and this one didn’t sound much better. If they’d only release a firmware update so any usb-c mic will work.
I'm curious about the webcam function. How it works if it's 360 mode versus split view. I found the webcam options of this camera better than GoPro. Does it need to have software installed in the computer to used the One RS as a webcam?
First of all i really like your honest review like i do with all of your video's. Saw several reviews and my conclusion is that the GoPro had a better and sharper image, yes it is expensive but buying it with a subscription makes it a good deal. And I agree with your conclusion, but it is not strange either. Like other tech, once great innovations come to an end, making something good better is the only thing to do.
It seems like a solid upgrade from first One R. The Action camera module seems much better on the RS, and the in-camera stabilization is nice. I don't have the One R, I own Insta360 One X2, and for an action camera I use the Hero 10. So I don't really see anything here to make me switch from my current setup. But if I didn't already own the gear I do, I would consider getting this system. Great review Ben, and thanks for sharing.
mics still sounds terrible ;/ (maybe firmeware update will help) but still only one screen on camera, when 2 x its normal right now (osmo action 1, action 2, gopro 9, gopro 10, and also akaso)

Great review... I had the 360 One R and sold it, did not like the modular approach. I have the 360 oneX2 and for a 360 camera it isn't bad but again the video quality is not good as say my phone. Now the camera I do like is the little GO2. This little camera you can get those stabilized shots quick and the 2K video is very good. So I am glad I saw you review, saved me $$$. Dave..
Hopefully this unit is also a dual speed sensor, Gopro cheapened out with the last 3 models and just used a NTSC sensor with some software resampling for PAL output. The easy way to tell is put the camera in PAL mode and see the lowest shutter speed, if it's 1/25 then the camera is running native PAL if it's 1/30 then it's resampling from NTSC.
Mr Ben: it might be interesting to see if there is a difference between the One R and the One RS when using it under low light circumstances. edit: annoyingly several reviewers rave about the 'invisible selfie stick' and 'AI removing the selfiestick'; when do they understand that's nothing special and not at all AI related?

I can't count how many "I was wrong about the Insta360" videos I've seen after about 6 months of usage lol. The biggest upgrades are going to be in the core, and I'm pretty confident they'll be gaining that 20% as you mentioned in the next quarter or two. I WOULD like to see them release updated lenses anyway, though.

+1 Hi Ben - great review :) - it would be fantastic to know the difference in webcam experience between ONE RS 4K Boost and ONE RS 4K 1-inch. My particular usage is as a single person participating in a meeting, so the ability to switch to a smaller the FOV is very useful. Also many of my meetings are at odd times of day or night with other participants in far away time-zones, so lighting may be less than ideal, and being able to cope with a wide dynamic range is very useful too. Someone else on a different site hinted that the ONE RS 4K 1-inch doesn't focus as close, but I cant spot any details in the specs about that.
What can you recommend to someone like me who's buying my first action camera who wants to shoot 360 and standard 4k? Is the new One RS a better choice than the older One R?

I’d get a new 360 lens as it will likely be another year now until Insta release a follow up 360 camera (One X3)

in my understanding, only the 4k lens mod had an upgrade? The 360 and 1 inch is the same? For example, if you already bought the twin edition before for the R, you only need to buy the 4k edition for the RS (if you plan to upgrade)?
I've got the Insta 360 One X. Considering upgrading but don't know to which camera (no mind-blowing upgrades) 😅 Is the One RS a good upgrade for me you think? How about stitching lines considering the thicker frame? And need for a underwater case to shoot 360° below the surface?

You mention that the One RS is "sharper" in terms of image quality compared to the iPhone. Are we looking at the same photos here, especially zoomed in? The iPhone is MUCH more crisp and less noisey when zoomed in.

doesn't make sense to up from 6k. Better HIgher frame rates, like 480 or getting up to 960@1080. And better low light.
A few months ago I bought a GoPro Hero 11 Black together with the "MOD case" to add further functionality, as a Pro-Creator I needed a high specification "POV" camera to add additional, even B reel footage, to content produced by Sony A7r3a cameras. The impressive specifications, not least 10 bit video, sold me the GoPro . . . and how EVERY single day since have I regretted the purchase! I transfer content to a PC for editing, I don't need a "phone app", I don't want to use the "cloud" yet the damn thing insist that is the only way but worst issue is that it eats batteries just keeping the clock running and the only sane way to transfer file to a PC is to take the f***ing thing to pieces to get at the SD card! The modular layout of the Insta360 One (R or RS) is vastly superior!
Users are leaving GoPro in serious numbers for those and many other reasons so what Insta360 One needs to do NOW is to increase the specifications to allow their units to do 10 bit video and copy GoPro's "8 x 7" aspect video . . . then they just might end up with the market leader.

💯 You are the GOAT! All killer no filler. Everything you said was true especially everything 360 and about the updates. Don't forget GoPro hero Max support for Windows users is non-existent. This is what eventually turned me on to insta360 and I've never regretted selling my hero Max. Instas360 editing software is the easiest for consumers using Windows.
I'm still in GoPros 360 beta testing group for Windows. It's a joke.

The price is really great, its on sale now for $269 on amazon. But I have the OneR. the biggest improvement I see is case! you had to take the lens protector off the 1 inch lens to install with old case. I think I will just get the the case for now. Now the 1 inch 360, that is a whole new ballgame!

Hi Ben. I’m looking at buying the new rs. Does the one inch mod work any different from the older R mod. Also does the 1 inch mod take better photos & video than the new 4k super lens.
Is there matterport alternative that doesn’t force you to have active listings? I want to work with apartments but they’ll keep their listing up for a couple of years, so it doesn’t make sense for me to work with big clients since I’ll lose money for keeping an active listing for years. Nice update but I will stick to my One R til a higher than 5.7k 360 camera comes out...I prefer the form of the ONE X...I always reframe my 360 footage to 16x9 and better quality would be great...as long as I can still use an app on my iphone...much easier to edit. But nice update
People ask why would you shoot pics with an action cam and not a phone? The answer is on beach vacations. We were in Hawaii a few years ago and it was great leaving the phones in the car. I'm always worried someone will steal them while we swim. We brought a GoPro and it was so nice! And in good light, they take very good pics.

Hello Ben, great videos, thinking of getting into the video/vlog/document world and stumbled on the One RS. Learning a lot from your content. Not sure which direction I will take this, but I would like to use it on construction sites, either taking 360 images for ref views (many variable light conditions) or walk around videos. Would be great for travel and document buildings and details. I use my small panasonic LX100 as well for travel. I see the ricoh comparison but that might be too delicate on a construction site. Would it be better to get the older insta360 and upgrade the modules later?

It's a nay from me I'm afraid! Like so many other people out there I have been diligently waiting for insta to give us a 360 camera with improved frame rates and resolution. On significant upgrade in either department means I'll probably wait for the next one.
Who knows; maybe insta realise that there's loads of people out there (like myself!), that already own a one R, or X2. But, thanks to whats been going on over the last 2 years, have been unable to use it to its full potential.
So, I think I'll wait to see what the X3 (or one XS), has to offer. But in the meantime, I'll keep using my one R, because I enjoy it!

Question - can you charge cam (as action cam) and record with it in the same time? Also - how do you charge this camera? If cam is in mounting bracket - can you plug in cable and charge it with powerbank?

Just got the original OneR for a bargain only to find out you can’t get the audio adapter anymore 😡 The sound is pretty poor and this one didn’t sound much better. If they’d only release a firmware update so any usb-c mic will work.
Does flowstate stabilization works on higher frame rate ?
I'm curious about the webcam function. How it works if it's 360 mode versus split view. I found the webcam options of this camera better than GoPro.

First of all i really like your honest review like i do with all of your video's.
Saw several reviews and my conclusion is that the GoPro had a better and sharper image, yes it is expensive but buying it with a subscription makes it a good deal.
And I agree with your conclusion, but it is not strange either. Like other tech, once great innovations come to an end, making something good better is the only thing to do.
It seems like a solid upgrade from first One R. The Action camera module seems much better on the RS, and the in-camera stabilization is nice. I don't have the One R, I own Insta360 One X2, and for an action camera I use the Hero 10. So I don't really see anything here to make me switch from my current setup. But if I didn't already own the gear I do, I would consider getting this system. Great review Ben, and thanks for sharing.
mics still sounds terrible ;/ (maybe firmeware update will help) but still only one screen on camera, when 2 x its normal right now (osmo action 1, action 2, gopro 9, gopro 10, and also akaso)

Great review... I had the 360 One R and sold it, did not like the modular approach. I have the 360 oneX2 and for a 360 camera it isn't bad but again the video quality is not good as say my phone. Now the camera I do like is the little GO2. This little camera you can get those stabilized shots quick and the 2K video is very good. So I am glad I saw you review, saved me $$$. Dave..

Hopefully this unit is also a dual speed sensor, Gopro cheapened out with the last 3 models and just used a NTSC sensor with some software resampling for PAL output. The easy way to tell is put the camera in PAL mode and see the lowest shutter speed, if it's 1/25 then the camera is running native PAL if it's 1/30 then it's resampling from NTSC.
The GoPro still has better stability and I think the 11 will wayout do this. Also go pro possibly have a modular device coming
Mr Ben: it might be interesting to see if there is a difference between the One R and the One RS when using it under low light circumstances.
edit: annoyingly several reviewers rave about the 'invisible selfie stick' and 'AI removing the selfiestick'; when do they understand that's nothing special and not at all AI related?

It's gotten better, but it will still have a more noticeable stitch line when up close compared to the One X2

I’m thinking about ordering this one because I have a lot of festivals and concerts that I go to and like having a camera separate from my phone so I don’t drain my phone battery getting pictures, so would this be a good option? Carrying around my digital camera gets too cumbersome at an all day type of event. What would the best settings be?
You could look at the go 2 or dji action 2 to be honest. Form factor seems to be a major point for you.
