Great cityscape photography Gary!..and thanks for talking thru the settings!!..Hope to see more..We love ya on this side of the pond!!..Mike DuPonte..Tampa,Florida.
Thank you Gary, Awesome shots, I just adore reflection shots. It was fantastic to hear that enthusiasm in your voice. Keep it up, catch your next vlog.
Very nice Gary, I visited the keys last year when I went to see my sister but I've never seen them at night. It really is a nice place and I'm proud to say I was born just a few miles from there. Good work.
Q. Are reccie worth doing, YES. I always look for new locations even if i only have my mobile phone camera to try out and keep for reference, pin them on the google maps. Great shots gary got to try some myself in Ipswich.
Cheers Shaun, I just GOGGLED "places to photograph in mazarron spain" WOW what a cracking place. You should vlog, wait a minute you do... Subscribed! Just a quicky, Do you intend to get off auto? If you bought a tripod and some cheap ND filters it would greatly improve your Landscapes.

Thank you Gary, I may just get off the Auto - one day!!! got loads of filters but very true must knuckle down and try some long exposures!!!! Spain is a fantastic place to explore with a camera!!! Many thanks for joining my channel Gary - you may learn some tips :)
Love it, I actually work there every day, but have never thought off taking photos here, think you've just inspired me to take my camera to work and stay behind after work and capture some amazing shots like yours, thank you
Fantastic Gary, I'm relatively new to your channel but your style of photography is inspiring and will certainly be tuning in for more, your confident uplifting style of vlogs certainly makes you stand out from the others too..... well done.
right gonna have to put these on my list of places to go shoot, absolutely lovely images gary.Clarence dock and the royal armouries in leeds are good for the blue hr
thanks for this inspired me to make the short journey to Leeds dock and it was worth the trip not as big an area as Salford Quays but good as a practice run ... i Fancy photographing the City of Art and Science in Vealencia next just in the planning stages
Hey Gary always love your shots and humour; the only thing I love more is your processing techniques. I have watched your Black and White processing video and got some insights. I use Silver Effex also and then double process in Topaz using a luminosity blend layer after Silver Effex. It's amazing for punching colours or fine contrast and saturation. Anyways, I would love to see more videos on you're post processing techniques. As an aside; you play a mean slide guitar!
Hi John, Very kind comments, I can't thank you enough. I'll do a Post Processing video soon I promise although my philosophy is less is more, if you know what I mean? I'm intrigued, what does the "slide guitar" comment mean? :) I hope it's nice lol
Hi Gary thanks for the reply on metering but what meter in the camera are you using multi, center weighted Spot! could you talk more on the Lee AP you mentioned thank you.
Nice vid again Gary! I noticed that your f number was always very high. Is this because a higher f number is better for blue hour or you wanted the starbursts on the lights or both?
Firstly thank you. My F number was high simply because I needed to achieve a long shutter speed, no other reason. F11 is my normal go-to aperture for landscapes.
Oh, Gary, please stop making these inspiring blogs, it makes me want to shot more photos. Great recce and look forward to seeing more great images. Don't stop what you are doing.
lol I look forward to the mention :) Seriously though go start a vlog, it's a lot of fun. It's time consuming but it's really cool to see your friends list grow :)
Recces are most certainly worth doing and it's amazing how often you come away with an unexpected good shot. I had hoped to visit Manchester on my way back up to Scotland from Brighton but the terrible events of last month happened a couple of days before I was due to visit. Instead I went to see the sculptures by Antony Gormley on Crosby beach. Well worth a visit if you haven't been. Keep the vlogs coming they are very enjoyable and you are taking some great shots. Love the processing on your shots too and would be interested in vlogs about that if you have teh time. One wee technical question - I'm struggling to work out why you were shooting iso 320 and F22 30 sec exposures on some of the shots with no need for huge dof. I can't see an advantage in upping the iso at night when you could have opened up the f-stop. I often come home and think what the heck did I do that for when there were better options but in the heat of teh moment and with changing light sometimes it is find any setting that works rather than missing the moment thinking of what would be best. Not a criticism just wondering if I am missing something. thanks Simon
Hi Simon, thanks for the comments and the continued support. I took that shot at ISO 320 so I could maintain a 30 second exposure. I could of like you said, opened the aperture to gain the same 30 second result. I don't mind raising my ISO but opening the aperture is probably a more intelligent option :) I haven't shot the Antony Gormley Statues on Crosby beach yet but it's on my list. Question back at you... tide in or out?
I went on a rising tide and the best shots were around the 8 metre mark. If I had the choice I would have went on a falling tide so footprints weren't an issue. Not much colour when I was there but still got a few decent shots. It is very muddy down at the water even a couple of hours after low tide but when you get up to around the 8m mark it is starting to become sandier. The sun sets in a good spot at the moment so could be a good place for a shoot. Take all that with a pinch of salt as I was only their once on a "recce". I'll definitely go back though as it is a great place for photos. Here was my favourite from my short trip. www.flickr.com/photos/caughtinamber/34523712110/in/datetaken-public/ There is also a jetty which is good to shoot when the tide is around the 8M mark too see here www.flickr.com/photos/caughtinamber/34910930915/in/datetaken-public/ Keep the vlogs coming, essential viewing for me.
Nice vlog been there a few times , war museum building great architecture, word of warning its private land been collard a couple of times by security 😱 try Castlefields by the Science and Industry museum Manchester.
Recces are always a good idea Gary, as I find it helps in deciding best compositions and best time of day to revisit. I love cityscapes, especially at night. Not sure about the B&W conversion though, as you lose the lovely reflections in colour, which really adds to the image. What's your view on cloning out the lifebuoy casing? And, if you are fired up by Manchester (which is a great City), you need to get yourself down to London as there are loads of opportunities, both in the West End, the City and Canary Wharf.
Yep Recces are great. I like the yellow Buoy as it adds to the foreground interest but I can see why some people might find it distracting. LLOONNDDOONNNNNN I'll be there in a few weeks and can't wait!
Great Video Gary......very informative and super photos. I went last night to that area whilst visiting Manchester and captured a couple of shots nothing like yours tho 😀 did you see those Blue lit Trees near to the Imperial War Museum?
Thanks for your reply Gary and yes your videos are very inspiring. Not sure wether you can do this here but here is a link to image I took of the Blue Trees that are located just round the corner.........flic.kr/p/CF7Rwj 😀
Hi Maximo, none at all. I should of said during the video, sorry about that. The sky is dark so there was no need for ND filters and I never use Polarizers.
Hi David, now i'm no expert but if you Google The Quays or indeed look at the address of every company based there, their address is Manchester? Anyway really glad you like the video 👍👍👍
Hi, Been watching some and looking at some of your images useing flash/speedlights and on more than one occassion you have mentioned the Sekonic meter yet cannot find within your videos anything on how you actually go about it, inside or outside. More info would be helpful please. Thankyou. Russ
I tried to photograph st marys lighthouse the other night against the night sky, but the lighthouse kept blowing out so any tips of photographing something that's lit against the night sky? hopefully if i try in the blue hour it might work.
it's a difficult one. The only way is to take a couple of different exposures and blend them together in post. Another way is to expose for the brightest part of the image and try and recover detail from the rest of the image in post. Hope this helps
Hello Gary, Loved the photos. Are recces worth it? I work in Qatar and just this morning I went to an area called Katara, which is a beautiful place to photograph with old boats on the beach an wonderful statues and buildings. Best of all the sun rises over the Pearl. I'm there, on a recce, I have my tripod set up ready tp photograph the sun rise and a security man drives over on his golf cart. "Good morning sir, this is not allowed" pointing to my tripod. I asked him why and he said that he didn't know, I said best you twaddle off and find out then kiddo, because I'm not moving until you do know. He sat there watching me for five minutes and then drove off. Five minutes later he's back, this time he's got back up. I pack up and go without an answer. It's not the first time that it's happened to me here. I know that I have to be careful, and I am, I try to keep people out of my photos. So, in answer to your question, yes, recces are worth it.
Hi Martin, great comments cheers. I've been there myself. I was photographing in a street once and a security guard from the bank opposite came across and tried to stop me photographing. What an idiot, I told him to arrest me or take a hike :) Some people must think that all photographers are mass murderers or worse, it really annoys me. Qatar looks an amazing place, but I would certainly exercise a much greater degree of caution in your country. Looks an awesome place to photograph i'm jealous. You should vlog!
I can't vlog mate, I don't have the voice or the face for it. You could do it from here though. It's cheap enough to get here and I could put you up for free, we have a spare room in our villa. All I ask in payment is some of your vast knowledge. Think about it, it's an open offer.
Hi Martin, my eyebrows have just raised! Do I assume you live there or just holiday there? I'm very interested in your kind offer. If you get a mo could you possibly let me have more info. Best flight companies, time of year, is it safe etc? Could you please email me ggough@gmail.com Looking forward to your mail
lol probably because it's easier to say that than "The Blue 20 to 30 Minutes" On a serious note, the length of time depends on many factors. Take a look at this article... www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/blue-hour.html
Here’s the deal..... You show me how to capture those images next time you visit the Quays, and I will get you free parking..... I work at Media City 😉
Toward the end of the video, you shot the tower block at ISO 320, f/22. Why are you shooting at f/22? There is no real depth to the image, and the image will most likely be suffering from diffraction. You could have gone down to ISO 100, f/13, and had the same exposure.
Nick Hanson - hi Nick, you're absolutely correct. But decent lenses don't suffer too much from diffraction or softness so I'm not that bothered about trying to keep my ISO low. Decent cameras don't suffer too much from noise either so once again it wasn't a concern. Spot on with your calculations though.
Fair enough, however I would still have said that it would have been better to use the lowest native ISO of the camera, therefore getting the best quality from the sensor.
Nick Hanson - nope, it's not that important. There is no noise created on my camera at anything less than ISO 1000 so it's not that important. Don't get too et-up with taking everything at ISO 100 or less
Ad Ly - Salford Quays is an area of Salford, Greater Manchester, England, near the end of the Manchester Ship Canal. Previously the site of Manchester Docks, it became one of the first and largest urban regeneration projects in the United Kingdom following the closure of the dockyards in 1982. This is from Wikipedia. From somebody that lives nowhere near The Quays you can see why I called it Manchester Quays. It used to be known as Manchester Docks!

Nailed it again
Gary. Hull Marina for me on my next evening off for the “Blue
Hour”.
I might shoot Hull too. It'll be awesome to shoot by the sealife centre, I should imagine :)
I have had some good results there. The changing face with the new buildings lends itself to good blue hour photography.
Please share them when you've been
Sure thing.

Hi Rod, metered in camera then use the Lee AP to convert 👍🏻
Oh, Gary, please stop making these inspiring blogs, it makes me want to shot more photos. Great recce and look forward to seeing more great images. Don't stop what you are doing.

Hi Paul, do you live there? or would you travel there?
Hi Gary. I live on the west side of London and can get into the West, City or Canary Wharf very easily via the underground.
Ok Paul I'll bare your offer in mind. Cheers
Great Video Gary......very informative and super photos. I went last night to that area whilst visiting Manchester and captured a couple of shots nothing like yours tho 😀 did you see those Blue lit Trees near to the Imperial War Museum?
Hi John, glad I've inspired you. Nothing like mine? I'm surer they are! I didn't see them no. Worth another visit? Cheers John BTW 👍👍

hi John. Some great work. I didn't see those lights, I might have to go back :) Thanks for sharing 👍👍
No worries Gary.....thanks for that and i look forward to your next Vlog :)
fuventura holiday coming up two weeks time. Any suggestions for shots you know off out their?
Sorry Steve but I've never been there. Just good "Places to Photograph Fuerteventura" I just did it and it looks a pretty stunning place :)
Wow those images were amazing. Did you use any filters?
Hi Maximo, none at all. I should of said during the video, sorry about that. The sky is dark so there was no need for ND filters and I never use Polarizers.
Gary Gough wow great to know. Love your videos. You make photography fun and I love that. Keep up the good work.
Gorgeous images. Did you noticed any softness by shooting at F22? I normally don't like to use anything past F16 with the rare exception of sunstars.
These are Salford Quays and are not in Manchester :-) great vid & epic photography by the way, keep them coming ;-)
Thankyou. Russ
Hi Russ, I won't actually reveal how I use the lightmeter. It forms part of my Photography Courses. Sorry
beautiful colours - but the b/w is smokin :)
Cheers Doug 👍👍
just one question what was the focal length lens you used
I pretty much shoot all my landscapes at 24mm using my 24-105mm lens
I tried to photograph st marys lighthouse the other night against the night sky, but the lighthouse kept blowing out so any tips of photographing something that's lit against the night sky? hopefully if i try in the blue hour it might work.

Looking forward to your mail
I work here Gary. I've been here for three years now. I'll email with more info.
excellent cheers
hi Gary. what's your selfie stick weapon of choice?
you put a go pro or something else on it?
my vlogging camera is a Canon G7X MKII It sits on a Joby Ball Head - The camera is awesome but it struggles in very low light and the mic is pants.
do you know why its blue at that time
Read this you'll find it fascinating tinyurl.com/y9boa3jj
Why is it called the blue hour if it only lasts thirty minutes? ;o)
lol probably because it's easier to say that than "The Blue 20 to 30 Minutes" On a serious note, the length of time depends on many factors. Take a look at this article... www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/blue-hour.html
Here’s the deal.....
You show me how to capture those images next time you visit the Quays, and I will get you free parking..... I work at Media City 😉
Great vlog as usual and Super shots but you're taste in music is SHOCKING. LOL
Non taken Terry :)
Toward the end of the video, you shot the tower block at ISO 320, f/22. Why are you shooting at f/22? There is no real depth to the image, and the image will most likely be suffering from diffraction. You could have gone down to ISO 100, f/13, and had the same exposure.

Nick Hanson - nope, it's not that important. There is no noise created on my camera at anything less than ISO 1000 so it's not that important. Don't get too et-up with taking everything at ISO 100 or less
I do landscape workshops and am definitely not going to suggest to clients that they use ISO 1000 ;)
Unless they had to of course.
