Those pens are beautiful Rod. Your creation has honored the wood from which they were made. I’m a retired forester (45 years) and have taken up wood turning. My desire is to honor the forest and all the beautiful products our forests provide. You have been an inspiration. Thank you !
Resin makes such a big mess but is often worth it. I've never used a skew chisel for pens, going to have to try it. Rod makes it look easy. Nice work, again.
Well done Rod. Nice acrylic blanks. Excellent skew work. Great finish. 👍👍BTW your method of trimming the ends only works if the drill bore is dead on parallel to the blank sides. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Those colors! Wow! When you started to wet sand the pen it just glowed. Also, not to worry about chucking the pen. I could tell it was intentional. You were just testing it's durability. Quality assurance! 😁
This is beautiful the colours that came through the resin absolutely work with the gun metal of the pen kit. Thank you for sharing your time with us, stay safe God Bless.😘😘🙏🙏
Very nice pen. It is awesome doing those types of blanks you see one color or combination of colors then as you go it kinda changes. Keep uo the amazing work. Semper Fi! 👽
Stunning looking pen Rod. Very nice shaving off the skew which I take will be kept for future projects. Nice looking solar panel and at a reasonable price. All I would need is some sun. LOL. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Good morning, R Humphrey Woodworking. The, appears red to me, pen is a beautiful project for the 4th of July. Independence Day. Even has the word, pen, included. 🇺🇲 Appreciate your review of the solar panel. My grandson is an engineer for a large U.S. solar panel company. All the best to you. Semper Fidelis. John 15: 13
Beautiful work... Just thinking about turning a few pens myself. Newbie question: does the mandrel size have to match the pen kit tubes? Where is your favorite supply source for Pen kits and Pen turning Supplies?
Thank you, Simon! Each pen kit style requires matching bushings which fit into the tubes and provide you the proper turning dimensions to fit the pen kit hardware. So, for example, if you purchase a cigar pen kit, you'll need cigar pen bushings. More than likely, if you have a full size or midi lathe, you'll need a 2MT mandrel... but double check that in your lathe manual as it might require a 1MT. There are a host of pen kit suppliers, from Woodturningz to Penn State Industries, Craft Supplies USA, or even Amazon. Or local dealers too if you have one nearby, like Rockler. I really don't have a favorite. Hope that helps! Happy turning!!
Rod u did it again. That is a gorgeous pin. How are u and your family doing? It's been a while since I saw your show. We have had covid and haven't felt like doing nothing. But on the mend now. Love seeing you can't wait for the next one. Linda
I struggle w synthetic pen blanks getting uneven surface no matter how I turn. No issues when using wood. Not sure if it lathe speed or wobble w the mandrel or ??? Enjoyed your video
Hmmm... not sure why it's different with the materials. I turn pens at about 2k, snug the tail stock without tightening up on the mandrel, not sure what else it could be. Maybe others can add comments here as well... lots of experienced turners in this group.
Even better than i expected! Thank You!
Great to hear that, Jeff! Thanks again!

Thank you, Bonny!! I appreciate it!
You could always use the wood shavings in resin for a box to put it in or a pen stand.
Indeed, Yvonne! I'm a hoarder of shavings, lol 😊
Looks like it has red hot embers with yellow glimmers, nice contrast with the gun metal.
Thanks very much! Nice description 😊
Put dental wax on ends of tube to prevent glue from getting into tubes.

Rod - What speed to you use when drilling the center hole? Also what speed do you use on the lathe when you first start turning the blank?
Rod u did it again. That is a gorgeous pin. How are u and your family doing? It's been a while since I saw your show. We have had covid and haven't felt like doing nothing. But on the mend now. Love seeing you can't wait for the next one. Linda
Hello Linda! We are well, thank you! I'm happy to hear you're on the mend! Welcome back, my friend.
Nice
Thanks Luie!
Gorgeous pen! What is the weirdest material that you made a pen out of?
Thank you! Hmmm... Either the coffee beans or shredded money in resin.. both a little weird I suppose, lol 😊

Looks great. Is Edgar a Manx or just got it’s tail caught in the wrong thing?
Yes, a crazy Manx! He's my constant companion. Thank you!
