  • This one was not so easy. Maybe I choose the wrong season. The NEBDR (North East Backcountry Discovery Route). In an effort to find more 4 Wheel Camping & Overlanding trails in the NE US, I came across the NEBDR. This is One of Thirteen BDR routes across the US. They were created by a group of Adventure Motorcyclist through a Non-Profit organization called Backroad Discovery Routes (RideBDR.com) Ride. This 8 section 1300 mile in the NE US is On Road and Off Road. The question is how much of this could be safely completed in a Small/Medium sized 4x4? Well after now completing Section 1 & Section 2 and I am ready to continue on to Section 3 from Copake Falls, NY to Readsboro, VT. Join me as I continue on this journey.

    Excellent series. Watched all parts without any boredom. You provided education, awesome cinematography and Scout. Short and engaging scenes. Only disadvantage goes to the next one I might be watching if not as good as your presentation. Bravo. Glad you did this one and thank you.

    Hi John, great series. Thanks for documenting your overland travels in the northeast. As a fellow jeep overlander based in lower NY state, I know the struggle of finding dispersed camping around here. Subbed and will check out your other videos! Jim

    Wow great discovery! I have been looking for overlanding routes and this one starts right outside of where I live “Binghamton NY”. Thanks for posting this. If interested I would highly recommend Bald Eagle State Forest for great overlanding and Jeep camping.

      @everythingoutdoorsandjeeps Thanks for watching and subscribing. These trails are a lot of fun and honestly not that difficult. Truly makes for a great adventure as the Spring Leaves and green grass start to bloom. Appreciate you also sharing the Bald Eagle State Forest recommendation. I see this is also not to far from one of my PA favorites at Boulder Field State Park. TY, I am always looking for a new discovery. Enjoy the ride. JK

    Another great video, John! As frustrating as those gates were, clearing the tree was good of you. Will you explore more in the closed-off area after the season "begins"? Thanks for bringing us along. I look forward to further adventures!

      Thanks Ken. Appreciate you watching. I fully expect to head back in May as many people have recommended with the state trail gates closed until May 1. I hope to share some other trips, that I unfortunately don’t have planned yet. More to explore. 😎

    The closed gates are plentiful this time of year. But hey, at least you got out and enjoyed some beautiful country.
    Enjoyed the watch, as usual.

    I've tried commenting to your other vids on NEBDR but they're not taking for some reason. Anyway, very sorry you had this happen. This is my backyard. We do NEBDR 3 in its entirety ever summer or fall (fall foliage if time right) and do portions of Segment 3 all year long. Just did one 2 weeks ago.
    Yes bottom line you picked wrong time of year for the MA portion which is the majority of Segment 3. It's really May 1 to start the OHV "season" in MA. All the lower access gates (eg past the Monterey bridge which is where your second attempt to enter is filmed) are closed at Beartown and many are closed on October mountain which are the main offroad portions of NEBDR 3 til you get north near the VT border. Greylock is also likely to be socked in robbing a crazy view that let's you see clear to Boston.
    In the VT portion theyre non maintained "Class IV" state roads and generally open unless severe safety issues arise (like mudslides last year) but even then most are only "officially" closed you can drive them if your rig is capable. But in MA they're mostly actively maintained state or municipal roads and when they're closed their actually gated unless you're "that" dude and go around.
    Dispersed camping (even paid primitive Hip or Dyrt app camps) are almost non existent in the MA portion as well. As a result many doing NEBDR 3 will stay at Bascoms lodge to rest on the MA portion. Its not camping but it's the old Civilian Conservation Corps facility atop Greylock so is still a cool experience. Though it too can have spotty availability before May and after October.
    The bottom line is that far southern New England (ie CT, MA and RI) suck for overlanding. Things are night and day once you hit sthrn VT and NH. Then as you go north, forget it. Central VT east of the Green Mountains and NH and ME rival western PA western NC, even CO in terms of trail availability and primitive camping. Southern VT in the Green Mountains also has excellent primitive camping but it's relatively high traffic for AT and Long Trail through hikers as well as overlanders and van life type quasi hippies. So finding a spot can be challenge some times.
    Feel free to DM me.

      @oldgrunt5569 Thanks for the message! Well you said it best, the wrong time of year for sure. I would not have traded the experience and look forward to returning when it is all open and green. You have some beautiful trails and roads in your backyard. I am now sitting back and waiting for the gates to open to retrace my section 3 steps.
      Appreciate the offer to DM. I hope to plan a trip with some new RUclipsr friends that have also shared messages. You can also email me at JohnKing@stormkingexpedition.
      Cheers to Spring!

      @@StormKingExpedition Do come back. And let me know in advance. I'll email you some hidden spots both for trails and eats that don't require varying too much from the official NEBDR GPS tracks. I watched your Copake segment vid and didn't notice you stopping at Dad's diner. If that's right it's a must do way to kick off the Segment 3 trip. Brkst at dad's, short drive to Bash Bish to walk it off then saddle back up.

      @@StormKingExpedition we cook on the trail too typically (tailgate kitchen set up) when we do segment 4 or anywhere else but Segment 3 is typically a day trip given how close it is.

    WAAAAY too early in the season to do that route, unfortunately. Much of section 4 won't open until May 1st. As of the day I'm writing this (Friday, March 22, 2024) central VT is looking at between 10 and 24" of new snow this coming weekend.

    • @StormKingExpedition
      @StormKingExpedition  4 месяца назад +1

      @W2IRT I hear ya! Ugh! On the snow. I fully expected closures in the winter, but was a little surprised of so many with gates. In NY they would occasionally have a sign, but no gates. I still got in my little adventure. I cannot wait until May! Thanks for watching and hope to maybe see you out on the trails.

    Thumb down for promoting a motorcycle route to 4 wheelers. These routes are created by motorcyclists 4 motorcyclists

    • @StormKingExpedition
      @StormKingExpedition  4 месяца назад +1

      @pl5861 I as a fellow 2 wheeler understand your thoughts, but the fact is that 99.9% of the route is public roads designed for both 2 as well as 4 wheels. When you live in the NE US, you have slim pickings to begin with, it’s nice to know we have something. This route was more 4 wheels before it became a BDR and many of the communities that are along this route desperately can use some additional tourism. I am simply promoting the opportunity to explore.

      As a cyclist I fucking hate 4 and 2 wheel assholes that destroy these ancient ways. Especially the class 4 stuff in VT. The erosion and carnage you selfish fuckheads create is jaw dropping. I can’t wait till VT starts gating class 4 roads. There, I said it.
