Ski Resorts That Went Abandoned

- There's over one hundred abandoned ski resorts in just the state of Colorado. From financial struggles, to changing climates, to even fatal accidents, these are some of the most well-known ski resorts that went abandoned.
it's absolutely INSANE how expensive lift tickets are in the US. I'm in Europe and the Alps are MUCH cheaper to ski. big time.
Correct, I moved and live between winter park & summit county resorts, don't even ski or go to town much, traffic, everything prices food is ridiculous. Only place I'll ride is free Loveland Pass, hitch hike rides up or we shuttle cars.
I ski free at the area I work, but I will soon leave the ski biz and then I will ski at small and still affordable non destination resorts. I don’t require the glitz, aggravation or steep prices of the big boy resorts that now charge for parking. I think their is some push back as business is down in Utah. Too bad? No that’s good. Fug ‘em.
You say this as if it’s a newfound discovery. Pretty much anyone that skis is aware of the Euro vs US price difference.
its funny that you always forget the difference of income, you cant compare US with EU. For example north italy, if a pass costs 60-80 its extremly overpriced.

A month before berthoud lodge was demolished I went into it. Could only access it from the second floor as the first was completely covered in snow. What a fascinating and creepy exploration. You could tell people were camping on the second floor in the offices, even building small camp fires in rooms for warmth (which seemed absurd). The first floor was jet black dark from windows being covered but it was in surprisingly good condition. Kitchen still had cookware on stoves. The ski rental area was littered with old receipts all over the floor.
Rumor was the ski area was haunted and cursed, and I don’t know if that’s true, but the way that lodge creaked and moaned while walking around in it was reasonably unsettling. I’m so glad I did it though. Saw a true piece of Colorado history before it was gone forever.
Great video man wishing you the best with the channel!
Basically, vail and Epic have an ogliopoly in colorado and they hike those prices up a fuck ton. Your only bet is to live in colorado and get the season pass. Gone are the days where you can visit multiple resorts unless you are willing to drop over $1000 for a all resort season pass
Ikon??
@@KillUhG99 lol yea I meant epic and ikon
Ski Rio, Stoner, Pikes Peak, Conquistador, Broad-more, Sugarite, Powder Puff are some others. Most I named are in Colorado some are in New Mexico. And believe it or not there are literally dozens more that closed. Many if not most were small town operated areas.
It's not berthoued!
Brrrthud
Yeah, I am from Loveland so hearing him say that over and over was driving me crazy.
Berthowwwwwwd
Glad someone pointed this out, I live other winter park side of.
I swear after watching 2 of ur vids I thought u had at least 10,000+ subs food job and keep grinding
I'm always amazed nobody has managed to bring back Stagecoach, up near Steamboat. It looks like an amazing mountain and there's so much traffic through the Boat these days.
Although I agree, Stagecoach is still a decent drive from Steamboat. Traffic doesn’t go back there.
Is that the one on the way up to Strawberry?
@@maxpower9499 nah, it’s the other direction. Off of Route 14 near Stagecoach Reservoir. You can see the trail cuts from the reservoir; it looks like a pretty cool mountain.
No mention of Stagecoach, probably the largest lost ski area in the United States and is just south of Steamboat.
It's pronounced ber-thud not ber-thowed. I wish there was a future for Geneva. Cuchara doesn't get enough snow. It's not going to work. Colorado needs any new areas to be at or W of the Continental Divide because of snowpack issues.
I feel like smaller french ski areas here in Europe, like Gerardmer, Lac Blanc, Schnepfenried etc. which are at very low altitude and only like a few weeks where all runs are open, will disappear in probably less than 10 years
I got to learn how to ski at Cuchara when I was a little kid!!
Talking about Colorado but showing Bansko, Bulgaria at 2:58
I was about to say the same thing.
Great video luckly were I live in CO we have a few ski mountains
The thumbnail is leysin in switzerland (where i go to school) it is still fully operational and not having great snow rn.
yeah there are false videos in this video. at @3:00 u can see Bansko, Bulgaria
Using leysin as a thumbnail is wild…
I came here often in the early 2000s. I remember that part of the slope was almost always like this
Cuchara is very close. I was hoping to ski it this year but they didn't open
maybe next year. Been skiing a lot of monarch and then went to breck and keystone a few times
videos are actually insane and nothing like what we have in the ski niche. Stick with this and you'll have one mill in less than two years
577th sub great video very underrated
Skiing is NO longer a working guy's winter sport. Alta was JUST $7.00. At Jackson Hole the all area ski lift tickets were JUST $10.00. Colorado skiers, would you like Berthard Ski Area open up again with all area ski lift tickets between $50.00 to $100.00 versus paying $300.00 for a all area ski lift ticket at Vail but having slow riding fixed grip chairlifts at Berthard Pass Ski Area? I think the price at Vail and other resorts like this increase their prices because of insurance running the resort and installing high speed lifts.
I'm responding to myself. I hate this change over that RUclips did. Like the saying goes, "if it works don't fix it". All I wanted to do was to do a edit and add that my friend and I went on a ski trip to Alta and Jackson Hole from Michigan. I tried over and over just to insert that statement and couldn't do it.
FYI: Local's pronounce Berthoud "berth - id"
Sorry, but the first chair lift in the US was in Sun Valley - a year before Berthold came up with their rope tow.
Snow makers, not snow machines. Snow machines are what snowmobiles are called in Canada and Alaska. Do you even participate in winter sports??
My investigations have shown there is not a ski area in colorado that profits from lift tickets. All the side business and real estate are where the profit comes from.
if thisnt stolen, this is the mosst underated channel yet.
Appreciate it! Not stolen, I’ve been making videos on other channels for years though haha
@@UncoveringSkiing Cool! how big have your other channels gotten? i really enjoyed the video you made here.
Thanks! My main channel is called "uncovering" @@flairrahahaa
What Ski Lift and Ski Resort is on the thumbnail?
Berthod Pass was on National Forest Service land, not the National Park Service land.
Ski lift ticket prices have eliminated blue collar America altogether. Geeeeeez, and why do resorts fail? Only rich snots left on the mountain, as well as the few resort workers who can ski (mostly) for free.
If you don't have more competition, then the exorbitant prices will continue. It is too expensive for the common person to afford. If you open up more ski parks, prices should come down.
the thumbnail is leysin in switzerland and is still opperational and busy
I do hear many more American accents when skiing in Germany, Austria, and Italy. "Awesome", there's a lot "Awesome"
Birth-owed? Seriously?
That’s how you pronounce it
Birth-owwd
wait is this part 2 of that one video from like 3 years ago or smth
Why this picure from leysin switzerland?
Go Cuchara!
Can't get over BerTHOUD, instead of BerthED pass.
Dam this guy does vocal fry.
Bro the send at 1:35 💀
Guy killed his knees and back hahah
st. marys being sold for 7 million rn
Berthoud was not the first place to install a chair. It was invented at Sun Valley.
Incorrect, Europe.
It is pronounced "Birth Ud" pass, or "Birth Ed"
That’s not how you pronounce beethoud or why winter park succeeded while berthoud 0:01 failed.
Did some hick from Missouri with access to Wikipedia write this?
Berth oooooud
Cuchara❓❓ That's Spanish for spoon❗😺🥄
Lol berthowwd
I was horrified of the quality and the condition of the most of the lifts in the us. Some ex socialist countries, like Slovakia has better equipments. Not to mention that it’s 2-3x more expensive than in Switzerland. Also I had to bring my own gear, because I couldn’t rent a proper board in whole Park City…
