    Beautiful 66. I have a 7 Litre convertible, I love the body style and ride. They will never make cars like this again.

    Absolutely a beautiful and powerful '66 500. You stated you once owned this car, only way it wouldn't still be mine is if it was replaced with a comparable '67 that'd never be let go off.

      It's tough to let them go and I've been lucky to have had some amazing cars but I'm not a rich man and I cannot afford to keep and collect them so they go to guys who can. I just wish some of the cars I've done guy would actually drive and enjoy them instead of becoming dust collectors...lol. Thanks for watching!!

    My first car was a 66 Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop like this one. I resto modded it around 1977 and installed a 351C I got from a 70 Mach 1, added a bigger cam, 4:10 gears, black 5 spoke rims from a 78 Camaro with their trim rings using adapters, and red Ford center caps that I harvested from some hub caps. It was painted vintage burgundy and had a red interior. Visually it looked a lot like Leno's 7 Litre Galaxie. Took that car everywhere and prior to the 4:10's used to strap a boat to the roof and take it to the lake camping driving down long gravel roads. Sold it to my brother around 1982 and he eventually wore it out and sold it. I'm sure it had at least 175,000 miles on it. One of my favorite Cars I have ever owned to this day. I now have a driver quality 7 Litre Convertible that is mechanically very good but needs paint and body work. It is also vintage burgundy with a black interior. Love the look of these cars and in the day the ride quality was second to none.
    Oh and if I owned the one in this video I would drive it regularly, just not down gravel roads!

      Yours had to be a 428, because the 427 (R) was only available in 4 spd. manual.
      66' 7 Litre was pretty much top of the line, Galaxie 500 is not, as evidenced by this video. Ford only built between 38-44 7 Litre 427's.

      I agree and if you asked Adrian Clements he would likely have tracked it down to an X garage executive engine swap. That would be a beast! I have heard numbers in the 525 hp and 488 ft lbs with stock 2x4 427s. The 65-67s were mostly Side Oilers and MR 2.19/1.73 valves. If Bud Moore or Holman - Moody did the engine , Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe did some experimental 427s that could go back to to Dearborn and run on the dynos setup to run shift to shift of LeMans for up to 40-50 hours plus up and down engine braking. 485 hp at 6000 rpm’s and 485 ft lbs of torque all day and night on the dyno. But some of those executives swaps were 550-625 hp engines in full size cars and later intermediates , 13 of which are unaccounted for. The FE quoting HFII that told the Countess( his wife) that “his engine is the greatest engine ever made and will ever be made “. She said that he must beat Ferrari before he can make that claim. And by God, he did. I have loved the FE engine family in any application. The design is so far ahead of its time. I t is just now getting the praise that it deserves. The suits at Ford did their level best to keep the power down and make it fit the GM model of hydraulic cammed “ go with the flow “ engines that were just enough to do well on the street. The character of the FE and it’s potential was way too tame, with the fear of turning 500 hp cars in significant numbers to live up to their potential was denied to the street racers, while Mopar was cranking out 426 Hemis, 440 wedges and GM all with 396 427-454 made for the intermediate cars. Ford, you had to build your own. And man I saw 452 ci High Risers that just mopped the floor with all of them. Simple cars, not exotics. I always wondered why Iacocca built the first First Pony and Intermediates to only take the 289 maximum. The FE on a diet was not much heavier than a 283 Chevy. If there were a will there was a way. By 66-67 the competition had a leg up with the hearts and minds of a key market segment. The 410 Merc in the 67 Mustang/ Fairlane/ Comets with some solid cam from off the shelf, cast all of the blocks as side oiler 2 nd gen blocks capable of 4.13-4.18 bores with the squared bore cores. 3 rib main webbing like the 428s and later the 360-390 pickup blocks, good grief, where were their heads? These blocks with the 3.98 stroke and 4.16 bores would have been 433 ci and heads could have kept up with anything out there with a good cam the side oilers oil supply for 7000 rpm running. The suits sabotaged the era with so much potential and with little more than what they already had. Stupid. The light quick revving FE was defanged by a bunch of nervous Nellie’s.

      '65,'66,'67..IMHO, the '65 and '67 were best..'66 was more of a hybrid of the two other years in styling cues, not quite as good,IMHO..don't get me wrong, I like the '66, in fact I have a '66....

    I knew it would both start & run, being what it is, especially the vintage of it! For the drivetrain, that’s the best one Ford ever had! Thanks for keeping it original! Especially Amen to the 427 cubic inch engine-( with the dual 4 barrel carburetors being the “Automotive Icing on the Cake!”) along with the manual 4 speed tranny, instead of an automatic! The automatics are good, but my personal preference is t 4 speed manual shifting standard transmissions! Definitely a “Keeper Car!”

    G’day Dave,
    That is one nasty looking & sounding 66.
    Ford was always ahead in the body, the lines & looks no Mopar or GM comes close, just gorgeous from any angle.
    Love to see the interior, centre console or bench buckets.
    I thoroughly enjoyed your cool carm demeanour on how you go about your work.
    Also enjoy a spotless workshop & workshop floor.
    Cheers

    I had black 66 Galaxie 2 dr HT with a 390 I built my self in the 9th grade and used the same R code cam in a 390 at .030 over (396 ci) and the on C6AER with 2.09, 1.6 valves and a dual plane MR intake and a Chevy 3310 750 with the choke horn milled off. The power valve was a 55 and I can’t remember the jets, but it had a nasty idle, 2.5 pipes and headers with
    1.75 primary and 3 inch collectors and 18inch 3 inch extension. It came to 24 inch at 3 inch and the 2.5s had the straight through Thrush Clay Smith Woodpecker chomping on a cigar on each that bolted to the extensions 3 inch in and 2.5 through and out with the pipes out in front of the rear tires, because of the 3 link with panhard made it hard for 2.5 pipe to get through there. Those Thrush’s had a bad ass boom to them, the 396 FE sounded like a 426 wedge Dodge Ramcharger with that cackle and big boy boom. Couldn’t get many people to race me. I beat a 440-6 bbl that was stock, in a Road Runner and I walked him. People tried to make excuses since mine was a top loader 4 speed, and his was the 833 4 speed but it was a fair fight. His ran out of steam at 5400, and mine could pull 7000 clean. The difference between a solid and a hydraulic. And that 3310 and the porting I did was really like a screaming small block against a fairly tame 44O that ran good. My Galaxie wasn’t nearly as heavy as people thought. It was a bench seat plain Jane car and the 3 link and panhard really hooked up compared to a 440. I really wish I still had it I’d have a 428 running on E85 in it with the 2x4 PI intake. My 65 Galaxie is even lighter. I d love to build a 410 with a T6,S475 turbo blowing through an 850, and 5 inch through the hood

    • @mydirtygarage
      @mydirtygarage  3 месяца назад

      Runs crisp and clean. If carbs are set up correctly they will only flow as much fuel as the engine calls for. That's the beauty of the design. If they aren't then they run like crap

    Hey Dave,, where did you pull your tach signal from?

  • @afwoods
    @afwoods 4 месяца назад +1

    Got an issue with my 63 R code and you might be just the guy who knows what's it needs. It doesn't like to start when hot. Will start in hot weather and I can drive it short distances but if I drive very far and stop and try and start it it wont start. Needs at least an hour to cool down before it will start again. I thought it was the starter cable routed near the headers but fixing that didn't solve it and I'm not sure what to try next.

    • @mydirtygarage
      @mydirtygarage  4 месяца назад +3

      If it cranks fast then it's vapor lock, if it cranks slow then it could be a weak starter. The cast iron headers and the heat from them will really kill a starter on the edge of going bad. Look me up on Facebook (Dave Walters) if your on there and shoot me a message if you need help. My icon has my beige 1968 Mustang on it.

    • @afwoods

      @@mydirtygarage What would you suggest as a replacement starter?

    • @dickdaley9059
      @dickdaley9059 4 месяца назад

      Heat transfer from intake to carb base may be boiling the fuel in the bowls when hot. Cool off time will indicate this is the problem if it starts without an issue. Try isolating the carb base from the manifold heat with a riser.

    ..not a Ford expert here..so..what is the difference that made one cubic inch difference in displacement between a 427 and a 428?..they are both FE engines, right?...and why does everyone seem to prefer the 427?..seems like there wouldn't be much difference in them....

    • @mydirtygarage
      @mydirtygarage  3 месяца назад

      The biggest difference is that the 427 engines had crossbolted main caps like modern Coyote, Godzilla and LS engines which made them much stronger than the regular 2 bolt main blocks like the 428. There were other differences like cylinder heads and camshafts but that's the biggest

    Meticulous attention to detail to get any car running. Imagine why people without your tuning skills try to get a complex engine running. I had a budget rebuild done on a 1976 460 Ranchero & it was a nightmare getting the thing running smoothly.
