Howard and Mark were both in the band The Turtles who made the song Happy Together.
And bassist Jim Pons as well. Basically, half of The Turtles wound up in The Mothers Of Invention. That's part of the joke about not getting laid until they sing their Big Hit Record On The Charts With A Bullet, which is why they sing Happy Together.
It was Jim Pons who had the deep sounding voice and he was also the bass player for the Turtles so that makes three members of the Turtles in Franks band !
Yay!!! Thanks for doing these cuts!
a “bullet” was when a new record went on the charts and if it had a bullet it was expected to be a hit.
The guys who are playing with Frank are Mark Volman and Howie Kaylan who WERE the Turtles…. They were as crazy as Frank, if you can believe it. These were skits on stage, same line up as on the Billy the Mountain album.
We wore this record OUT when I was in High School. (swear words!!) We were 15. The homo-erotic aspect was also very unheard of in the 1970’s.
Took me decades to truly appreciate this album. I love it now. It's so puerile.
"Happy Together" is a semi-cover, i.e. it's a cover for Frank, not a cover for Mark & Howie & Jim, as they were in The Turtles.
That Happy Together chorus was incredible 💕🎶
Frank was totally crazy and oh so entertaining! Of course quite vulgar too!😅
There is so much more, Lee, I mean, I m already listening for 50 years now and I m still not bored , to say the least !
Oh I know brother… so much more. I can’t even begin to comprehend how much he did. A lot of it is unreleased too!

Hey Lee,
I might be able to give you some perspective on that.
In the mid-1990's I presented a friend of mine with my giant silk poster (4x4 ft.) of the cover of Absolutely Free.
This was to celebrate the completion of his collection of Frank's entire catalog of music up to that point, which covered the entire wall of one room in his house.
Also of note: Frank said in an interview in the 1980's that he had written enough music at that point, that he could stop writing and just record what he had already written for the rest of his life.
The Flo and Eddie era, that would be Howard and Mark who were the lead singers in The Turtles.
Hilarious lol frank is the funniest fuckin dude I swear. I bet he hired them just for this. 😂😂😂🥹
@@L33Reacts they were with him for a year or two. They got screwed by their record company and if they performed as the Turtles the record company took most of the earnings. That's why the changed their names to Flo and Eddie, the sung on a bunch of commercial jingles and did back-up work for other artists, check out the song Hungry Heart by Bruce Springsteen. I saw them at Summer fest in Milwaukee in the late 70's.
@@chitownlee They also sang backup on the Psychedelic Furs' _Forever Now_ . Expert vocalists-probably the best Frank ever had barring Ray Collins and several of the classical musicians he hired. Phyllis Bryn-Julson, who sang the soprano solos on the _200 Motels_ soundtrack, had a long career as a soloist and a vocal teacher; in fact, I've read at least one article about Zappa that talks about him attending one of her recitals many years later. I know that if you watch her in the movie, she is *nailing* those difficult atonal lines with the insane jumps in "Little Green Scratchy Sweaters," likely with almost no rehearsal (she's reading from the score as she goes). I can believe that Zappa kept up with her.
DUDE, do yourself a favor and listen to this ENTIRE album from beginning to end because it's a little out of context listening to THIS song alone but you will enjoy it!!!
I've been a fan of this album for almost 40 years now!! I was introduced to this album around 1977 by a friend of mine that was a few years older and a HUGE Zappa fan!!!❤
What a song for your little sweetie to walk in on! This was about as explicit as any record out at the time. I loved it as a highschool senior, and played the silly thing for anyone who would listen.
Okay. That made me laugh out loud. Kids! 🙃
Gee, I wish they wouldn't hold back and would just say what they mean! LOL😂
right? i wish they would just go for it and say what they mean! xD
These two songs were part of a longer suite starting with Little House I used To Live In.
Apparently, the premise of Do You Like My New Car happened to Howard for real when he was in The Turtles.
For legal reasones Mark Volman and Hoaard Kaylan couldn't use their real names on album covers after The Turtles so they beccame The phlorescent leech and Eddie, Flo and Eddie for short.
Still with The Turtles, Howard grew a Zappaesque moustache and goatee.
Flo and Eddie
One of them was called the fluorescent leech.... Was that Volman or Howard's name?
Some record exec, wanted to sing Frank, told him he would make him bigger than the turtles. Frank said no. Years later Flo and Eddie from the turtles career nosed dives. Frank takes them on tour and makes fun of them right here. Now that's my take.
I will forever regret not seeing Zappa live. I had my chances and figured I had time. If there’s one thing you cant say about Zappa live is that he was boring.
Good one!
Cracked me up
yeah that was hilarious lol frank was the funniest dude. the turtles cover was great too.
I used to have this on vinyl - may have to get it on CD.
I still do!
I bought it in 1972 on vinyl. Still have it. Picked it up in the 1980s-90s on CD.
There's a box set that came out 2 years ago called "The Mothers 1971" that has the full unedited tapes of this concert plus John Lennon and Yoko performing a couple tunes with them.
@@guitarheroplayer-fs5js Thanks, I'll look into that.
I'll have what he's having...
Listen to the whole LP -- it's epic juvenilia mocking juveniles by being the very thing mocked.
One outgrows it in relatively short order.
"The Turtles" -- Kaylan and the other -- apparently started with "The Mothers of Invention" (the original name of the band), so their stint as "The Turtles" was apparently a commercially-successful "joke".
There's an arrogance in much of it.
It helps if you've seen the footage of them doing it e.g in The True Story Of 200 Motels - Mark and Howard flirting and groping each other
Wait! Is that currents from Tame Impala in the background?
Let it Happen, 2015 in a nutshell.
No wonder the Feminist Movement sprung not long after this.. sounds like you've respect for your daughters, l hope. Sexism was awful in the wrong crowd...stayed away.
