Hey Bob this is the review that got me into knives, literally make me discover that I love knives, 5 years ago. The ideia of having a blade designed primarly for self defense, a blade professedly tactical rather than just an innocent non-threating tool simple blowed my mind at the time in a good way. I discovered knives are as cool as guns. It's uber cool to be part of this community of people who has this mindset of being prepared to whatever situation. This review is now a classic! Thank you!
I am honored to have been instrumental in your introduction to knives. It is a hobby you can appreciate for life. The people in the knife community are among the most down to earth you will find. Thanks for your post and keep it sharp. :)
Thank you knivestown for another informative video. I appreciate your non biased approach. I am looking forward to getting my own mark I for valentines day. As always your videos provide the most pertinent information in regards to quality and use and your site offers the best deals around. Cheers.
AUS-8 is a good steel and in fact was once the "premium" steel on the block, but that has been a long time now. It has good toughness and edge retention which is a hard combination to get just right. If heat treated properly, AUS-8 can serve admirably. Think of it as holding the middle ground between 440C and ATS-34.
I own a MOD CQDII auto and a Hornet model, so as you know the blade coating was not impervious to scratches and wear. Both knives show their use on the blade coating and yes I recognize the blackhawk will scratch as well, so they are comparable in that regard. The Blackhawk is not the knife you uncharitably describe. No, it is not the knife the MOD was, but for the price it is sill a good knife. Yes, I also wish an original or "classic" option was available featuring the old construction.
@omiss2006 This knife is not an auto. If you are looking for this knife with manual deployment, then this is exactly the knife. That button on the side is deceiving, it makes it look like an auto, but it is really just the button lock. There is no spring deployment in this knife. I believe it can be had that way, but the one in the vid is not auto.
A fair question. What I meant is the knife is still put together well and is solid. The handle doesn't have to be made of T6 aluminum to be quality. Yes, the original was made with better materials, T6, 154CM, I have one of my own. But I was worried Blackhawk might ruin it, leaving it unrecognizable. Not so. this knife is exactly the same in dimensions and design and spirit and the price makes it accessible to a much wider audience. It is still a solid performer despite the materials. Not sad.
Water resistant...? Well, it's not a watch, but if you are asking about corrosion it is a stainless steel which will resist rust and the blade is also coated for further protection. You should not hesitate to use this knife in water or moist environment, it is tough. I would say to dry after use though which is the standard basic care for any knife of any steel (maybe with the excpetion of H1 steel or a cermic knife). Drying the knife after use is just basic maintenance.
@god604 I never did a review of the original Mark 1, but the differences are the handle being Nylon over steel liners as opposed to T6 aluminum and the blade is not 154CM anymore but is AUS8. Besides that I dont think there are any differences. It is a solid choice for a tactical.
I love Blackhawk. I use their gear all the time. The only problem I have with the CQD is the price. In the field it is so easy to lose a good knife. I prefer to use a little cheaper knife and give it a good edge. I really do like the CQD though.
A number of differences between the original and this new version. The original comes with the pocket clip screws in the knife handle on the opposite side of where the clip is situated. Where in this version, the screws are only in the side that houses the pocket clip. The original does not need the liners as the actual body of the handles of the MOD Mk 1 act as liners. In the original the back strap has lightening recesses (slots) machined into the back strap. Minor differences to the seatbelt cutter as well. Nothing to write home about. Overall, an incredible knife. (Especially the original!)
@wwwknivestowncom Have you done a review on the original MARK I knife? I need to understand the difference between the MARK I and the MARK I type E, planning to buy a blackhawk knife soon and need some feedback.
I break this thing into pieces with my Mark V from MOD. I can cut or break tile with it while not even harming the edge of the blade. American made for the win.
Blackhawk bought Masters of Defense because the contracts with the military they had and the great designs they gathered under one roof. This design was standard issue for EVERY Special Operations unit. And Blackhawk turned the perfect tactical folder into some cheap crap. Nothing against that, there should be merchandise for all pockets, but they should of kept the original in production as well. For people that want to buy a folder every 20 years as opposed to every other mission.
@wwwknivestowncom 440C is superior to AUS8 Just look at a chemical charts for steels : it has everyhting AUS8 has, in higher proportions , plus some extra stuff
Seat belt cutter is shit. Nice looking knife payed alot of money for 2 of these 1 normal and relieved a automatic, I think by mistake. No problems with that . But what steel are these made of , to late to send back ? But don't want to send back need to know the steel this knife is made of for my djarpening requirements. Please advise..
PVD coating similar to DLC coating? Really? Wow. You might know about knives, but you don't know ANYTHING about this particular one. There are so many differences in the handle alone between this crap and the original Masters of Defense, it's not even funny. They might look the same, yes. But looks is all they have in common. I have all three models: original Mark I auto, original Mark I manual & Mark I type E (for "economical" I guess) by Blackhawk.

Actually yes, it can be had in aluminum. Also available at Knives Town.
yes, where when how....Aluminum?? where do you get replaceable seatbelt cutter blades?
awesome video review. really appreciate it. great job with the close ups, not too blurry.

I really do like the CQD though.
I'm in love with this Knife
I think this is one of the saddest stories in knife manufacturing I know about.
Този нож е хубав но не е оригинала а бледо копие на него Аз също съжалявам че не можах да си купя оригинала които вече не се произвежда вече
I like it.
but why blackhawk CQD Mk1 type E not automatic

quick question... which do you prefer the plain edge or the partially serrated like the one shown.

@shihulud1982 so would you say that the Mark I would be a better choice?

@wwwknivestowncom

All thing I got to say is, MOD is my favorite tactical knife company, and it is already dead.
