MSGT Thanks Brother. What a refreshing comment. I did my A school in the Navy at Lackland SA for culinary school combined with the Air Force. Loved my quick time there. I was there the day of 9/11.
Thanks for doing this! I've yet to put my Razor 4 burner together, but have already bought and received many spatulas as gifts, as well as other accessories. I use Dexter knives for my bbq stuff, so I may order one of their spatulas also. I've been cooking all of my adult life, but have never used a griddle. Love my grills/smokers, and love my cast iron and stainless cookware in the house....the griddle is the next to conquer! Thanks as always FTK, love your videos!
Many thanks for taking the time to explain all this. Before your video I had figured the biggest and strongest (and likely most expensive) was the way to go. Very helpful guidance indeed
I am new to the Blackstone griddle so all of your advice is very welcoming. I've watch a ton of videos an have to say that I prefer yours the best. I just ordered 2 of the New Star spatulas because of the awkwardness of the bulky Blackstone ones. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
Good video Neil ! Back in the late 50's early 60's when I was a bad boy my grandmother used to get the spatula out that's what I would get hit on the ass with , being from a foreign country she always called it the pancake Turner,,,,ps quite a few of your video's remind me of my youth !! Love what you guys put out. THANK you Frank from montana..........
Hahaha. I have a similar experience. My dad got me one time with a wooden paddle. Till this day he regret’s it. Says is was way to ruff. I aways now you say it. Hell i could have told you that.
Very informative episode Brotha!! I have the small blackstone spatula set. Im definitely going to look into your Gold Standard one or possibly the dexter one. Cheers y’all
I like the spatulas with holes for spreading out oil when first applied. The holes spread it very well. Mine are the same but one with holes and one without. Thanks for the info!
The best Spatula is the one that's best to you. I have the Large Blackstone Spatula it's perfect for flipping 5 oz smashburgers. I have one with sides for scooping up messy items rather than trying to use two regular spatula's There is on one best for everyone. My first were from Lowe's and I still use that set.
Great info .I just got blackstone griddle, Thanks for all the great information. I also have pitboss 700 and a bradley smoker, guess you can't have to many. Lol
For sure, the comfortability is the main thing for me and the size is important because of what I'm cooking. If I need to flip or fold something like an omelette, then I may want a longer or wider spatula. Ultimately, it's all a matter of preference and it's all trial and error. I like my Blackstone spatula with a chopper or dough cutter. Happy GRIDDLING and thanks for the video.
A hibachi cook once told me The Dexter spatula is well balanced for doing cooking tricks. Spinning off the finger tips kinda tricks. Great video!! 👍 I'm here cause I'm looking to buy my spatula for my blackstone. Thanks
FWIW, my go to spatula is the mercer culinary hell's handle. Very high quality stuff. They also make a heavy duty 6x5 version which IMHO is the perfect spatula for smash burgers. Thanks for the video!
I’m new to the home griddle world but in my younger yrs I’ve cooked on plenty of grills as a prep cook. Your videos are so great and informative, luckily I’ve just purchased my utensils and they have the stops you’re talking about. I’ll find out just how good they are tomorrow10/24/22 when they arrive
I am new to the flat-top community and so excited to learn more from you! This may have already been commented about, since I am watching this over a year since posting, but those Blackstone spatulas and the other heavier options you showed would be useful for people with disabilities or medical conditions. I randomly twitch in my arms and hands so weighted utensils and other kitchen supplies help counteract the shaking with their weight so I can almost work as if I did not have any twitching. I have had a significant reduction in the amount of food that has been flung across my kitchen since getting weighted utensils and such!
Was walking at a Kroger and say the same core spatula. Picked it up for my pit boss. I also have the Blackstone non metal spatula I like them a lot to for the pit boss
That's some good info Neil. I have the wooden handled spatulas. I leave them on the griddle top frequently and and for periods of time. They have never gotten too hot on the exposed medal between the handle or the rivets. I suppose if left long enough that heat will eventually transfer, but again, it's never been an issue with mine. When I ordered them I never thought about the squared off blades with the sharp corners. After a couple uses, I did filed them round at the corners to prevent gouging the flat top. Another thing with the wood handles, I mineral oil them just like you do your wood cutting boards. Don't want them to dry out and crack. So why bother with wood? I like the natural look and feel. Thanks for another informative video.
Thats a great tip. I oil my wooden spoon as well. Funny about the heat. The one i have will flat out burn ya if not carfeull. I threw it away yesterday but i kept it just for this video. Would be cool to have a hand carved spatula from someone. I think it would be neat as hell.
1st time viewer! I sub'd!! I'll have to try your recommended metal spatula, I've got a few but are not comfortable or too heavy to use when the family gets together. I like to hear your preferences and opinions, I got a Blackstone last Christmas, and still looking for tools that work for me.
This is definitely timely. I sent you a message after your last video about spatulas for the Pit Boss and I actually bought a 3-burner last night, assembled today and planning the first cook in a bit. I fortunately have a couple silicon spatulas but plan to pick up a couple of the first ones you mentioned. I think 2 will work better for things like stir frys. Thanks again!
I purchased a 36" Blackstone in December of 2021. I had already watched a ton of flat top videos and I knew you recommended the New Star Food Service spatulas. I wasn't crazy about the white handles and they may have been out of stock at that time, so I purchased the deluxe set of Blackstone spatulas while I was picking up the griddle. The set I have was 3 spatulas. 2 14" and 1 shorter wider spatula, along with a large plastic bottle and a scraper. The 2 long spatulas suck and I only use the short wide spatula for smash burgers, although I have a bacon press. So, I looked on Amazon and they had your spatula in black. So I ordered 2 of them and they are fantastic. Much easier to get under eggs and roll up an omelette The Black stone spatulas stain and are hard to clean. These seem like they are better quality steel, but flexible. The Blackstone spatulas are not flexible at all!
Awesome channel keep up the content. I just got a PitBoss 2 Burner Ultimate Griddle and love it. I did pick up a set of the Blackstone E Series tools and they work pretty well if your looking for more of that harder edge to the spatula. They are nylon and have a temp of up to 400 degrees. I have a set of the DI ORO on the way. I would like to see the company that makes the ceramic topped "Ultimate" griddle make some tools to complete the experience.
Hey Flat top King... Good video,,,, I just wanted to add a note when talking bend of the handle and things like that. You can bend the handle to your liking like I did. I didn't wanna buy twice so I adjusted the bend on the one I have to make it feel better for me. Also, on another spatula I wrapped tennis tape around the handle for more grip and less heat... Thanks for the videos..
I bought my Blackstone spatulas a couple of years ago for my grill because everything else was too small and flimsy. They work well on my griddle, but I do have occasions like with eggs where they can be difficult to manipulate 'em, so I've been wondering which thin spatulas I should get. I guess I have some ideas now. I also got a smooth-surfaced 6" round cast iron press for doing smashburgers. It works great! With just a short preheat, no paper needed! I just smash down for 8-10 seconds, give it a twist and off it comes. I can always tell when it gets too cold though. I end up with shredburgers! I'm a little late to the show, but great info nonetheless! Thanks!
I got the Dexter and love it. The rest stay inside and never used. You pay more but made in the USA and that makes a big difference to me. Plus it’s the best one ever.
I didn't see it here (it's impossible to test every one) but Hell's Handle from Mercer is also a great lineup of tools that was highly recommended to me. I bought two different turners (large and small) and they've been great so far and their whole line (afaik) is made in the USA as well. Just another option for people looking for a high quality USA made turner.
Do a update video with the PIT BOSS ULTIMATE GRIDDLE KIT 5- PIECE. I'm wanna know what you guys think about them. If there sturdy or really flexible. Also you guys are hilarious with your back and fourth banter. Love the videos keep
I have had them for 2 weeks and haven't opened them yet...alot of negative things out there at this moment and I want to stay clear for now..just the truth... People are having problems melting and the logo coming off...
@@TheFlatTopKing Shoot i literally ordered them a hour and a half ago ahahaha. Ill just return them if need be. Where were you hearing about them melting. I couldn't seem to find any reviews online? Thanks for your feed back and I appreciate the honesty
Neil, I appreciate this video…so many choice for spatulas. Question, I just bought a Kamado Joe Korner Steel Griddle for my Egg and am looking at spatulas. Why not use a silicon spatula to help protect the surface? One squid to the other, thanks for your videos!
You absolutely can but you will find that scraping a griddle with metal is somewhat necessary...not damaging but to clean off griddle and fond from sugars etc...the silicone kinds just dont give that relief...but can you mix and match absolutely
Great video and lots of good stuff to consider. Of course it all comes down to personal preference. For me, I don't like the flexible spatulas. I really like those Blackstone "shovels" that you have there. I like that they don't bend, I like the handle. I see the beveled edge as a compromise between a thin spatula and the thick metal of the BS. My advice to everyone is to try out a few. See what you like. Take all the stuff in this video into consideration and keep what works best for you. They aren't all that expensive and you may find that different spatulas are better for different things in your hand.
Well actually they just released there version of silicon spatula's that seem to be great...I have not tried them out yet.The links to all the spatula's I use should be in the links below...
Hey guys, I just bought my new Camp chef flat top griddle and this video was really helpful when choosing for the right spatula. I decided to get New star since was your favorite also what kind is the burger press that you show on the video? If you guys could tell me I’ll really appreciate it.
I have several of those higher end Blackstone spatulas and the weight is definitely overkill. I actually get tired when cooking fried rice or stir fry stuff with a lot of spatula work. Been looking for some new, lighter tools for awhile now.
I have had it for about 2 weeks and still in the box...kidna hesitant because not so favorable things right now between melting and logo rubbing off etc..i was going to try and give it a few more to see what else being said...
Hi I like your video's If you don't like corners on your spatula. Do you ever use a knife and cut directly on the griddle surface? I see some do and some don't I have a 5 burner Pit Boss that I just love and I don't want to develop bad habits, as bad habits are hard to unlearn. I like the Dexter made in the USA means a lot.
In your write up on your site you list the Newstar White handle spatula but also a 3 piece set of 2 spatulas with the scraper. Are the black handled spatulas that come in that kit the same angle and all as the white handle because it seems like a better value to get the kit for 2 spatulas and scraper instead of buying two white handle ones and a scraper
Thanks for the video. So I purchased a similar "gold standard" spatula set from amazon (14pc set for $30) and a set from Wal-Mart (Blackstone Original 5-Piece Griddle Accessory Tool Kit for $21.97). I wanted so much to like the set from amazon however I foresee one problem. My knuckles will hit my Blackstone flat top grill (that small 1 inch lip on the front) when holding the spatula. However if I use the Blackstone spatulas they will not touch...thus preventing potential skin burn. Wish the Blackstone spatulas had a more rounded end though. Have you tried using your "gold standard" on your Blackstone to see if they touch the front lip of the griddle?
Thanks for the lesson. Everything you said makes a lot of sense. But I think you're missing one..kinda. It's called different thing and similar to your long silicone one. I know it as a fish turner or a fish spatula. Long and very thin and flexible. And it very well could be used more on bbq grill. I see a lot of chefs on TV use them. It help keep the skin on fish when cooking them I guess. I'll see if I can find mine or get some pics of the web and share send them to you or post them on your FB page.
I would be interested in the New Star Food Service spatulas due to being lightweight and flexible and having that handle with the lower angle. The only issue I have with them is no hole in the handle to hang on my griddle. Do you know of any other spatulas that are comparable to the New Stars which have the hole at the end of the handle? Thanks!
First comment, I have enjoyed every video I have watched from you and your wife! I have learned pretty much everything I know about griddling courtesy of you! Second comment. Before I retired, I was 10+ years involved in lean manufacturing and employee/user ergonomics. Everyone of us, and you and your wife are perfect examples of this, are different heights. Our physical height, the length of our arms, (and whatever_______, fill in the blank space), will figure into what that individual considers 'comfortable'. You, being taller than her, will most likely prefer a handle with a steeper angle, as opposed to your wife, being not as tall, would probably prefer a handle with a slightly shallower angle. Very much of what we use, and have available, is more or less built around a 36" work height. Short people are forced to reach higher, (and 'out of position'), while taller people may be forced to squat down a bit. The angle of the spatula handle will be important if the user doesn't know enough to just simply bend the handle to what is comfortable for that person. Its now past my bedtime, so, if needed, we can continue this conversation tomorrow! I've had my 3 brewski's for today. Have a good night!
@@TheFlatTopKing Just for grins and giggles, have you and your wife stand comfortably, straight upright, let your elbows rest comfortably at your waist line, bring your forearms up to a comfortable, horizontal position, palms down, no cheating here, be honest with yourself. Measure that distance to the floor and subtract 3 inches. That remaining distance is generally pretty close to what that individual will be most comfortable with whatever work/(cooking) surface height they're standing in front of. You may discover that at the end of the day your shoulders, back, and neck are tired and sore because you have to bend over or contort yourself down to use your griddle. Your wife, on the other hand, may find that she is having to stretch her back up a bit and raise her shoulders, and turn her wrist down somewhat to use the spatula, this plays into the thought of the angle of the spatula handle and how she may need to contort her wrist and shoulders to accommodate a particular spatula. I'm using the spatula as my primary example, but I've also needed to modify my method of dicing/chopping/mincing stuff. Working at the standard counter height is brutal painful!!!!! My neck and shoulders have no mercy on me!. My wife gave me a craft tray that I can put my cutting boards on, it adds about 3" height, and it makes all the difference in the world to my comfort when I'm dicing/slicing/chopping. A few bits and pieces to aren't a problem, but if I have to munch thru a bunch of stuff, I'm left hurting! Test for yourself what I've suggested! The results may surprise you!
NOPE...I have them still in the box...right now I dont think its the time..I have a fb group called the Griddle Group and the feedback so far is the only heat to 400 and melt and the pit boss is rubbing off. Now that dosnt mean they know how to use em but how would we know that...I am holding off and using my normal wood scraper and light metal
Is your new star Spatulas 14.5 inches ? I got mine like yours but your spatulas seem longer for some reason plz let me know ! Thank you sir ! Much appreciated
Expert Grill Stainless Steel Griddle Spatula with Comfortable Handle (4.6)4.6 stars out of 22 reviews 22 reviews $5.00 at Walmart. I bought this one. I am a newbie on the flat top, but this spatula is high quality for the price.
I have the heavy spatulas, absolutely love them, the flimsy thin ones are useless in my opinion, the blades having an edge helps…. Besides …. He with the most tools wins 😂….. have you seen the Angus beef Pattie’s?….. or the buffalo patties….. need a crane for em
If you were about to buy your first griddle, would you go traditional or ceramic coated non-stick? I can't see the non-stick lasting long. I'm leaning towards the Camp Chef. Thanks
I would say let me have enough time on the new one to give an honest opinion. I absolutely love my camp chef and i would never sway someone not to get it but on the other hand I have noticed some really great features on the Pit boss as well. Maybe less than 2 weeks I should have a review up
So I’m up at 1:41am and I’m checking out your video on spatulas, so now I’m going into the kitchen to compare all my metal spatulas to see which one I prefer! If my wife wakes up and sees me doing this with you talking on my iPad it’s going to feel like you are Jake from State Farm and I’m the guy in my pajamas whispering to you at 2am lol. If she says “who’s that” I’m going to have to say “Neal from flat top grill”. I’m going to be in time out for a while. Thanks for some great information and thank you for your service to this great land!
@The Flat Top King I was in a long time ago. HT2 on USS KITTY HAWK. Still yell at the kids, "Do not touch my bright work." Not sure if that was still a thing but in the 90s it was.
HHHAHAHAHA Go Navy. Not really I am sure it was more of a specific division thing. Like we said stuff all the time in the galleys i still say today. BONEHEAD was a big deal
@The Flat Top King I throw around a few others I shouldn't but it's habit. Love the channel. Keep up the good work and looking forward to trying out your rub when it comes out.
Not a fan...I like to purchase singles..BUT if you think you will use the WHOLE kit maybe...I always find myself only needing a few items in a box and the rest collects dust
Sorry it's me again. I just saw a comment about the knives you use and how you sharpen them. That would make a good video I think. Do you eat wild game? Maybe another video idea.
@@TheFlatTopKing elk steak? Deer backstraps? Duck nuggets or duck fingers? Blackened catfish or crappie. Lemmon pepper walleye? I'd love to see what you would do with those.
@@codyrussow170 i wonder what the point of those things are. They are just way to big/ strong. I mean no flexibility nothing. I can understand smashing a burger but thats it.
I’m not sure why you rate the out of stock white handle better than the in stock Black handle? Same spatula just different color. Maybe I’m hearing and seeing it wrong. Any way, Cool channel, tons of great info. You’re the reason I went with Camp Chef griddle. 👊🏻
Good question. Notice the black handle one still had the tag on it. I had not personally had cooking experience with it yet. Although the exactly same I didn’t want to push it with being 100 comfortable. I have used it since and like it. Thanks for your support. Hows your camp chef going
@@TheFlatTopKing Hey brother, Camp Chef Griddle is a solid performer. I’m actually using a Versatop 2X as a primary griddle here at home. Currently working with a Etsy store on getting a stainless steel cover made. Keep doing what you do, me and my family sit and watch all you videos on the big screen! 👊🏻
I just go with what feels good to me, being a retired chef I have drawers full of tongs, spatulas, basters, injectors... And I'm sure your there to with all that too.
I like your “go-to” spatula for general use. But, a wide beveled edge is key for me. Especially when working with smash burgers and other meats when you want to preserve the crust. The rounded edge and no bevel frustrates me when watching you struggle with them and tearing the meat. I would rather go straight on with the beveled edge and get all under the meat than try to use the side.
I 100 percent agree. I wish i could make the FTK spatula for sale. I would also make a silicone line that would knock the socks off. Now lets see how I can
I confess that I never thought I needed a RUclips video on spatulas... but that's a mighty impressive collection you've got there!

From my understanding they are. DI ORO is the fish turner i have.
@@TheFlatTopKing Perfect lets see some Ultimate Griddle only tools form PitBoss.

Thanks for the info
Di oro makes really nice stuff. I own all of their spatulas
They do...
Thanks!
Nevet to late bud...always appreciated...
I got the Dexter and love it. The rest stay inside and never used. You pay more but made in the USA and that makes a big difference to me. Plus it’s the best one ever.
Picked one up based on this video. I hope I like it and one with holes.
I ended up getting some from Wenco and I'm pretty happy so far
I didn't see it here (it's impossible to test every one) but Hell's Handle from Mercer is also a great lineup of tools that was highly recommended to me. I bought two different turners (large and small) and they've been great so far and their whole line (afaik) is made in the USA as well. Just another option for people looking for a high quality USA made turner.
thanks brother.. I wlll check em out
Wish I had seen this video before I bought the Blackstone “entrenching” tools…Marines would love them.

Perfectly said
That Dexter looks to be the same angle, but it gets the handle about an inch higher off the work surface. which would give more space from the heat.
Hi Neal,
Terrific video!! Maybe I missed it but what is the brand name of the Spatula you recommended for the Pit Boss Ceramic service????
Well actually they just released there version of silicon spatula's that seem to be great...I have not tried them out yet.The links to all the spatula's I use should be in the links below...
Hey guys, I just bought my new Camp chef flat top griddle and this video was really helpful when choosing for the right spatula. I decided to get New star since was your favorite also what kind is the burger press that you show on the video? If you guys could tell me I’ll really appreciate it.
Listed lower below in the must haves has a link.
Meat burger press.
Have you tried the OXO series of silicone spatulas and flippers? They are highly rated for home kitchen use, but could see them work on a griddle.
i have...very common...really all are close when it come to construction...I have not found any that really take charge yet
I have several of those higher end Blackstone spatulas and the weight is definitely overkill. I actually get tired when cooking fried rice or stir fry stuff with a lot of spatula work. Been looking for some new, lighter tools for awhile now.
Hope you find one you like. Trust when i say when you find one you like it makes all the Difference in the world
U should review the actual Pitboss spatula set thats on their website. Im curious to see that one.
I do not cut on my flat top. When doing the chop method with my scraper i even tell people to do it in a way that avoids scratching the surface.
@@TheFlatTopKing Thank you for your fast response. And one more thing Thank you for your service.
Blackstone makes an E-Series non stick griddle spatula kit made our of Nylon I believe.
They do I was able to look and feel them and I didnt like them. I think I have a great alternative coming soon. Have you used them.
We had bought them as well to try out last year Because this was asked,,,i could not tell a difference
I have and honestly thats all I use...I do know that the Dexter had the angle more upright...
I agree with Blackstone I wish they had rounded edges...
I still say my spatula bis not the same even the angle in the handle is different I think maybe I should order another set ?
If you need to jack up your house is too funny.......lol
Grt videos my friend
TY
Thanks for the lesson. Everything you said makes a lot of sense. But I think you're missing one..kinda.
It's called different thing and similar to your long silicone one. I know it as a fish turner or a fish spatula. Long and very thin and flexible. And it very well could be used more on bbq grill. I see a lot of chefs on TV use them. It help keep the skin on fish when cooking them I guess. I'll see if I can find mine or get some pics of the web and share send them to you or post them on your FB page.
Got ya
The large spatulas I think would be good for pancakes or large steaks.
Thanks!
Not that I know of...sorry
How about a video on the best silicone tools for Pit Boss. Doesn't seem like there is much out there designed for outdoor griddles and cleaning.
Ahh, just saw you have some listed in the drop down. Thanks
Yeah unfortunately my best one is not available on line. I am also learning what i like and dont like. I have more coming to help make a choice.
Have a good night!
hahhaha i really appreciate that comment thanks....Happy Easter....
