Mixed martial arts is a universal language no matter what your creed, race, age, or gender. When you see two people fighting everyone understands whats going on. These professional fighters do what 99% of the population try to avoid, which is fight! Weather we care to admit it or not, violence is a huge part of the human story and our history. There's something about fighting that draws people in. It's like no other sport. When I was in school and a fight would break out, everyone in the yard would stop playing basketball, soccer, baseball..etc in order to go see the fight. When a fight would break out, all other sports would be put on pause until school personal would come to break up the fight lol
Don't forget that mma is a sport. The purpose and goals of the sport of mma is very different than the purpose and goals of street fights and wars. Let's not get these things confused

People think giving their kids "everything" will make them "happy". Giving them _things_ will not make them happy. It will make the whole family's life hell. Learning the hard way, if anything is learned at all. At the very least, it's knowing what true misery is.

I trained BJJ so you BJJ guys might like this one. My instructor got attacked by some dude that was twice his size. My instructor is a black belt bjj and only weighs around 140. This guy was like 220 pounds. Well, you guys know how it goes. My instructor wound up mounted on the dudes chest. He would not let this big dude up for like 10 minutes. He wore him out breathless from trying to struggle his way out. Then once he was completely out of breath my instructor starting giving him some hard palm strikes to the side of the head. This big dude literally starting crying! He could not get up and run away. He was trapped. He was crying....PLEASE, PLEASE.

Schools train people like that with no consideration for character. Listen to what Firas said about kids who terrorize their parents but are totally behaved in the dojo. Training in the dojo is no reflection of behavior outside - unless the instructor deliberately makes it a priority.

Dealing with martial artists you deal with a lot of egos and it can easily surface via bullying. The leadership of the school has to keep these people in check but don't always do so.
I trained with Royce and he gave me my blue belt but in this fight Kimo had Royce's back and with a little bit of knowledge he would have submitted him. Royce did great until anyone else learned and then his lack of strength made him start losing.

If you were looking to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the mid 90s, it's much more likely because you were intensely interested in a "martial art that works" so much so that several nights a week you would take the train across to the other side of a big city to train under a blue or purple belt in a small, damp decrepid scout hall. These days people choose BJJ because they are not sure what they want to do and BJJ only slightly nudged out Muay Thai or CrossFit or F45 or something as an option.
