I always avoid anything that is spikey plastic because my first bird was killed by a broken plastic toy that went right into her heart. This plastic may be soft now but plastic dries out and hardens and may become very sharp after awhile. Please check often because plastic properties changes with time.
I am able to discipline my birds from landing on "my stuff" by nipping it in the bud from the very beginning. I basically use methods to change their behavior like one would change a child's behavior.

Brilliant! My parakeet loves my wooden blinds. Yesterday the new foraging tree arrived and he is really enjoying it. Fingers crossed that the blinds will be forgotten and the tree will replace them. It makes me feel better knowing that I am not the only one dealing with this. Drives me crazy trying to find something less destructive, than my front room blinds, for "Jack" to occupy his time with.

What works for me on almost any surface was to use a sticky furniture bumper, then attach fishing string so its not obvious to visitors across the curtain rods from one end to another. This prevented them from wanting to land on any surface like the top of the television, pc monitors . This way I could essentially hide the deterrent. I wanted to try the plastic spikes but they were always too big or visually unappealing

Great video! I used to have curtains on the window a few years ago but my 4 budgies did quite a number on it; tore it up into fibers, with poop all over it, thus when washed, the curtains fell apart. I resorted to hard plastic blinds and they are holding up; the birds can't sit on top due to the blinds fitting into the wall of the window and they don't like sitting in between each blind's small space.
Now for the correct pronunciation of the metal that you call "tin foil" - it's aluminum. I recall you saying the same back when you presented the outdoor aviary. In North America, it's pronounced AH - LOO- MIN - UM. In Europe, it's pronounced AL - YOU - MIN - E - UM; it's probably spelled differently in Europe also. When I was in college over 30 years ago, I remember the international students from Europe joking about how the U.S. pronounced aluminum (AH - LOO - MIN - UM), because they pronounced it AL- YOU - MIN - E- UM; I can't remember if they said it was spelled differently in Europe. Anyway, thanks for info on this affordable protection for curtains and doors.

Hehehe, I'smiling while watching this.I think every bird owner has these experiences.
Our birds don't even care about the plush tiger (ten times the volume of a tiel) we put on top of a cabinet. The blanket on the heating pipes (old appartment) is a beloved, warm and cosy place. For some reasons they do not chew on the curtains when they perch up there. Wallpapers is some other issue, there we have to intervene. Sometimes I think that some chewing toys are only a phase. And the birds are always searching for new things owner will forbid.😉
In the end the room design is ruined, either if the birds chew on things they shouldn't or by putting up bird scaring things. Sometimes I'm thinking of modelling a scarecrow. But something in mind is telling me, the parrots will observe it and after a few days play with the soundmaking parts of the scarecrow.
Thanks for your advice with the spikes. I'll keep that in mind.

My turquoise parrot loves getting on top of the overheads in the kitchen and pantry.
She particularly likes to go on the pantry when she’s hormonal (I have 600ml water bottles on top of the pantry to stop her)
I have cardboard on my cabinet where she likes to sit.
But one place I can’t work out how to stop her from going on is on top of my gas wall heater. I don’t have it on but she gets on the top and scraps it with her beak.
I tried a feather duster, a Halloween cat, my dad made something with wire but she’d just eventually get used to it.
I just keep shooing her off 🙄

I had three lovebirds last January. I set up my room with a long small shelf above the curtain that is easy to take down and clean easily and it extended about 2-3 inches beyond the curtains in every direction and touched the wall above the curtains so no droppings would get onto the curtains. It was a $5 piece of siding with three "L" supports and I hung a rope ladder and tent for them above parts of it for fun. They loved it and it was easy to care for. However, despite all the advice I received telling me they needed to be out of the cage for a half-hour a day and trying my best to keep them safe, two out of the three have died from crashing into walls after being started by a thud noise from outside. I was told if I trimmed their wings to glide, they could still get up high enough to attempt to glide down and land too hard and break their chest bone and die. So my birds had full flight feathers. Since they could die from a glide, and two out of three did die from full flight crashing, I now believe birds do not belong in captivity period. They belong out in the jungles where they came from. I do not believe they should be bred for captivity. I got mine as rescues after having been abandoned, but my last little Lovey, Joey, stays in his cage now, for his own safety. I will be getting a bigger cage for him soon, but I am sad he cannot fly free.

    • @debhawthorne1691
      @debhawthorne1691 3 года назад +1

I believe after clipping if they can get that high, he would be able to make a safe landing. While his feathers are growing back he can get a feel for the house. That's how I did my parakeets. I have four that fly free all day with no accidents. Of course I'm home to watch them all day. They do get into things. It's worth a try for a happy bird.

@@debhawthorne1691 After losing the other two despite their knowing the room really well and having several places to perch and fly to on every wall, I find it hard to believe that I could prevent a bird with full-flight from startling and running into something eventually. The room I was in was quite large and well set up for them, except that I could not keep out the sound of vehicles from outside. Perhaps that is the difference between your experience and mine. Perhaps you live in a quieter, more predictable environment. If I lived in my old quiet neighborhood I might try it, but with the unpredictability of noise here, I am going to just get as large of a cage as I can manage for him. My daughter could not bear to lose another bird to the same cause. BTW I have trained and cared for wild animals and domesticated animals my whole life. I had my birds trained to go into and out of their cages with a few words and a song. I did the research, but we cannot plan for everything I guess.
