    I did something similar and had no open cavity above. I was covering a popcorn ceiling and my boards were running parallel to the joists above the drywall. I hung 1x3 (3/4x2.5") nailer strips every 16" and routed several of them with a MicroJig MatchFit bit so I could insert a few clamps as I went... one near each wall and one in the center That way, I could slide them along as I go to hold the boards up as I straightened and nailed them in place. You can make some custom clamp covers out of scrap plywood that fit on the MicroJig X-Pads to give them extra surface area to hold the boards better. When you get to the last T&G board to hang, just chisel out the grove in the nailer to remove the clamps.
    Worked like a charm. Hanging T&G is no fun task when you are working alone.

    Fantastic. I watched this video and made the tools you used. Wow, what a difference. My wife measured and cut while I stayed on the scaffold and hung the boards. I was singing your praises the whole time. I only wish I would have made two of the "clothespin"-looking tools. They were like extra hands. Also, someone else reading this should make spares of the piece of T&G wood that fits the BowJack. I wasn't working anywhere near my shop. I ended up splintering mine and had to use a small piece but didn't have the cutout for the nail gun.Thanks very much for posting this video.

      Excellent! My Dad came up with the tools and they worked so well for me (staying on the scaffolding) halfway through our job I told him we had to put them on RUclips. Glad it is helping others! Thanks for letting me know. I passed your comments on to him.

    Great idea on the tools. Maybe you need to get it patent. The pens are great with vice to hold the wood, but the one that brings in the warped wood is very cool. I think you could sell the tools and make very good money.

    What would be the drawback to just using regular 1 x boards for a ceiling? I seem to only see tongue and groove planks.

      Hey Mikhail, I'm not going to put a finish on it. Just let it naturally age and get darker and richer in color.

    I like your choice of music :) Also, I've been told to make the end cuts at 45 degrees to as the wood shrinks there will be no gaps where they butt against each other. Thoughts?

      If you let the wood acclimate for a couple of months to the conditioned inside house environment (winter is best with the dry air), then leave room on either end of the run for expansion you should be OK. As you can see I used squared ends and I am satisfied with it a year later. It really depends on how picky you are. Keep in mind I set the ends on rafters, nailing them to hold them there.

    • @alanpfahler1707
      @alanpfahler1707 3 года назад +1

      Normally wood expands and contracts across the grain not with the grain. Therefore I can't see the need for mitering the ends. Just my opinion.

    What an amazing tip. You took all the fun out of fighting and holding and cussing and sweating and pinching and cussing and just made it really dare I say enjoyable to an extent. I made a set of your "Behemoth Pins" and was going to make the other tool you use for sliding the board into place, when I noticed there might be some specific angles involved, any clarification on this, or am I just overthinking it like usual? Either way, thank you for this.

    • @makeiteasydiy5424
      @makeiteasydiy5424  6 лет назад

      So glad it is helping others, as it made my almost impossible job doable. The angle for both the top piece of the hanger and the wedge that hangs from it should be the same as your ceiling pitch. You want it that way on the top piece so you don't rip into your insulation and on the wedge to hold the board at the correct angle until you get back to it. Thanks for the comment.

    • @makeiteasydiy5424
      @makeiteasydiy5424  6 лет назад

      I want to add: You see in my video where I did rip my insulation with a clothes pin, that was because we did a couple of takes. Right after that we rounded the back edges of the clothes pins so that would not happen anymore. No more rips from then on.

    • @makeiteasydiy5424
      @makeiteasydiy5424  7 лет назад +2

      They are homemade, we never named them as such. The silver one is made from a ceiling fan hanging bracket. The "clothespin" is made from a piece of T & G ceiling sandwiched between two boards.

      With a flat ceiling I would build a 2x4 platform that went the full width of the ceiling. You will only need to move it as you progressed.

    Where is the vapour barrier?

    • @makeiteasydiy5424
      @makeiteasydiy5424  6 лет назад +1

      I live in an in-between cold and hot climate (Mixed). I believe a house in my climate is going to get condensation with a Vapor Barrier (VB) at some point (I have never seen a 100% sealed VB), and the only way to get said condensation out is to have a house that breaths. That is why I use Vapor Retarders (VR), like the craft paper that is on the insulation in the video and the exterior of the house is also wrapped in a radiant VR. A VR allows the house and insulation to expel any condensation that occurs in time (while stopping air movement), whereas a VB will trap condensation and said condensation can only go back the way it came. See the link below. Thanks for the comment.
