The tragedy of this video is that not enough people have watched it. This actually has real information that I have been looking for, for like, months now.
My friend, something is extremely stupid with RUclips algorithm! You have such a great content and unique knowledge that’s not discussed on RUclips at all, but you have quite few subscribers! This is really sad. I wish you all success, keep going and you’ll reach great results! Thanks SO MUCH!
Wow...thanks for this PRACTICAL explanation. I'm not a mixing engineer (I like producing "electronic music" from time to time with hardware instruments) but I'm very curious, in general, about how sound processing hardware works. Thanks!
Of the gazillion reviews I have visited on RUclips only you have mentioned the FMR RNP. This preamp is in a class by itself I'm surprised that is so underated. Love your content man you rock!!!!!!!!!
The reason I mentioned the RNP is because I’ve owned it for about 15 years. Back then, I would agree that it was in a class of its own. However, in the last 5 years, there have been major improvements in cheap preamp circuits, and there are now several audio interfaces with preamps that are, to my ear, just as good. Among those would be Behringer Midas preamps, focusrite scarlett 2nd or 3rd Gen, and even better is the focusrite Clarett, UAD unison, apogee, ssl2+.
you crazy informative channel, i expect you have scandinavian or british accent, yet you got american accent teaching for chinese brand channel (isk), but regardless, you really well appreciated for the information 🤘🏻
Hey! Quick question: I recently bought a Neve 5211 Preamp to go with my BLA 17 Compressor (which I only use sometimes). I was also considering buying an Audioscape Opto compressor (LA-2A clone) to complete the chain. The 5211 seems legit but it's so expensive. Could I get similar results with a less expensive preamp? I don't wanna cheap out but it's hard to believe my 5211 sounds day and night better than just my Neumann into the Apollo. My current vocal chain is Neumann U87 > BLA 17 > Apollo Twin X Duo Interface
I’m surprised you hear a night and day difference between the preamps in your Apollo, and a Neve. I think the Unison preamps in the Apollo are fantastic, and able to hold their own even compared to a Neve. There aren’t any inexpensive preamps that I know of that will perform to the level you want. A couple of the better valued ones, in my opinion, are the cranborne audio Camden ec2, and Useful Arts makes a very nice tube preamp. Honestly though, if you’re not happy with the Neve or the preamps in your Apollo twin, then I don’t think a more expensive preamp is going to make much of a difference. Hope this helps :)
@@Get.Beautiful.Recordings hey, I think you misread my comment; I actually said it is hard to believe my Neve preamps are night and day better than my Apollo. I have yet to do a direct comparison, but I think I agree with you. I just got the Opto compressor for Christmas though!! so I will keep the preamp to use the outboard gear. if I do the direct comparison I will try to keep in mind to let you know how it goes. thanks for your reply and insight!
I understand only a tiny fraction of what you said. But you endorsed the FMR Audio RNP 8380. Hey, I own one of those! So now I’m happy, even if I don’t know why.
Well, I’ll try to make my explanations clearer. But yeah….. the FMR RNP is a pro quality preamp. Pair that with a good mic and good room acoustics and you should have great sounding recordings :)
Wow. Thank you so much. I just did some deep learning on an important subject I've been fuzzy about for years just by watching your video. Outstanding. One quick question. The specs on my interface (Apogee Symphony Desktop) show EIN as un-weighted. Is that the same as a-waighted? The full spec is: EIN: 129dB (un-weighted) @ 60dB, 150 Ohm input. I'd appreciate your clarification on it. Thanks again!
I know from experience that the preamps in the symphony are very good, but an un-weighted measurement is not helpful, and could be several Db’s different from an a- weighted measurement. Thanks for the question:)
DW Fearn!!!! Great vid! My FMR RNC convinced me to trust their pre. I’m gonna convince my newest client to go w/ an FMR Really Nice Pre and a tube mic ( shoutout to @Vanguard V13 🤤 ) instead of splurging on an Avalon tube pre. Last step would be maybe add a higher end converter if the interface has digital input. Again, great vid 😊!
I love the Audient Preamps for their transparency and clesness. Im currently using an ID14 mkii interface. And im thinking of getting the new ID24 so i can add the warm audio 1176 and LA2A clone preamps into the inserts.do you think this will help me improve on the quality of input i record and add some good harmonic distortion to the recording. Thanks
No, adding those compressors will not help you get better quality overall. They will give you a different type (or flavour) of compression, but not necessarily better than plugins. Most professional mixing engineers use plugins, not hardware. The Audient preamps are excellent.
@@Get.Beautiful.Recordings so having sorted the preamp of the Audient as being excellent. Do you think the converters in their ID14 mkii is excellent enough for getting good mixing and mastering if i have a good quality monitors like say the focals or Genelec one
If I use the preamps on the Behringer ADA8200 Ultragain Digital and send those signals via ADAT to my Babyface Pro FS, would I be getting Behringer preamp-quality sound or RME-quality sound? I supposed the quality would be Behringer. Am I correct? I want to double-check that with you. Thank you for all that you do for us in the music recording community.
Hii, ive searched everywhere for answers on my DIGITAL MPA (connected via s/pdif ) with inserts, the manual didn't specify how to connect the inserts to compressor,
These inserts require a 1/4 splitter cable. It’s the same as using the inserts on a behringer audio interface. This video has a good explanation. ruclips.net/video/gdHuS0UUzPw/видео.htmlsi=t70EdqmLzw2e5arG
Hello! I want to buy an Presonus Studio Channel for my Audient id4. Do u think i need an di boxes to don't damage the audio interface? Or i can pass directly to the Pressonus into Mic/Line ?
Small question, what about transformer-based preamps, like Neve 1073 etc? Are they a subset of solid state / transistor types? Or you’re planning to discuss them in a separate episode? Thanks in advance.
The built in preamps in the Apollo Twin are extremely good, I would recommend just using them. Most dedicated outboard preamps wouldn't offer much of an improvement, unless you get into the very expensive price range, in which case I would recommend the Useful Arts SFP-60.
It’s a top quality microphone. I have a bit of a conflict of interest answering this question though, because I sell iSK microphones, which I believe are the best quality for the price microphones on the market. Thanks for the question.

This is a great video with a lot of awesome info! Thanks for sharing this! 👍🎶🎙️

This is gold, i am really grateful for this channel and for your work
Glad you enjoy it!
Just wanted to say thank you! Great video, super high quality, and extremely informative! Would love more of this kind of content!
I’m glad it helped you :) I’ll be filming my next video tomorrow, and I certainly plan to keep them coming.
Thanks for commenting.
Great detailed explanation, you made it clear with the examples for the novice.
Thanks :) glad it was helpful:)
Great video, thank you! Btw, your recent interface video was hugely influential on me getting the SSL 12.. great quality stuff

Hats off. Clicked on the bell thingy. GIMME MOOOAAARRRR
Tell about ideal models of preamp
My personal favourite is the Cranborne Audio Camden EC-2. For a lower cost, and still quite good, the Behringer ADA8200.
This was a phenomenal explanation
Amazing job mate
Thank you for the great more in depth info! Great vid!
Could you cover active vs. Passive ribbon microphones. Which are apt. To. Need phantom power which are not necessary to power up. Thank you.
