I like the commentary on seedling success. I totally agree that its a skill u always hone and personally i try and not let my feelings get hurt when i fail epically. But thats gardening for ya.
This is my first year ive had any real success..i just put round 2 of broccoli in the ground..and now im about ready to out out about 50 swiss chard and bump up about 50 lettuce. Not one dill came up but it was really old seed...and im gonna start some more this week.
@@sislertx As for old seed I have a habit of it with mixed results, going to start storing in the freezer I with moister absorbing packets. I believe that Artic Armageddon seed bank expects those seeds to last decades or centuries. Didn't some of the seed from multi-millennia Egyptian tomes sprout??
I've got lettuce seed still germinating fine that's 4 to 6 yrs old. I do keep all my seeds in the fridge. AND, I germinate lettuce, onions, and overwinter flowers like snaps, calendula, foxglove, hollyhock, pansy inside on the floor of house where temp stays abt 65-70 degrees. Then once the seeds pop, I move them outside under a pecan tree so they get mid day shade until daytime high cools below 80.
I've never been able to carry pelleted seed over with any consistent results. You're not alone! In spite of their shortcomings, I still like them for the really tiny seeds like lettuce and carrots!
My first garden did terrific, so the next year I tripled my footprint and failed, miserably. I got so mad I gave up. This year, I decided to plant a fall garden (in 10A), I can't let these seeds defeat me. So far all my seeds did great on the germination side. Soon many will be transplanted and well see where we go from there. Keep the great content coming! I'm learning so much from you!
My lettuce transplants were very bad this fall for some reason. Had four whole rows that never came up and the ones that did come up are really slow. Normally I have amazing lettuce transplants. I ended up just direct seeding as it is getting late and will hope for the best.
Awww you cheated on the boys. Lol They always seemed to enjoy watermelon picking time. Stupid school. Baha Hope you got enough to enjoy together later. Congrats to the winners! 🍅 🎉
@@LazyDogFarm I figured that. I was seriously teasing you. I remember when my kids were little, they thought our world was supposed to be on hold while they were in school or at a friends house. Holy moly u feed them every time u water?? Wow...well i gotta up my game...got me some of that agrigrow...love it..use to use seaweed and another one..i forget its name cause im a convert. My pansy and viola and stock really look fine for once. PANSY had to be surface sewn and complete dark and i forgot so germination wasnt that great. I dont put onions in cells...maybe next year.
be very glad this storm changed direction. It has done an extreme amount of damage. Way too much rain. now 8 inches in 36 hours. lots of trees down. surge I am far enough away and did ok. lost my sheds. lots of clean up. will really see tomorrow when the sun rises. I have been adding bone meal to my starting mix. just a bit but it helps those little seeds and really boosts those roots.
I got a question I live in zone 8b where the weather is 88 to 93 degrees it’s my first time in green house planting but do you put seedlings in green house in the summer
I wanted to try buttercrunch lettuce and got a pack that was pelleted. None of them have come up this fall, but had near 100% germ on the Romaine, Lola Rosa and Looseleaf lettuce that weren't pelleted. First time ever trying pelleted seeds, never again.
I have had the same issues with pelleted romaine lettuce seed this year. I have replanted twice with zero germ. Guess I need new seed. Thanks for the info.
My spinach came up but my lettuce didn't go figure, both them from the local seed store , may have been old seed also, it was also very hot so I'll try again we getting cooler weather now thank goodness.
Thanks for the transplant tips. I can't figure out why my transplants always seem weaker than direct sowing. Maybe the agrothrive will help. Your watermelon patch makes me feel better about mine. Thank you.
I bought pelleted seed a few years back because I was tired of thinning. But the spotty germ rate and poor shelf life was more frustrating than the thinning.
Hey LD, I successfully hybridized a Cherokee purple and sun gold cherry. Its a medium sized purple tomato that stems out like a cherry tomato. Its a vigorous grower and seems to be disease resistant (still producing outside from May) not to mention tasty. Would you be interested in growing it next season? I guess I get to name it? Was thinking of something like Cherokee Cherry.
@@LazyDogFarm The only variation I noticed was that the older it got the more tomatoes it would produce in the clusters. It started out with abt. 4 per cluster and is up to 8+ per cluster currently. The fruit size are consistent.
Also, I meant to add this was an unintentional product of growing CP's and SG's in my greenhouse last season. I had a bunch of SG's drop on the gravel floor and had 10? volunteers this spring. I almost chucked them but remembered that there was a chance that they cross pollinated so I planted them all outside in my beds. All of them appeared to be original to the parents? accept this one.
Holy moly...ur office is freezing...seriously..nights got down to 60 here and i was shivering and layers of clothes...it quickly got back of to 90 and well i was back to shorts tshirt...how women back in the day wore all those clothes...just stumps me. I remember reading about that woman gardner who came up with the potatoe straw thing gardening nude..wasnt for the bugs i would too...but pushing 80 i would gross anyone who saw me...be a total fiasco..
Man I grew a crimson sweet watermelon and I wasn’t all that impressed with it. Plus the plants get huge so if you don’t have a lot of space it’s just not worth it.
I dont like peleted seeds. I had normal tomato seeds and then I had some peleted ones planted last yr. The pelted ones took another month to pop out of the soil in my trays
Glad you got a good watermelon or two. And congrats to the winners of the competition.
When I see you cut open a watermelon, I can't help but think of your local "duck mafia".
Much appreciate the style and substance of your vids, been semi binge watching for a month now. :D
Thanks Bo!
Travis you crack me up! Well at least you didn't get skunked lol
I’ve been putting my lettuce seed trays in the fridge at night and back under the lights during the day. Almost everything germinated this year!
Enjoyed video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Nice watermelons, guess the ducks made the gumbo pot!😳. ✌🏻
Ducks haven't visited in a while.
Hope all y'all stay safe from the hurricane Ian
We're good here. It went east, so we're just getting some light winds from it.

Yeah they're definitely worth the short shelf-life IMO.
Brussel Sprouts and Rutabaga's, it's nice to know the livestock gets some treats later on.

Good to hear! Fall gardens are the best!
Congrats to the winners 🎉 and good looking watermelons I’m surprised the ducks didn’t hear that watermelon zip open 😅
Quack quack!🦆🦆
I grew some Cantaloupe late this year, They were much better than my early Cantaloupes. I guess you never know.

Well the ducks will be happy
I like my compost pile too but I like them ducks even better. I'd have to offer them some to see if they'd eat em before I put em in the pile
Hell, if they suck, your neighbor ducks will love you again at least!

Onions and other’s in the greenhouse looking good.
Maybe seed issue or timing for those ones that didn’t come up.
I hear the ducks 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
Better save one of them melons for the duck squad
My Chianti onions haven’t popped yet either . The Georgia grannex came up in 5-6 days .
Ours are mostly up now. They just took a little longer than the others.
Clue the ducks!
When did you start your onions in the trays? Will starting end of Sept be beneficial or will it be to late? Zone 8b. Thanks for the shared knowledge.
Started ours in mid September. You should still be fine. I have more variety that I'm going to start today.

Yeah we started experimenting with feeding each time we water earlier this year and it worked well, so we kept doing it.

@Lapis Manalis no I don't believe it does. It does not dissolve quickly in water.
Be careful !
💪🏽 All juiced up
I started saving lettuce seeds from my garden last year.. it's easy and you get tons from just one plant, probably a quarter cup of seeds.
I got a question I live in zone 8b where the weather is 88 to 93 degrees it’s my first time in green house planting but do you put seedlings in green house in the summer
I do. But I have roll-up sides and a shade cloth on mine to keep it cooler.
Travis, when can we start growing some tobacco?
I've never tried growing it. Don't see many of the big farmers around here growing anymore either.
I know I probably missed it, but what was you feeling about using alfalfa Pellets as fertilizer?
I liked them. Gonna use them again this year on our garlic plot.

Siri cracked me up. Lol
Do you completely remove the perlite or move it to the side when reseeding empty spots?
I usually don't reseed cells that don't germinate. I just dump and start over.
I have had the same issues with pelleted romaine lettuce seed this year. I have replanted twice with zero germ. Guess I need new seed. Thanks for the info.
Is that a Benchmade pocketknife?
It is. Many years and miles on it.
@@LazyDogFarmlike a good friend.

You're not feeding the geese watermelon anymore?
Not any more. They still come visit on occasion.
Thanks for the transplant tips. I can't figure out why my transplants always seem weaker than direct sowing. Maybe the agrothrive will help. Your watermelon patch makes me feel better about mine. Thank you.
When the onion seeds get to 3 inches and you top them, how much to do you cut off? (1 inch, 2 inches)
Not much. Probably about a half inch or so off the top.
Came here to ask the same thing! Travis, you give a gollywhomper of applicable information every time! THANKS
Doesn’t lettuce need light to germinate. Could the seeds be too deep?
These pelleted seeds are usually planted like any other seed.
The ducks will be thrilled about the watermelons! I kept expecting them to come running up when you were cutting them open.
Me too! More duck vids please. Ha ha ha.
What brand of knife is that you're using?
Benchmade
Celery needs light to germinate. Cover very lightly when seeds are planted.
I bought pelleted seed a few years back because I was tired of thinning. But the spotty germ rate and poor shelf life was more frustrating than the thinning.
Feed the Ducks! Not the compost!
Those ducks are sooo funny..i sure hope the neighbors dycks make an appearance!!

Sure, I'd give it a try. Is it stabilized or do you still see some genetic variance in the fruit production?

Yeah 60s here makes us put on a jacket as well.
I always wondered if vacuum sealing seeds in a 1/2 gallon (or any size) Mason jar and then putting them in 40F temps would preserve the seeds better.
Not sure. I do know they seem to store much better in those mylar bags that we get from some seed companies as opposed to the paper packets.
Man I grew a crimson sweet watermelon and I wasn’t all that impressed with it. Plus the plants get huge so if you don’t have a lot of space it’s just not worth it.

I usually get very good germination with pelleted tomato seeds. They do need a good bit of overhead water though.
Looks like your watermelon was attacked by vine borer
We usually don't have vine borers down here. Not sure what got them.
Either that or bugs gave them bacterial wilt.
I think u are planting the watermelons to close together
We plant them just like the commercial guys around here do. When you have them on drip irrigation, you can get away with a little closer spacing.
call the ducks
Why compost the watermelons. Your birds would love them.
I gave the scraps from the good ones to the chickens. I put those unripe ones in the compost pile and worm bin.
I waiting for a DUCK ATTACK !!!!!!
you might be storing your seeds wrong. I get at least 2 to 3 years out of a pack of lettuce seeds from Johnny's
I probably should have kept them in the fridge instead of my room temp office.
Where are the ducks? They need the watermelons that aren’t great…not the compost!
The ducks have been staying at their place lately. Haven't seen them much.
Some of my onions died off and I don't know why, but I have more seeds.
Well that stinks!
&()*%@!*)(&%$@@$&* ( Cartoon cursing) My stupid onion seeds wont sprout!!!!!!!
Gotta talk to them just right.
