This is the only thing i hate about Cosworth's. As a young lad i always wanted one. I could buy one, but the insurance i couldn't. Now being 36 i can now afford the insurance, i now can't afford the dam car!
and to think that the cosworths chassis was designed in the early eighties (it's basically a short wheel Base Sierra cosworth that looks like an escort). Bring back homologation and legendary cars will be made again.
In my younger days the Sierra and Escort cossie were my dream cars and I'd love to own either of them today, I don't feel that way towards the focus. Today's cars are all heavy and have too many electronics, cars back then were simpler and more involving to drive. The Sierra and Escort cossie are both cult cars that will be collectable items, I can't see the focus ever ending up the same.
Yeah, the focus is just.. okay. I like the general look of it, but can't get over how awful the interior is. The stock shape of it is already pretty lame with random lines and a seeming lack of some unified style, but they just HAD to slap on the blue accents which make it look like some DIY rice. Escort looks by far more luxurious when it comes to that, or even the Sierra Cosworth for that matter, even if you can tell it's a bit dated.
Ignas359 what is better? my favourite gti is the mk2 but in comparison to a mk7 they are awful, but the mk1 and 2 are incredible still. the cosworths left a legacy, which very few cars can do. my favourite ford is the rs500 cosworth, but my mk1 focus rs is a far better car in reality, and by modern standards even that is poor. but i have what i need to keep me excited. i just wish there were homologation cars again. then we could have the best of both worlds. like we used to.
Well for starters, the Focus can't even beat the Escort on the track, as shown in the video. Given the similarities in chassis and engine, I doubt it could even beat either the MK1 or MK2 Sierra. At the very least, it would be really close. As for the rest, I already said in my previous comment - Interior looks far, far worse on the Focus. As if you took the standard Focus and bought some $5 'tuning' bits and pieces from your local store. I don't think it can compare to the Escort at all. Comparing to the Sierra though, you can tell which one is clearly older, but even then, take a late model Cossie with full black leather and it will still look nicer and more luxurious than the Focus. Exterior is rather subjective, and the Focus isn't bad, but if I had to choose.. well, Focus would be the last. Other than that, it might have some more bells and whistles due to being a newer car, possibly more reliable (though that isn't always the case and I don't know about how well the Focus RS compares here) and some more safety features, that's about it.
As a young boy, the Escort Cosworth was, and still is my dream car. There's something quite special about it and attracts a lot of attention. The Focus not so much.
Old skool! Gotta love the Cossie even tho the Focus is a great car I'd still opt for the one from my generation. I grew up with the Escort Cosworth as the ultimate 'I want one of those' cars.
The Escort Cossie, as suggested in this article, was entirely built by Karmann (as in Karmann Ghia). They chopped a Sierra platrofm and grafted an Escort shell on it. Cosworth did the engine upgrades but i don't know who did the chassis.
I was surprised at the result of that as I remember seeing (on Top Gear perhaps) a comparison made when the Focus RS came out which claimed that the Focus was faster in anything but a straight line.
Thanks mate...really appreciate your advice. The Cossie is a cult car for sure and always a memory for me growing up! They still make my heart race when I see one! lol
Classic cars in my opinion are a lot better cars these days, the feel and attention you get from a rare car being on the road feels so good. I owned classic vws such as the corrado g60 and golf highline vr6 but always wanted a Cosworth. Now I just moved to America I cannot get one :(
It's said that a few cosworths were imported into the U.S.but I've never seen them. However, there was a german Ford with a very similar chassis that I've seen before. They were called MERKUR.And no,I'm not talking about a Mercury either. It was called the Merkur XR4Ti.I'm not exactly sure if either car has a relation or not,but I love the look of the Cosworth. And yes,I do like the unorthodox looking rear spoiler. It's just different, that's all.
I had an Escort Cossie Lux model back in the day, treated myself after my divorce. Same colour, 18" Rondells, coilovers, sold it when the turbo oil seals went on it, wish I hadn't now !!
The Escort (and Sierras) were taken by coswotrth before they were even half built, so that they could finish them properly. Anything that rolls off a Ford production line, even with an RS badge on it cannot compare. Escort RS Cosworth was in the early 90's and still is today the car i would most love to own! ( and it wont be long before they get back up to the £25k they once were!)
Its odd when you think how crap the standard mk5 escort was, how they were able to make the Cosworth so awesome (ok its a sierra 4x4 underneath). By contrast the regular focus was superior to the regular escort in just about every area, yet the RS was a step backward on the cosworth in many ways. Only now in 2016 have they gone back to AWD and produced an true successor to the old cossie.
The ANT Well, do you know of any manufacturer who has done any rally homologation specials since the 90's? I can't thing of one. In any case, the escort cosworth was no closer to a real rally car that today's RS is, it had air-con, CD player, even leather seats if you wanted...
soundseeker63 group a cars were very closely related to their road going counterparts, hence for example the extra bits the rs500 had over the regular 3door cosworth. if the road cars didn't get it most often the competition car didn't either. at least the mk1 focus rs had the dignity in that it looked just like the wrc car and drove very well.
I think the RS Mk1 has the most closely looking WRC look and the driving style. Cossie is an awesome car but that transmission that feel's like it came right out of an ford transit is just awful.
reeisessit can you not fit kits to improve that? when i fitted a type 9 gearbox into my old Chevette rally car i fitted a different lever with all metal bearings to the linkage and that felt great, better than it ever did in a 1.6 sierra I'm sure. I'd be surprised if there isn't something similar for the 4x4 cosworth box
Absolutely love all Cosworths....the original Sierra RS Cosworth, the Sierra RS500 Cosworth, Sapphire RS Cosworth, Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4 and the almighty Escort Cosworth :-) I grew up as a young boy dreaming of owning one and will one day if I can find a good one. I have a 2004 Subaru Impreza STI at the moment....wonder how it would compare with the cossie around a track?
Focus SVT was good! Thank god Fords getting it right now and bringing US the the Euro focus. Won't get the RS though, not the first time around anyway. I hate that none of our hatches come with Brembos or Recaros. You can only get that stuff on Evo's and STI's here.
And I want the real hardcore seats that are optional. Just like the ones in the Clio 200 Cup. That little thing even has Brembos. I actually want Renault here more.
Noo, the Cosworth would have been in a different class to the M3 because it was forced in duction and prey to the 1.4 x capacity multiplier. The M3 was in the upto 2.5L class, the Sierra being 2.0 Turbo x 1.3 equates to 2.8 and over., but then that is still an unfair advantage as there was no limit on boost. In fact the Sierra was the largest capacity turbo car in use in BTCC.
the road going one is mainly just an economy car. 4wd would lessen the mileage and be more expensive. not to say it wouldn't be insane and much more fun to drive. but that's just why
This escort still has less than 16000 miles on it. It's obviously being kept in storage and only does about 10 miles per year! At the moment anyway. When she tested it back then in 2005?, it had about 10 thousand on it.
I am genuinely shocked by that, I was led to believe that the escort was baggy and tired compared to the new fast hatches, but thats been proven very wrong !
i wouldnt be so sure, the new rs has front wheel drive. It would probably win but will suffer from alot of understeer/torquesteer round the bends. It wont be able to match the cossie's cornering speeds but will edge it on the straights.
I'd have the Focus(it's from my era so that's why I think it looks better, older people may differ) with thicker front tires and take out the rear seats, then it would've won
The cossie is just a tubo-nutter car. I love it more than life itself (sometimes) Its the car that made me into a petrolhead. Yes it looks stupid, yes its old, but who cares!
Blimey, i expected the Cossie to win, but not by so much. Just goes to show how much slower new cars are, although they do seem to be picking up the pace with the new RS.
My point about the floorplan is what foolhardy designer designs a car in 1990, sticks a floorplan from a 1983 Sierra in it (last time I looked Sierra's were never known for good handling) Have you ever driven a standard Escort Cosworth? Have a try in a few, you'd change your mind about your words. I used to rave about them as a kid, then a couple passed through my hands in adulthood and you wonder what all the fuss was about.
What companies tend to do now is release big heavy cars that are slower than the cars they replaced, then release stripped out versions that are just as quick as the old versions, but for much more money. WTF. Escort cosworth. 25k. Absolute bargain!
I dont think i'll ever be lucky enough to on a Cosworth myself, (just too expensive to buy and run, for me!) but i have owned an S1 Escort RS Turbo and i'm currently on the look out for a clean Escort RS1600i! :) If you ever fancy a trip over to England, try and time it for around August time, because thats when Ford Fair is usualy on and weather permiting (50/50 chance over here!) its probably the best day out for any (european) Ford fan! More Cosworths there than you can shake a stick at! :D
If ford would just fit 4x4 to the focus it could have been awesome! Even with the current RS they've stuck to FWD, with 300bhp....come one Ford, you know 4wd is the way forward.
i prefer the cossie anyday, my stepdad has one, tuned to 380hp,bit lighter and 0-60 in 4.3 secs. its black! but still has the dreadful interior, but it smells nice!
never knew that...I pretty much ignored the zx2, ford here only puts work into the mustangs!! I drive a 240sx, but I would love to see either of these on the street...can't wait to see what they have coming. i hope they're not all mini vans lol. he would'nt tell me what they were on the list of vehicles, he only said they have 6 euro models?
i can prefer either and still tell when someone is being an ass, I never said I hated the cosworth, because it can still beat almost any muscle car if not all.
It has nothing to do with the new RS. They compred Cosy to Ford Focus RS Mark 1 (19982004). They should've compared it to the Focus ST Mark 2 (2004-present).
The Escort is a WRC car but the focus is nothing like it's rally equivelant. Ford made a big mistake when they put the RS badge on FWD cars in my opinion.
Cosworth was holding about 1.2 bar from the looks of it, so about 300bhp, this is why it was slightly faster than the focus rs. Power loss in the ff Cosworth transmission would have been around 90bhp, focus about 30+... Give the focus 1.3 bar and it would stay with and maybe ahead of the Cosworth,, this test was unfortunately flawed by a lack of understanding
I'm sure I watched this comparison on another motoring magazine and they reckoned the newer car was faster.. which surprised me! Anyway as aflipz says you can't have everything and there was no way a newer heavier car could keep up with an older one with the same power. Ford needed to make this more like 300hp to cope with the extra equipment. Which they now have. yey
@TheKamikazeMAR exactly! cossie to my left, veyron to my right...im looking at the cossie! sounds daft but i grew up with the cosworth as my dream car, im 30 now and still not owned one due to family commitments etc. but i will do!! oh yes i will :-)
This is a classic case of "be careful what you wish for" The idiot consumer begs for an ever-bigger car with a multitude of airbags, big cushy seats, 17" boat anchor wheels, big stereos with subwoofers, soft, vague suspensions and steering that shield you from road feel. They then asked them to improve fuel efficiency in spite of all the added fat... As a result, 15 years of advancements couldn't offset the handicap mandated by their own wish list of crap. They don't make cars for me....
@aflipz Too right.... I had an old skool mk2 Escort RS2000 flat fronted 1977 shell replica.. arched, roll caged, the lot with an all steel mostly cossie and Burton 2.2 L engine on 48 webbers.nearly pushing 200 bhp compared to the new stuff..it was untouchable.. I wish I'd never sold it...
6.2 seconds doesn't seem quick by today's standards, not sure it's true either. I remember lusting after this car when I was a teenager and my Parker's guide stated 5.5 seconds!
This is the only thing i hate about Cosworth's. As a young lad i always wanted one. I could buy one, but the insurance i couldn't. Now being 36 i can now afford the insurance, i now can't afford the dam car!
Β
lol... dont worry your not alone
Your lucky, I couldn’t afford the foking.. don’t mind the insurance
Story of my life! All of these modern classics have gone bonkers.
Prodigy and Cosworth = EPIC
and to think that the cosworths chassis was designed in the early eighties (it's basically a short wheel Base Sierra cosworth that looks like an escort).

Ignas359 though the focus rs i thought was awful at the time but now i reckon they look spot on, and after driving one i had to have one
The ANT Like I said, it's fine, pretty cool even, but I think the Sierra/Escort RS are still better cars.

As a young boy, the Escort Cosworth was, and still is my dream car. There's something quite special about it and attracts a lot of attention. The Focus not so much.
Would love one now as much as I did back then.

Who thinks they should do a 2020 escort cosworth
How about a 1985.5 Ford Escort Cosworth?
Joseph Caesar Padrón fuckin shut up about the old 85' escorts😂😂
Nah, it's had it's day and it was and still is a legend, time for focus and fiesta now, but id rather have and escos
Calum O'Hanlon
Road legal version of the Fiesta R5 rally car!
RWD version 🤔
the cossie is an all round better car end of. ;-}
Escort Cosworth. The body shell of a 1990's shopping car fitted with the floorpan of a 1983 family hatchback. Nice work.
I live in the uk and i only see maybe 1 or 2 a year, I would love to get one
Send a Fiesta ST or a Puma ST around that Track . Think they will both be quicker ????
But in my, and perhaps only my opinion, this Focus MK1 was the much more beautiful car.
I love both the Sierra and the Focus :)
I was surprised at the result of that as I remember seeing (on Top Gear perhaps) a comparison made when the Focus RS came out which claimed that the Focus was faster in anything but a straight line.
id take the escort cossie over the shitty replacement focus any day
My dad owns a escort cossie
The MineCartKid With Transformers
with a Sierra Engine
Well the sierra and the escort have the same engine..
+minicossie They're actually the same car. It's just a Sierra with escort body styling. Not one panel of an Escort will fit an Escort Cossie
+The MineCartKid With Transformers My dad knows karate.
Thanks mate...really appreciate your advice. The Cossie is a cult car for sure and always a memory for me growing up! They still make my heart race when I see one! lol

We needed this Escort. But we never got it. Yet another awesome car that America didn't get.

i saw an escort cosworth the other day. quite rare in australia as they weren't even sold here
My dad used to have a cosworth rs when i was kid, we had a lot of fun
I remember my local carwash had a sign saying no "Escort Cosworths" because the whale tail used to get damaged by the rotating brushes.
she said she still get a thrill from the cossie after 15 years i bet she don't get the same feeling from the focus in 15 years. Cosworth is legendary.
That was during a particularly bad period in the 80's with joy riding. My Focus RS Mk2 only cost me £320 to insure this year (2013).
Both stunning cars!!

I own a Focus RS, completely unmodified. Beautiful car

I really wish they gave the latest RS a Cosworth badge.
I love escort ... And the cossie too.
Shahrul Aiman the Escort WAS the only Cosworth, the Focus is an RS, not an RS Cosworth.. ;)
+Don Raggo dont forget the sierra cosworth
+ScoobyJoni oh hell yeah, the RS500 is a beautiful beast !!
And I want the real hardcore seats that are optional. Just like the ones in the Clio 200 Cup. That little thing even has Brembos. I actually want Renault here more.
Ten years later, Jason Potato drove the same car around the track at 1:25...
Noo, the Cosworth would have been in a different class to the M3 because it was forced in duction and prey to the 1.4 x capacity multiplier. And UNKLE's remix of No One Knows.
Brilliant soundtrack; fitting for the Cosworth.
RS Cosie is a top 10 car since I can remember. The Focus does look pretty awesome too though
both of these cars cost about the same now.. shows u how good the escort is
The new Focus was launched in 2004 and this episode is from 2008.
This escort still has less than 16000 miles on it. It's obviously being kept in storage and only does about 10 miles per year! At the moment anyway. When she tested it back then in 2005?, it had about 10 thousand on it.
no but in the new one; they have a new type of front suspension which they say takes all the torque steer

Proof Ford should have given the FRS a 4WD system and more power to boot.
I dont think i'll ever be lucky enough to on a Cosworth myself, (just too expensive to buy and run, for me!) but i have owned an S1 Escort RS Turbo and i'm currently on the look out for a clean Escort RS1600i! :)

Scarily the newest 3 cylinder Fiesta ST beat the same Esc Cos on a recent 5th Gear 😥. Still my dream car regardless 😁
I would like to see how the Cosy performs against the new RS Focus, that would be interesting.
ive got a mk one focus rs, just did alot of of work and got it up to 319bhp....yes its fun to drive :-)
Whale Tail Spoiler that vastly improved the handling FTW
If ford would just fit 4x4 to the focus it could have been awesome! Even with the current RS they've stuck to FWD, with 300bhp....come one Ford, you know 4wd is the way forward.
whats the track in the first minute or so, have been trying to find out for ages.
@SgtWhiteVN We bow to your expertise.
Im 17 and dream of the day i can be insured on a car like this. Atm my best quote is 2600 on a 1.3 fiesta
What year was this episode released does anyone know??
i prefer the cossie anyday, my stepdad has one, tuned to 380hp,bit lighter and 0-60 in 4.3 secs. its black! but still has the dreadful interior, but it smells nice!
I LOVE the RS Focus but compared to the Cossie it looks so darn dull. At least the stylists made an effort with the Escort.
never knew that...I pretty much ignored the zx2, ford here only puts work into the mustangs!! yes but he also told that he would rather keep Ford GTX :)
it´s so true before 21st century , make better cars than now...
It has nothing to do with the new RS. They compred Cosy to Ford Focus RS Mark 1 (19982004).
They should've compared it to the Focus ST Mark 2 (2004-present).
loving loving loving both of them
Great car the Escort Cosworth is.Its worth over £30k nowadays
she doesnt know what shes talking about the cossy does 0-60 in 5.7 secs and 145 miles per hour.Still the best car ford ever made
The Escort is a WRC car but the focus is nothing like it's rally equivelant. Ford made a big mistake when they put the RS badge on FWD cars in my opinion.

Which they now have. yey
I want a Cosworth so bad, too bad that getting one in America is just about impossible...
Everybody should drive a cossie at least once in their life.
@TheKamikazeMAR exactly! cossie to my left, veyron to my right...im looking at the cossie! sounds daft but i grew up with the cosworth as my dream car, im 30 now and still not owned one due to family commitments etc. but i will do!! oh yes i will :-)
Did you ever buy a cosworth?,. It’s 10 years later now...
That horrendous blue steering wheel in the focus looks like something out of Halfords.
It is an Escort in the vid. But i personaly love the Sierra...
Vicky says the Escort Cosworth does 0-60 in 6.2 seconds?
Nope! Ford's official time was 5.7 seconds!!!! I remember that time!
Who is talking shite?
Clarkson actually loves the ZR1
Can the cosworth motor be swapped into any escort?
Should have kept the escort, love them cars
This is a classic case of "be careful what you wish for"
The idiot consumer begs for an ever-bigger car with a multitude of airbags, big cushy seats, 17" boat anchor wheels, big stereos with subwoofers, soft, vague suspensions and steering that shield you from road feel. They then asked them to improve fuel efficiency in spite of all the added fat...
As a result, 15 years of advancements couldn't offset the handicap mandated by their own wish list of crap.
They don't make cars for me....
The escort Cosworth is a homologated race car. The focus rs is a tartted up shopping trolley. No surprises here.
@aflipz Too right.... I had an old skool mk2 Escort RS2000 flat fronted 1977 shell replica.. arched, roll caged, the lot with an all steel mostly cossie and Burton 2.2 L engine on 48 webbers.nearly pushing 200 bhp
compared to the new stuff..it was untouchable.. I wish I'd never sold it...
You have never driven one. It's a great car. It handles fantastic. And i'm pretty sure it would rape the Standard cossie.
she's a catch if you like the smaller euro cars
6.2 seconds doesn't seem quick by today's standards, not sure it's true either. I remember lusting after this car when I was a teenager and my Parker's guide stated 5.5 seconds!
I wish we had those cosworths here in the states. i wonder how much it would be to import one from the UK?
