- Hurricane Beryl has grown even stronger, becoming a Category 5 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. One person has been declared dead after the storm slammed through the Caribbean’s Windward Islands. The system reached Category 5 status late Monday with 160 mph winds as it headed west across the Caribbean Sea, making it the earliest Category 5 hurricane in recorded history. Michael Brennan, Director of the National Hurricane Center, joins Stephanie Coueignoux to discuss the latest with the catastrophic storm.

Ya noticed that too. Barbados said catv5 but pics show minor flooding and hardly no destruction. How does it turn from a 3 over water and hit 5 on the island. If you look at radar it looks like energy plums to the south of the hurricane. Manipulated
@@link.650 The water around the island is almost 2° warmer than the already warm water. It’s the heat from the warm water rising into the atmosphere that creates the convection currents that drive the storm.
For example, a hurricane cannot form above water below 79° F. At 80° hurricanes can form. The warmer the water gets, the more turbulent the air above it becomes and the stronger the storm becomes. Calculations for hurricane risk are based on .10° increments, so water that’s 3-4° warmer is a massive energy source for the storm.
