It seems that the definition of teacher has changed in the last decade or so. These thoughts were going through my mind this morning out on the road so I thought I'd find a place to park the Jeep, set up the tripod, and blabber. Maybe I need more input. How is content being taught now??

I agree!!! My kids don’t have the knowledge of basic things. I remember having books and learning from those, along with my teachers guidance. My kids don’t know how to use a book for anything. Also they don’t know half of what we were taught in school.

To me, the book was the key. As a student I would take notes during class on the CONTENT. Trying to write down everything I saw on the blackboard as well as what was coming out of the teacher’s mouth. The next part was the most important. Take it all (including book) home and then rewrite my notes as I incorporate book information with it. By doing this I would *never* have to “cram” for a test. The work was put in every day. I still have my college notes of 45 years ago on my shelves.

What is the expected role of a teacher? Maybe we only need to look as far as our local bank. How many tellers do you see today vs ten years ago? Twenty years ago? A touchy subject to cover. Could use a deeper dive into our society as a whole. A thirty second sound bite carries more weight than a document on the same subject.

I can't answer what the expected role of a teacher is today. I've been out over a decade. Someone still in education can answer that best. I only know what the role(s) used to be.
