My dad had a [second hand] 60s Cooper in the early 70s. Red with a black roof. He used to say it went like stink. 😁👍

Very nice - the Mk2s are often overlooked but they're great cars. I've got two, a '68 Cooper and a '68 Cooper S and they both have oodles of character.

I drove one of those in 1969, but it was the Cooper S. What a machine, fast and fun. Should have bought it.

There was also a 970cc Cooper S for racing in the under 1000cc class

I had one! In reality a good 998 Cooper was almost as fast.

Indeed, they're worth a pretty penny these days!

I do love dropping SUV drivers around corners in my 33 year old mini. It is such a blast to drive 🙂

If there is a 'modern' equivalent, I'm going with the mk 1 Toyota Aygo. So much fun to drive a 67hp car at 10 tenths than a high powered sports car at one third its potential.

I have a blast in my wife's 108, not being a particularly fast driver it's enough for me. On the other hand my own car is a 4.3 v8 300hp job. I have to treat that with respect!

Hard to argue with that, cracking little cars!

The team manager at the Mini Rally program, was also the man who went on to make the Ford Escort what it became and also the Ford Sierra Cosworth.

The first Cooper was 997 cc - weird combination of an 850 bore (well, slightly smaller) and a very long stroke crank. They were okay but didn't last long in service. The 998 Cooper that replaced in from late '63 was vastly better being both faster and almost unbreakable. The 998 had a much shorter stroke from the 948 engine and a bigger bore. The Cooper S was great of course but apart from the p*ss poor 7 inch front discs, the 998 Cooper was a cracking thing especially for the pittance it cost. The Mark 2 had slightly better brakes, four synchro gearbox and a raft of improvements. The 1275GT that replaced it was never as nice tbh, quite a harsh and tinny thing.

Hi . Had no idea of Mr. Ferrari 's enthusiam fo the Cooper . Father had , it's claimed , the very first privately registered Morris Mini Cooper in 1961 and held the Oddicombe Hill Climb record for 2 years . I think you meant 997 when you said 970 . The one shown looks in immaculate condition . Thankyou

@@ClassicsWorldUK I’m sitting in Canada, you’re in the right country to find a HMC, and you folks are resourceful, so I’m sure you’ll find one 😊

This is what a Mini is, where it deserves the Mini name. Not the later blobby BMW Minis which are the size of a Golf these days, it’s shocking.

They're certainly not very Mini anymore...

I'd love to own one but the ULEZ charge means I can't 😔 I'm trying to buy one at the moment but I haven't found one that is ULEZ exempt.

    • @ClassicsWorldUK

Pre-1984 cars are historic, so ULEZ exempt ;)

    • @dRew-something

@@ClassicsWorldUK thanks for your reply.. I've been typing in license plates into the online ULEZ checker and all have shown up as 'not ULEZ exempt'. I think what it is,is that the owners of the cars I've seen for sale don't live in London and haven't registered their car as a 'historic car'.

So despite selling lots of cars in the 60s BMC was skint.

Over-rated. Just get the base model and spend that rest on driving lessons

Then l guess you never drove one in 1961 . My father had a very early examlple in 1961 and held the Oddicombe Hill Climb record with it fo 2 years.
