    Vz.58 guy here. It's incredibly difficult to load a Vz mag with any clip other than a BXN clip, you're almost guaranteed to unlock the bolt if you put too much pressure on the bolt carrier. The only disadvantage is the rounds can come loose in your pouch more easily than others, but it makes perfect sense that their clips grip the rounds weaker so you don't have to mash on them so much, and the weaker grip doesn't matter much since you're just using the clips to load mags during range practice anyway, unlike with an SKS.

    • @Triangle26
      @Triangle26  12 дней назад

      That makes a lot of sense. I have definitely noticed that BXN clips are more prone to occasionally losing a round in my pouches than other clips. In my opinion, that's a small price to pay for incredibly slick loading though. I'd rather load 9 rounds quickly than 10 rounds slowly!

    I'm an old guy who bought my SKS "back in the day." Of course, these were pre-internet times and I just bought whatever stripper clips I could find at gun shows, pawnshops, etc. Plenty of circle 31's in the bunch and I found a few faulty ones. However, with a little sanding, filing, and bending, they were all made to work okay. Just took a little time and patience. Back then, imported 7.62x39 was cheap and available, and I blasted away tons of it. Nowadays, it just sits in my "Rainy Day" ammo boxes. I've even got some hollow points. When's the last time you've seen those?

    Just so all you new collectors know there are milsurp gems still out there to be found. Dont get discouraged. I recently picked up a full span can of chinese military surplus mid 60s 7.62x39 with original factory 31 clip for .25c a round. I keep seeing new collectors says they cant find good deals on surplus but it is out there.
    The nc star stripper clips are junk. I got a small batch from a shop for free and the channel for yhe cartridge rim was too deep causing the rounds to tilt very slightly and bind. They can be fixed by building a jig to slide the clip over a bend the lip inward. On the other hand I have seen them be too tight. Just avoid them if you can. Sorry for the rant.

The one I have now is a non-parts machine Norinco so I molded it yrs ago . Current setup is Choate Conventional stock and gas tube cover, vintage Norinco ambi safety(as a lefty I really appreciate), and a 20 rd Chinese Star mag. I still have all surplus parts. There are definitely a LOT of junk repro clips on the market. However, one thing I have learned that made a world of difference with both the surplus and the repro clips that I have is using a pin punch to manually adjust the spring tension on the clips. If the spring tension is too tight, the clips will not feed completely and usually bind on the fifth or sixth round. If the spring is crimped to retain the ammo, the problem is more likely to occur as opposed to clips that are smooth on the end, such as the Yugo surplus clips. Bending the springs just a bit to lessen the tension solved this issue and even the repro clips I have are acceptable. This won't work if repro clips are out of tolerance and require modification just to mate with the clip bracket on the bolt carrier, but the binding issue is readily resolved with just a moment of work.

    wish I had seen this when I bought my Yugo M59/66A1, as I ended up buying a pack of 20 NCSTAR clips, which I use even with my AKM loadout via an adapter tool that I got from a small company making em to order via 3d printing. some of the clips work ok, but the others are either way too tight and lock up, or way too loose causing the rounds too flop around and slide down in a zig zag pattern often causing jams, and usually I lose one round when pulling em out of of the pouch. I got em to work if I guided the rounds manually from the bottom 2 or 3 at a time but this was tedious, so for a while I gave up on em in favor of single loading loose rounds, until I learned about the "tilt the top round up" trick, as that made even the real tight ones marginally more usable.

I just got a couple orders from ebay, and one was the Vietnam era 31 stamped that work great, and the others were cheaper, but I noticed they have more curvature to them, which kinda bunches all the rounds together. I believe it is *HOW YOU USE THE CLIPS that is more significant* than the clips you have. Just my opinion based on my own experience. I have what I believe to be the CIRCLE 31 repros, and also Yugoslavian surplus unmarked clips that the ammo came on from the can (1980). The YUGO ammo is brass cased (M67). When loading my SKS there is no discernible differences of the function of the clips, and they both work great. However, when I push the rounds into the mag I lift on the tip of the top round and push at the base of the casing so that the top round is used to push the rounds underneath RIGHT AT THE POINT OF FRICTION, where the casing meets the clip. This way all of my force is in line with the resistance, which means no wasted force. I have never had any difficulty loading my SKS with these clips in this manner. At minimum, the Circle 31 clips should give me problems, according to common knowledge. Yet, I have no such problems.

    • @Triangle26
      @Triangle26  Год назад +5

      At the end of the day, there’s no arguing with performance. If the clips work for you, that’s all that matters.
      I agree that good technique is important, as you describe. That said, my experience has been that some clips are consistently very forgiving, and others absolutely refuse to cooperate.

      @@Triangle26 - I've only had experience with these two clips, and that is why I mentioned this is only my own opinion based on my experience. I have no doubt you have much more experience with a variety of clips than I do. If only pressing down in the middle of the cartridge with the thumb then I would expect differences between clips to be more apparent.
      I found a video right when I got my Type 56 that demonstrated the loading method I outlined. As a Journeyman Toolmaker it really appealed to me and made sense to load the rounds that way, and I've never done it any other way.

    I just bought 36 surplus chinese stripper clips, they say 31 like the examples you showed. Not the Amazon special ones. They work just fine, no need to pinch the top round. Coincidentally, I fired my 10 mil series Sino-Albanian SKS three days ago, most to test a Barska receiver mount. It worked fine, I just need to figure out what optic I want to put on.
    Struggling between an 3.5 x 30 prism optic vs an LVPO 1-4.

      Awesome. The “legit” 31’s are good to go.

    Excellent presentation, /26\.
    As a regular P2P seller of Chinese and Russian SKS's (thru my local -01) I always included five BXN stripper clips in the deal; along with the 'lift the top round' as a best practice when punching in the rounds.
    Why? ---> This extra step (plus my SKS 101 for newbies) demonstrably added to the a) buyer's overall satisfaction with the purchase, b) his/her shooting experience and c) a 100% A+ referral grade.
    After the "SMO" kicked off I had to discontinue adding the BXN clips as part of the deal. My supplier and his business partner out of Odessa have since moved over to another line of work.
    Although I still have more packs of BXN clips than I need, now that I know you're a reliable source for genuine BXN clips, I'll be sure to include this tip in my P2P sales chatter.

      Great question! I call that "Krag" loading, as it is vaguely reminiscent of how the old Krag-Jorgensen rifles were loaded (before charging strips were the global standard). From a recreational shooter's perspective, I think it's a perfectly legitimate way to load. It works, it's fun, and it isn't going to hurt anything. If that's how people want to do it, more power to them. From a more military orientation, there is a big efficiency problem. The SKS is designed with a last round hold-open, whereas "krag loading" requires the bolt to be forward. As a rule of thumb, a loading methodology should take into consideration the status of the weapon at the time in which ammunition is most urgently needed. There are other problems, but I think that's the big one.

    I've had 2 Chinese SKS's and love them, however my second SKS will not load with stripper clips. The rounds bind up at the tip of the round, as if the rounds are too long to pass. I can load single rounds by holding back the bolt. If I try loading with the bolt held back on its own, as soon as the round starts past the lock, the bolt releases and jams my fingers and the round. The first one works both ways. Thoughts? Love your content.

    • @Triangle26
      @Triangle26  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Versions of your question come up a lot, which is why aftermarket producers don't sell competitively priced reproductions of hard-to-find military parts. The short answer, as best as I understand it, has to do with economy of scale.
      Stamped steel components like a fixed 10-round magazine are inexpensive to manufacture, *if you already have* the specific tooling, specs, and other production infrastructure. If you are starting from scratch, the startup costs are enormous.
      Not many companies are in a position to put down the type of money required to start production of that type of a product, and those that are will devote those resources to products with larger markets.

    As someone who had minor luck on the amazon clips, I am now wondering if even those don't work as well as some could. I have at least one actual Chinese stripper clip (just a 386 on the back) and the rest seem to be some combination of commerical types. I have a few that are labled CTC that seem to work OK. the "(31) " clips I ended up with were still packed in some sort of cosmoline, and I had to clean them up, but the first pack I got seemed to work well most of the time. Still, I've got some new scars on my thumb knuckle from some of them.
    I might need to order some from you anyway!

    • @Triangle26
      @Triangle26  Год назад

      My rule of thumb (a heavily scarred thumb, ha!), is that quality clips should fully charge the weapon in two distinct motions. The inset video at 2:48 shows this pretty well. The first 8-9 rounds should flow in pretty effortlessly, but it is normal in my experience for the final 1-2 rounds to require a second gentle push. There should be no catching or binding beyond these two motions, and (within reason) one should not need to be especially precise in these movements. If this is not what you are experiencing, you can reasonably expect better performance from other clips. I have never injured myself using a BXN clip, and I have really jacked up my hands using other products. If you ever want to give them a try, you know where to find me!

    Hi, I recently obtained my first Chinese SKS rifle, and I'm trying to get some help in identifying the arsenal code and date of manufacture. The arsenal code appears to be a larger Triangle with a smaller inverted Triangle within it and a 5 within that. To the right of that on the reciever is type 56 Chinese markings, followed by the serial number which begins in 25 and is a seven digit number. There's a import mark to the right of that which reads "SKS 7.62X39 CHINA CAI ST ALB VT" I believe that's century arms import marks. Can anyone help me determine which factory this was made in and when? Many thanks.

    • @Triangle26
      @Triangle26  11 месяцев назад +1

      Sounds like the factory code is a less common one that I call “6665”. It may actually be 6656, 6566, 5666 etcetera, but the takeaway is that it has 3 stylized 6’s and a standardized 5. Never seen a decoded location for that marking before.
      25 date code translates to 1980.

    • @ericgeorge5300
      @ericgeorge5300 11 месяцев назад +1

      @Triangle26 thank you for your help, I didn't realize these rifles were even made in the 80s. Do you know when military production of SKS's ended? I know they we're being made for the commercial market in the 90s if I recall correctly.

    • @Triangle26
      @Triangle26  11 месяцев назад

      @@ericgeorge5300The distinction between military and commercial production gets complicated in communist countries like China. Officially, the big shift from military to commercial production took place in 1980, exactly when your rifle was made.
      That said, the “commercial” rifles built during the early and mid-1980’s were literally identical to the “military” rifles that came before them. They literally used their existing military production infrastructure to produce “commercial” firearms. One day the production lines were shipping to the PLA, the next day they were shipping exactly the same product to Norinco for export.
