PTX's audio mixer is Ed Boyer. He does such a fantastic job of balancing everyone's voices, that i favor their studio productions. But as you just saw, the raw materials he starts with is already near perfection.
On the recent concerts they have a section with them setting on a sofa. This is in reference to many of their earlier RUclips videos simply being the 5 of them setting on a sofa in one of their homes, recording their song. None of these had any studio mastering or complex editing involved.
My favorite Pentatonix videos are the ones that have as little post production as possible. Any of their "Evolution of..." videos are great. All done in one take and extremely impressive. Their version of Silent Night gorgeous and astonishing. Their cover of Gold is breathtaking. There are other less produced songs too, but those are a good start.
The live one-takes are my favourites. You really see how each of them is working constantly throughout the song, filling in harmonies and sound effects. And "Havana." There's something utterly charming about their cover of "Havana."
OMG! Nobody else does Silent Night like them & now to me their version is the best. Period. I won't spoil the surprise, I'll just second that you have to hear it! It doesn't matter the season, either. 🙂
They are incredibobble!!!!!! Be sure and watch the 90's Dance Medley and then Hallelujah, The Prayer, Amazing Grace, My Favorite Things, and on and on and on...
They refuse to record a song that they can’t recreate live! Keeps their songs authentic I think. Had the pleasure of seeing them before Avi left. One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to hands down.
This performance was for a Make A Wish recipient!!! These guys are so humble!!! Next, you gotta check out Recording of Evergreen, Can't Hold Us, Wizard of Aahs ft. Pentatonix.
@@MaddyReactions What @ashleywomac2665 didn't mention is that "Wizard of Ahhhs" is an homage to the 1939 movie, _The Wizard of Oz,_ starring Judy Garland. If you've never seen the original movie, "Wizard of Ahhhs" won't make any sense to you, so be sure and take care of that first. If you've seen "Wicked," be aware that while "Wicked" has the same setting as _The Wizard of Oz_ it ISN'T the same and it won't prepare you for "Wizard of Ahhhs." You really do need to see the original movie first.
I love how they work together, balance and support each other, without singing over one another. No need for an equalizer, no ego, no showing off or showing someone else up. Just pure talent devoted to the music.
When I found them I spent month binging on their stuff. As you say, to be on pitch, and in sync with no drums or metronome , learning all your parts that involve choruses, harmonies, percussive and ambient sounds in one track is just mind blowing, once again great reaction!
Don't worry about being late to find them. You are with all of us Pentaholics now and you have tons of enjoyment ahead of you. We look forward to watching more of your Pentatonix reactions.
Sorry im a bit late to it, but welcome to the wonderful world of being a pentaholic with us. This group is a living treasure and i am always so happy to see more people discover them.
🎼🔥🔥🔥🔥🙄🔥🔥🔥🔥🎼 .. fire .. total fire !! I could watch this all day. Your face cracked me up on this one Maddy .. lol 🤩 .. you were like How ? .. How ? .. How ? .. I am astonished also. Magical ⭐️⭐️⭐️💗⭐️⭐️⭐️
@@MaddyReactions it is really hard to believe! I have a suggestion for a song by Pentatonix that I think you will like a lot , it is an original by them and is titles "Love Again" .. enjoy 🦋 .. keep 'em coming
For a great live performance I recommend their PopSpring 2016 concert. It was sponsored by MTV so they have great audio. It is three original songs and Their Evolution of Michael Jackson mashup.
You will be more amazed at their version of Hallelujah. The official version is amazing but the live Christmas one will give you the same vibes as this video.
You’ll have been told by now that Daft Punk won them their first Grammy, and very well-deserved. Their version of Hallelujah is a masterpiece, and arguably the best version of Hallelujah which exists. For one which isn’t reacted to enough but is another masterpiece (and another Grammy-winner), you should check out their Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. A song without words… performed by a Capella artists
I second a previous suggestion that you watch PENTATONIX THE RECORDING OF EVERGREEN. Evergreen is their 2021 Grammy nominated album. To be open, you will see that they do sometimes layer and stack vocals. It just depends on the situation and the sound they are trying to achieve.
Welcome to the world of the Pentaholics. I suggest viewing their studio recording videos with the possible exception of Hallelujah from their NBC Christmas Special. We all have our favorites as they have well over a billion views on youtube. Pretty hard to go wrong. After listening to the videos you can also find many of the songs from their show at the Hollywood Bowl last Christmas available on youtube. They also put on a great live show. I saw them about 8 years ago and again in 2019. I'm hoping to catch them at an outdoor venue at the end of this month. They seem to be getting more polished live over the years.
"Perfect pitch" is something of a moving target. I think that for the most part the members of Pentatonix have perfect relative pitch - given an accurate reference pitch they'll each come up with the correct pitch for their part in the arrangement. Scott and Kirstie have both said that when they feel lost in a performance they'll listen to Mitch, because once he starts he's ALWAYS accurate, so when they hear what he's singing they can extrapolate where they should be. But think for a minute about the kind of person who can just sing, say, B-flat if you ask him to give you a B-flat. That's true perfect pitch, and to the best of my knowledge the only member of Pentatonix who has that kind of perfect pitch is Kevin. So if they need someone to give them a starting note, Pentatonix looks to Kevin for that. As for how they do it, it's obviously magic. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I believe their creative process is basically jamming together and trying stuff out. So I guess when the get to the studio they already have it prepped for live performances. The episodes of The Sing Off featuring them are great!
Hi Maddy, so glad Nick followed up your first PTX reaction with this one, as it really reveals their talent & skills. But I don't think you've been living under a rock. How many times in the last dozen-ish years did you find yourself looking for some new music to listen to and think, "What I really want is a super-talented a capella group to re-invent pop hits I already love and perform them in a charismatic way with creative & captivating videos."? Once you find them, of course you think, "How did I not know something I'm so excited by existed? For a decade!?" But honestly, what they do is so unique they had to do it before we all could know how much we needed them. For fun, why not ask a friend who knows you're doing music reactions if they'd like to hear a a capella group you find interesting. You'll probably get the polite smile & maybe an, "OK, if you really want me to." Then show them the original Daft Punk video & see how they react.😜
Just think how many hours daily they must practice to be this naturally perfect. I think its rare for soul mates to find each other, now imagine it's a group of 5 that seems to naturally have voices in synch. A perfect storm..
They did a life performance recently at the Hollywood bowl. I believe it was last fall. You should definitely check that one out because it's a lot better quality. But as you will see, the newer videos feature a new bass singer, Matt
The only thing that lacks here is the bass volume, when they record the songs they make sure to adjust the volume since singing is naturally easier to make loud than bass or beatboxing but yes aside from that out of their control it’s almost identical thank you for reacting to this very great reaction!
Good choice. My only issue with this fancam video is that the bass and percussion don’t always come through super clear. That flawless key change at about 4:40 gives me goosebumps every time.
As I said before. They are so good. I saw them live. Check out their other songs please. " Amazing Grace " " The Prayer " Jolene with PTX it won then a Grammy and the second one for Dolly for the same song years before. " Hallelujah " " Sound of Silence " " Imagine " " 90's Dance Medley " " Little Drummer Boy " " Can you Feel The Love Tonight " there is many more.
Watch their version of Gold. It was done as a live take. Notice not only how in sync they are, but how they are completely relaxed and not even looking at each other. Oh, and listen to the Keisha original first; then compare how they do completely acappella what she does with tons of manipulation.
I love listening to their live performances. You should check out their cover of Silent Night. They perform it live in a church with the natural echo and their live Hallelujah performance from the 2016 Christmas special.
The only time they have done autotune wasn't because they NEED it, but it was a tribute to Cher in their 90's Dance Medley as Cher was the first one to really use autotune so they do have a bit of that in that performance but it's purely an artistic choice and tribute
Ben Bram (their arranger) says they will typically layer their voices about two-three times in studio recordings. Ed Boyer the engineer says he tries not to tamper with their pitch too much because they need to sound like they do on tour. To my untrained ear, it just sounds slightly fuller on recordings than it does live. But they are amazing singers and their harmonies are breathtaking.
Welcome to the wonderful world of being a pentaholic, Daft Punk is a perfect introduction in part because it lines you up to them watch this very video to see that they really are as epic as they seem. Hallelujah are Bohemian Rhapsody are good options to do next, as is Sound of Silence which is after they swapped bass singers (Avi left them on good terms) Radioactive with Lindsey Sterling is also epic and shows off some of Kevin's other Talents (Kevin is the beatboxer)
Funny you said they are aliens. Shawn Stockman of Boyz 2 Men said the same thing when judging one of their Sing Off performances. All of those performances are available on RUclips. Home Free won the next season after PTX, also worth watching their performances.
The studio audio still does improve their work, of course. It's cleaner (in terms of unwanted background sounds), and perfectly mixed (i.e., the relative volumes of the different parts is exactly right), and some of those kinds of things. But they don't fundamentally need it in order to sing. They're one of the top four or five currently-active acapella singing grouips in the world right now, singing is their main thing, that's what they do. So yeah, they don't *need* software (like AutoTune) to sing for them. Although, I suspect they *might* have needed it for that one Cher song in the 90s Dance Medley (the one that's famous for abusing AutoTune to create a weird not-quite-human-voice effect). Can't prove that, as I haven't seen a live version of that piece. Not sure if they do it live. If you like PTX, you may also want to check out VoicePlay. Their stuff leans more to the theatrical side; where PTX is more focused on dance music, VP does a lot of Disney music, some broadway music, etc. Although both groups sometimes just do popular songs, or songs that they just like and want to do.
If you want to see another one-take- wonder (but this time with slightly better audio quality) check out PTX's cover of Gold by Kiisra. If you are not familiar with Gold by Kiiara, you should watch that first, pondering in your mind how pentatonix could possibly cover this.
I'm pretty sure Kevin has perfect pitch, I think everyone else has relative pitch (married to a composer for 21 years and I am still not great at explaining musical stuff whoops) which iirc is basically you can't ID the exact note but get close, and you can definitely do the correct intervals from each other. As a singer myself I feel like they started this a little lower than usual so there are a very few moments where because it's in a slightly different key, the harmonies are harder to get on the fly, but it still sounds AMAZING! You can tell from this that sometimes they bring a voice forward for balance (Avi's bass benefits from this the most, he's probably used to not needing to push it to be loud enough to be as audible as it needs to be). The live version of Hallelujah makes this even more clear because you can see them all standing there and yet in the last repeat of the chorus you hear Scott more clearly for the first half and Kirstie more clearly in the second, just like in the official video. Thanks for reacting to this, I'd missed it until someone mentioned it in the Love Again video. LOVE to see if you'd do their Love Again one too, it's so good, you can see how relaxed and fantastic they are!
Their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen, Amazing Grace, or Wizard of Ahhh's they do with Todrick Hall. Then try Watching Kevin Olusola (K.O., the beatboxer) do some of his solo covers of Down by Marion Hill, and Sign of the Times by Harry Styles.
I like how reactors who discover them in their pop vein, think they are aliens. Those who discover through their extensive XMas catalog tend to think them are angels. Their nineties dance medley (their bass left amicably and suggested his replacement who I swear he found to be a theater geek with Kirstie) but that is longer and Kevin (the beat boxer) I think goes longer.
Katesullivan4707, Avi did not suggest Matt as his replacement. Avi had absolutely nothing to do with finding or choosing Matt for the band. It is a false internet rumor that just won't go away. Matt auditioned, along with 40+ others. He won his place in the band based upon to this talent, work ethic, experience, personality, etc. He knew Ben Bram, yet he still had to audition.
The only post production is volume enhancement to make sure you hear the beatboxing and bass, because - as you can hear - bass and beats are too low with no microphone. You can hear them, just not with any power. The room they were in was NO help, just dead air with no acoustics. There's a reason Pentaholics highly recommend you listen to PTX videos with headphones, it's the only thing that really lets you appreciate just how powerful the bass and percussion are to what they do. BUT, this video DOES prove that what you hear in the videos isn't synthesized for effects, they sing everything the same, in the studio or live. dThe same thing happened with Bohemian Rhapsody, when people thought Mitch used a megaphone for the electric guitar solo - only to see them do it live without the megaphone and realize Mitch never actually used it, it was just a prop for the video, he mimics an electric guitar all by himself. The talent pool in PTX is deeper than almost any group you will listen to, there's literally nothing they can't do. Watch the Coffee in Bed video, if you want to hear how well they can recreate EDM sound. It's incredible how fast Kevin can beatbox, combined with Matt's perfect EDM basslines, the effect is amazing.
Maddy...you think their good, you ain't heard nothing yet !! Check out their LIVE performance "2016 PopSpring Concert" where they sing 4 of their own songs...it was sponsored by MTV, so the audio and video are terrific !! It's 15 minutes, but worth it and truly reflects their UBER talents !!
This is apparently recorded with a cell phone camera (and a slightly older one to boot), so the audio quality isn't the greatest - it's especially evident with the bass and beatboxing on the ends being at lower levels than the 3 singers in the middle. But it's still pretty darned amazing to hear just how practiced they are at performing this song live, given how complex the arrangement is!
The 2022 live performances on RUclips from their tour have a more balanced sound -- microphones were set up better! (Those have Matt rather than Avi doing bass.)
No mics, no mixing, no editing, no where to hide....They are just that good. The only one of them with perfect pitch is Kevin the beatboxer who also plays cello among other instruments. They have layered vocals on some songs but it is pretty rare. They generally do not put out anything that they cannot perform well in a live setting. They generally just mix, and add reverb. Some of their early videos, 'the couch videos' have no mixing at all. They just record on better equipment and pick the best take. Some of their evolution videos will blow your mind.....
Someone you might enjoy as well is Jared Halley. He's a one person acapella performance. Recommend the Twenty One Pilots medley or Imagine Dragons videos. Edit: this isn't a reaction request. Just something you might like.
No..., only Kevin is pitch perfect, and at this point in their career, they didn't yet know that. Kevin decided not too many months after this to take voice lessons. That's when they learned he was their pitch perfect member. The first few years of their being a band, Kevin really just focused on being the most awesome beat-boxer ever..., along with a little of his "Cello-Boxing" during the bands little mid-show intermissions. Now, as for their Harmonies..., I introduced their work to some elderly people I knew, ages between 81 and 93. Five of them to be exact, and they all had played in the Boston symphony for decades..., as in over 4 decades each, and they all said that they had never heard more perfect harmonies in their entire lives. I'd highly recommend watching their "Sing Off" competition stuff, that's where we first heard them makes themselves skip like a scratched record when they did their cover of "Video killed the radio star".
Actually, only Scott Hoying and Kevin Olusola have perfect pitch, however, they have been singing together for so long that they can pick up their critical tones from one another.
I really like all your emotional reactions, thank you. 😊 Do you already know Geoff Castellucci from VoicePlay? ruclips.net/video/fzlT80jQ3lo/видео.html
I can appreciate that they are talented but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this. Also, the original daft punk (I know they sampled too) are way funkier. This sounds forced. I wish you'd listen to any original daft punk song with a music video that you don't know of.
yesss Avi was amazing with the group but he has a fantastic solo career doing the music he wants to do and Matt is just as amazing with PTX...highly reccomend going down this rabbit hole...PLUS...just found out PTX is dropping a new original called "I Rise" on the eleventh of this month..i cant freaking wait i am super excited
Pick literally any song of theirs and you will be amazed. They are just so talented individually and blend so well together.

If you want to see another one-take- wonder (but this time with slightly better audio quality) check out PTX's cover of Gold by Kiisra. If you are not familiar with Gold by Kiiara, you should watch that first, pondering in your mind how pentatonix could possibly cover this.
💖
Recommend their original, Happy Now.
Oooh
I like how reactors who discover them in their pop vein, think they are aliens. Those who discover through their extensive XMas catalog tend to think them are angels.
Their nineties dance medley (their bass left amicably and suggested his replacement who I swear he found to be a theater geek with Kirstie) but that is longer and Kevin (the beat boxer) I think goes longer.
Oh! Interesting! Alien angels
So crazy!
The sound system isn't balancing well but you can still hear that they are on.
4:41 I scream every time
So amazing!!!
Oh awesome!
Avi singing bass and doing the swoosh sound at the same time!
So good!!!
Oooh please check out their recording of Gold by Kiiara. It’s a live recording and insanely good!
😯
fun thing: wasn't a studio, but a wardrobe...they couldn't afford a studio...made the original video with less than $300
AMAZING!!
If you REALLY want your mind blown, listen to the live (recorded from the audience, on a cell phone!) performance" 'Singapore Star Vista of 'Aha'...
Oooh
This is apparently recorded with a cell phone camera (and a slightly older one to boot), so the audio quality isn't the greatest - it's especially evident with the bass and beatboxing on the ends being at lower levels than the 3 singers in the middle. But it's still pretty darned amazing to hear just how practiced they are at performing this song live, given how complex the arrangement is!
Yessss
The 2022 live performances on RUclips from their tour have a more balanced sound -- microphones were set up better! (Those have Matt rather than Avi doing bass.)
Oooh
No, I've been under a rock. Where have you been ask this time?
You should try their cover of Kiarra’s ‘Gold’. Fire!!
Oooh
No mics, no mixing, no editing, no where to hide....They are just that good. The only one of them with perfect pitch is Kevin the beatboxer who also plays cello among other instruments.
They have layered vocals on some songs but it is pretty rare. They generally do not put out anything that they cannot perform well in a live setting.
They generally just mix, and add reverb. Some of their early videos, 'the couch videos' have no mixing at all. They just record on better equipment and pick the best take. Some of their evolution videos will blow your mind.....
So good!!!!
You should check out Avi Kaplans solo stuff so good! Would recommend Change on the rise or I'm only getting started. Please consider
Oooh!
Why does everyone misunderstand auto tune?
It doesn't make people good singers. It will tune a voice bad if the voice isn't in tune already.
Wait until you see them do Bohemian Rhapsody. Sir Brian May himself thought it was fantastic.
Oooihhh
Listen to GOLD..live performance..will amaze you..
Oooh
This is only the old AVI PTX. Three Grammys. None since he left.
Aww 😞
Hi its time to watch Filipino Singers, pls do watch "One Sweet Day" of Budakel (trio) & Katrina Velarde, expect the unexpected!
Oh!!
You have to listen to Gold. It's amazing.
Speaking of them being aliens... You should react to their version of Katy Perry's "Alien" from their time on the show The Song Off.
Someone you might enjoy as well is Jared Halley. He's a one person acapella performance. Recommend the Twenty One Pilots medley or Imagine Dragons videos.
Edit: this isn't a reaction request. Just something you might like.
💖💖💖
You should listen to PTX at the Hollywood Bowl 2022 ( My Heart With You)
Oooh 😍
Oh awesome!!
Very cool!
Welp, that's crazy.
Right!!!
Maybe the cell phone this was recorded on had autotune, but I doubt it.
Right! Lol definitely not
Next Wizard of Ahhh
💖💖💖
Their name doesn't have "The" on the front of it. Just "Pentatonix"
Maddy listen to AC/DC shot in the dark
Actually, only Scott Hoying and Kevin Olusola have perfect pitch, however, they have been singing together for so long that they can pick up their critical tones from one another.
🌸
One of my favorites is Run to You.

🤍🤍🤍
*Home Free* please. Their cover of *Brothers In Arms.*
Lovely
I really like all your emotional reactions, thank you. 😊
Do you already know Geoff Castellucci from VoicePlay?

I don’t!
React a voiceplay eles também são muitos bons, são um grupo acapella também
💖
I can appreciate that they are talented but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this. Also, the original daft punk (I know they sampled too) are way funkier. This sounds forced. I wish you'd listen to any original daft punk song with a music video that you don't know of.
Lol I am fairly certain I’ve heard and seen majority of daft punk music! 🌸🤍
You're a woman of culture then! :) I love most of their stuff in the middle of their career.
They don't record anything they can't sing live
So amazing!
This is an old recording. Avi has been gone since about 2019. Love the group!
Aww!
Actually, Avi left for personal reason in early 2017, Matt came in around late Sept. of 2017.
yesss Avi was amazing with the group but he has a fantastic solo career doing the music he wants to do and Matt is just as amazing with PTX...highly reccomend going down this rabbit hole...PLUS...just found out PTX is dropping a new original called "I Rise" on the eleventh of this month..i cant freaking wait i am super excited
