    at 11:24.......see.....first i select the captain by 40 C1=40 ways.....so now i have 39 students....from these 39....i will select my vice captain in 39 C1= 39 ways....so total no. of ways =39 * 40 which is 1560 ways.....does it work everytime both ways....(i.e) using permutation or combination?

      Yes, your method (though a bit tedious but logically correct) will work both in Permutation and Combination.

    What should we do if the question has indistinct circular permutations???

      n-1 factorial divided by 2, as the objects are indistinct clockwise and anticlockwise direction are same
