When Lorry Meets Car on a Cornish Road

- One of many encounters with oncoming traffic on the narrow Cornish roads (country lanes) during our summer holiday in North Cornwall, England; reversing for on-coming vehicles (including lorries) being a frequent event.
The clutch smells all the way here to Sweden xD
Yes, I was smelling it here in Ireland too. 😂
A lot stronger in Bristol
It was lingering round here in Warwickshire for a bit
I have a friend in Edinburgh that said he could smell it.
Couldn't breathe in devon
It’s amazing how people can’t reverse. I live in Cornwall and am so used to reversing on country lanes now
Not everyone lives in Cornwall mate
I mean, if you can’t reverse in a straight line or around a bend, you shouldn’t have passed your driving test. It isn’t rocket science. Has nothing to do with where you live
@@patricktate4782 that's no excuse for not being able to reverse!
Agreed. I live in the countryside and loads of folk struggle with single track lanes and reversing...
Agreed... amazing how many townies don't know the width of their vehicles, can't reverse to save their lives!
Watching his Mrs run up the road chasing him finished me! 🤣🤣🤣
Funny as fuck watching her try n run, sat here watching this feeling low and then suddenly I’m Creasing up 😂🥴💨
Pwhahaa 😂😂😂😂
Think that’s his mum but yeah 😂😂😂
He had his chance! I'd lock the doors and be off into the fields!!
She should have sat in the passenger seat when she had the chance.
The standard of driving is shocking, How the hell did she pass her test ?
She pay for DL
Ha assuming she past, that is.
He wasn’t much better at all she was no worse then he was they were both terrible
@@robertgoadby2683 I mean, at least he got there in the end... one clutch later
To be fair though. That road is terrible, its disgusting how roads are not improved nor maintained properly in the UK, I've seen better roads in 3rd world countries.
You cant really blame the driver nor the lorry driver for it, I feel sorry for the lorry, roads are way too small and narrow. It's a awkward situation, its enough to make people panic and make mistakes, you cant expect people to be perfect drivers, especially on roads like that.
I often find people to be hypocrites, every driver makes errors on the road from time to time, whether that's a minor or a major mistake, no ones perfect, you cant expect them to be. Maybe when you make a error on the road ill tell you to retake your test.
OMG what a drama. That lorry driver must have been laughing his arse off.
New title.... "lorry driver encounters a new species of special"
"None shall pass"
What?
"NONE SHALL PASS"
This is way funnier than it's supposed to be 😂 when she's runnin😂😂
As I've been bought up driving these lanes here's a tip. If someone is reversing for you do what the tanker driver did and give the reversing vehicle plenty of space, don't drive right up close, that way if they get a bit squiggly they have room to sort themselves out.
I live in Cornwall and I have no issue with reversing for another driver but when they come right up to your nose as you are reversing it not only rattles you but as you said, makes it so much harder to maneuver.
Yes
Absolutely, ended up needing 2 or 3 shunts to get my tiny Yaris out of little "bay" i'd tucked riiight into to not quite make enough room for an oncoming car (not too dissimilar to the video). Oncoming car starting inching forward, which certainly added to the pressure 🤣
Absolute agree. I’ve been in plenty of these situations where I’ve decided to be the more courteous one and reverse. The oncoming vehicles usually drive right up to me almost bonnet to bonnet. I find it extremely rude and distracting while I’m trying to manoeuvre.
Lol clearly you can’t drive a car either 😂
Everybody has to have 4x4 vehicles these days and the only time they go off road is when they park on the pavement to pick up kids from school
4x4 if it's in the countryside Chelsea tractor if it's in the city
Funny thing is, in my part of the country, the only people driving any form 4x4/Seriously Ugly Vehicle are the townies, who genuinely believe there is no alternative vehicle. Those of us who were born to the countryside find it quite amusing - We drive 'normal/average' cars, and the clowns drive about in tanks.
Ur a hard man on the clutch
Ready to cook dinner on it
Woman "oh no, a lorry"
Lorry Driver "oh no, a woman driver"
LOOOOOOOOOOL
😂
HAHA So true mate.
Spot on ! 🤣
Haha 😂😂
Car driver's licence should be revoked for that. Complete incompetence. Very patient lorry driver.
I encounter this daily down here in Cornwall they send me down roads all the time in an 18 tonner only to meet idiots like this lol
I have to say that long reverses are not part of the test so why?
I get your point, but not a requirement
The fact he should not have been there is ok?
@@paulcollyer801 If you can reverse into a bay and paralell park you can reverse down a road for any distance. In a car you get the gift of 3 mirrors and a view over your shoulders and out the back window heck on some cars you even get reverse cameras. All that Lorry has is wing mirrors and a million blindspots.
@@gravemind6536, I get what your saying, I’m an artic driver. However, I stand by what I say. Long reverses are not part of the test & not taught. Once you’ve passed your test, if you don’t continue reversing manoeuvres, you’ll lose that skill. Just like most other good skills one heck of a lot of drivers lose through bad practice and bad habit.
I, personally, taught all my charges long and fast reversing when teaching them to drive, on very rare occasions it’s your only escape from accident/collision. But it’s Not taught, and most likely never practiced
Fancy making her run after you..... did you tie a pasty on the front grill....
Lindsay Young 🤣🤣🤣 no it was a better pair of legs
Hahahahaaaa
That was fucking brilliant.
Too funny.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
That tanker does the same job as I do. Full marks for patience and given the couple time to reverse instead of chasing them up the lane. We get it day in day out. People cannot reverse, they are useless and avoid it, so never practice so never get any better
Fair play to you for reversing back for the lorry, alot of people in your situation would get pissed off and not move so I applaud you for acting the way you did
I drive a 16 ton lorry (Similar to the one in the vid, a DAF CF) for a building supplies. Every day Im down lanes like this and in this very situation. And to be fair most people are pretty good and understanding. Get a few gestures and face pulling. But these places that are tucked away down these little roads still need and have a right to their deliveries. When I first started the job I'd phone the yard and say the wagon wont go down such and such a road. Their reply was always 'Yes it will!' Ive had a few people refuse to go back. They change their tune when I point to my mirrors, both of which have usually been pushed in from the hedges. Im only going forwards. Or the tacho goes on rest, the keys go on the dash and the newspaper comes up! Of course its easy to be cocky when you know they can get you because there's only an inch between your doors and the hedges!
Jay, I know what you mean pal I’ve been in similar situations before where I’ve been stopped because a car driver thinks it’s easier to reverse and artic down a country lane than a car. I would sit there all day too because the funny thing is we get paid for it lol. But I’d much prefer to meet people like these guys than someone too arrogant to move.
@@_matty talking about the pay thing. My mates always ask how I sit in traffic all day. Easy, I'm getting payed too. But going back to arrogant people. The majority of abuse I get is when I have to occasionally partially block the road with the out riggers using the hiab. People have sent emails/photos to the likes of radio Cornwall traffic and even my company. My boss will show me a photo of me causing chaos and praise me for doing it correctly. Cones around me, high vis, hard hat etc then laugh...
@@jaymanleonard good on you for doing job correctly. Too many impatient people fussing if drive blocked for a few minutes. Bet they don't fuss though when they have a delivery! People need to chill out.
They can get pissed off all they want but they will have to move eventually because no way is the Lorry driver going to reverse back and potentially not even have a passing place to back into. Lorry driver will wait all day if they had too.
Unbelivable....smell of clutch
Shouldn’t be driving if you can’t reverse
Yep, it comes more naturally to some than others, but you are right, if someone can’t reverse then they shouldn’t be driving; reversing being one of the fundamental requirements of the driving test. However, when we were on holiday in Kernow (Cornwall) we came across quite a few Emmets (English Tourists) who struggled with manoeuvring and reversing (to one degree or another) on the narrow Cornish roads to allow passage of oncoming traffic.
@@NathanvilleOrgUk not just emmets, I bet there are Corns that can't reverse either.
The exercise will do her good. Learn to reverse or run up the road.....
Maybe so, although I'm sure most Cornish drivers are used to their own roads!
@@williamwellington8668; yep, Cornish roads are certainly challenging, whether on foot or driving!
Had a similar one here in Norway. 10 ton wagon + trailer met a mobile home on a narrow stretch (not as narrow as the Cornish lane) .. mobile home driver couldn't manage to reverse 75m on a dead straight road that was only a fraction too narrow to pass the truck. In the end the trucker stuck it in reverse, and backed up his wagon and trailer 250m without once having to stop to reallign.
It's a lot harder to reverse a car + caravan than a truck w trailer, esp due to the car being a lot shorter, and thus easier to turn the wrong way, let alone most cars w caravans are barely powerful enough to get moving forward never mind reversing... ever seen a Toyota RAV4 w Caravan? Maan, ridiculous
@@nekotranslates I said the truck met a mobile home, as in campervan, no trailer involved. The problem reversing a caravan is simply most people with one, can't.
Got to love the Sat nav. Turn around when possible
Levitate when possible.
I don't get how people find so hard to reverse. It's literally just like driving forward but u gotta look back or at your mirrors. I remember my first time I had to drive in reverse I was just 15 and it felt natural, the only thing different is that I found out that I prefer to look back than look at the mirror.
@@atlasnetwork7855 lol then you gotta get used to the mirrors
I drive an articuled lorry for a living and when I drive my car always try to reverse into the hardest space in the car park to keep my skill up.
Plan the route, go slow, always looking in the mirrors and I’m in first time.
The problem is most car motorist’s chose the easy option every time and their skills suffer.
Considering he could hardly find reverse in the first place, it should say something about his skillset.
@@Mark.Cleworth People often stare at me when parking my car because of the sheer speed and precision I park it with once you've driven with 40ft behind you driving your car becomes so easy. I have full cat D and drive buses I intend to do HGV at some point too. Will definitly be interesting when I learn how to drive an artic.
See that is what my husband says but you cant see the road behind you. Maybe its because im 5ft?
Been there many times when a HGV driver delivering kitchens for MFI. In the 90s.
The amounts people who couldn’t reverse and expected the lorry driver to reverse. You could only see the hedges in your mirrors.
Had a Pratt one day who wasn’t going to reverse. I had a 15 minute rest break . 🤔🙄🤣🤣
I remember delivering a trailer full of bird seed to a farm in Shrewsbury. It was tight. I had to turn one corner that was so tight I only saw a quarter of the trailer in my mirror. When I straightened up I looked in my nearside mirror and expected to see all three wheel arches gone but they were still there.
I don’t miss that stress or the stress of hearing the word FARM.
People just don't get it, its much easier for a car or van to back up than a great big Lorry with a 40ft trailer. I would literally wait all day they would have to move eventually.
I’ve always wanted to be a fly on the wall inside the car of someone making a complete hash of reversing, it’s exactly how I imagined!
You can feel the heat of her glowing face, the anxiety and stress levels went through the roof
My golden tip, don't bloody panic like this person lol.
Talk about self-trimming hedge 😂
I can smell that clutch down the phone
Due to the scheduling, there is a 'pinch point' on the road up from Upton Cross towards Redgate where two buses often meet - the only option is a 1/2 mile reverse for one of them, along a road just like this. No probs, just a bit of fun for the drivers.
Should you really hold a licence with such reversing skills? 🤔
As a lorry driver in Your picturesque country I've been there lots of times and I've seen worse. Always entertaining
I cant believe how many clueless people there are saying the lorry shouldn't have been on that road..unless you know where the man's delivery is you have no place saying it shouldn't be there
Haha, i had a very similar situation years ago near Paignton Devon. The police closed the A380 due to RTC and sent everyone down little single track lanes. I was driving a 32t rigid and absolutely filled the road.
At least she got some exercise. 🇬🇧👍
Grockles made a right meal of that
2:34 looked like a mini game where the yellow truck is trying to get the woman, as she is speedwalking to the camera
Crash Bandicoot BOULDERS! 😂
"I'm not the one that drove us into a ditch" 😂😂😂😂😂😂 lmfaooo the way she runs towards the car as it's backing up and her confused facial reaction like ohhh boy will they just might end up leaving me here🤔🤔
Lmaoooo😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That poor clutch!
Wait a minute is the lady who cant drive now giving him instructions 🤣🤣🤣
Your gonna have to pull forward a bit so I can actually get out the door 😂
I was driving a tanker down Cornish lanes (in many jobs. Milk, fuel and LPG) which you have to do, to service people in remote, rural areas. One time, a driver was zig zag going from one bank to another in reverse. Poor lady was so stressed, I had to leave my lorry and reverse her car for her!? Should be in the driving test, surely!!?
The clutch screaming 😱
She didn't get smaller no matter how far the car reversed away 😆
It is always a worry when a wide load is coming towards you on a country lane, especially when it is wearing a purple dress. 🤪
The only real victim here's the clutch.
this truck is a slasher villain
And THIS, people, is why you should take the train to Cornwall
How have either of you got a driving licence??!.. if you can't reverse in a straight line you shouldn't be on the road
Well, the dude did reverse in the end so what gives ?
@@jean-naymar602 but very poorly!
oh mate please get some practice reversing
Gen Hire and some clutch control. I had better driving skill at the age of 12 on my grandads ride on lawnmower this is diabolical
Well done mate, I had an experience as a learner driver where I was going up a hill, a lorry stopped suddenly and started moving back! I went into reverse backwards down a hill but was scary!
Unfortunately some of use lorry have no choice but to use these lanes for farm deliveries etc
Yes definitely. But we are always the bad guys for having to keep the country moving.
The wife is the star of this video
you 2 look like a perfect couple
For the people who think the clutch is screaming, its not. The driving may not be helping the clutch at all but the whining isn't that, the reverse gear is has straight cut teeth on the gears so they make that noise and its basically direct drive as the engine turns backwards according to the forward gear direction. Something like thst anyways
Take your time guys because us locals have got nothing better to do with our time than waiting all day for emmets who haven't got a bleddy clue how to reverse quickly.
Yep, I love your Kernow (Cornish) Roads, to me they really do add to the Outstanding Natural Beauty of the English Countryside; and are a real pleasure that should be cherished. Also, I do marvel at the locals skills in reversing. At least the experience has been good practice for my wife.
NathanvilleUK that was your wife driving ?
What a performance all they have to do is go backwards how do these people pass a test
Those who live in the country side understand things. If it was a city person it would have been one big argument there. Fair play there.
don't drive in the lanes if you cant drive
Passing places on single track roads are not effective when dealing with HGVs coming the other way unless on a motorcycle 🏍️😂
"Ah so that's what the R on the gearstick does!"
My god that poor car, both need to cut your licences up and throw them I the bin.
Hope the lorry driver thanked you
What a impressive driving skills we just saw
these people are a spectacle
She does this every day now and has lost 10 stone.🤣
Not sure what was more stressful, the lorry driver going down tight lanes or being in a car with the Wild Thornburys.
When these roads were built, the widest thing on them was a packhorse!
I guess we'll all be so grateful when the government has eliminated private cars - All these roads will be empty and overgrown with vegetation.
That woman trying to run😂
That was absolutely shocking
Why the high revs? jeeze, you were only reversing down a country lane not up a mountain.
the car sounds like a briggs and Stratton mower
Keep calm and carry on.
This was so hard to watch. If you’re not local really shouldn’t drive these roads
Hi , Great video.well done on the reverseing. Youve no chance down roads like that. Panic does set in especily when faced with a wagon. There no other choice but backwards, haha!!! Love it!!
wow is there any clutch left
Once you are moving you can take your foot off the clutch.
Do us all a favour and hand your license back, both of you 🙄
Why did the Woman in Purple Dress leave the vehicle?
I can smell the clutch from across the pond
Бабу высадили за то что не умеет ездить задним ходом?))) 😂
Very awkward situation but you did the right thing. Lorry has nowhere to go except forward so you have to back up to the next passing area.
Backup cameras are required by law (since 2018) for good reason. At least for the US, not sure about other countries
Love that accent my bird!
2:35 T2 coming at you
What the heck were they driving that made reversing look so hard? On hands might be different but on foots it's still the same principle.
Is it just me or was he burning the clutch that whoooole time...
Oh my god this is painful !!!
First of all you shouldn't drive if you want reverse. Seccond just avoid all tourist should avoid country lanes it just ruins everything. I live in Devon and people especially holiday makers think they can make a tractor in a trailer reverse (me) while they are in their little BMW. It's just a load of bollocks. Learn to drive
JESUS talk about riding the clutch!
i like the way she walks lmao.
I can smell the clutch through my iPad screen
at any point did you think to say hey sweetie jump in the car rather than running up the road lol
Why were you revving the bollocks off it doing 3 MPH in reverse?
That hat doesn't suit him @ 1:19 and the TomTom was a bit late, it waited till it was @ 2:40 before it said "Turn around" when he already had.
Loved how he made his mum get out and then left her to run after the car. Priceless.
And she has a driving license? 🤪
Yeah found it on the back of kellogs packet , was going to give it the kids but she seems to think it's real soo😅😅😅😅😅
Like watching a scene from the hills have eyes
Wait what who was that lady running towards the car like a seriel killer or some gohst outta the movies 😂😂😂
in our country it is prohibited to drive in reverse for more than 50meters
There's no option in a country of this size,we don't have a huge landmass to be able to build huge highways;also, these lanes lead to farms, they are not main roads to a city.
this is why that I can't understand why no 1 can still even till this day not be bothered to make these roads have 2 lanes its ridiculous especially with all of those massive fields meadows forests etc that hardly anyone ever uses
There are valid reasons why many Cornish roads can't be upgraded, environmental and historical e.g. many date back over 1,000 years and act as wildlife corridors - as briefly explained by Rick Steves (an American travel writer, author, activist, and television personality) in this video link: ruclips.net/video/-UG97ANqUIU/видео.html
this hurts me... the poor clutch
lol ride that clutch
A lot different from the video I saw earlier where a car refused to reverse back to a nearby passing point on lane little wider than this and, after an argument in which the woman passenger used multiple swear words, made the lorry reverse [blind] up a hill.
I would have none of it, if they want to sit there all day let them I will put my feet up and feel just fine knowing I'm getting paid and the stupid bitch causing problems isn't.
