I always love how K’mpec nods when Worf slaps Duras, he’s like “dude, you totally deserve that bro”
Also, Worf backhands him, which in Klingon culture is a challenge to a battle to the death.
He says so in DS9.

I like how Duras lowers his head afterwards like he is admitting he is the son of a traitor.

Dax was right, an Empire so steeped in hypocrisy did not deserve to exist.

Well that is ironically the story arc of the Empire. You'll have to wait for Martok for the reforms and return to meritocracy over corrupt aristocracy.
I'd like to think between Martok and the new Kahless (and Worf's influence as well) the Klingons would find their way again.
@@Darthvegeta8000 It kind of reminds me of the Kingdom of Korea during the late 1500's, which was suppose to be an enlightened meritocracy due to the Confucius ideals, but it was corrupt at the core.
Funny thing is, if we go by Star Trek Online's Pseudo-Canon (due to how Star Trek is, the online game technically has a sense of canon, filling in story and linking the series together one way or another while also picking up where they all left off) The Klingon Empire does eventually return to a similar state of mind where honor is above politics, especially when looking at individuals like Martok. During a point in game where time travel is involved to win a war, Martok (if I recall, might of been a different well known klingon) changes their plan due to the Iconians, the current enemy, being a peaceful group that acts much like Starfleet, not warlike in nature, their defenses are advanced but they seek peace rather than war while maintaining a form of prime directive. In the end instead of killing off the escaped Iconians he instead wishes to save them to attempt to prevent the war, and though ultimately it was in a way unsuccessful, it was a telltale sign of honor that even the TOS Klingons lacked, he did not want to fight a foe who was not outright looking for conflict.
This may be the moment Patrick Stewart goes full Shakespeare. Also, probably Michael Dorn's favorite episode because he gets to tell Stewart to shut up.
Worf now knows what Jean-luc feels when he tells Wesley to shut up.

I love how Picard, despite being his commanding officer in the starfleet, is completely understanding of their customs, and knows he needs to stop talking in this situation when Warf yells at him.
He just displays this constant level head and cultural understanding, it's why he's my personal favorite captain.
Until KURTZMAN decided to destroy everything good abou him in that “show”. “Picard” season 1 and 2.

@@emperorconstantine1.361 Picard isn't canon. They even changed the uniforms, Data's look and a bunch of other stuff because they don't hold the right to certain things and thus have to be sure things like costumes differ more than an established percentage to avoid potential legal issues.

She had bigger balls then most men....of any species to say that to the leader of most likely the second most powerful interplanetary nation in the Alpha/Beta Quadrants. Both the Klingons and Romulans are considered Alpha Quadrant powers but they also have considerable holdings in the Beta Quadrant too as well as their their homeworlds in the Beta Quadrant, Q'onos(Kronos) and Romulus respectively.
Worf has more honor than the entire Klingon Council.
That's usually how it works the guy on the lowest rung of the totem pole always has to hold shovel while the guys up-top they are the voice of reason and treason

Klingons like Worf are the only reason the empire works as it exists. The oppressed have to shine through the mud of the upper classes to bring glory to the whole race, and through the prowess of their species they succeed
Honestly, I attribute that to Worf not being as tested as the council. Day to day operations would likely require some flexibility.
The Duras family are powerful, and finding them guilty of this would tear the Empire apart. None of us are going to mention, or point out, the worrying fact that this 'powerful family' may be in the pocket of the Romulans though.
and that was the OTHER problem .... although we don't know if Duras himself would have allied with the Romulans, like his sisters did after Worf ended him.

I just wanted to see Picard go, "Oh, my communicator badge was going the entire time you've been plotting, and our Chief Engineer has broadcast it to the whole of the planet/Empire. If truth can kill a thing, then it deserves to die."
Truth would have killed several million innocent Klingons, as well as many, many people of surrounding worlds. I'd argue they wouldn't deserve to die.

That the 'important family' wouldn't do the right thing when faced with the weight of truth behind it. It would only come to millions dying if they all clung to the lie. Now imagine if you had that same anger in real life as our nation's "leaders' do the same and worse every single day.
Yea but as the video mentioned, he accepted it. In fact, openly embraced it really, all for the empire. Dax later poured cold water on his face at how Worf was really no better than the corrupt empire itself by supporting such actions.
Sad to say, similar is happening here in The 🇺🇸 as we speak. Trump, MAGA, ✝️ Nationalism, Far Right to name a few.
Through slow it seems to happen, the likes of Duras DO reap what they sow.

The truth revealed, the political treachery, and then, Picard going from cha'DIch to full blown Captain of the Enterprise once he realizes that the Council would not follow its own set of rules, Worf showing how much honor he has despite it all...
I have to say, this is amazing Trek.
I love the aspect when Picard decides to use his power as a Federation officer and ally to the Klingon Empire to say he won't turn over a fellow citizen over a fake accusation. He's throwing the gauntlet and is willing to go to great lengths for his friend and what he believes. Who could say anything against it ? He went by their rules, their system and they cheated, so he then uses his leverage. Great leadership !
From that throwing of the Gauntlet, Picard Proved that he and Worf were more Klingon than anyone else in that room.

K'mpec is honestly one of my favorite characters even though he was only in two episodes. Charles Cooper played him masterfully.

@@michaelscott5653Wise and world weary. Through his portrayal you could feel this wasn't the first such sacrifice of a good warrior he had made for the sake of the empire. The way he lights up when discommendation is mentioned was brilliant.
"I speak now as the captain of the USS Enterprise and Worf's commanding officer! You will not execute a member of my crew!"
Such a bad ass scene. Stewart is fantastic and the look on Worf's face when he says it, "now y'all fucked up."
That approving nod after Worf slaps him. That was perfect.
My favorite part.
If you look at Duras, it kind of looks like he was expecting it like that's just how you politely end conversations with people you dislike in the Empire.

@@imofage3947 That isn't irony. That is a failure of an intended purpose. Irony is when a result is deliberately and completely contrary to what is expected to happen. The civil war wasn't stopped, just postponed. Nobody expected the Duras family to stop trying to be power hungry assholes, suddenly develop a sense of real duty and honor, and become good leaders.That would have been irony. It would have been ironic had Duras really been a great and honest leader of the Empire despite the expectations of others.
Trying to seize power through violence AGAIN isn't ironic, nor is a weak council allowing such a thing to happen.
It's like Napoleon. It wasn't ironic that he raised another army after being exiled instead of executed or imprisoned. It was just stupid to have thought he WOULDN'T do such a thing.
Some points here: Worf learns that the Klingon ideal is just that, an ideal the council is corrupt and honorless.
Duras is protected to stop a civil war, but a few years later civil war erupts anyway.
might be important to mention that duras is also responsible for the civil war that erupts a few years later. Duras has brought nothing but shame to himself, to his allies, to the klingon race.

Well, that's mainly because Duras had killed K'heylar and didn't realize that she'd had a child fathered by Worf and Worf had Avenged her death by killing Duras
And a few years after this, the Federation and the Klingons go to war over something else. One suspects the alliance wasn't as strong during the TNG era as we liked to think.

I'm sure the reason K'mpec later chose Picard as Arbitrator of Succession was in some way based on how Picard spoke to him here considering how he looks him straight in the eyes and unleashes his anger in full Shakespearean glory, not to mention how he stood by Worf as his protector and instantly went back to that role when Worf told him to be silent.

@@timmorris2048 Duras knew he'd won, and that this slight to his honor would never be spoken of or even acknowledged. He was willing to accept the strike to achieve his goal, and possibly on some level knew he deserved it. Taking the hit without complaint was probably the single most honorable thing Duras ever did.

Loved K'mpec's little nod there, like "Yeah, that's how I would have slapped Duras too."
K'mpec hated Duras and wanted to kill him or at least slap him but he wasn't allowed to do so as it would trigger a civil war so he liked seeing Worf slap Duras in the face hard.
The fact that Duras resorted to slowly poisoning K'mpec to death instead of challenging him head on shows how cowardly Duras was and how afraid he was of K'mpec.
A shame we had to wait until Martok for the Empire to have good leadership 😟
Kenpek was in a bad spot though. It was that or civil war. By the time Martok came around the underlying issues that made that a problem had been taken care of, or at least lessoned to the point the Empire wouldn't fracture. And it wasn't even civil war that was the issue, but the possibility of a Klingon who would ally with the likes of the Romulans and use their techniques coming into power that was the problem. That would have destroyed the very heart of what the Klingons believed. So it was the best choice from a list of nothing but bad options.
I still think old crazy eyes, Gowron, was a good Klingon. The problem started to occur when they wrote his character to be more concerned over politics then the state of the Empire. That was poor writing, in my opinion. It could have been a golden age, with Gowron as the leader, and Martok as the General. Both had their roles, and Martok's was in battle and leading forces. Gowron was perfect as the politician who made the decisions overall, but Martok led the troops.
@@heartattackjack9349 DS9 did a lot of things right and really well, but they really did Gowron a huge disservice by turning him into what they did. I was very disappointed.
@@heartattackjack9349 the thing was Gowron was always a political animal governed by self interest. He tried bribing K'helar with a seat on the council even before he was selected to be the next chancellor so she would advise picard to rule in his favor. He recognized the truth of worf's family being innocent of treason, yet decided not to clear mogh's name until worf helped him. He also oversaw a massive rewriting of klingon history. Disregarding the risk his allies assumed for his sake because it was politically inconvenient for him. Granted DS9 amplified the worst of those traits, but in a lot of ways he wasn't much better than Duras or K'mpec.
Martok was the Chancellor that lauded in a renaissance of the Empire.
But Kem'pec or however it was spelled again was a brilliant statesman/politician. Keeping the corrupt upper stratus of the Empire together.
I really like him. A character with diplomatic / political talents that at least for a bit put Picard checkmate. And he's the Federation Captain that really maxed out his diplomatic/char skill ;)
Seriously subtle writing in TNG... 'Fat' is associated with corruption, Those who eat but dont work to burn it off kind of thing! the reason the woman keeps calling him fat, is shes calling him corrupt... She is loyal to the house of Moag, and she is a perfect example of an Honourable Non-Warrior Klingon!

Best line for the whole NG universe. I never understood why the Klingon High Counsel would cover for a clan/family’s disgrace. They knew it would only delay the inevitable civil war that was coming. The counsel just wanted someone else to deal with it; covering it up only disgraced themselves. Picard’s quote should have been a stab through both hearts of any Klingon who heard it.
The Klingons had gotten to a point where family name and power and influence had gotten all mixed up with honour. They were all on the inside and accepted it as reality. Worf, as an outsider, saw how bullshit that was.

That subtle change in Worf's stance and expression when Picard says he now speaks as the Captain. Basically says "aw shit, here we go."

If the Empire had honor, then upholding one family's legitimate honor would not destroy it. An Empire without justice is no Empire worth preserving.
Empires aren't just logos and councils. They are the elders and children and livelihoods that are held and protected by these things. This council is filthy, but Worf absolutely made the right choice in this moment.

Despite everything, at this point, Worf doesn't know that Duras is an honorless cur who will 1) Poison k'mpec, 2) murder his mate, 3) attempt to sell out the alliance with the federation to the Romulans, 4) his survivors will start a civil war to install an unblooded child of questionable origin to the high council. As for questions of justice, based on what is known right now, killing Duras for the actions of his father could not be called justice by us or Picard either. While a Klingon might hold differently (and do) the term Justice here is definitely interesting. Worf made the most just decision. He saved his brother, he saved the empire, he saved himself, he made it where the Enterprise had a stake in this deal, and he let Duras save face. In that moment, it was the best deal. Not later, not by a long shot
The empire may have ice, but if it is not just, the empire will melt.

It's at this moment that K'mpec realised that Picard might be useful if Duras got out of control.

Damn I forgot how badass Worf really is, this episode sure as hell reminded me. He has some of the most quotable moments in TNG too. I still say "a Warrior's drink" all the time.

I love how Worf doesn't even dignify Duras with a decent punch--just a slap. And even that cows the traitor because he knows the only reason he's walking out of there is because of politics, not power.

2:45 there's a great movement here, as soon as Picard says he speaks as Word's commanding officer, his entire stance changes, he steps back, less agressive, standing to attention. God damn Dorn is a great actor even just by moving

There are plenty of smart shows out there but they won’t feel the same as TNG because they don’t hit the same nostalgic buttons for you. Nostalgia is what makes people say “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”.

In TNG the sons of traitors tended to be without honor themselves. It would have been interesting to write a story where the son of a traitor was actually honorable, thereby exposing the problem with the Klingons' honor system. We have our own honor systems on earth that are just as problematic. No one should feel shame for someone else's actions, regardless of bloodlines. We should only feel pride or shame for our own actions and decisions.
And only accept responsibility for our own actions.

I like rewatching this knowing what happens near the end of the Dominion War. Worf becomes Chancellor for the briefest moment before giving the cloak over to Martok.

When I first watched Generations, I didn't know about this whole Duras arc. Man, watching Duras die in Reunion, the sisters defeated in Redemption, and that Bird of Prey exploding in Generations, and then Word killing Gowron on DS9 makes watching this so much more satisfying. Haters gonna hate, but give it time and you'll get to put them in their place
Worf didn't half get dealt a crap tonne of bad hands in both shows.
First the loss of Tasha.
K'ehlar refuses his hand in marriage then hid a son from him. Then left Worf too look after him alone when she very selfishly got herself murdered.
Accepts Disscommendation for another Klingons crime, falsely admitting to the worst possible thing for a true Klingon, Dishonor.
Gets the chance to restore his honor when Gowron comes to power and has to fight a civil war (The same war Worfs discommendation was supposed to prevent).
Quickly loses all said honor, power and lands after siding with the Federation when The Klingons invade Cardassia based on little evidence.
Has a romance with Deanna teased in Season 7 of TNG only for it to be abandoned in the movies.
Learns his father may still be alive, only for that to be wrong.
Dax's Death.
Seeing a grown up Alexander after so many years who seemingly hated him.
Kurn had his memory erased after trying to kill himself.
Fortunately things improve for him once he meets General Martok. But it has been a long road, getting from there to here.
Probably one of the greatest moments in TNG in my opinion. Worf effectively gets to stand for what honor really means.
I just love how Picard is making the argument and he's finally had enough of K'mpec. "I SPEAK NOW AS THE CAPTAIN OF THE USS ENTERPRISE AND LIEUTENANT WORF'S COMMANDING OFFICER." He just exudes command presence and honor. This scene is probably why K'mpec later tricks Picard into being the Arbiter of Succession. He has trust in Picard that Picard is an honorable man and will work to find who killed K'mpec and will help the Klingon Empire get a new leader.
The Klingon are shown frequently to respect Picard even if they don’t like him.
I just realized that Worf kit Duras with the back of his hand. This is actually a challenge to fight to the death. It shows how low Duras has sunk in the Klingon code of honor for Worf to able to do that to him and then just grin in his face.
What is so great about the Duras slap is that Duras has to take it. He cannot return the blow. So secretly he has to live his life knowing that he was disrespected by a man who is shunned by society and cannot do a think about it.
Worf:The Cha'lich will be silent.
Word's thoughts:I get to deny Captain Picard for once. That felt good.
One of my favorite episodes as it explores klingon politics. And Worf shows why he is the most honorable there is
He is the truest of Klingons. No wonder Martok and the clone of Kahless himself liked him so much. Picard must have been dying inside to see Worf willingly throw himself on the chopping block.
Worf: *makes with the pimp hand of honor on Duras's face*
Worf: Now, I am ready.
Absolutely hilarious yet bad ass moment. Worf realized he may not get another chance and made sure his disrespect was shown.
Kimpec was like "I like this guy"
This episode begins the tradition of Worf and his family getting shafted "for the good of the Empire".
Worf's growth arc throughout the show is so damn good. He molded the values of both the klingon and the federation into his own. By DS9 he's one of the wisest characters in the show from a hot headed buffoon in TNG season 1.
Worf’s act here saved the empire a for a few more years. He was truly the best thing that happened to the Klingon empire.
I dunno, that gave the Duras family time to scheme and likely made the impending civil war even worse. Corrupt leadership starts wars of convenience, the truth should have come to light immediately, lives would have been saved and the Klingon empire could have had a headstart at cleaning itself up.
Tell the truth, then assume whatever happens was the best thing that could have happened given the situation.
@@Teth47 they did but Worf was instrumental in pushing back impending Civil War, even later getting rid of a bad Emperor for a better on to take his place. The empire didn’t deserve the loyalty he gave them.
@@NPCSingularity I'm saying that pushing it back was a mistake. Duras started the civil war with their betrayal at Khitomer, that just hadn't become apparent yet to anyone but them, so they had the element of surprise, and more time to plan before the first shot rang out.

It would have been hilarious if they had recorded that conversation and played it for the world to hear.
I think any other captain but Picard would have at least threatened it. Definitely Janeway and Sisko. Kirk might have gone straight from threat to play.

One thing I just noticed - in DS9, when Worf is trying to teach them how to behave like Klingons for the mission to find the Changeling on the High Council, he says something about striking someone with the back of your hand. Worf challenged Duras to a battle to the death then. I don't remember if that comes up later, but I just remembered it.
Yes worf did challenge him... when duras dropped his head and looked at the ground he backed down from the challenge. Which has me thinking maybe that's why kimpek nodded like he did. A battle to the death between the two could have solved everything.
@@TRGFBC Duras is a different animal altogether from Worf and K'mpec. He has little or no sense of honor, but he also knows that once's they've all agreed to it, he's already won. The only ones that know what happened are there in the room and they're all sworn to secrecy. He sees no reason to fight back and risk death to save face to people more honorable than him that won't talk about it anyway.
It’s moments like this that make it soooooo hard to say whether Star Wars or Star Trek is more favored in my heart. The amount of love and passion put in these two series in so many different ways by the writers, actors, and fans is so gratifying and life changing in so many ways for so many people.
You must have a big heart if you can fit so many Stars within ;)

Picard: goes in for the kill with his words before drawing a line in the sand neither side wants to test.
Archer: starts some boring and confusing story to distract everyone from Reed sneaking up behind to capture them both.
Janeway: makes a brief speech before beaming her and Worf away and running like hell, phasers blasting.
Kirk: same as Archer, only Spock is doing the talking and Kirk is the one sneaking up behind to capture the chancellor/Kurn
Sisko: staring at Kim'pec "So you have chosen... death..."
Sisko would
- take out the recorder from his pockets
- mention the dead man's switch mechanism that would broadcast everything said there across Qonos
- demand Worf's honor to be restored
- NOT ENOUGH
- a seat on the council for Kurn
- STILL NOT ENOUGH
- Duras' head on a plate
- Now we are starting to understand each other
Great character descriptions, I agree with most.. except with Janeway, she might give an impressoin of running away, but always has a backup plan to come back with some power play or forcing a stalemate situation.
Won't ever be spoken of again, funny how that works when Worf tells Gowron lol.
Duras was already dead, so the dishonor would be known to the victor and new leader of the Empire.
@@Zoras88 not so, Gowron refused to change Worf's status, telling him he had already accepted discommendation. When Worf told him that it was Duras family that was the traitor, Gowron had no idea and was surprised the Klingon High Council was part of the cover up.
@@jeffburnham6611 That's because Duras's family still had it's roots int eh empire even after his death. What I meant was that Worf told Gowron because the only two people who were there to hear it were already dead so he told the new head of the Empire of why to try to alleviate the burden of the sentence.
He didn't tell Gowron he didn't have the right to know.
@@davidlewis5312 What are you talking about? Of course Worf told Gowron. It was right after he got vengeance on Duras for killing his mate. Gowron was going to be beamed back to his ship when he told the big-eyed warrior the truth about the Kitomer attack.

if I was Picard, my communicator is recording the entire conversation and video so if the council ever reneges on the treaty, the entire empire is destroyed without firing one phaser
Yeah let me stop you right there for a minute. As your admiral of the federation you will not be recording it or making that public no matter what. We just came back from the war with the cards and we're dealing with the Borg. You will let the Klingons fight their own battles because we're not going to interfere because this is a clear violation of the Prime directives
@@attiepollard7847 OP mentioned "in case the council reneged on the treaty", so they probably mean the treaty of peace between the Federation and the Klingon empire. Prime directive would have nothing to do in that situation since it would be a war between two warp-capable species.
@@abletodoit3051 did you not see an episodes of when it came to the Klingon civil war and also the episode on DS9 when admiral jakote told sisko that he cannot interfere in the affairs of bajor because they had a civil conflict. The prime directive does cover civil matters in a culture that the federation cannot interfere in.

Its the very nature of it..
More, the corruption of concentrated power. Politics is in anything we do in a large interconnected society but only some wield political power. I dont have a solid ideology but I do find it best that the decentralization of power through the expansion of human rights and political agency to as many as possible is desirable. Also that there is no way to seperate politics from economics, they are bound together.
Borg don't have politics or corruption, the perfect system.

An episode so rich in shakespearian intrigue! This is Star Trek at its best.
Out of all Star Trek characters, Worf had the most flushed out story and arch. And I thnk it really started here, and opened the door for so many stories involving the Klingon Empire.
You could tell k'mpec loved it when worf slapped duras

Duras: “But we’re cool now, right? After that slap we're even?”
Worf: “Nah, I think we’ll pick this up again some other time.”
Worf gets his ass kicked more than any other TNG character but that slap is the most badass of them all.
Later in DS9 we learn that the back handed strike used by Worf in this scene is actually a challenge to a fight to the death, it was a bold move when he'd just made himself more valuable alive than dead.
Worf also personally beats up and kills more people than any other ST character, outside of the Original Series.
@@victorpradha9946 Yes he does. One time later in the series when an alien telepath who mind raped Troi was attacking her and he tried to flee, Worf took him out with a single strike and you could tell that Worf was angry and wanted to kill the offender for his crimes.

Charles Cooper (K'Mpec) was 62 when he played this part and is the father of well known actor Chris Cooper. He had played in many westerns on TV during their heyday in the 1950's. He was not in good health when they brought him back a few years later to play K'Mpec again in Reunion. Reports were that he was very sick when he last played K'Mpec but didn't want to miss the role. That is why his eyes look so wet and teary in Reunion. He passed away 6 years later. As I always say, good actors can act even with facial appliances on. His reaction to being told he was still fat was clear to anyone watching the scene. This little sub-plot in an intense scene is a good dramatic writing insert.
he looked weakand in Reunion. I can actualy see him breathing taking a nap while his final death ceremony :)
He passed away in 2013, 10 years ago.
1:29 - 1:39 I love how Kempec spoke about how the High Council was more concerned with civil war than upholding honor. Personally, I think that the civil war should have started here instead of when Gowron was to be installed as the new chancellor. True Klingons that hold honor above all should have never tolerated the cancer that was the family of Duras to flourish. I understand Worf's desire to preserve the Empire but I don't agree with him accepting discommendation because it allowed Duras to continue his plans to maneuver himself to become Kempec's successor. Duras probably would have succeeded if he hadn't been stupid enough to kill Kaylar.
Exactly. If the majority of Klingon's value honour above anything - they should all have been chomping to rip the Duras family apart for their treachery. Just because the family is powerful, who would side with them or serve under them when you know their power is in part based on the hidden hand of support that reaches out from the Romulan Empire?
If their family grabs the Chancellorship then surely they are just puppet rulers, who would more often than not do the bidding of their Romulan supporters - no rational honour bound Klingon would ever accept that!!

I love that Worf hit him, with the left hand. In biblical times a left handed slap was worse than a punch. This is partly due to there being no toilet paper and you used the left hand, to clean yourself. Hence why the dominant hand throughout the world is right handed, the left hand is often called the "dirty hand", "unclean hand" or "devils hand". Nobody wanted to be slapped with the dirty hand, this is actually where "Turn the other cheek" actually comes from. You turn to face your accuser, so they can properly slap or punch you with a right or clean hand. I like to think the Klingons had a similar way, though i might be overthinking it

Actually it does come up a bit in a DS9 episode where Worf is training the crew to pretend to be Klingons. A punch is just the start of a friendly brawl. A backhand is a challenge to a fight to the death.

When I first saw this episode broadcast in it's original airing, they had neglected to add the "slap" sound effect, so when Worf hit Duras it was silent. Very weird...

That backhand hit so hard that every ancestor of Duras felt it. Worf's hand hit Warp 10 for a second there.
Me being blamed for everything in exectance going wrong for the 40th time this month by my Mandalorian Clan, Klingon Clan, and my whole family be like:
"A house whose foundation is built upon lies CANNOT STAND"...and eventually the Klingon Empire did indeed crumble...in less than a year later, K'mpec was assassinated by Duras and shortly there after his surviving family plunged the Empire into civil war!"
