In high summer, the sunshine in New Zealand is really strong, because Earth's orbit takes it closer to the sun during the southern summer than during the northern summer. There is less pollution in the southern-hemisphere to block the UV rays. The sun's burning strength is measured by the UV index
Though the earth is closer to the sun during spring and autumn not during summer and winter. The reason why the southern and northern hemisphere experience summers and winters are because of the axial tilt that makes it so the sun reaches higher up on the sky and stay up for a longer period resulting in a higher energy input warming up the atmosphere during the day. Though the earth is closer to the sun during the southern hemisphere summer than during the northern hemisphere summer since the sun is not perfectly centred in the earth's orbit though not as close as it is during the spring and autumn. The lesser amount of pollution and ozone do also make the sun stronger in the southern hemisphere.
In the States we call that drip coffee. The coffee filters are the right method. Some machines have a washable metal filter. The grounds should not be as fine as espresso and not as course as plunger (French press) coffee. I think getting the grind right will fix everything. And I agree ditch the milk and go black. But that is almost sacraliacrilidge in NZ. Only place I've found that has more dairy than Wisconsin, USA (the cheesehead state).
It’s the grind size. Espresso coffee is ground fine or super fine because it’s for pushing hot steam through. Plunger (french press) or drip coffee grounds are more course. You could take it to a coffee shop and see if they’ll grind different batches for you at various grind settings. But I bet you’ll settle in on medium to medium-coarse.
The sun is the same here in Tasmania, I always explain it to the Aus mainlanders as the sun/heat on the mainland is like an oven, and the sun in Tas is like a grill. So direct and burns easy
Yeah, so spend 9 years in the UK and not once did I use sunscreen, even when going hiking with my cuzzie in the middle of summer. Six hours in the sun and all I got was a little colour at the end of the day, but not sunburn. Came back to NZ, spent 20 minutes early December in the sun painting the window frame and had to cover up, coz I could feel the intensity of the sun and 10 minutes later, I would have started burning. I've also noticed you need darker sunnies here than in the UK - need darker sunnies in the US as well, so maybe it's just Blighty that's dull, haha!
Agreed - that or the Presso (much more expensive but IMHO better quality engineering). So much better than the rubbish pod coffee machines that have become so popular and with lots of added benefits: 1) use whatever coffee you want, so not locked into a supplier, 2) no pods to throw away, 3) so long as you can boil water you can use them anywhere, even if there's no electricity.
Scaffolding for 8' in the air. You gotta love bureaucracy! OH&S suck the life out of work sometimes. Great work Scott. I'm over there next December, I'll have to check out what project you're working on (I'll bring the coffee!).
Merry Christmas Scott, the team and your families. Your videos have been such a positive thing in what has been a worldwide sh*tty year! Keep them coming guys! Best wishes from South West France, Tony and Deb
It's 4am, I'm sitting here with some pretty fiery squirts after a large boxing day and for 13:37 I didn't want to end it all. I am truly, truly grateful to you and the team at SBC. Merry days fellas.
Or here in California - with our earthquakes, sheer is important. That said, apparently in Texas they use that cardboard sheer + wrap stuff.... Jordan Smith did a video about it here ruclips.net/video/uTVeDKK0cDA/видео.html
I know ah. Im from New Zealand but live in Northern California and it makes me uneasy to see no sheathing. But I know they are doing a good job by thr standards.
Where i live in northern europe we dont sheet the outside either, we sheet on the inside with osb + plasterboard I cant for the life of me understand why that isnt done in the USA, its a pain in the ass to hang stuff on drywall, having to find studs and dealing with molly fastners
I am no Carpenter, so I don’t know building details, but we have a lot of powerful Seismic activity here in New Zealand and the houses don’t fall down. This particular house is around 100 years old and is still standing. Also the weather is very temperate, so sheathing is not needed for temperature reasons.
I've always thought about this and I'm glad you actually pointed it out in a video. Perihelion a term for the time where the Earth is closest to the sun. This occurs in January usually around the beginning of the month. During perihelion the earth is about 3 million miles closer to the sun than it is during aphelion (furthest from the sun). Strictly considering the inverse square nature of intensity. The suns in intensity is about 6.9% greater for the southern hemisphere Summers than the northern hemisphere summers. Obviously, the highest temperatures recorded almost every year are in California, northern hemisphere. Clearly our atmospheric weather systems play the major role here, however you are technically correct in saying the sun is more intense!
@Phelebas In New Zealand if a builder is working on a roof they must have fall protection, and any scaffold over 4m must be erected by a competent (ticketed) person.
love your work and vids Scott...always informative and highly entertaining...from a kiwi builder in Auckland, (and i'm still trying to spot your teal striped van on the road lol 😊)
The sun is also closer to the earth during the Southern summer. The light is a lot brighter here too. I can tell a video is from NZ very quickly by how bright it is and you can see that in this one. You can tell an Aussie video as it has similar light but a deeper blue sky.
It's funny that you mention the intensity of the sun. When I was on holiday in San Francisco, the sun felt quite 'mild' so I stayed in it longer and got sunburnt. The intensity is very different.
I’ve had that coffee machine for about 10 months, fill the water right up to the top mark and using the supplied scoop put in one scoop of course ground coffee 👌
Get yourself an aeropress coffee maker, they are brilliant. Completely manual, only takes a couple of minutes to make fresh coffee and the best bit is that it takes seconds to clean. All you need is a kettle for the hot water.
I remember leaving a comment last year around this time about how jealous I was about the weather in NZ. Let's make that an annual tradition. Right now here in Sweden it's at 0 degrees and rain, which freezes to ice when it hits the asphalt, combine with some gusty winds and not even my dog wants to go outside...
you should come to arizona if you come to the states, that's an intense sun. when im up sheering the roof in summers ill go through 3-4 gallons of water
COFFEE SOLUTION You buy coffee in bags. They have a round shape and fit perfectly in that coffee maker. Then you can remove it like a tebag. So water flows through but doesn't take the coffee grounds for a ride inside the machine. My bro had a coffee maker with those type of bags.
Try the ALDI espresso coffee machine Scott, very tasty coffee pods in different strength variety and cost of each pod = AUD$ 0.37 . Initial cost with the milk frothing kettle is at around AUD$ 120.00. That’s what I have myself on site and everyone loves that coffee. Merry Christmas to all of you guys
You need to try a medium grind probably. Plunger coffee is meant to sit in the water so it doesn’t need to me ground much and espresso is meant to be pressurized so it need to be fine. Looks for a pour over coffee
G, day Scott and team, * they use the flashing tape in the U.S Zip system. TX high temperatures. * I am wondering why you separate the colour bond sheets before positioning? * Christmas coffee, ☕ 2021 Scott Brown carpentry
Scott, if expresso on-the-go is what you want, I recommend Minipresso. It only makes one single shot at a time but it's real espresso, made with pressure. You should look it up. Drip coffee has always been too watery for me too.
What suspense! It’s only the 26th here. Will you make it? Probably! Thanks for the video. Also appreciate “get the framing right, all else follows.” Not “let the next guy fix it” or just “fix it later”.

these two people are from the Philippines, they are my countrymen, proud of them to be part of Scott's video on this episode.
Explains why they were wearing jackets and hoodies while the kiwis were in t shirts!
They seemed like they'd be good fun to have around on site!
By the time I hear one of them ask if he's a vlogger, I knew they are Pinoys. Ayos, hehe

Good point, there is also the factor of the latitude. Here in Tasmania I experience the exact same phenomena as Scott.
Melbourne is same latitude as Auckland, can't speak for my tassie friends but can confirm uv index...

Just take a nespresso machine with you to site - that is what we have on our renovation project. Excellent coffee, small machine.
Merry Christmas to you and yours and the rest of the boy's and their, s, love from England xxx
For the coffee you need to use paper coffee pads. In Belgium it’s called Senseo...

+1 for this. I accidentally ordered like 200 of these pillow pods for my makita coffee machine. I can send some to Scott if I can get a address?

Get an "AeroPress" and a normal electric kettle for on-site coffee. They're like 60 nzd, and absolutely worth he money.

I didn't get the scaffolding at first. I assume it is for safety, but nothing a lanyard can't do. It seems like such a waste of time & manpower.
Yep, New Zealand is over-run by Health and Safety bureaucracy.
little tip, cut the cripples under the window trimmer at 7 degrees. any water will just run off that tilted trimmer like water off a ducks back.

No snow loads ever for most of the country, and most of the “wall bracing” is relying on plaster board with more screws 🤯
