      Top ten WoT moments, imo:
      1) The Wayback Ter'angreal
      2) Dumai's Wells
      3) Battle over Falme/Conclusion of tGH
      4) Veins of Gold
      5) The Dragon is Reborn (End of tDR, Rand vs Ba'alzamon)
      6) Sealbreaker/"The Black Tower protects, Always"
      7) 'What Might Be' (Portal stone scene; "I have won again Lews Therin")
      8) Cleansing of Saidin
      9) Perrin forges Mah'allenier
      10) Rand in the Caemlyn throne room (tEotW)
Conversely mine are almost all Rand moments, haha.

I will say, i think the only reason Lan didn't die was because if he did, Nynaeve would not have been able to help Rand. The only other way would be if she broke the Bond, but there was no real reason to do that. So Lan had Plot Armour.

"But it was AN ending" I was actually crying with the last words of this series. I thought it was strange how just one sentence could fit so perfectly into tying up such an impactful series. Which hit harder with the obvious fact that.... It was over.... the longest journey I've been through, months of reading. Yelling at the book in both despair and joy.....and it was over. And it still boggles me how just a simple sentence could be the ending to the greatest stories I've ever read.

    • @Hostilehippie13
      @Hostilehippie13 3 года назад +10

I cried several times during the last book and that line got me too. I teared up as I realized it was coming and lost it at the end. “But it was AN ending.” I couldn’t possibly imagine a better way to end the book.

    • @asmodean7239
      @asmodean7239 2 года назад +14

The greatest thing about ending is that the very first chapter of the series starts with: the wind was not the beginning. Then the very last ends with: the wind was not the end. THEN Loyal’s quote comes, something like: “He came like the wind, like the wind touched us all and like the wind he left” - summary of all the books by the one who wanted to record everything. So much meaning. The first chapter wasn’t the beginning of Rand’s life and wasn’t the beginning of Dragon’s cycle and wasn’t the beginning of wheel of time’s turns. The last chapter wasn’t (spoiler alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) the end of Rand, wasn’t the end of Dragon cycle, wasn’t the end of Wheel of time. Because it will live in our memory forever.

If there's one moment I wish could've landed on this list, it's Rand's merging with Lews Therin on Dragonmount. It's a culmination of Rand's anxiety, fears, pressure, and stress with the burden of the world being placed on his shoulder, a madman in his head, not understanding why it's worth fighting for. As he threatens to destroy the world just to end the cycle of suffering, it's terrifying to think that he actually might do it. As he realizes why he fights and comes to an understanding in himself, it's a glorious moment as he transitions into a man prepared to face the Dark One. Probably my favourite moment in the whole series.

It just felt like the epitome of his resourcefulness, and a great example of taking a horrible experience and turning it into a learning experience. The Lan riding through the army is actually a lot less hand waving cause of Tam and the Emonds field archers, especially because it comes hand in hand with another of my favourite scenes which is Tam showing how much he mastered the flame and void firing arrows, how he fires perfectly aimed arrows with multiple still flying and they perfectly hit their marks, it’s one arrow one dead trolloc.
This also makes me want to remember two other badass Tam moments namely him sparring with Rand and him putting down Cadsuane. That last one is special cause we see aes sedai bullying people suspending them in the air, but when she tries that with Tam he just doesn’t give a shit showing he’s not gonna be bullied and he’s just hanging there like “ I asked you a question” and he’s just waiting for an answer. That scene was by far the most emotionally affecting to me, because for a while, it led the reader to believe that that was guaranteed, and that bleak future for the Aiel was just the cost of humanity's survival, and that made so much sense. the Aiel and the Seanchan are set up as so much more powerful than any other group, and the way that it was presented, starting after the Aiel are destroyed and retreating back, really made the reveal so much more powerful. Every trip through Rhuidean was significant, but that one was truly impactful.

I always thought the scene where Rand regained his sanity was just unbelievable backtracking since Jordan had made him too crazy too fast. It never made sense, as if the Taint is a choice. He's not the Creator. I accepted it because there was nothing else to do but drop the series, but it was honestly one of the weakest points in the series. Also, deathgates were flashy, but inefficient. Trying to revive the dead girl in the Stone of Tear though, that was definitely worthy of a top 10 mention.

It's such a big deal that Nynaeve was able to heal the one guy's taint, and even though I know Rand is super powerful, this thread just didn't fit with the rest of the story. And since Jordan initially planned the series to be 6 books, the unevenness of his madness appears more likely due to that than his magically doing something that they've said can't be done, just because he sits and meditates on a mountaintop.

    For me:
    10. Tam's moment. he's just a regular guy who has pretty much been forgotten about. But when the most powerful man in existence is about to destory everything it is his Dad that can make the difference. It is his normal retired old dad who reminds him he is human, forgivable and capable of forgiveness.
9.The reverse history of the Aeil when Rand goes to the Pillars. Oh my goodness what a fantatic moment and manner of explaining the Aeil. Using a 'show' to give us a massive 'Tell'. In my view one of the most unique storytelling moments in the books and delivered perfectly.
    8. The double dragon reveal. When the false Car'a'carn raises his dragon banded arm and then Rand doesn't realise till Ruarc uncovers and raises both!
    7. When the maidens come to break their spears because Rand left them behind. At first we think it is only one and he solves the problem by reacting well but then he goes outside and sees them all lined up all of them ready to sacrifice all that they are for honour and the lesson and the love they bear the only known son of a maiden. Brilliant.
    6. I love Nynaeve talking to the man of old Malkier and just simply explaining what Lan would do (Because she understands him so amazingly well. He is the mountain, he will do what the mountain will do, he will bear what must be born the mountain cannot move because it doesn't like the wind). So she doesn't try to stop him or bar his path but she 'channels' his force by where he places him. Then to simply ask "Will he ride alone?" Was just so sweet and amazing! My favourite couple in the series BAR NONE!
    5. Matt uses the Ashedari to cheat in the Towers of Midnight. Again I love the layering of clues that lead us to this moment. I love the prophecy arch, the letter, the gleeman moments everything.
    4. Perrin forges the hammer and becomes whole in himself. I use the forging as the moment but he is my favourite character. I think he is the least selfish and the most likeable of all Jordan's characters. I would me mates with Perrin IRL but so many of the characters I love Mat, Rand, Egwene and Nyneave... I would just delete from my friends list soon enough. My fears for Perrin were never that he might die but that he might lose himself, through Berelain, or the loss of Faile or by being forced to awful decisions by Whitecloak lies, but the forging of the hammer after the Faile resolution and his acceptance of the wolves and his role as leader was just YES! I didn't fear from him ever again not even in the Last Battle when Balefire was a flying.
    3. Dumai Wells, yes Kneal or you will be Knealt, Ashaman KILL! What a flipping moment. We haven't heard whats been going on for ages and the way Rand has been abused and betrayed we are in anguish and then suddenly BOOM! I literally shouted aloud when I read it the first time. I moment of sheer excitement, victory and exultation.
    2. Verin's reveal of her life long work. I love it and I love it and I love it. I love the hints that lead up to it, I love the darkness of it, I love the necessity of it. What a character, what an idea, what a plot line, what a pay off.
    1. The cleansing of the Taint. The battles the reveals the amont of character development the Chodean Kal pay off. It was just.... brilliant, stunning game changing.
I could go on and on and on. The tower coup.. what a shock.... the final battle (Partially not chosen in my top 10 because it is just full of so many different moments), the freeing of Gaul, The Honey in the Tea chapters when Egwene is a prisoner but never more a leader and a queen than in that captivity. The healing of Logain, Mat's fight with the golam and marriage to Tuon, (Absolutely bizare and cool), The reveal that Egwene is Amyrlin Seat when it looked certain to go differently etc. The books are just THAT GOOD.

Seeing them play out their moves, Mat gaining control of all the forces and realizing that even if Rand wins that they could still lose if he didn't give it his all and being so good and matching Demandred so much that he thinks it is Lews Therin on the other side of the board actually. That entire part through their eyes is amazing, more so because of Mat, but still.

There's so many battle moments in WoT that the interpersonal moments really stand out in my memory more strongly. Tam dressing down Cadsuane and the rest of her coterie was incredibly cathartic. Rand seeing through the eyes of his Aiel ancestors, ultimately taking him back to the time of Lews Therin and the sealing might be my favorite moment in all the books. Egwene finally getting the upper hand against her Seanchan captors. Verin's reveal.

    1. Nynaeve rallies the borderlanders to the golden crane
    2. That’s the Novice Quarters (egwene Rallies the tower)
    3. Elaida mentions Rand’s Heron marked blade (the entire scene but that’s my favourite part, this will be one of the best scenes in season 1
    4. It’s Just a Weave
    5. The women join the battle at Emond’s Field/arrival of Tarren Ferry and Deven Ride
    6. Mat vs Galad and Gawyn

Loial singing above the grave of the Green Man, Elayne and Aviedha second birth as twins ( love Amys very much here, she shows that Mother aspect of Wise Ones) , Moiraine telling the Emond fielders story of Manetheren, Rand's epiphany on Dragonmount, Nynaeve healing the Taint in Asha'man brains, Verin's last talk with Egwene, and of cause several Egwene scenes cause she is my absolutely favourite character, especialy her soul speeking with Rand during his confrontation vs the DO and encouraging him exactly when he need this so much.

Great list. I most say that purposely not including Dumai Well's is either over sight or trying to stir up comments. You are a big fan moments of culmination, I like more the crux of character development.
    10.
    Nynaeve breaking her block
    9. Battle for Two Rivers
    8. Perrin throwing his axe away
    7. Nynaeve gem trader speech
    6. Cleansing the source
    5. Mat beating Gawyn and Gallad
    4 Rand on dragonmount
    3. A cup of tea with Verin
    2. Rands Final speech
    1. Dumai wells
    I Cheat- Honorable mentions!
HM Egwene getting beaten by Mitress of Novices and embracing pain and then singing
    HM Nynaeve healing stilling
HM Ingtar comes out of the shadow
    HM Olver blowing the horn
Here are my explanations out of the quick hit list.
    10. The stubborn, hard willed woman who will stand and fight for what she feels is right and for those she will protect, finally surrenders. She doesn't budge to a person or Saidar, she surrenders to death.
    9. The trollocs are overwhelming the defenses of these poorly armed and trained farmers. Tinkers have children strapped to their backs to run away from the carnage that will ensue if Two RIvers is defeated. Defenses have now been broken. Vaunted Two RIvers bowman are n in melee combat with a greater force they cant defeat. On first read, hell even on rereads, I'm positive its the end of the Two Rivers. But there is a battle cry from far away and help has arrived. Neighbor helping Neighbor. A wife that will not abandon his new husband to death has come with new forces. Perrin's exuberance at seeing his wife and knowing he will see her again and Two Rivers will not fall. Goosebumps. Every. Time.
    8. I get it, Perrin forging Mah'alleinir is cool but him cutting the hand off an Aiel and then having it healed as a form of toture!?!? This man has lost his mind and he knows it. NO! Perrin you are becoming the WOLF! NO!. Then he walks to the woods and deposes of the great ax and leaves it behind for ever. He wont just be a destroyer he will be a creator (hint hint he creates power wielded weapons)
    7. This brings up a list i want to see. Greatest monologues in the entire series. While this is probably only #2 on that list. This speech on the reread makes me want to put on a Hadori myself... and im bald.
    6. The pacing. The intensity. The grand magnitude. Rand does what can not be done. This scene is also where you really get a feeling on how Nynaeve is truely the last person rand trusts in the series. In such a vulnerable place and time he gives her more power than any woman has probably wielded.... ever. We also see Min in a battle scene where some of the most powerful channelers in the world and fighting using this power. She has a belt knife but she WILL protect the man she loves. Elayne feels Rand Channeling, knows he is in danger, and could go to him but literally says Camelyn is more important than Rand. Why does she exist as a love interest?!? /rant
    5. Matt beating Gawyn and Galad isnt just a cool scene with a farm boy besting these two nobles in sword/ polearm fighting. It's the start of Matt's character arc. Its the point in the story where he becomes useful. He isnt just the whiney guy who distrusts every person he comes across. When friends read the series the first 2/3 books they always ask "why do people like matt!?!" It took 3 books but he finally starts to become the character everyone loves.
    4. Rand on dragonmount also needs to include him almost balefiring Tam. RAND AL' THOR ALMOST BALEFIRES TAM AL' THOR. Rand has seriously lost it. He has broken. For 12 books he is told he is the most important person in the world and he must again save the world. He has broken. Rand travels to Ebou Dar and sees how well the Seachan are at conquering and holding cities with out killing and starving. He sees more of his failures. On dragonmount he questions everything and comes to the conclusion its not about the horribleness of life but about the good moments. It's about the love we get to experience and lose and love again. There is a lot more to the Symbol of Aes Sedai being a form of a Ying Yang than just male and female channlers in this story. In this watershed moment failure is not an option any longer for Rand al' Thor.
    3. A cup of tea with Verin is one of the most shocking, heart wrenching, cleverly written scenes PERIOD. The simple line of "Your dress is green" starts one of the best conversations in the entire series. Learning Verin was forced to the dark one against her will but has remained true to the light. Verin's life work was to help bring down the black Ajah who's greatest power comes from the secrecy of their members. And this- 'But your soul is not Brown. I can see it...Your soul is of a pure white, Verin,' Egwene said softly. 'Like the Light itself.'" A complete redemption arc for a character you didnt even know needed a redemption arc in just a few pages.
    2. Rand's final speech finds a way to pointedly sum each major character arc of a 14 books series! in just a few words. I suggested a top 10 monologues from the series earlier. I think this is #1. Not that it matters too much- was this part Sanderson's writing or Jordan's?
    1. Shame on you Daniel. Shame. Shame. Dumai Wells is the best moment from the series. The intensity of the battle. Rands escape from the box. The utter destruction and carnage of the battle. All of it. Plus it has some of the most quotable lines from the entire series with the most power. Two words change the entire landscape of the entire series. "Asha'man kill." The asha'man arent just a blip in the story they are now force for the entire series. Why do the Aes Sedai have an oath not to use the power as a weapon because of the blood bath that happens here. Up to here would make this a top 5 moment in the book but now Rand demands fealty from Aes Sedai. "Kneel or your will be knelt!" WHoa. The power dynamics of the series gets spun on its head at this moment. It is an action packed scene with blood, carnage and destruction while also completely changing the future dynamics of an entire series. This is why its the best moment in the entire series.
For those that stayed and read. Thank you.

Great list. I agree on Emond's Field (I'd place it #1 personally because I love it so much) but would leave it off a list simply because it is not one SCENE/moment but is an incredible story. (TSR is my favorite book, easily) But a cup of tear with Verin is incredible as well. Verin was one of my favorite characters from tGH but I could never entirely put my finger on "why" until here. She also gets one of my favorite quotes at Emond's Field when Perrin asks her why she stayed with them to die and Verin calmly replies: "Is that what we're doing? No, I don't think so." (^_^)
