    One thing I find hilarious and interesting is that the each incarnation of Blackadder gets increasingly smarter each season but loses social stature/wealth, while Baldrick just gets dumber and dumber. LOL.

    This is the season in which the show really comes into its own. (The fourth is even better, but this one sets the bar pretty high!) It relies much more on wordplay than the previous two. On Percy’s absence.
    After Blackadder II: it wasn’t expected that they’d make another series as the writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton had some sort of falling out and Ben Elton was very busy with career commitments.
    So in 1986; Tim McInnery, who had played Percy in the first two Blackadder’s, decided to commit himself to some film for early 1987. Allegedly; Curtis and Elton weren’t initially aware and when they got on with writing Blackadder III, wrote most of the series with the Percy character, but then found out about the actor and had to write him out, which is why many of the stories in Blackadder III are a bit light and seem a bit unfinished.
    The actor does reappear in the Blackadder goes forth, but playing a different recurring character.

    • @rumourhats

  • @dernwine
    @dernwine 2 года назад +2

    Just to explain a few of the more obvious "British History" gags in the episode:
    The Pitt the Even Younger thing is a joke about these two Prime Ministers:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pitt,_1st_Earl_of_Chatham
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pitt_the_Younger
    Back then the Vote was basically similar to the way it worked in America: You needed to own land to vote. But in America most people owned a small plot of land somewhere, in the UK it was a lot rarer, most people rented. Plus Lords didn't vote because the House of Commons was the representative body of the non-aristocratic parts of society, Lords didn't need to vote because they where represented in the House of Lords (the US equivalent would roughly be the Senate, while the Commons is more like Congress) by themselves.
    Prince George is the son of George III who, as Blackadder points out at one point, lost the American colonies and became Regent of the United Kingdom when George III went mad, and was viewed as a bit of extravagant playboy. Hence "son of a sauerkraut sucking loon" (George I, II, III, and IV where from the House of Hannover, ie they where from Germany).
    The crumpet thing is basically a jab at the ritual bullying that was systematic in British Public Boarding Schools.

      I think that as series 1 is often considered to be the least accomplished and has flaws people assume that it's bad. But it's only because it's being judged relative to the other series of Blackadder. Compared to most other comedy series that aren't Blackadder it's better than most of them.
