actually ancient and medieval india had numerous planned cities . vijaynagar was described by portugese as best planned city in the world even better than rome. madurai , mathura , jaipur , patna , vaishali were highly planned cities. its just that due to 1000 years of invasion , all the city planning has crumbled. still if you wanna see medieval architecture , other than temples , you should visit chettinad region in tamil nadu , old towns of bikaner, jodhpur, jaisalmer , shekhawati in rajasthan, etc
