  • The highly toxic puffer fish, or fugu, is the most dangerous meal you can have in Japan. In Japan, eating poisonous puffer fish (fugu) has been likened to thrill-seeking but have a non-toxic farmed version catch on.

Understandably farm-raised does not taste the same as wild-caught. Different environment and different feed affect the taste. Same for salmon. I love how they keep ecosystem balanced by dividing half to sea and half for farm-raised.

Actually, if you'd re-watch the video they say that "After hatchery, part is transferred to the fish farm and part is released into the sea." This is media "double speak" to make you think they meant half and half. If they really did release 50% into the sea they'd be really proud of it and tell you so. But, since they plan to keep this most expensive resource in farms they can only say "part" was released into the sea! The media does this all the time, like when they claim "Americans agree that such and such..." when in reality it was only a few Americans that agreed, not most like they made you believe! So, technically they're telling the truth!

People die in car accidents every year but people still drive. Deaths with puffer fish are actually quite rare and are usually when it is prepared by someone not licensed to do so.

The Japanese always have very interesting ways of doing things, more natural. Here we would automate it, that's what I do for a living, help automate systems to make companies more efficient so they can let their employees go. I typically see those companies find a spot for their employees until they retire and never hire more people.

In Japan, FUGU (Puffer Fish) are cultivated not only in the sea but also in the inland area.
In the inland area, there are places where hot springs containing salt come out.
Wild puffer fish stores poison in the body from food.
However, puffer fish cultivated inland is not poisonous because the food is completely controlled.
You can taste all of the puffer fish including the delicious internal organs.
