The iPad Mini 7 is a good upgrade from a iPad Mini 5, which I did, and from a M1 Mac Mini to an M4 Mac Mini Pro is as well which I'll receive next Friday:-).
I’m ordering the base model as well. I’ve been rocking my M1 Mac mini for films, video editing, music etc. having this being 4 times faster is a no brainer upgrade. And I have 24 TB of fast external drives as well:)
I ordered a base model yesterday. Decided to trade in the m2 mini I got on eBay for $260 so I’ll be paying about $19 per month for the new mini. No complaints. I could use the extra usbc ports
I think that's one of the best use cases for the entry level mini. Perfect way for people to dip their toes into the Mac world without breaking the bank.
The form factor of the new mini is actually very similar to the original Mac Mini. I ordered about 20 of those back in 2009 when managing the Mac network at the Global Publishing Office at the US State Department. For security reasons the Mac network we used for publication production and administrative management via Filemaker Pro applications I had created had to physically separated from the PC based department network so we connected the PC’s monitor and KB to an A-B switch box with A being the PC’s CPU and B being the Mac Mini. It was the ideal situation. I brought home all the boxes for storing things and still use them. I had been using a iMac at home but this year when upgrading I went with a M2 Mini and Studio Monitor instead of another iMac because Apple hadn’t upgraded them yet.

The worst performing Apple silicon Mac is the base level M2 Mac Mini with only a 256 Gb SSD and 8 Gb or RAM. This is because whereas the base level M1 and M3 Apple Silicon Macs implement 256 Gb of flash memory using two 128 Gb flash modules, the M2 implements the 256 Gb using only a single flash module. This means that SSD read and write speeds are limited to how much can be read and written to a single flash module. All other Apple Silicon Macs can read and write to two flash modules simultaneously. I would really like to know is whether an M4 Mac Mini with a 256 Gb SSD has one or two flash modules. My guess is that Apple have learned their lesson and it will have two 128 Gb flash modules which will make it a very good Mac to buy. I do not believe that adding external SSDs improves the performance of an Apple Silicon Mac. This is because a lot of important parts of MacOS such as the swap file needs to be on the fastest possible internal SSD.

What no one seems to be addressing is A.I. As this element grows, how much computing power is going to be necessary to effectively maximize it down the road?

@@PatrickRambles Yes indeed. I suspect there are other just as good, but cheaper options. It's a shame I can't connect the Mac Mini to my existing 2017 '27' inch iMac which has such a good screen!
Looking forward to your review! As a 3d artist and part-time musician, my Mini configuration would be very similar to yours, so let’s see what happens! Special mention to those fans decibels as well!
I ordered the M4 Pro Mac Mini with the 14/20 chip upgrade. Everything else is fine for my use case except storage, which I have external USB-C hard drives I have been using on my soon to be retired M1 Mac Mini.
As a long time Mac Mini M2 user, I like the upgrades. My only concern is when are the new docking stations be available? I'm currently using a Satechi dock with a SSD drive slot. But I'm sure it's in the works. I'm definitely going to upgrade to the M4 when they're available.
I can see someone trying to combine iPad mini and new Mac mini together and creating a super small set up one that can probably fit in those side bags.
*Original Mac specs* The Macintosh 128K boasted an 8 MHz Motorola 68000 processor. The “128K” in its name indicated the computer’s #RAM. The first Mac featured two serial ports, and could accommodate one 3.5-inch floppy disc. It ran Mac OS 1.0, arrived with a 9-inch black-and-white monitor, and carried a price tag of $2,500 (the equivalent of around $7,380 today).
Been considering trading my 14” M1 MBP for this little fella. I barely ever bring the laptop out of the house nowadays (i just bring my iPad and that does everything I need it to do just fine). I just use it to run a small youtube channel and play with some side projects with mobile development nowadays so this thing honestly even the base M4 is good enough for me. Hopefully there is a performance gain with just going for a non Pro M4 from the M1 pro to sweeten the deal haha
@ the model i was actually considering which should be enough for me (M4 24GB/1TB), trading it in would make it basically 150-200 bucks. I need to stop thinking that I need to splurge for an M4 pro with my use case
I’m wondering was it so hard to fit a SD cart slot in there or event an extra slot for a NVME SSD? Those would have add an amazing extra value to whole set. Third party vendors will take advantage of this for sure. Cheers.
Wat vind je goed aan deze review? Ik kan ook de spec vinden op Apple website ! Ik wil de prestaties weten tussen een high end m4 en verschil met de m4 pro .
Fancy. And TB5 might have decent speed, but working straight of it would likely bring additional latency to the game. Ramping up to max transfers speeds probably can't compete with SOC l2 cache. Small detail. Otherwise it makes total sense to work straigth of a drive.
I want to buy a Mac. I trade on Binance and listen to FLAC files. Occasionally, I might edit videos. I frequently use Canva or Photoshop and AI tools like ChatGPT and MidJourney. I was interested in a Mac Studio M2 Max, but now that the M4 is available, I am considering the Mac Mini M4 Pro, which costs $1,399. Do you think it's a good choice, or is it overkill for my needs?
Should I upgrade to 24GB ram? I don't do anything with music editing or video editing, but I absolutely can't stand lag, and with Apple Intelligence, I wonder if a lot of RAM will be used for the base operating...
Nice Mini but just bought the M2 last year. Is this the future of Apple product introductions? From open theater, highly anticipated public intros - to full-length, pre-produced video intros covering entire products lines - to individual prerecorded product lineups broken into 3 segments. Feels detached and impersonal and certainly not the Apple connection with customers. Seems Apple has chosen to distance itself from the customer base it once embraced. Cold and distant, not inviting.
I need to see how much faster the M4 is than the M1 Pro for real world use. I could trade in my M1 Pro laptop and get the base model M4 Mini for no money.
I wish the jump up in cpu was also $200 instead of $400. A base machine will handle 90% of what I want, but that last 10% adds $2k to the price, and I'd rather get a studio with a Max chip and even more RAM. So I think I'm going to grab a base mini to tide me over, and consider the studio once they're out.
To me that’s the sweet spot. Definitely capable of gaming. Definitely will run through Final Cut Pro. And it’ll keep up with an m3 max base with similar spec. I have a cellular 1tb 16gb ram iPad Pro 11” m4 for portability plus a phone. For serious work and play the Mac mini will be me my go to with a 42” OLED and I have trackpads and keyboards already to go so it’s a no brainer.
@@VinceDae reread. maxed out chip. Your comment makes no sense. Why would I say 1tb and 48gb ram and call the unit maxed out. Would you prefer the upgraded m4 chip so you can understand what someone else purchased? Get educated and do better.
Patrick: it would be cool to see a video comparing the new iMacs and see how they compare to the Mac mini. I for one am on the fence and would love to see a video comparing specs and cost to help me make an informed decision. Thanks buddy and keep up the great content.
Hi Partick, Nice video on the M4 thanks for sharing. I have a MBP 14" with the M2 Pro 16gb ram. I really started to get into FCPX as my choice of editor. I have found limits in terms of raw performance / ram, and so I am looking to go for either the Mac Mini M4 Pro, or possibly wait for the Studio to get its upgrade next year. My editing is purely for hobby work and I love learning about the editing. I have 3x 4K screens, and use these on my Win11 machine daily, but I have decided to get a deskptop mac, as the laptop just doesnt perform enough when editing and doesnt support 3x 4K screens. So the decisions are 1) purchase a decent spec Mini 48gb or 64GB ram, or wait and see how the Mac Studio M4 does and go for that. The Mac mini could well be the best solution for me, however, if I use the TB5 ports for the monitors, then its a bit of a waste. I mean, I dont want to purchase more than 1TB of built in storage, even 512GB would be enough, as external nvme ssd's are so much cheaper. So my theory is this. Get a external dock that can support my screens, and then use the TB5 for fast nvme SSD's. OR, use 2x TB5 for 2 screens, use 1x HDMI for another screen, and then get a 4TB drive for fast nvme storage. Thanks for your ideas and I will be watching your next M4 video 🙂 Great work. Thank you.
2:45 stating that Apple has been known to be a bit stingy - absolutely true - on the memory and not expecting the 16GB to be standard, and then to have them announce today (10/30) that all M2 & M3 MacBook Airs now ALSO start with 16GB at the same price as they were yesterday for 8GB models was a WOWZERS SHOCK!
so im confused.... according to apple this new m4 is not even 2 times faster than the m1 mac mini (and we're 3 chips down the line already) so how is this new one a power house?
@@PatrickRambles i dont buy it... i think they are selling it more on the re-design than the performance... ill wait to see some reviews. Apple silicon tends to be PowerHungry, more so than Powerful!
@MatthiasHamilton that makes even less sense. They're the same efficient chips twe get in the laptops, except now the computer is plugged in to the mains. How do you measure how "powerhungry" they are. Seems like you're just trolling.
I really look forward to your review on the Mac mini with the M4 pro chip. I'm looking to edit videos. Currently, I own the 2019 i9 intel MacBook Pro and it's too slow. I really need an upgrade.
Might have jumped the gun on the Mac mini. M4 is a great chip, but it still only has one video encoder, compared to the Max with two. Whatever other performance boosts the Mac mini has all video will have to go through half the encoders to render compared to a Max chip. Jury is out on what that will mean when rendering video on something like Final Cut Pro.
That’s a good price. However, you probably should have added the cost of dual monitors to the bottom line to give a more realistic view. Especially if you’re getting the top of the line monitors
I don’t disagree with you. However if you’re talking about value and complete set up. It’s just suggested that one or even dual monitors would be included in your video. Maybe when yours is delivered you can suggest a monitor in your unboxing and set up. I worked at Apple for 2 years and when selling this product we always suggested a monitor, even when the customer already has one. Worse thing is to get a product home to find out inputs aren’t compatible and dongles are needed. This new Mac is great for a new Mac user coming from PC. They may have monitors at home that wouldn’t connect without a dongle. Again just a suggestion my friend. I like your content and find it very useful. 😊
I expect to buy the new Mac mini, but I will wait a while to check out AI benchmarks, I need to determine how much RAM I and whether I need the M4 Pro. I will probably end up buying either base model with 32gb or M4 Pro with either 48 or 64gb ram. For storage I will add external storage.
You just answered your own question. Every other mouse can be used whilst charging. I don't want to have to wait for my mouse to charge if it dies mid-work.
@@PatrickRambles How often you charge it? Few times a year? Even if it dies mid work, you can charge it for a minute or two and use it rest of the day. Not sure where they could put charging port to be able to use it while charging, due to curved design. But anyway, I find Magic Mouse terrible mouse due to other reasons, like ergonomics.
I know people are going to dog pile on me, but I don't like the headphone jack on the front. Obviously I get that it doesn't affect performance, but one of the things I really like about the previous model was how clean it looked from the front. While this new model is smaller, it reminds me of those IBM and HP office top mini computers with all the ports across the front.
I also prefer the headphone port on the back because I have mine at my desk permanently. I guess people who use theirs occasionally might be happy about the front port.
Just curious, would it be bad to use it sideways? Do the wires going to the side mess up the aesthetic? The front ports don’t bother me, but I get wanting to have a look that you find appealing. I have been flustered by port placement in the past purely for the visual.
8 GB RAM was already a big NO 20 years ago. De benefits of dual channel memory were there all the time for pc's. The same thing counts for apple computers.

@@BillyLuna you'll see no speed increase from TB 5 with that drive. It will always run at a maximum of USB 3.2 Gen 2 speed.
Which is still plenty fast, all things considered, BTW.
I see the question has been answered already, but yeah we are limited by the max speeds of the drives/ports. Waiting for TB5 SSDs to be released, I see there's on available for preorder by OWC, but I'm sure more will follow soon.
Is there any confirmation that a Mac Studio M4 Max will be released in 2025?
I ordered the base model. I have a 1TB external SSD for storage. I’m excited to see how it performs!
Nice!
What no one seems to be addressing is A.I. As this element grows, how much computing power is going to be necessary to effectively maximize it down the road?
Nobody is addressing it because so far Apple Intelligence is mostly promises and half implemented gimmicks. AI is evolving so rapidly, how could anyone sensible predict what is needed down the road.
Which is better Mac mini m2pro or Mac mini m4?
Probably a high spec M4. But we need to get the product in hand to be sure.
I would love to see how the base model competes to a mini pc which i use daily for years.
The new Mac Mini looks amazing. I am tempted to get one but am unsure what the best screen would be to use with it. Any suggestions?
The obvious choice would be the Apple Studio display but those are quite pricey.
@@PatrickRambles Yes indeed. I suspect there are other just as good, but cheaper options. It's a shame I can't connect the Mac Mini to my existing 2017 '27' inch iMac which has such a good screen!
I am interested in seeing what happens with cooling and to see if it overheats.
Me too.
Great video pal. I’m considering buying one. Do you think the M4 pro version will be better than my Mac studio 32 GB RAM with M1 Ultra chip?
That's a very good question and honesty I can't be sure. Maybe wait till after the 8th, I'm sure someone will make that comparison video.
Correction : You got 8 Terabytes of *STORAGE!* Not ram or memory.
Thanks for being the 100th person to point that out. Obviously I meant storage.
@ LOL!!!! No worries. After I posted I saw the others. We all make mistakes.
*WOOHOO!!! I AM THE 100TH!!! BEAT THAT EVERYONE!!!!* 🥳🥳🥳
I bought iPad Mini 7 and loving it, this mini also in my sight
Looking forward to your review! As a 3d artist and part-time musician, my Mini configuration would be very similar to yours, so let’s see what happens! Special mention to those fans decibels as well!
I ordered the M4 Pro Mac Mini with the 14/20 chip upgrade. Everything else is fine for my use case except storage, which I have external USB-C hard drives I have been using on my soon to be retired M1 Mac Mini.
Is Clean My Mac necessary for Mac owner?
Necessary maybe not, but definitely useful and easy.
No need to make it smaller. Make it even more powerful instead. It’s already small.
I think they want to keep that for the Mac Studio.
70% of users will never cause the base mini to stutter.
As a long time Mac Mini M2 user, I like the upgrades. My only concern is when are the new docking stations be available? I'm currently using a Satechi dock with a SSD drive slot. But I'm sure it's in the works. I'm definitely going to upgrade to the M4 when they're available.
Honestly, I ain’t upgrading but I love the consistency of the design with the Mac Studio.
I'm getting the maxed out version, already have the studio display
Nice!
I WILL UPGRADE FROM A 2019 MACBOOK AIR TO THE NEW MAC MINI
Massive upgrade!
I am upgrading from 2014 mba.
I can see someone trying to combine iPad mini and new Mac mini together and creating a super small set up one that can probably fit in those side bags.
i don't understand the emphasize on small or thin at apple. The old one seemed fine. why not keep the extra space for cooling?
I think it's twofold, one is to show what they can do with these chips, and two to answer consumers needs for something "new".
You can get many more minis in a shipping container.
Say manymoreminis 20x really fast
As usual The only review worth watching and sharing 💪🏻
I appreciate that!
Yes, please also review the base model. Great content as always.
Will do!
Yeah, the base model video would be awesome. That’s what I plan on buying.
*Original Mac specs*
The Macintosh 128K boasted an 8 MHz Motorola 68000 processor.
Really good video!! Your configuration would cost in Spain 3.1648 €. I think a sweet spot for me would be the base M4 Pro with 1 TB at 1.899€
Been considering trading my 14” M1 MBP for this little fella. I barely ever bring the laptop out of the house nowadays (i just bring my iPad and that does everything I need it to do just fine). I just use it to run a small youtube channel and play with some side projects with mobile development nowadays so this thing honestly even the base M4 is good enough for me. Hopefully there is a performance gain with just going for a non Pro M4 from the M1 pro to sweeten the deal haha
yeah considering the performance you get for 600$ (less since you’re trading in) it’s probably enough to warrant an upgrade
Cheers.
Great video! Please do review the mac mini base model! Thanks Patrick!
Will do!
Goeie review.
Fancy. And TB5 might have decent speed, but working straight of it would likely bring additional latency to the game. Ramping up to max transfers speeds probably can't compete with SOC l2 cache. Small detail. Otherwise it makes total sense to work straigth of a drive.
Game?
I want to buy a Mac. I trade on Binance and listen to FLAC files. Occasionally, I might edit videos. I frequently use Canva or Photoshop and AI tools like ChatGPT and MidJourney. I was interested in a Mac Studio M2 Max, but now that the M4 is available, I am considering the Mac Mini M4 Pro, which costs $1,399. Do you think it's a good choice, or is it overkill for my needs?
This is an exciting upgrade. Good coverage!
Thanks!
Should I upgrade to 24GB ram? I don't do anything with music editing or video editing, but I absolutely can't stand lag, and with Apple Intelligence, I wonder if a lot of RAM will be used for the base operating...
If it fits your budget, more RAM is never a bad choice.
This might be my first Mac. I am seriously thinking about getting the base model to break into the Mac world. Thanks for the video and recommendation.
That would be a perfect entry Steve. It's a great deal.
I would have to agree.
I need to see how much faster the M4 is than the M1 Pro for real world use. I could trade in my M1 Pro laptop and get the base model M4 Mini for no money.
Ordered been without a Mac for over a year at that price it’s time to go back since they are not unleashing the iPads potential.
I have Mac Studio m1 Max and does great, don't see any point in upgrading, won't be that much faster to notice anything
Can i use the Mac Mini M4 Pro with my imac 27 5k macOS 13.6.9?? will i get good performance when editing HEVC h.265 Videos??
Are you asking if you can use the iMac as an external monitor? (You can't).
@@PatrickRambles which one can i use?
@@PatrickRambles what can you recommend i use?
You can use pretty much any external monitor. The Apple Studio display would be an obvious choice but it's expensive.
1tb maxed out m4pro chip and 48gb ordered
To me that’s the sweet spot. Definitely capable of gaming. Definitely will run through Final Cut Pro. And it’ll keep up with an m3 max base with similar spec. I have a cellular 1tb 16gb ram iPad Pro 11” m4 for portability plus a phone. For serious work and play the Mac mini will be me my go to with a 42” OLED and I have trackpads and keyboards already to go so it’s a no brainer.
Maxed out? Neither memory or storage is maxed out? 😂
@@VinceDae reread. maxed out chip. Your comment makes no sense. Why would I say 1tb and 48gb ram and call the unit maxed out. Would you prefer the upgraded m4 chip so you can understand what someone else purchased? Get educated and do better.
@@zdoubleyou2073wow, so you got the 200$ upgrade… sick
Is the base model enough for average graphic and editting???
Equal m2 pro ¿
Basic stuff? Absolutely
@@PatrickRamblesThank you but if I could get the mac mini pro its more than enough for heavy graphics work ?
Sorry it will be my first time ois
First iOS device sorry
M4 pro , upgraded chip here. Very excited. I did stick with the 24gb as I don't need more for my use case 👍
Great choice. I don't think many people need more than 24GB
I’m excited about this one like you were about the iPad mini. 😬
Haha it's a great product!
Patrick: it would be cool to see a video comparing the new iMacs and see how they compare to the Mac mini. I for one am on the fence and would love to see a video comparing specs and cost to help me make an informed decision. Thanks buddy and keep up the great content.
Noted!
Thank you.
Thinking of base model with 27" curve 4K display , connect it to my keycron mechanical keyboard and mouse. got 1TB SanDisk SSD
8TB or RAM? You mean storage…
Obviously
2:45 stating that Apple has been known to be a bit stingy - absolutely true - on the memory and not expecting the 16GB to be standard, and then to have them announce today (10/30) that all M2 & M3 MacBook Airs now ALSO start with 16GB at the same price as they were yesterday for 8GB models was a WOWZERS SHOCK!
Fart at 0:36? Or cleverly timed sound effects?
No, just bad Mexican food.
Mhh, mini Pro or a little more patience and go for the new Studio with the M4 Max? Choices, choices 🤭
That base price point is very tempting. Glad i haven't pulled the trigger on a used m1|2 mini yet.
so im confused.... according to apple this new m4 is not even 2 times faster than the m1 mac mini (and we're 3 chips down the line already) so how is this new one a power house?
We are two chips down the line, there is no M3 mini. And double the performance is nothing? 😂
@@PatrickRambles i dont buy it... i think they are selling it more on the re-design than the performance... ill wait to see some reviews. Apple silicon tends to be PowerHungry, more so than Powerful!
Powerhungry? MacBooks have insane battery life. What are you talking about?
@@PatrickRambles im talking about the desktops not the laptops
@MatthiasHamilton that makes even less sense. They're the same efficient chips twe get in the laptops, except now the computer is plugged in to the mains. How do you measure how "powerhungry" they are. Seems like you're just trolling.
I really look forward to your review on the Mac mini with the M4 pro chip. I'm looking to edit videos. Currently, I own the 2019 i9 intel MacBook Pro and it's too slow. I really need an upgrade.
Coming soon!
Problem is now you can get the m4 max macbook pro 14 for around the same price as a high end mac mini with top specs.
Yes but in which configuration.
as a windows user I'm impressed with mac mini m4.
soon planning to give it a chance
Great way to try out a Mac.
That’s a good price. However, you probably should have added the cost of dual monitors to the bottom line to give a more realistic view. Especially if you’re getting the top of the line monitors
Most people already own a monitor. I don't see why I should add the cost of dual monitors, a MacBook doesn't have dual monitors either.
For storage I will add external storage.
why does it matter where the connector is on the magic mouse? It's not supposed to be used while charging
Just lacks the SD Card slot which would have been nice. Great device however and those TB5 ports can’t be slept on.
They need to keep some stuff to upsell you to the Mac Studio 😅
8 GB RAM was already a big NO 20 years ago. De benefits of dual channel memory were there all the time for pc's. The same thing counts for apple computers.
Best value, but base model with 256GB storage is basically unusable?
I do believe 256 is not adequate in 2024.
@PatrickRambles Agree absolutely, I would argue 1TB is desirable in 2024. Even external thudnerbolt storage spagetti is not cheap either.
Maxed out base model on the ram bought the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard didn’t do the memory cause I can buy a dock for cheaper in all honesty haven’t had a computer in many years
In 2024 16/512 should be baseline, and even with very heavy things (but many VMs) no one needs 64 GB of ram or a Max version on this architecture
I wasn't even in the market for a mac mini but $500.00 on the apple student store was too cheap to pass up so now I have a preorder :)
It's an amazing deal for sure
Pre-ordered the M4 pro mini. Upgrading from a 2013 iMac...
I'm considering a Pro model. Given that I was waiting for an M1 Max or Ultra model to drop in price after this launched, that's quite a switch.
These are looking like good value for money.
@@PatrickRambles FACTS. Since I plan to keep the model I purchase for several years, I'll take all the added value possible.
