    That's the proper way. The improper way is a small slow drill bit to make holes in each side of the old seal, from under the still installed engine. Use 2 long deck screws carefully screwed into the holes. claw hammer against end of shaft to slowly pry the wood screws/old seal out. Clean shaft and seat well. Slide on new oil seal, and drive in slowly with PVC pipe cut longer than the shaft.

    Or, Hi Tack gasket sealer sprayed on both sides of the gasket. I hang the gasket from a coat hanger with carboard behind it and spray both sides. It also helps the gasket stay in place.

    Good job. I fixed the compression release on my mower but thought I'd get away with keeping the old seal.
    First time out, oil spraying everywhere. Will have to take it all apart again.
    Should have listened to my old Dad's advice - if a job's worth doing.......

      Your video is great, but I'm struggling with my oil seal. What do you do with the pick? Are you pushing the seal down on the shaft or pressing the seal into its groove in the sump? Can't figure it out. Thanks.

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  6 месяцев назад

      @@rooba63 I pressed the seal down without the shaft in it and the pan taken off. Not sure if you can put it in there without removing the oil pan.

      @rooba63 don't feel bad, I did the same thing after takin the sump off last fall. My leak at the seal is not as severe that I am loosing enough oil to have to add any, but will have to pull it back off the end of this season and replace the seal. However, I don't think it is necessary to take the sump off again; I have seen DonyBoy73 and Taryl replace seals by pulling old ones off using a drywall screw and they carefully tapping a new one in, being careful like Mike point's out to no cover the oil hole by going to far down with the seal.

    Cool video. I just did the head gasket replacement on my 19HP Briggs. I was curious how the oil pan gasket is replaced. It doesn't appear to be leaking (yet). I hope I don't have to do this.

      Yep it is a pain. Well done on the head gasket. I will have a few more coming out on this motor soon.

  • @deltaxcd
    @deltaxcd 5 месяцев назад +1

    was it necessary to remove that oil pan for that?
    look lir it was possible to replace it even without removing engine

      For me yes, but I have only done it a couple of times. Maybe you can pull it off

      @@MowerMike Just did my own replacement no need to remove anything you juts use wood screw to pull it out and then hammer in new one ( which is sort of problematic as you need to find tube of right diameter. we damaged one seal)

    Did you forget to put the O-ring back on the oil pump when you slapped the cover back on? Didn’t see any O-ring in there.

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  4 месяца назад

      No idea that engine is long gone. It didn’t leak when I sold it so I guess it was sealed up.

    • @johnwaynewilliamson
      @johnwaynewilliamson 4 месяца назад +1

      20:34 the o-ring is still adhered to the cover that was placed on the oil pump, as it was picked up. But the "good enough from my house" response he gave was less than stellar.

    Thanks Mike, I have a similar Briggs OHV 13.5 HP engine on my ALKO riding mower and have what I assume is oil leaking somewhere as it looks oily on the plate under the engine / crankcase BUT it seems to be dripping from the breather tube where it meets the air intake manifold!? I've also had white smoke coming from the exhaust (where it meets the muffler) and from the top of the intake manifold after I stop it. Is this a different issue? Thanks again, Ben

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  4 месяца назад

      It is burning oil. I would check and make sure it isnt overfilled. They are very finicky about having the right oil level. If that is good then probably a bad head gasket or low compression. (Piston rings). Good luck I have videos on all of it

    • @BenP-rm3ip
      @BenP-rm3ip 4 месяца назад

      @@MowerMike thank you. I checked the oil and it is at the full level, maybe just a fraction over. Is there any way to know if it's the head gasket or low compression? Cheers, Ben

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  4 месяца назад

      @@BenP-rm3ip You can do a compression test that is easy just get a cheap gauge off the internet. Or you can do a leak down test I have a video on that for head gaskets
