You know how a lot of drama shows in the 2000s would have an episode about a popular new game that's obviously supposed to be Grand Theft Auto, where you get points for running over pedestrians or killing hookers? Well, this game actually is what the audiences of those shows think Grand Theft Auto is.
@@milesium-487 No no no, I think that's right on target. The comparison is not between Death Race 2000 and the actual GTA games; it's between Death Race 2000 and the image of GTA that detractors have built up in their minds, or really the image they talk about with actually knowing anything about the actual game. When GTA SA (or maybe it was GTA III?) first came out, there was a lot of commentary about how you could get a hooker and then your money would go down and you could beat her down and get your money back. GTA detractors would be quoted in articles or appear on TV talking about it like that was the point of the game. In reality, nobody does that more than once or twice because it does nothing to advance the game.
I know it's laughable now but every generations has a level of acceptance and then someone, or something, pushes that limit just a bit making that the new limit. Also, consider that this game was created at the very beginning of the video game craze. I mean, this thing is so new to that time that it was created entirely in hardware. No programmer programed this and put it on a chip. This game was created entirely on a PCB. That is why this doesn't exist in MAME. There are no ROMs. I played this game back in the day and I didn't consider it violent but you know how adults get. It's going to warp our children's minds.
Simm, it's because TTL were cheaper and more functional back then - in other words it was easier to create game like that. It was like programming, but not with code, but hardware - it was a hobby for many people as it wasn't difficult and it was relatively cheap. No biggie.

It probably wouldn't have garnered (as much) controversy if the devs had fiddled with the death screams, at the very least to make them sound less obnoxious, and if they changed the look of the gremlin graves.

Before Twisted Metal..... before Grand Theft Auto...... there existed one legendary arcade system so incredibly violent so incredibly explosive that it was banned! Karen Elizabeth Well, it is actually more of a simulation of this game than emulation. The only thing emulated is the sound effects since the sound sample was taken from the arcade. The game was redone to make it look like the original.
I think emulation can still be done, using TTL emulation. You know TTL is just a series of logic gates, and there's software for professional engineers to design logic circuits, and then simulate the circuit, before sending it to the factory to manufacture. I believe it's called SPICE, or something like that. Now that's expensive software, but it proves software can actually simulate a every single gate in a logic circuit. Since it's possible to do, and since it is a specific circuit that needs emulation (not a general logic gate simulator), it should be possible for a hobbyist programmer to write a program that not only mimics the game, but rather emulates it with a gate-for-gate accuracy, in the same way that a normal ROM is a bit-for-bit ROM dump of the game. Alternatively, it would be possible to play the real game on real hardware, and attach the composite-video output of the game to the video input connector on a video-capture dongle for your PC.

It must have been considered violent for mid 70's standards. I guess the idea of running people over with a car was a new thing in videogames back then. It would be considered quite tame by nowadays standards though.
I'm wondering about the sound in this game. This was back in the days where TTL logic still ruled home video game systems and microprocessors were just barely starting to be used in arcade games, so I don't see how these could've been digital samples. Were the engine sounds and screams recorded onto an 8 track cartridge and the audio for those tracks switched on to correspond to an in game event?
