Bought it next day. It’s been a big hit in our circle. Thanks Tim great tip and one of the reasons I always watch.

Believe it’s the French VDN they’re referring to lads, vin doux naturel - fortified wines like Banyuls or Rivesaltes

I got a bottle of their Fenniscourt peated version over Christmas. It's quite expensive but it's really interesting. I think it's the first to use Irish peat too in modern bottlings. Have have had a few of the single farms and loved them. Got a strong sulphur note in the cuvee that I didn't like though. Also use the code on the bottle on the Waterford websites for a detailed breakdown.

Hey Tim, thanks for the heads up on this one. I think that after much searching I have found the dram for me. Most Scotch I find the malt is buried under too much sherry or peat (or both). This Waterford is perfect for people like me who want a malt forward whiskey. Cheers.

So glad you guys got hold of a bottle of Waterford - they are great. However being a French Canadian working in the wine trade, I have to point out that VDN is French for 'Vin Doux Naturel' or 'natural sweet wine' which means a sweet fortified dessert wine. Waterford uses ex-Banyul dessert wine casks from the Roussillon in Southern France. Cheers gents, and should you come across the peated versions of Waterford, get them as they are allegedly amazing.

That version of 'VDN' wine makes way more sense for ageing whisky.

“Beating the Scots” I had to order that one for autumn dram. Still thinking about the Campbelltown 15 I left on the shelf that was $7.00 cheaper.

It sounds like this slaps real hard! Cheap especially since it's single farm. It's good stuff.

The Waterford series is indeed intriguing with subtle nuances between the various origins (I had around 10 versions at different occasions - even if the comparison is blurred as the cask mix is not always the same) and a clear respect for the raw material (quality distillation as you said). Unfortunatelyn in France the price is rather high (80E where a Glendronach 12 is 63 and an Arran 10 52) and it is more expensive than a comparable Bruichladdich Islay Barley (50%, origin of the barley, ca. 8 years).

If you take a look at the distillery itself the corrugated bottom of the bottle will make sense... it's not just there to be there. ;)
I've loved what I've had from Waterford thus far, Rathclogh 1.1 and Bannow Island 1.2. I can't wait to see what it's like at ~8yo.
As for the VdN casks, I believe they're using Vin doux Naturel, not Vino de Naranja for these. At least that's the case with the bottlings I have. (Here's to confusing initials, eh?)

Would say the price is fair, not low. It's less than 4yo. Good whisky!

I cannot see spending good money for such a young dram. Maybe a couple years down the road, but it drinks young. It’s different, yes - but different doesn’t mean it’s great. There are other Irish whiskies that can provide more utility. Method & Madness, Dingle, Middleton Rare, etc. Too hyped and too young is Waterford.

@TheSingleMaltReview I would be far more sympathetic if they had a business plan that made sense rather than an expensive concept that ignored the basics of establishing a brand.

Dave and Tim: I enjoy your reviews, and I don't want to seem too critical, but have you listened to them yourselves on yt? I have to put my laptop's volume up to 100% and even then often struggle to hear many of your words. I'm no technical expert, but I don't believe the issue is necessarily technical. At times in the above vid. Tim projects his voice, enunciates his words as when speaking to an audience, and then the sound is much clearer, indeed because I've had it turned up to full volume it becomes distortedly loud, a touch fuzzy around the edges. But for most of your vids you both take turns at speaking either in conversational fashion or even just mumbling to yourselves whilst trying to think of words to describe what you're tasting. That's kind of understandable as a process, but also a considerable problem for your audience. I don't want you to pretend, but realise that vids like this do have a performative aspect. So there's a couple of options: maybe look at the sound technically, e.g. where the microphone is best positioned and whether your hands/arms/glasses are possibly affecting the passage of the sound to the mic., or else maybe think about how you might want/need to speak so that your voices are more easily picked up and heard. If the sound was consistently poor/low I'd say it might be technical and the mic might need boosting, but it's not, at times you do speak clearly and I could then have the sound a touch lower to remove the distortion, so that implies it's how you're speaking rather than the mic that's the problem.
    Keep up the good reviews.

Thanks for the tips. We've just switched to a new mic which I'm still experimenting with the positioning of. I also wear headphones when producing the videos, so what sounds like the correct volume to me might sound different through laptop speakers. That one's a harder incongruity to solve.

    • @jbar6284
      @jbar6284 Год назад

@@TheSingleMaltReview That would be true if the sound was consistently inaudible, but it's not. It changes depending on how you both choose to speak, consciously or otherwise. I'm saying there may be technical changes that can help fix that, but a probably cheaper option is just to think about how you want/need to speak in order to be heard--certainly not "shouting", but an element of voice projection. The same issue occurs not only on stage but also tv sets/interviews. I don't at all want to change the "feel" of your reviews, keep being yourselves, just make the sound accessible for your audience. Slainte!

If you think they are beating the Scots at their own game, then you must be high. No offense to Irish whiskey. Give me a Bruichladdich over this for the same price any day and twice on Sunday!
