- In this video, we look at the various components of an internal combustion (IC) engine cooling water system and how they work together to regulate the engine temperature.
The operating principle of the thermostat is explained using a 3D animation. A short overview is also given for the cooling water pump, thermostat, radiator, fan and overflow tank.
Note that the cooling water system and jacket water system are the same thing. The cooling water system shown is for a standard engine, this engine could me mounted in a car, truck, boat or just about anything else.
This video forms part of the Combustion Engine and Components playlist:

On a car the fan draws the air through the rad just as it would during forward locomotion. Generators and other static engines would push the air through.
Interesting. Thanks for this. I am more experienced with industrial equipment than automotive, that's why I put the fan as forced draft. But your comment is appreciated. I should have changed this to induced draft for the updated video, but it's already been recorded so just the model will be updated, not the video.

Great and very clear explanation....
Good
Thanks!
Best explanation ever 👍👍👍
Thanks! Appreciated.
So when running an 85deg thermostat in conjunction with a thermo controlled electric radiator fan with a digital controller, should I set the fan to come on at 95deg and off at 85deg??
At the moment I run an 85deg thermostat with a mechanical viscous fan and the temperature runs at a great quarter on the temp gauge. The thermostat opens just above quarter and I want to replicate this when I fit the digital controller and electric fan. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Please make video on lubrication system too.
Funny you mention this, I was hoping to try and get a video out for it in the next month, but it depends on how long it takes to finish modelling the interior of the crankshaft. Anyway, I will put it on the list. Thanks for your feedback!
waiting for the video :-)
Uploaded the first lubrication video. The one with the model animation is still being worked on.
i have a man diesel engine on a man bus,we removed the air con, there is a water pipe going in the engine and air con pipes coming out of engine can we close or what impact will it bring considering that we are no longer using the air con
could you kindly share with the 3D model? thanks.
is the air flows in correct direction?.. shouldn't it from front through radiator then hit the engine?..
The air flow is wrong.
It is correct if the radiator is in the rear of the car....😁
Yes am loking now
Can a dispel engine operate effectively if you remove the thermostat
No, the engine would overheat, especially at higher revolutions. You have to remove the heat from the combustion space otherwise the engine will get too hot. The engine has an optimum operational temperature and the thermostat is set to match this, without a thermostat, the engine will not be operating effectively/efficiently.
3D-knowledge thank you
Good.. Thanks..
You the man! Thanks for the feedback! :)
What is this awesome computer program you are using?
3D models are created in Blender or SolidWorks, the models are then displayed in a iFrame on your web browser. Creating the models and making them accessible online was a bit of a nightmare. The process was gradually improved though until we now have animations and the ability to create cross sections etc. 3D-knowledge was where it started but for various reasons I opened saVRee.com to try and make it easier for anyone who wants to teach or train with 3D models. The idea is simply to give educators and trainers everything they need to make great learning material, without the need to create all the 3D models etc. Sorry, I am digressing...
Thanks for the kind feedback and stay tuned for more! :)
Nice
Thanks!
Today removing thermo start bypass
Good luck! What are you trying to achieve by doing that though?
Thanks bro Hindi mein aur thoda achha se sammajh ata
