  • Two days of camping and hiking including the trail to the tallest peak in Texas - Guadalupe Mountain. I also include pictures from last year when it was snowing and the wind was so strong at the top I couldn't stand without being blown over.

This video brought back a lot of memories. In 1997 I did a trip here over spring break in April with 4 older Boy Scouts and 5 other adult leaders. It wasn't an official troop kind of trip but we had a group within the unit who were more interested in high adventure backpacking, it was more of a casual trip among friends during the school break. We camped at the base camp and in the back country. I do remember those long hikes on the rocky terrain and the exhilaration of making it to the top of Guadalupe Peak with only two others of our group as the rest gave up due to fatigue. My hiking days are over due to age and knee injuries but I enjoyed watching you hike those trails.

Chris - Glad my video brought back some good memories! Guadalupe Mountain National Park is a jewel so many people don't even know exists. I have visited twice and I hope I get to go a few more times before I give up hiking and camping. The hike to the top of Guadalupe Mountain is a lot longer than I thought but well worth the effort. I found the changes in the plants as you climb and the temperature falls was amazing. Thanks again for watching a couple of my videos and I hope some of the others bring back additional memories!

How long was the hike to the peak?

Round trip the hike is 8.4 miles and there is 3,000 feet of elevation gain with the peak at 8,751 feet. It is a great hike! Make sure to take enough water based on the time of year you go. I feel the switchbacks at the beginning are the most difficult (steepest). The views at the top are unique and spectacular! Good luck!
