Let's see if he has something to say about it... The Direct was not only clear and also this collection was like the "bonus track" of the remake announcement which was the main course :D
It's a mental connection I may not be able to make. I've been calling it Seiken Densetsu 3 for close to 25 years and have played through it over a dozen times. Hard to suddenly think of it as Trials of Mana. That and I don't think Trials quite had the zing to it that Secret does.
ChronoPhoenix :Actually it’s 24 years but still I agree that this game called Seiken Denestsu 3 is now called Trials of Mana deserves to be released in America.
No one else seems to ever remember this game. Sword of Mana is fucking FANTASTIC and is oddly the "newest" feeling game in the entire Mana franchise because of it being much more recent, with some modern (for its time) mechanics, while Adventure of Mana changed and added nothing (and actually took away all the new mechanics and visuals and characters from Sword) and made the game look and play like a really low budget cellphone game. And then the Secret of Mana remake did basically the same thing and didn't add a thing, other than bad 3D and worse music.
@WaVy Crockett #JizzBoss It doesn't play or feel like a Mana game at all and isn't part of the main series. It's a spinoff that shares more in line with Diablo and roguelikes that Mana games. Also, the multiplayer is the pits and magic is awful. That being said, I'm one of the few who didn't hate the game. I thought it was fun for what it was and it visually was great. That opening cutscene looked great on the DS.
@WaVy Crockett #JizzBoss If anything, that just furthers my point. You liked it more and didn't like the others as much. It's a very different game. A lot of people disagree. It isn't really a Mana game. I mean, it's about as much a Mana game as Theathrythm is a Final Fantasy game. Doesn't mean it's a bad game, it's just a very different spin-off.
StarDragonJP fun fact, Secret of Evermore was made completely by the US division of Square. The Japanese side had no idea it was being made until after the fact lol
Funny enough, Adventure of Mana marks the second time that Final Fantasy Adventure has been remade. It actually received a Game Boy Advance remake known as Sword of Mana.
U act like that would be a small easy thing. Thats a full big PS1 game! U could say what u said about the first game, like yeah jus toss it in there. But Legend of Mana is way more significant
I paid for the digital to play now. And I will pay for the physical when it releases on August. Loved the Treehouse presentation for Trial of Mana remastered. I love Seiken Densetsu 3
Just bought it on sale for 15 bucks + shipping. Going to wrap up Grandia 2 in March, and play Trials of Mana on this collection that month. Then Trials remake in April. I figured I should play the original first. I'm looking forward to it. I think Mana is fitting for spring anyways.
$29.99 is better price point for this. the total file size for this collection is less than 1 gig so they can use a rather small cart size wise for this.
Oh, man. My girlfriend and I were ALSO joking about Second Dendetsu! So much better than that First Dendetsu. Does that make Final Fantasy Adventure just... Dendetsu? Heh.
I think the price point is extremely high. Seiken Densetsu 3 is one of my favorites RPGs of all time with Terranigma and Chrono Trigger and it's great to see the original version finally translated (and not just some questionable quality remake)... but still, the price seems way too high if you see how much the nes or snes mini cost for example. Anyway for anyone that hasn't played any of the three games and it's against emulation, I guarantee you are going to have great times with these
Shatter Shot I'm certain that "against emulation" meant "against illegal emulation" which in turn means "wants to support companies with purchases." Probably didn't mean the literal take of "emulation" versus "original/authentic." The convenience of the games being on one cart is easily achievable with illegal emulation, so that's not really the point. Plus I don't know if this translation of SD3 is online anywhere yet so that's another bonus for scoring the collection.
You're getting three games from three different systems and Trials of Mana was never released in North America, meaning they had to translate it. It's got more than twice as much content as Secret of Mana. $40 is a very reasonable price.
I would rather wait for the full remake myself. I already have Secret of Mana 3 times. FFA I can live without. So paying $40/£35 on essentially 1 game isn't worth it for me, especially when the full remake of the same game will be roughly the same price. I am not paying over the odds for a nostalgia trip on the go.
Sword of Mana should have been included in this collect as far as I am concerned. So what, it was a remake. But it was basically a wholly different game when you compare the games side by side, and would have fit in really well with the others as it was a GBA release in the style of the 2 SNES games before it.
@@Mac_Omegaly I entirely agree. I get it that they were going with the "original" versions of all three but I think a lot less people are going to be insterested in playing the FFA version.
a tad? even if it were at $35 its still expensive. every single one of these companies loves to overcharge their games on the switch because they can (people buy them anyway). but i agree, as much as i want to try out trials of mana i will wait for a discount
Most 16 bit compilations are about $20. Megaman x 1 through 4, $20. Capcom beat em up, $20. Contra and castlevania, $20. This only gives you 3 games, and one is a gameboy game.
In my opinion it's really controversial... 40€ is way too much for what we get regarding quantity of old 2D games. BUT Seiken Densetsu 3 is one of the best games of 2D era. This is first time, that this fantastic game gets an official release in western countries. Summarized I'll go with the retail version of this great collection. The quality of the games is totally worth the price, IF you want to play the official version on your switch.
Didnt need to see the video. It's worth it. I bough it the day it dropped and it's amazing Trials of mana is worth the price alone. It's a treasure of a game
I wish they added Sword of Mana too. I will wait for a sale. I think they should've sold the games seperately and offered a bundle on the eshop for those who want this collection.
In Final Fantasy Adventure you can hit the walls with regular attacks and if they can be broken with the mattock then it will make a different sound. Its not random nor does it require a walkthrough. The mattock and key system is still very flawed though, since you can absolutely lock yourself inside a dungeon with no way out since the walls and locked doors close again if you walk too far away from them.
I quite liked Adventures of Mana. Granted, my first Mana game is Sword of Mana which is loosely based on the first - which I wish they did include as a bonus.
I saw the price too, it’s worth half the price if I am honest with you and for some weird reason we in the UK pay VAT “tax” on digital games on the eshop which makes absolutely zero sense because it’s digital.
I am actually surprised that Square Enix is releasing the third Mana game as Trials of Mana & not Secret of Mana 2. I remember reading in Nintendo Power back in the day that Squaresoft actually had plans to release the third Mana game as Secret of Mana 2 in 1996. That did not happen.
The first two you can emulate from a long time..the third one people have already extracted from the switch cart and you can emulate. Personally this is only worth picking up the physical copy for collectors..or waiting for the trials remaster.
9/10 very nice. I totally agree. This brought me back to middle school summers grinding out SD3 on a fan-subbed emulator like a hundred years ago and it’s been an absolute riot playing the whole collection again. Favorite childhood games and nostalgia aside, though, the time that it takes to complete just SoM or ToM alone means you’re spending like $0.25/hr to play it. If that’s not worth it for you then perhaps don’t get it lol. But as a fan of (most of) the Mana series, I think that Square-Enix needs to be rewarded when they do something right, and this merits a purchase. If they see that people are willing to spend money on the Mana games, they’ll make more like it in the future. If we stop buying the good games, then they start making low-budget stuff like Children of Mana on the DS and I would personally love to see the Mana series fully realized in the AAA glory that it used to know. TLDR: buy this shit
I beated Secret of Mana for PSVita and Switch(SuperNES). Secret of Mana for SuperNES, Mobile, Switch is abit harder than, Secret of Mana for PSVita, PS4 and PC.
Sword of Mana (GBA) is a re-imagine reboot of Final Fantasy Adventure (Seiken Densetsu 1) , wit Chocobo out of it. And has few more Of Mana characters added in.
Waiting on this video about this collection from you specifically to see if it’s worth it. Trust you and like your take on games. Thanks for doing this before I drop the cash. :)
I just bought ff7 and 9 for my Switch and anticipate to pick up Dragonquest 11 in September. I think I'll wait to purchase this later, but great review!
It's no rumor. Not only was there a trailer for it, they combined both Mana product trailers into one for the UK. And they teased us with a playable demo they went through! SO AWESOME!!!
I waited for the ps4 secret of mana remake to go on sale, I scooped this collection immediately tho. Trials of mana official release was too cool to wait for.
I think this is the first video I've seen of yours where you don't end nearly every sentence with the exact same tonal pattern. It's a refreshing change and shows you're improving as you continue to make videos. Your natural talking voice is way better than sounding like you are reading bullet points. Good stuff!
I had this collection on my wishlist on the Japanese eShop since last year. A part of me had some hope that it might release outside Japan, and I'm glad the wait paid off. 24 years later, and I'm finally able to throw money at Seiken Densetsu 3.
For me, no, this bundle isnt even close to worth $40. Maybe if it included the ps1 game legend of mana, but as it is, this bunfle is fully twice what id be willing to pay for it.
@@Ankhu86 it was a neat game. Tons of depth to it. Seriously flawed in a lot of ways, mind. Not as coherent or polished as the previous two games in the series on snes, but even its flaws were really novel and interesting. Shame its not in this collection.
malisteen : legend of mana is masterpiece . squareenix didn't put legend of mana in this collection of mana because it should also put dawn of mana (which is in full 3d and therefore takes even more space in the cartridge...) , sword of mana , children of mana , heroes of mana etc etc. they preferred to focus on the 3 best known in Japan .
I got it and being able to play Trials Of Mana or Secret Of Mana 2 on a 50 inch 4k tv its a dream come true. I played Trials on pc and on my phone but playing on a TV yes it was worth the 40 bucks just for that. I highly recommend getting this game especially if it ever comes on sale and I can't wait for the remake of Trials next year it looks amazing.
Personally I'm interested since I've heard the games have multiplayer, so I want to see how fun it would be as a multiplayer game, so this is probably on my watch list for the future.
It’s kinda crazy how this game got localized before Mother 3 but not too surprising at the same time, also I kinda don’t like the official translations small text font, it could be because I’ve played the heck out of the fan translation I’ve gotten used to the bigger text font in that one. Don’t get me wrong I love the new title for the official translation “Trials of Mana” a very fitting title given the game’s high replay value. I’d say I’d probably played through and beat this about 20 times or more. I’ve first started playing in 2010 and man has time flown by, that’s also the same year I started playing Secret of Mana off the Wii Shop Channel and fell in love with the Action RPG Style game and it’s real time gameplay.
I'm so happy to hear that you love the Final Fantasy franchise its my favorite RPG series to play. Refreshing to hear a content creator not bash on the FF franchise.
Ff adventure was remade as sword of mana on gba. I got this collection but the borders drive me insane...luckily they extracted the newly translated rom so I can play it on my supernt
FF Adventure and SoM will always be awesome classics to revisit and play again and again. Still, I think the collection is worth it for the official English release of Trials of Mana alone.
What I really wanna know is how well does multi-player work on the Switch? Can I still play Secret and Trials with couch co-op on a single device? If so then this will definitely be worth it.
How dare you o le give Collection of Mana a 9/10, it should be a perfect 10! Just kidding, thanks for the great review. I can't wait to get my copy this August.
It only has 3 of the games for $40? Pass... Castlevania & Contra Collections are $20 each & have 8 games. Square is ripping people off. Maybe if it had the GBA & DS/PSX games as well. I'll just wait for the Trials of Mana remake. In the meantime, I'll just play my OG cartridges & Wii VC versions.
Interesting fact: The German version of Secret of Mana had a very distinct translation. Claude M. Moyse (who is depending on who you ask famous or infamous) was responsible for it and tasked with a "funny" translation. Of course unlike in the english version the style was not kept at all for Trials. The German fantranslation however is very much in the spirit of Claude M. Moyse. So if you have the switch version and are unhappy with it because the style is so drastically different that there is no nostalgia, there's another way to go.
Loved Secret of Mana growing up. I bought the PS4 version and I enjoyed it. I thought the updates look was fine, I didn’t care for the new sound track tonight because I thought the original score was so good so I switched back to that. Overall I enjoyed playing it again, great review btw.
Fingers crossed they do the same thing with the Dragon Quest collection. It may require more work to maybe change the title screen from Warrior to Quest or they could just keep it for nostalgia sake. Whatever they choose so I can have them in one place.
I really want this but $40 is a lot for 3 games. Castlevania Collection was $20 for 8 games. Also after the Nintendo direct I got on my Switch saw you playing this. I was like “that was quick.”
I love that SD3 got an official release and localization, but I far prefer the fan translation, and would rather just buy an original SNES cart reproduction of that. This collection would have been worth it for me, though, if they had retranslated “Secret of Mana”, since the original Ted Woolsey translation cut a lot out. Also, I’m glad to see a reviewer who pronounces “Mana” the same way my sister and I do. I didn’t find out about the ‘official’ pronunciation until years later. It always sounded too Americanized for me, like that’s not how the Japanese say it.
Don't forget that Final Fantasy Adventure was also redone as Sword of Mana for GBA. That one seems to be a bit more in-line with the -Mana verse than that clip of.... whatever that was you showed in the video.
Im clueless about these games but interested. I noticed looking online there is like 8 mana games. Are these 3 the main games? Are the other games required to understand the story better?
I have always been a big big big big big fan of the FF/Mana games. & man oh man, i just saw it at Game Stop today browsing the Switch isle & bought it with no hesitation.
Seiken Densetsu 3 is finally getting a western release - that alone is support-worthy. Also, I am pretty sure that Seiken Densetsu 1 gives you enough in-game hints, IF you talk to the NPCs. I beat it as a kid without any guides.
@ 00:00:53 - Which is obviously "Sekken Dendetsu 3" :D @ 00:08:10 - "It is 40 dollers for three very old ports". The ports were first released June 2017 in Japan for the Switch. So they're not THAT old. But I get what you're trying to say.
I think they should've included the original SD remake sword of mana instead of ff adventure, it not only is a better game, but gets rid of everything ff related, along with having a similar art style compared to the other two games making a much more coherent collection
I don't have a switch, but the third game is really peaking my interest. As for Adventure of Mana, I might go black and white. I got the red on Super Gamboy (a device that lets you play on SNES).
Diehard fans like myself will pay any price to get their hands on SD3. For more casual fans or people who might even be looking at these games for the first time, it can be kind of hard to justify the price tag at first glance. But in terms of play hours, yes, you absolutely will be getting your money's worth. Secret of Mana in particular is a very grind-heavy game, and I'm not talking about just raw stats, but things like weapon and magic levels, and secret upgrade drops. Completionists will have a good time with it. Trials of Mana is EXTREMELY replay-friendly, with each play letting you select from 3 of 6 playable characters, each with 2 tiers of branching class changes. This assures that no 2 runs will be alike. There are even 3 different final bosses depending on who you choose. Also, it as some of the most gorgeous music of any RPG out there.
It's still kinda funny it took them so long to release this but I am glad its here!
Thanks for making this video. I've been debating about buying it for the high price.
Ty for the video. I just got this and playing for the first time

This collection brings me tear of joy during watching the trailer. It take me back to the most precious time with my brother.
My favorite of the series is sword of mana on gba, i wish it was a part of a collection
Sword of Mana is another remake of FFA and is much better actually
It's MUCH better than that turd, Adventure of Mana.
Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3) being released in the West for the first time FINALLY ALONE, is worth the $40 price tag imo
I quite liked Adventures of Mana. Granted, my first Mana game is Sword of Mana which is loosely based on the first - which I wish they did include as a bonus.
Your butchering of the name Seiken Densetsu hurts me.
Seken Detetsu lmao
I saw the price too, it’s worth half the price if I am honest with you and for some weird reason we in the UK pay VAT “tax” on digital games on the eshop which makes absolutely zero sense because it’s digital.
Yea, £35? no thanks.
I still have my original "Secret of Mana" cart for my Super Nintendo. I'll buy it strictly for "Seiken Densetsu 3".
Secret of Mana for SuperNES, Mobile, Switch is abit harder than,
Secret of Mana for PSVita, PS4 and PC.
"It is worth it if you are into the type of game!"
I am comfortable with saying that i am into this type of game!
Just a treasure of creation, the sort of creative care that makes video games special
100% would have passed on this if it was digital only. Physical release means they get my money.
This gives me hope for a Mother 3 official release
I agree
Larry :And guess what still no Mother 3 because Nintendo sucks compared to Square Enix when it comes to money.
I wish FF7 had a physical copy not only do I love "collecting" things but also I can't open eshop in he country I live in
It's no rumor.
Malisteen I love Legend of Mana!!!
@@Ankhu86 it was a neat game. Tons of depth to it. Seriously flawed in a lot of ways, mind. Not as coherent or polished as the previous two games in the series on snes, but even its flaws were really novel and interesting. Shame its not in this collection.
@Malisteen agreed wholeheartedly
malisteen : legend of mana is masterpiece . squareenix didn't put legend of mana in this collection of mana because it should also put dawn of mana (which is in full 3d and therefore takes even more space in the cartridge...) , sword of mana , children of mana , heroes of mana etc etc. they preferred to focus on the 3 best known in Japan .
Final Fantasy Adventure is not a Final Fantasy game. It was the first mana game which used the FF name in the west to help it sell more.
Literally a hour ago i got this game physically for 10$ talk about a steal
Ff adventure was remade as sword of mana on gba. I got this collection but the borders drive me insane...luckily they extracted the newly translated rom so I can play it on my supernt
FF Adventure and SoM will always be awesome classics to revisit and play again and again. Still, I think the collection is worth it for the official English release of Trials of Mana alone.
Just picked this up on sale for $20. Can't wait to play them all!
What I really wanna know is how well does multi-player work on the Switch? Can I still play Secret and Trials with couch co-op on a single device? If so then this will definitely be worth it.
aozgolo yes
These are much bigger games than all of those Castlevanias combined.
@Shaman X How does him seeing something not worth it's asking price reflect his intelligence? You must be very young.
Thank you for clarifying!!!! Nintendo Store left me more confused. Hopefully they make it more clear in the future.
i get that the one game is new in the west but $40 is a little steep,. might still pick it up tho down the road,.
It's the 3 first games in the series. And all have a stand alone story, so no.
@@danielpintogouveia5862 Ok cool. Think I might pick it up then. Thanks!
@ 00:00:53 - Which is obviously "Sekken Dendetsu 3" :D
@ 00:08:10 - "It is 40 dollers for three very old ports".
What about legend of mana.....
Legend of Mana is my favorite in the series. Lack of this is a deal breaker for me.
I don't have a switch, but the third game is really peaking my interest. As for Adventure of Mana, I might go black and white. I got the red on Super Gamboy (a device that lets you play on SNES).
Just bought this on Amazon for 30 bucks! Super excited
SD3 is such a gorgeous game. One of the best looking SNES games for sure. And the remake actually looks pretty decent!
40 Bill's for a physical would be straight. If anything the digital should be 20 25 Bill's tops
truska4life my fathers name is Bill you jerk
I played Secret of Mana on the SNES, I played Seiken Densetsu 3 on an Emulator. Yes, it's worth the price!
Played 3 back in the day and I loved it. Also secret of Mana is my favorite snes game instill have my cart from when I was a kid. Good memories.
