Is Nick Sirianni a "Lame Duck" Head Coach?

  • The Eagles offseason practices might have come to an end, but that has not stopped the speculation about the Birds winners and losers from a very exciting Minicamp week. Kelee Ringo, Saquon Barkley, Isaiah Rodgers and John Ross are just a few of the Eagle players who stood out this week. However, James Bradberry and Nakobe Dean made the list of players who did not really help themselves. Also, what should fans make of Jalen Hurts’ comments yesterday regarding Nick Sirianni? Is Sirianni a “Lame Duck” Head Coach with no real power like some are indicating or will the Birds flourish under his leadership in 2024?

    Please do not become like the regular Philly media and create drama about the coach for no reason. He’s not a lame duck because the team respects him….he simply delegates which every team needs. Every great leader does it. His success is evident.

    Yes! He was supposed to be an offensive strategist, instead he’s a liability being rebranded as a “relationship guy” who is at the mercy of his coordinators. If Moore does well he will take a HC job and Jalen will be learning ANOTHER new offense next year. He needs consistency to produce consistently. This kind of turnover every year isn’t sustainable.

    Hey Thomas, shoutout from Brazil. 🇧🇷 To add context: the stadium that we are playing, is from soccer club Corinthians. And their main rivals is Palmeiras, a club that primarily uses a green kit. As Jacobs said, he was misinformed and this will not be an issue. He also said about not coming to Rio, but the game will be played in Sao Paulo and there are no gang rivalry there. The Eagles - and the Packers - have a lot of fans here in Brazil as we are very excited about the season opener, and we hope to welcome you guys here, as we did in 2014 for the World Cup and in 2016 for the Olympics. I mean imo he is very much a fundamentals coach who builds a good atmosphere and brings energy to the team while having a great understanding of the game. He has never really been a scheme guy, or brought much creativity. I think the fact that the Eagles have always had scheme guys who bring creativity + Sirianni's lack of ability to talk to the media makes us Eagles fans think he does nothing....
    The truth is.. He is not a coach that can scheme his way out of a collapse, or make crazy half time adjustments to win a game.. But he is a coach that will keep a winning team disciplined, focused and bring energy+momentum to any success. And now that we seem to have coordinators that can scheme, be creative and right the ship whenever needed... I think the coaching staff is excellent..

  • @andrewwagner9288
    @andrewwagner9288 26 дней назад +3

    If we learned anything about sirianni the past year it’s that he is not the offensive or defensive genius. He’s a vibes guy. He’s the one that brings the team together motivates and sets goals for the team. There are plenty of head coaches like this across the league. Is it for the best hard to say but coaches that are offensive or defensive minded and get promoted to hc don’t always do the best and their scheme gets figured out. Ocs and dcs change and come with new schemes that mix things up. I don’t know if we change sirianni if it changes anything the oc and dc are running their teams and he’s giving them the freedom to do that and working with howie and everyone to build cohesion with the team. I don’t think we see it much but I definitely think he’s a motivator behind the scenes and we see his passion from time to time. I think he knows the players well knows how to motivate them or drive them and that’s important! He doesn’t need to be a genius but if he keeps the team together pushes the team culture the chemistry comes and the team is better for it than having conflict over how he wants things done. Wishing him the best but I think another bad season fans are really going to be coming for his head

    A brazil eagles fan here. The reason why you shouldn't wear green is because of the soccer teams rivalry. The NFL game in brazil will be played at Corinthians stadium NEO Quimica Arena and, Corinthians' biggest rival is Palmeiras which has green as the main colour. Because the rivalry is so intense between these two soccer teams no green clothes are allowed in Corinthians stadium. There is nothing to do with gangs or what so ever

    Nick's job really is hard to define, as any head coach's. They are arguably the most important part of the team other than the QB. The moment I think a head coach fails is when he actively brings his team's morale down and/or when he actively brings his team's performance down. The reason I don't fault him a ton for last year, while he still played a role in it, was because he really got boned over by his staff on both sides of the ball getting poached away when they had finally built something great, worthy of a SB run. They really tried to just run it back with new coordinators but as we saw that was a nightmare. Steichen and Gannon both deserve way more credit for what they were able to do, and if Nick had his way we were going to try to bring Fangio in here last year but we were too late because of the Arizona/Gannon tampering during the playoffs. We had slim pickings for coordinators to be honest, the idea was to promote from within the system for offense with BJ and on defense they went and got what was available as far as someone who was familiar with the Fangio philosophy so they got one of Fangio's guys who learned under him in Desai. We were clearly desperate, and Nick had no say in what happened with Gannon and Steichen taking HC jobs that's just what happens when you have two great young coordinators and make a SB run. Despite all this Nick kept the team together enough so that Cox and Kelce can both retire honorably and have a proactive game plan of replacing that talent. Keeping guys like them, BG, Lane, and all these young dudes who signed long term with us recently like Dickerson and Smitty for quick examples. Guys wanna be here even though we're bringing in an old fashioned hard*ss for defense in Fangio who is gonna put them through hell, and Moore who is one of the most genius guys involved in coaching at any level. It's gonna definitely be a challenge but if these players truly buy in because of people like Nick you're gonna see why the 'lame duck' thing is such a bad label. In terms of being a head coach he's changing the way other orgs do things... especially that shooting hoops with prospects to gauge their passion and competitiveness. That is fantastic. He's a bit of a sh*t talker but I've learned to embrace it and enjoy it while we have it here. First time in Eagles history this org has deserved the right to talk some sh*t! Been pretty dominant since the turn of the century and Nick is part of the reason we're gonna keep making runs while the rest of the division chokes on our farts.

    Have you ever been in an organization where a specialist or skilled worker moves on to management? They usually are involved in the details for a bit until they phase themselves out and focus on bigger picture stuff. I just don't know why this keeps getting brought up when the players have been pretty consistent on saying they like his process and style. Its almost like philly media wants him to Kyle Shanahan.

    I'd be all for Sirianni as the "motivator" and doing whatever he does if not for losing our playcallers if the team does well. I'm guessing Moore improves the offense to near Steichen levels with the crazy talent we have on offense and without the dumb playcalling, and as a result of the great improvement in offense he probably leaves to be a head coach elsewhere, and then the revolving door of new coordinators/offenses continues. At the same time, could the eagles actually fire sirianni after a good season to keep moore , with sirianni as the eagles winningest head coach ever? Eagles front office would not look like a great place for future coaches for outsiders after firing its winningest coach. This is the downside of having a "motivator" as head coach that seems to be a poor decision maker in terms of scheme and play calling: have a great season due to quality scheme/play calling and lose it the next year

    My guess is that if Kellen Moore's offensive gameplan proves to be effective that Nick will keep and add to it for the next OC. If he truly wants to keep his job he will learn everything he can about the philosophy so he's able to implement it in the future if Kellen Moore isn't around. Just because you're a head coach...that doesn't mean you just stop learning from those around you.
    The best case scenario would be that the offense does great and Kellen would rather stick around and perhaps be promoted to assistant head coach. I know he has interviewed for head coaching positions in the past, but there could be the allure of being the coordinator and assistant head coach of a championship caliber team rather than becoming a head coach for a struggling franchise. Maybe a promotion and a pay raise will be enough to keep him around.
    As it pertains to how Jalen handled the Siriani question...it was a bit awkward. Winning will probably make that awkardness go away though. With almost everything changing offensively it's hard to say whether it's changing because Nick wasn't allowing them to do certain things or Jalen just wasn't doing them because he wasn't comfortable.
    Thus far in his career Jalen has typically used little to no motion no matter who his coaches have been. Doug had plenty of motion in the offense when Wentz was under center. Everything changed when Hurts became the starter and has looked largely the same up until now after firing Doug and hiring Nick. It still looked the same when Shane took over playcalling though they had more success. Year after year no matter who was calling plays there was a noted lack of utilizing motion. I have a hard time believing that none of his prior coaches...including the ones in college...just decided to not include a pivotal component in offensive gameplanning. The common denominator I see here is Hurts. I suspect that a lot of the 95% new stuff he's talking about directly relates to this. Changing the way he reads defenses and uses motion to diagnose coverage and/or create mismatches.
    Time will tell if he's able to overcome what appears to have been a career long limitation of his. I for one hope he's able to. He's the perfect fit for the QB of our birds. But the pressure is on him to learn to do these new things effectively...otherwise we could be looking at trading him. With the amount of money invested in this offense there is almost no room for failure.

      A classic chicken or the egg. The offense last year appeared to lack any imagination, predictable to the point of being boring. Who was ultimately responsible for the inability to deal with the constant blitz's DC's threw at Jalen, the QB, the OC or the HC? I think your post is spot on, with the talent on the offense way too many three and out.

    My 2 cents....Nick will be fine now that he has experienced coordinators. I spent many years in industry before retiring and I saw may otherwise good and popular managers make the same mistake Nick made, - a big strength becoming a big weakness. Specifically, I am talking about loyalty. Nick is very popular with his players, for this reason and because they know he has their back. The down side of loyalty, is excessive loyalty. This almost always results in being way too hesitant to pull the plug on friends and/or young mangers, who are not doing the expected job. These are typicallyindividuals who were given a development opportunity..... Such managers believe these people can grow into their responsibility, if they are given just "a little more time". Some times it works, and sometimes it doesn't (as we saw last year)!

    The only reason they fire Sirrianni is it would show a trend of firing SuperBowl coaches. And then who would want to come here as a head coach. So they got rid of coordinators and position coaches and replaced them people who knew what they were doing.Even if the team looked good would you want to coach here knowing if you won a SuperBowl you could be canned if you weren't a yes man? Plus you saw the play calling last year. Both the offense and defensive calls were herendous. Look for Moore to be head coach next year. Otherwise I don't anyone else would want to gamble coming here.

    Nick really needs to go to Dale Carnegie, if he can't express what value he brings to the team- the team is going to view the OC/DC as their leader.

  • @BillDozer316
    @BillDozer316 26 дней назад

    The problem with Nick's position is it doesn't create any continuity. Every time this offense does well, which is so loaded it's hard not to do well, our OC gets poached and it's on to starting fresh again. I think that really irritates Jalen at this point. Remember, 2022 was the SECOND year of Shane Steichen. Continuity gives the offense a real opportunity to MASTER the offense.

    Sirianni making sure is on the same page as coaches and groups is correcting a massive mistake from last year. New OC and new DC. He needs to be on their page.

    The problem I have with Nick, let's be honest here, is that he is not a good coach, but the team around him is so great talent-wise. So, what happens when, hopefully, if everything goes well, we go to the divisional round, NFC championship game, or Super Bowl? Kellen Moore will be interviewed for a head coaching job, and now we have a new offensive coordinator. He's already had four offensive coordinators. That's my issue with him. You're an offensive-minded head coach, but you don't call plays. That's my biggest complaint.
