Call Me Crazy... but this is not easy!

  • This is not easy! Bending the sides of an acoustic guitar is a delegate operation. The acoustic guitar requires thin sides to shape the lower and upper bout. The guitar sides are reduced in thickness to ease the stress created during the heating and bending process. All luthiers pay special attention when bending the guitar sides to match the shape of a guitar form because they know this is not easy and broken or scorched sides represent a huge waste of money.

    When jointing the two boards for the glue up, run them through together. Lay them down and line them up with your chalk lines. Then put them together like you are closing a book. Now run them through at the same time. This way if you are not at a perfect 90 degrees to the blade you will still have a perfect joint since the imperfection will be mirrored on both pieces. Saves time and creates a very tight joint.

    • @MontyMcKinnon
      @MontyMcKinnon  5 лет назад

On the wood hardness scale Cherry is about 995, Rosewood 1780 and Katalox 3660. I know you were talking about 'tone woods'. I read somewhere tonally Katalox is similar to Ebony. 6:46 The equipment looks really complex. I thought all that was required to create the curve for the sides of a guitar was the entrapment on the left, I'm guessing it works in combination with the heavy equipment on the right, to hold each side in place, which means each side has to be done individually? Monty in the 6:00 video clip, do you have both the camera audio AND the mic audio on? Sounds a little like there's a phase cancellation going on at some points. If that is the case, your video editing software might let you invert one of audio tracks or you can just mute the cam audio. Of course testing both and deciding which sounds your favourite is the way to go.

    @maciej.muller 5 лет назад +1

    Monty, could you explain the inch "reading" from your measure tools comparing it to the centimeters scale? What does it mean for example 88 1000th's? I found the explanation only for the "16" divisions of an inch in the internet and it's kind of tricky to transfer it on the metric scale in my head;)

    • @MontyMcKinnon
      @MontyMcKinnon  5 лет назад +1

      Oh boy...I'm not sure I can. ⅛ of an inch is 125/1000 and 1/16 of an inch is 62.5/100 of an inch. The metric calliper allows one to track mm, 1000th of an inch and less. By dealing with shell that is about 55/1000 of an inch I know it is less than 1/16 of an inch. Does any of what I just said make sense. I need to go and find a better way to explain this.

    Great video. And I love the tea banter at the end. Being a Proud Yorkshireman from the UK I love my tea 👍😁
    If Peter won't take your word for it maybe he'll listen to Sean Bean. Keep up the good work Monty and check out this Yorkshire Tea as which is running in the UK at the moment. 👍😁
