Call Me Crazy... but this is not easy!

- This is not easy! Bending the sides of an acoustic guitar is a delegate operation. The acoustic guitar requires thin sides to shape the lower and upper bout. The guitar sides are reduced in thickness to ease the stress created during the heating and bending process. All luthiers pay special attention when bending the guitar sides to match the shape of a guitar form because they know this is not easy and broken or scorched sides represent a huge waste of money.

"It's so good I want to sell my kids"
© Monty McKinnon 😂
Did I hear it right? If I did it will be one of the funniest quotes I ever heared on RUclips 😂😂 I like this kind of humor!
I just can't help feeling like there is some history behind this funny saying, just a hunch
You heard it right. That’s just plain hilarious! Peter’s getting the boot 😂
Yes I actually did say that. Lol
@@MontyMcKinnon I'll give you $5 and a fresh cup of tea for Peter
"that is so good I want to sell my kids!" You hear that Peter?
I hope not!!! lol
"Subscribers take longer vacations".... LOL, love it Monty !!!!!!
Thank you so much! lol
“Subscribers take longer vacations” 🤣 also the music at 3:05 is perfect 👌🏻 reminds me of the musical interludes on the movie midnight in paris
Thank you so much. My subscribers are awesome!!!!
Nice.
Monty, IMHO you should feature Pete's RUclips Channel on yours - Pete, help him out! Love how you two say "out" and "about"!!
I am not sure how to do that or if he would want me to do that. I'll ask him next time i see him. Thanks for the suggestion.
Ooh, that’s such beautiful rosewood! Would love to get my hands on some of that! 🤩
I want more of it myself.
Monty, your son better step up his game. Your channel is dope!!!!! Subscribed.
Thank you so much. I'll tell me to try and catch me. lol
Another great video Monte 😊
Thank you so much
One thing I would like to see is videos of you covering songs, it really doesn't matter which ones, but just an idea.
Oh that would be interesting.
Love the determination to creating this video content Monty! Looking forward to seeing this fished product!
Thank you so much. I just can't give up. There is always a workaround for every problem.
What a relaxing start to the day! Watched this on the train to work...now for a brew
Enjoy the ride...it's only going to get better.
Delightful. 💕
Thank you so much. I appreciate that.
Very interesting. Enjoy seeing the process.
Just wait until next week...wow.
Thank you!
Another great video! I love the colour of this wood as well. I’ve always been a fan of the darker grained guitars
It is an amazing colour and the smell in wild
Shouts from Bradford, Yorkshire. Where Yorkshire tea is brewed everyday :)
Oh Chris, I am so jealous. Enjoy a cup for me. lol
“So good I want to sell my kids” That’s gold! 😂
That rosewood is going to look beautiful
I wonder if I could get enough money for my kids to buy more wood to make another guitar? lol
Monty McKinnon it’s worth a shot lol
Who in the world would give these videos a dislike?
Maybe a coffee drinker who play banjo? Doesn't matter most people like them. lol
#LiveYourPassion Marty you are just the best, I really like your RUclips channel !! Love the beautiful guitars. 🌞🚐🇺🇸 What happened when Peter got the tea when he ordered coffee.
He refused the tea and ordered coffee. lol
I really, really love your channel. Funny thing is my two loves (hobbies) are photography and playing the guitar. I found your channel because of your son (the one you're selling for tea). I look forward to watching both of you. I am indebted to Peter for letting us know about you. I guess I need to break open the piggy bank, because I don't have the equipment in your shop.
worst case...head to your local music store and pick up a guitar, take some lessons and write some music. You can do it.
Nice one monty!
Perhaps you should market your own Monty Tea Brand. Lol so good I should sell my kids 😂😂😂
Actually, that thought has crossed my mind.
you make very nice informative video thanks for sharing them 👍👍
Thank you so much.
I just found your channel today and subscribed. I'm a longtime guitar enthusiast and basement builder as well about to embark on my third build. You're right: it's not easy. I have to borrow tools from friends or go over to their place and use things like that Jet 16-20 thickness sander. The rest I try to do with hand tools and homemade jigs.
PS: I had no idea who your son was so I had to go back and look. I was wondering how you got such good audio and lighting. LOL, I must be living under a rock but I now I know!
Sweet and keep using that jet. I have the 10-20 and wish I had bought a wider one. I love Jet but they won't ship to Canada. Apparently, there is another Jet company in Canada. My answer...so what...lol
true efforts...
adding a nice BGM blend with a melody of smooth narrations..
adding intrinsic changes..
gives the pleasure of enjoying Tea..
You just nailed it! lol
I know this video will be awesome!👍
Monty, you are one awesome guy, it would be amazing to met you one day✌️🏽❤️
You are very kind. Thank you!
The colors are really deep on that. Looking good. I want to sand an refinish my camping guitar that dark.
Enjoy the tea and thank you Monty.
Most welcome!
Bagus sekali,,,
Greetings!
Awesome Monty. Love your approach, and by all means sell off your kids, darn fufu coffee drinkers! Great job and awesome set ;)
lol...thank you.
Great video as usual 👍🏼
Thank you so much!
So that one kid is up for sell first . The one , you know which one and his sinful coffee.
Lol, love the videos. .
I think he might sell me first! lol
🤣 shots fired @petermckinnon
Only, he is way faster than me so, let's see is wisdom can present a challenge.
When jointing the two boards for the glue up, run them through together. Lay them down and line them up with your chalk lines. Then put them together like you are closing a book. Now run them through at the same time. This way if you are not at a perfect 90 degrees to the blade you will still have a perfect joint since the imperfection will be mirrored on both pieces. Saves time and creates a very tight joint.
good advice and I normally do that. I was going after a small chip and the boards were not the same width. I usually tape them then head to the jointer. Thanks for your suggestion. I appreciate it and welcome your ideas and suggestions. Thank you.
@@MontyMcKinnon That makes complete sense. Love learning new things from your channel. Really looking forward to the bending.
I have that same jointer
It does the job. Not the greatest but adequate for my needs.
Now, now . . . I've been drinking tea for 50 years . . . all those years . . . ignorant of the beautiful flavour and aroma of fresh ground coffee. Cheers. Look forward to the bending.
Monday is the day we bend the sides. At least one of them.
Subscribers take longer vacations!?!?
GENIUS MARKETING! You're awesome!
Thank you I appreciate your support!
DId someone already order this one ... I can do a review when you are done ...then ship it back ..LOL ..truly you make me eager to see the final product !! I love it ..subscribers Live longer !!
They do and wait until next week when you see me bend the side. It is perfect...I mean perfect. I'm excited. lol
@@MontyMcKinnon SWEET !!
Grait video. Before I don't realize that I can build guitar in my garage with tools I aleredy have! Thanks for that 👍
You better head out and buy some strings. Sounds like you'll need them soon!
Your channel and vibe reminds us of a TV show on SKY TV called The New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram. Russell is a guitar player and loves acoustic guitar, so your channel he finds very interesting... Thank you Monty for what your doing, it was Russell’s other love (Photography) that brought us to your channel, you as your son are so talented... amazing 👍
Thank you and I will work hard to keep you here.
great stuff !!! love the humor, but i am a coffee guy so tread lightly lol.
No problem...or my son will knock my block off. lol Coffee drinkers are most welcome here. lol
Nice video man!
Thank you. I keep trying. lol
The Rosewood looks amazing. I just started using Katalox for some small projects. The stuff is so hard it's like sanding a brick.
I am not familiar with that. Where do you find it?
@@MontyMcKinnon I found it at a lumber yard down here in Ohio. They sell quite a bit of exotic wood. It's also called Mexican Royal Ebony. On the wood hardness scale Cherry is about 995, Rosewood 1780 and Katalox 3660. I know you were talking about 'tone woods'. I read somewhere tonally Katalox is similar to Ebony. I'm not making guitars yet. Just some small crafts with my son. It's extremely rough on the tools.
You should make a video about how different components of the guitar affects the tone?!
Wow, I never thought of that. Good idea!!! Thanks,
LOL!!!! 07:41 :D "so good I want to sell my kids". HA! Too funny.
that thought has crossed my mind. lol
6:46 The equipment looks really complex. I thought all that was required to create the curve for the sides of a guitar was the entrapment on the left, I'm guessing it works in combination with the heavy equipment on the right, to hold each side in place, which means each side has to be done individually? That's cool!
The sell your kids part, i was drinking water, and it definitely went down the wrong way! Lol (w/pain)
sorry about the water. That's my dry sense of humour. lol
Thank you sekuru for such a nice video. I have begun to appreciate my guitar more knowing how they are made. Maybe soon I will buy a Mckinnon Guitar and have it shipped to Zimbabwe.
There's a plan. lol
I made my cup of tea just before starting this video. In South Africa, we have a specific kind of tea that we drink with milk and sugar, no idea what the blend is called, but its a lot like English Breakfast tea. Enjoy! Lighting already looks good! Hope the lights come in soon!
We are up and running.
Monty in the 6:00 video clip, do you have both the camera audio AND the mic audio on? Sounds a little like there's a phase cancellation going on at some points. If that is the case, your video editing software might let you invert one of audio tracks or you can just mute the cam audio. Of course testing both and deciding which sounds your favourite is the way to go.
No, I'm not sure it could be the position of the mic.
Hello, Mr. McKinnon another good video. I wanted to ask you something but if you don't want to answer it's ok I understand. But you might have mentioned before but you said you don't play the guitar anymore because you shake. Why do your hands shake?
Hi, It is a tremor in my hands called Essential tremor. They can't give me any drugs because I am a cardiac and cancer graduate. They did suggest laser brain surgery but my family says no to that. So we'll just wait and see. I will never give up looking for something though.
@@MontyMcKinnon I used to be a truck driver came home one weekend to get a physical. and told me I could not drive truck no more 20 years. So I decided to go to school its been rough for me all my family is gone just me. thanks for talking with me.
Love your sense of humor!1!
Thank you so much.
Great video! I love the music selection too. I've only broke one bandsaw blade before too, it's kinda scary when it happens :).
Are you going to be selling the guitar your building In the video?
"Subscribers live longer" hahaha love it
Why not the metric system when building guitars?
I do use metric in some areas. But remember, I'm old...likke really old and grew up on Imperial. I keep trying though. lol
Monty, could you explain the inch "reading" from your measure tools comparing it to the centimeters scale? What does it mean for example 88 1000th's? I found the explanation only for the "16" divisions of an inch in the internet and it's kind of tricky to transfer it on the metric scale in my head;)
Oh boy...I'm not sure I can. ⅛ of an inch is 125/1000 and 1/16 of an inch is 62.5/100 of an inch. The metric calliper allows one to track mm, 1000th of an inch and less. By dealing with shell that is about 55/1000 of an inch I know it is less than 1/16 of an inch. Does any of what I just said make sense. I need to go and find a better way to explain this.
@@MontyMcKinnon Thanks a lot! Now I know more or less what are we talking about! That is still hard to understand why are you dividing inch on 16 parts, instead of some round number, for example 10 or 20 - but I get it - world just works like this! :) Thank you for explanation - have a good day.... and tea!
Pete, Can you help your dad with an over the bench camera?
I have a camera. Now you got me thinking how to rig it for overhead. Thanks for that.
🤣The little shots fired back and forth are hilarious!
Did you make the forms you are going to use?
Yes, I did. I bought the bender though...I was just a bit lazy. lol
And Gloves on Chemicals... Come on Old School... Safety First
I agree but like most sometimes I get lazy. Trying to do too much.
But what if... I drink coffee with tea flavor or even better tea with coffee flavor.
You would like throw up! lol
Wow you Canadians really pronounce "jointer" oddly. Sounds like you say "planer" but I figured it's just a Canadian thing, ay?
Ben Schlea hmm, I heard jointer. Not sure I understand
Yes, we are different that's why we go Out and About! lol
Let's get yourself some Ear Protection... No need to damage ears
Ha , at this point in one's life , hearing loss is a blessing . Yes dear. Ughumm , yup , yup. Oh my , yes dear.
I have no idea what she was talking about.
I have hearing aids and they plug my ears. I can turn them up or down.
Beat that sucker until it goes blue! 🤣🤣🤣
Well, it is just a button...lol Thanks for being here.
@@MontyMcKinnon my pleasure Sir. ☺
Great video. And I love the tea banter at the end. Being a Proud Yorkshireman from the UK I love my tea 👍😁
If Peter won't take your word for it maybe he'll listen to Sean Bean. Keep up the good work Monty and check out this Yorkshire Tea as which is running in the UK at the moment. 👍😁
