Cosette in the book is young, pretty, innocent, and dainty -exactly how Amanda's voice is. Amanda herself said she lacked training and thinks her voice was so weak in the movie. She was so humble and wiling to learn and doesn't deserve the hate y'all give. She hit those high notes so effortlessly all the while looking like a goddess. As much as Samantha and Anne's voice are ideal for broadway which is strong and loud (both are incredible and I love them), I think the movie made the right choice for Cosette to have that high butterfly-like voice that makes her distinct and more realistic as a blooming young lady.
except cosette is the classic Broadway leading lady, and she's actually written to sound more like a broadway golden age leading lady/love interest (kind of toned down classical/operatic soprano, but still with a strong and well placed voice. Sweeter than pure opera but not fragile!) than what she sounds like in the film! If it was a different score, I'd completely agree, but to me it's odd to hear such a delicate voice singing these songs hahaha
@@bethgarcia1838 they borrowed a lot from the book version of Cosette because the stage version is such a bland and paper thin character. Amanda has the exact voice Cosette has in the book. It’s kind of a right actor at the wrong time situation imo
I think all of you are right in different ways. I wish the book Cosette did sound like that but what just flew into my mind from the book is that the author said about (child) Cosette that the people all called her the Lark "except that the poor lark never sang". I don't know if the eighteen-year-old Cosette sang or not. If she did, it might have sounded like Amanda (sort of). We can't really know for sure though.
One of the few things I never liked about the musical of Les Mis is that they made grown up Eponine seem wonderful while making grown up Cosette seem like almost nothing. Book Eponine was creepy and book Cosette was a nice person and a much more rounded out character than we ever see in *any* musical version.
Book Eponine seduced Marius deliberately because she thought that by finding out what sex was like then she would find out what love was like. She did not love him or anyone. Probably not even her own family (who are the Thenardiers by the way even though we only briefly see that in the stage musical and even less in the movie, if at all in the movie). Musical Eponine is a good girl but Marius just never noticed her because he only had eyes for Cosette, and unfortunately we can hardly see why because they don't show the real her except in childhood which was ten years before Marius met her.
The fact that you didn't understand her situation until it was put into a movie is a sign of your lack of intelligence/comprehension and has nothing to do with the musical itself.

Samantha Barks played Éponine in the London production of Les Mis at Queens threatre for a year. She was one of the best trained for the role of any of the cast. You can watch videos of her singing in the live stage production.
I've watched this film so many times because I absolutely love the music and hearing these amazing voices from the actors; Les Misérables is a film that one can never tire of.
There's very few musical movies that actually stand up to the theatre performances, but I would say that the Les Mis movie is definitely one of them! My heart belongs to Lea Salonga, Michael Ball, Philip Quast, etc., but the cast of the movie worked incredibly well together and were able to tell the story in an awe-inspiring way. It's a different way any stage performance, but it's still amazing
i’ve never seen this movie but i can’t tell u how many times i’ve listened to anne’s i dreamed a dream she couldn’t have done it better. literally did exactly what she intended and poured her whole heart and character into the song making it sound NEW i cry so easily listening coz u feel what she’s saying. it’s so heartbreaking
I never knew they sang live!! How impressive this is, because the staffs and the director managed to control the echos and other external factors that could disrupt the audio being recorded clearly. Such a masterpiece!
I think he did a great job for his capacities though. He's a great Javert of his own and obviously they had to rearrange the vocality of the character based on his few techinque, but even with that light, half-voiced sound, he manages to give the character his consistency and you can tell he always feels the songs' lyrics as he does with lines. Anyway, the same exact thing happened with Eddie Redmayne's Marius songs if you focus on the timbres he uses, but it appears to me that everyone's being more benevolent towards him and adversing Russell Crowe instead.
In terms of production, this is THE BEST movie musical I've ever seen. I LOVE how they produced this and allowed them to sing live. The cast was amazing and the whole movie is incredible. I was in tears by the end, it was so good!
@Taljaardt Mostert then list them! Otherwise, keep your negative opinions to yourself and don't bring others down for enjoying a movie and sharing positive feedback.
@@Matt_Hatt3r I understand you enjoyed the film but from a musician stand point it was really a nightmare to produce. Like for instance Jack didn't drink water for weeks before filming, which is like setting a piano on fire and cutting the stings. And this isn't the option of a dude who has watched one video this is the option of a musician of over 11 years. Please watch Sideways' video on Le Mis and you'll understand what I mean.
@Taljaardt Mostert and Anne ate Oatmeal paste to get super skinny for her part, and Hugh Jackman didn't sleep before the intro scene/number. That's what actors do to convincingly portray their characters. Production of it may have been a strain, but the final product is an outstanding movie with wonderful singing (maybe Russel is an exception, but he tried).
Right so I watched this on the plane and I cry pretty effortlessly at emotional scenes in shows/movies. To say I was sobbing in my seat next to my mother while a stranger looked at me in horror was an understatement. I was at “I dreamed a dream” just falling to pieces and my mum was like “oh my god! Are you ok?”, slightly laughing I might add. When I was like “no! It so sad”. My mom was just like “has she died yet?” And my voice caught on another sob, “SHE DIES?!”. My mom just laughed and explained to the gentleman what I was watching lol great movie.
It's strange seing this because recently (when I posted this comment) Amanda says how much she regretted this because she felt like her singing was "weak" at the time, and that she would do it again if she had the chance, as she feels like her voice is ready now.
It wasn't. Especially not when you consider under what circumstances they were singing- they kept starving and dehydrating themselves to look good on screen and then had to sing on top of that. It was pretty dangerous, actually.
This is similar to how they filmed musicals back when sound technology was very new. Before the idea of using "playback" was invented and sound mixing was primitive there would be a large orchestra behind the camera playing the music live for the actors to perform along to... its pretty cool seeing Hollywood revisiting film history...
In Finland we have this saying ”to climb up a tree arse first”, and the way this film was recorded really sounds like a perfect example of that. Recording an orchestra on top of a vocal track that doesn’t even follow a fixed tempo is _insanely_ difficult. Like the benefits outlined by the cast and crew here are really small compared to the problems it creates. I hope the musicians were paid handsomely for their job.
Read the book, then saw the stage play which was just so beautifully done. This film did not get the attention it deserved. The performances were brilliant. I think musicals are not taken seriously in Hollywood.
When my mom and I watched this years ago, the first thing we said was that Anne had to win an Oscar for her role as Fantine and we were so glad she did
Very good...Les Miz is one of my All time musicals......saw it with the Oreginal Broadway Cast in 1984..... Saw it about 7 times.......all over..... 10 Stars......
How fascinating to hear the process in creating this beautiful performance. I was first introduced to Les Mis in HS choir and then as a class heard it live for the 1st time in 1990. I saw it several more times over the yrs. It’s something that just never leaves u…❤
seriously .. singing live makes all the difference : very moving and vibrant. I love that version of Les Miserables. Amazing music (that'll stay in my head for long)... and great acting though: Crowe, Hathaway, Baron Cohen/Bonham Carter, Jackman... oh and Redmayne that I discovered more recently in Stephen Hawking movie. Cannot go wrong! Well done to all the team; I'll watch that movie again...!
Watched this on its release date which was Christmas i think and it was heart breaking, and realistic And simply so well down and i never understood the hate it got for the live singing because while i am not a singer myself, as an audience member i just felt like the emotions of what these characters were experiencing was portrayed better. I enjoyed this musical and still consider it one of the best !!
There are great, beautiful moments in this movie. There are also really bad, cringeworthy “oof” moments. Your mileage on whether the choice to have the actors sing live worked may vary. My opinion is that if they were going to choose the live singing option, some of the actors should have been replaced with those who had better vocal stamina.
@@janaharing6600 I think Russell actually did a solid job. Was he Phillip Quast or Norm Lewis ? Noooo. But I do think his voices was far better suited to Javert than Hugh was to Valjean.

I get why I feel so touched by the movie now. they sing it in the exact moment they are acting so they sound so real, so natural. they are all amazing performers both in acting and singing. I really appreciate the casting
I know lots of them are giving flawed performances but I also think musical theatre fans (of which I am one) need to accept that their are multiple ways to give an amazing performance. And perfect singing isn’t the only way
I think people are mad because the excuse people give them is "yeah but they acted really well." well guess what the people on broadway and london do ... they sing impeccably beautifully AND give just as good acting. This movie SUCKED and was an insult to long time les miz fans everywhere lol
Never really thought about how this is one of my favorite movies. It is my favorite Broadway but rewatching this behind the scenes reminded me after all these years that this movie holds a special place in my heart
I wonder how many of the actors in this movie have ever seen the musical? I saw this first when it came out and finally went to see the musical this year and boy they did such an incredible job bringing this play to the silver screen! There were parts in the play that rushed through and I was happy to have that explained a little better in the movie so I could really understand the depth of what was going on. Just incredible.
When I was in 10th grade, our literature teacher made us watch this movie and had us make an essay. Min. Of 500 words but I passed a 10,000 word essay because I had too much to say. Finished it in five hours while listening to the entire soundtrack of the movie. Writing that piece was so exhilarating.
I wish they'd show this on T.V. again and keep it there forever! I love singing out loud to this, it makes me feel so good! Best musical ever! Bravo 👏👏👏
I just watched the film - again. It's still amazing production and will be very hard to surpass. Good luck to anyone who tries to! That said, this whole business about filming live singing never being attempted needs a big huge asterisk next to it. Half a century earlier, Rex Harrison recorded his singing in "My Fair Lady" live on the set. In 1992, an entire opera - "Tosca" - was not only filmed with the cast listening to an orchestra which was in another location, it was done live - and broadcast worldwide. You can always do another take if something goes wrong while you're filming, but going live is really performing without a safety net.

Samantha Barks played Éponine in the London production of Les Mis at Queens threatre for a year. She was one of the best trained for the role of any of the cast. You can watch videos of her singing in the live stage production.
@@McFlightDGCanada I know.
One of my top 3 movies of all time!
Apparently i dont need to hear the whole I dreamed a dream of anne hathaway to start crying.
I still listen to the movie soundtrack on repeat and I just get chills when I hear Anne’s version of I Dreamed A Dream
I've watched this film so many times because I absolutely love the music and hearing these amazing voices from the actors; Les Misérables is a film that one can never tire of.
Les Mis, is such an emotional musical, now film, it makes me so emotional, so that's three and a half hours of crying
Most incredible movie production of a musical, EVER.
This comment makes me want to watch Chicago again.
BS! it killed the original West End show stone dead!
I'd say chicago is! and of course the new in the heights film is flawless.
Just no
I want to shoot a musical film where a pianist plays on my ear and then the piano is replaced by a 70 piece orchestra. OMG This is so awesome!!!!
Amanda's talking voice is like ASMR
Samantha Barks 😍😍😍😍
Funny how they didn’t show Russell Crowe ‘singing’ live in this featurette 😂
LOL🤣🤣yes funny.........
That’s why I came here 😭
I think he did a great job for his capacities though.
@@auroragarofolo1731 What utter nonsense 😂
@@Melt_With_You yeah........ theres no comparison between the two😂😂
In terms of production, this is THE BEST movie musical I've ever seen. I LOVE how they produced this and allowed them to sing live. The cast was amazing and the whole movie is incredible. I was in tears by the end, it was so good!
No it's not it was a nightmare I have reasons
@@Matt_Hatt3r Just no they didn't even sing the correct notes. And just to say they could literally have lost their voices from that
Right so I watched this on the plane and I cry pretty effortlessly at emotional scenes in shows/movies.
She was right.
I love her honesty and self-awareness
Is it just me that cries everytime I hear Anne's version of I dreamed a dream. Mah heart. 😭😭😭😭
this musical is freaking legendary and it’s just as beautiful rewatching it.
There is no possible way this can be healthy for the singers' vocal chords to give it their all on every single take over and over again
It definitely just makes you appreciate this movie all over again!! The magical. Feel of all these brilliant singers ❤️
Nobody is talking about the fact that Samantha Barks absolutely smashed On My Own in torrential “rain” wearing a corset smaller than my little finger
I couldn't count how many I've watched this movie. This is the greatest movie I've ever watched.
no wonder this is one of the most enchanting musical cinematics. they did it live and give life into every piece of the lyrics ♥️ Extraordinary!
When my mom and I watched this years ago, the first thing we said was that Anne had to win an Oscar for her role as Fantine and we were so glad she did
Very good...Les Miz is one of my
All time musicals......saw it with the
Oreginal Broadway Cast in 1984.....
Gahh, I love Eddie!!!
Honestly, i feel like everyone hates on russel. Im not saying you are. But i honestly prefer russle to hugh
@@janaharing6600 I think Russell actually did a solid job. Was he Phillip Quast or Norm Lewis ? Noooo. But I do think his voices was far better suited to Javert than Hugh was to Valjean.
@@trinitysanabria1350 agreed
I really enjoyed Crowe, more than most of the others! Glad to find others who agree :)
I love this movie so much. It was a favorite musical when I was a kid. My mom would listen to the CD in the car.
I watched les miserables when I was 6/7. Hugest regret of my life, I couldn’t sleep for a week 😂 watched it again 8 years later and I love it!!
this movie would’ve been so much better if they hired a director that understood how musicals work
We dreamed a dream... And this director ruined it.
Edit: The producer ruined it.
Totally agree. And I’m totally in a minority but I feel a good majority of the cast was ...miscast. Beautiful singers (most of them) but not for a Les Mis production.
@@kayanarede Producer was the one who ruined it. He insisted on Crow, live singing and many more flaws.
@@xakseli2244 thank you!
@@trinitysanabria1350 agreed! Aaron Tveit's shoulders must be sore from carrying the film's whole weight
This movie was “ groundbreaking “ as they wanted! So memorable and beautiful. I loved the realness of the voices, to me it was perfect
My mum absolutely loves this musical. She says it’s the best musical
This was by and still is the BEST musical movie EVER made. Just like the musical on stage. There is no comparison. Cold Wilkinson original Jean plays the bishop. Wonderful other wonderful actors.
One of my favorite musical theatrical productions
it should have just stayed in the theatre, this movie was TRASH
im still not over how tom hooper created what is to me the best musical cinema experience alongside moulin rouge and then went on to make effin' CATS! absolute mad lad..
I wish more people would comment on the incredible “A Little Fall of Rain.” I just sit there and bawl like a fool. Every single time. Like when I’m all like “dude, feelings are stuck in my eyeballs and they need to escape” I just turn on that scene and WHAM, all feelings escape out my eyes in the form of salty crocodile tears. She loves him so much and dying in his arms makes her whole empty life worthwhile and it’s so horrible and beautiful and painful and LIFE. Seriously.
Goosebumps every time I listen to the soundtrack or watch the movie
Living for Helena & Sasha, they crack me up & brought just the right tone of comedy! Bravo 👏🏼
I get why I feel so touched by the movie now. they sing it in the exact moment they are acting so they sound so real, so natural. they are all amazing performers both in acting and singing. I really appreciate the casting
‘that song which i thought i knew pretty well, suddenly i listened to the lyrics for the first time afresh’
2:21 bless Samantha's heart. She's such an angel.
I really had no clue that Amanda Seyfried, and Anne Hathaway has such an angelic voice until Les Miserables
I really didn’t know Amanda could sing and she is amazing
Isn't she in the film of Mamma Mia?!
Never really thought about how this is one of my favorite movies. It is my favorite Broadway but rewatching this behind the scenes reminded me after all these years that this movie holds a special place in my heart
Who here gets obsessed with this once every 2 years?
8 years later I'm finally finding what Key of Awesome parodied
“This has never been tried before”
Every stage performer:
Am I a joke to you?
@geatga Les Mis 10th anniversary concert
@geatga Jesus Christ superstar 1973 (granted some parts were voice dubbed)
For film obviously
They’re OBVIOUSLY talking about in an actual movie. Ex: Mamma Mia, Phantom of the Opera (2004), The Greatest Showman, etc.
@@victormeyers1860 which was a film of a stage performance... that doesn’t count smh.
Just incredible.
something about this video is so powerful that it gets me emotional
Eddie’s speaking voice sounds oddly different in this video
It’s because all the sound in this copy of the video raises the pitch a half step higher
Well now I know why Lés Misrablés is my fave musical 🎼 the fact that they're singing live gives that chance to convey emotions in their songs
i’m already feeling feelings from this
Watching this makes me want to cry, the music and performance in this movie is immaculate.
Kocham "Les Miserables" ❤️❤️❤️ dla mnie to po prostu arcydzieło sztuki filmowej!!!
Totally amazing ❤️
I loved this method of recording live!!
Eddieeeee💜💜💜💜
This just makes this movie more powerful, god Hugh Hackman is just a soul we didn’t deserve🖤
i know! i love him and his singing!! this whole comment section complaining about his voice is making me so sad😭
I wish they'd show this on T.V. again and keep it there forever! I love singing out loud to this, it makes me feel so good! Best musical ever! Bravo 👏👏👏
Absolutely fantastic. Every single one of you!!
Even looking at this video I'm tearing up a bit
Me and my mom balled at the movie theatre.. waterfall of tears..
This is so good though, amazingly talented people. Fair play to them all. Well done. A pure joy.
